"Chicago-area beat-smith Maker saw his Now-Again Records debut -- Maker Vs. Now-Again, an entry in the same 'music-library' series as Oh No vs. Now-Again and MRR-ADM's unnamed 'black-album' -- used for placements in shows as varied as CSI and The Chicago Code, and in advertisements for Apple. But, most importantly, it showcased the verve with which this underground Chicago hip-hop producer undertook an exercise in boom-bap era aesthetics: he dug deep into the Now-Again catalog and found dusty drum breaks to underscore two bar loops. Maker vs. Now-Again made the case that hip hop didn't necessarily have to fun in its funky past. He's now returned with Maker vs. Now-Again Vol. 2 and has expanded beyond the American funk, soul and jazz that Now-Again was founded upon.
