"Thalia Zedek started her career as a musician in the group Dangerous Birds whose 1982 single 'Alpha Romeo' is a rare find these days, but it was really with her 1986 Homestead release with UZI that she began to make her mark not only on the Boston region but on the underground in general. It rightfully put Thalia in the company of other challenging female pioneers such as Kim Gordon. The record was re-issued by Matador in the mid-1990s to much acclaim. It was a only two years later that Thalia again broke new ground with her group Live Skull, whose three releases stand more than the test of time and laid the groundwork for artists such as PJ Harvey to follow. It was with the dense rock of her group Come, which featured guitar interplay between her and Chris Brokaw (Codeine), that Thalia rose with the swell of popularity of so-called indie rock. Throughout her career, Thalia's voice has been a singular calling card. Her songwriting has great depth and a pervading melancholic tone. Much like the work of Nick Cave, Thalia's vocals and song arrangements have a pervasive bittersweet tone. She has chosen unusual instrumentation such as viola to compliment her guitar work and like a great full-bodied burgundy, her songs are rich in texture and reveal with each listen their delicately crafted layers."
