In the aftermath of classic rock in the '70s, many musicians began to gravitate towards R&B and pop. The Rhinestones were one of those bands. The band's core members Kal David, Marty Grebb, and Harvey Brooks released two really solid pop-flavored R&B albums. (There is also a third with a new line-up which included some future members of the group, Orleans.) Centered around Woodstock, NY these guys brought in top-notch musicians to fill out the roster and this record is a great example of their talents. Brooks was a first-class studio bassist who played with The Electric Flag, Miles Davis (Bitches Brew), and Al Kooper, to name a few. The great line-up includes Tito Puente, Toots Thielemans, David Sanborn and the Brecker Brothers. "Freewheelin,'" the single release, would have been a hit had it had the backing of a major label. There are other great tunes here, including a cover of Leon Russell's "Hurt Somebody," a blues song showcasing Kal's great playing and singing.
