This is the 50th anniversary edition of the very first bossa nova album, performed by the great Brazilian singer/actress, Elizete Cardoso. The cover of Canção Do Amor Demais and its contemporary promo shot are the antithesis of bossa nova: Elizete Cardoso -- smashed against shelves filled with books (to remind us that the original label, Festa, issued spoken word poetry LPs and was not a "popular music" label) -- and, with songs by Vinicius De Moraes and António Carlos Jobim, she looks like a prisoner of that sort of love that is only big if it's sad (to quote De Moraes himself). Of course, we now know that bossa nova was almost an anti-intellectual movement and its lyrics and themes were usually a manifest towards happiness in direct contrast with the tradition of the '50s and its angst-filled torch singers. But -- among many others -- these are precisely the sort of contradictions that emphasize the lack of cynicism of the moment in which Jobim and Vinicius invited a popular singer of the day to listen to some new songs, in Jobim's own Ipanema apartment, with João Gilberto sitting in to approve. Everything but a calculated move, this was, nevertheless, a moment that would last forever. In just a few years, the bossa nova would become a lifestyle.
