2009 release. Kimintan Cissoko is the genuine article. He's the young scion of the Cissoko clan, which has been famous for centuries in Guinea and neighboring West African countries. The Cissokos are griots -- hereditary Mande poets and musicians -- who are acclaimed especially as masters of the kora (a 21-string harp), and Kimintan is the latest in their long, distinguished lineage. But he's not your father's griot. He has a band called Ba Cissoko, which includes a drummer, a bass guitarist and a second kora player, the amazing Sekou Kouyaté, whose instrument is electrified, wired to effect pedals and cranked up. Electric guitarist Abdoulaye Kouyaté often joins the quartet in the studio and onstage. Recorded in Marseilles, France, Séno is Ba Cissoko's third album and goes even further than the first two in melding traditional Mande music with rock, reggae, salsa, funk and hip-hop. With Séno, Ba Cissoko's unique sound is no longer a novelty; it's smart, exciting music that makes immediate connections to listeners whoever and wherever they are.
