"In less than one year, Riva Starr has become one of the most talked-about house artists, thanks to a string of blinding releases that started with the 'Thizzle'/'China Gum' 12" for Jesse Rose's Frontroom Recordings. He followed this up with the Bubble and La Conga EPs for Claude Vonstroke's Dirtybird label, the latter reaching the top ten in the Beatport tech house chart and top fifteen in the global chart. 'War Drums' opens the tribal theme of this 12"; a slower tempo affair that's (literally) all in the beats, with drums not only iterating the rhythm but also the meandering, unsettling melody -- Riva Starr makes drums sing! 'War Drums' is aimed squarely at its murkier but no less intoxicating underbelly. B1 'Maria (Dub)' isn't so much a track as a stampede, driven by thumping tribal percussion mingled with Latin-sounding vocal, piano and woodwind loops. Riva whips up disparate sonic elements up into explosion after explosion of ecstatic carnival color, releasing the tension with devastating bass drops and an assured sense of house dynamics. It's back overground for B2, 'La Gatta,' a track characterized by a bass line that positively attacks the listener and commands you to dance."
