Mali: The Fulani Hoddu
Lo-key, minimalist Mali-ian droning atmospherics here -- one of the most exciting Ocora releases in years. No east-meets-west fusion in sight. "This disc featured four exceptional Malian musicians playing the hoddu lute -- the foundation stone of the oral tradition of the Fulani people and the key to the communication of their knowledge. This ancient music has been endlessly recreated through the centuries, and transmitted from generation to generation. The players come from three successive generations of the Sarre griot family and include Nouhoum Hamadou Sarre, with whom the young Ali Farke Toure made his first album. The recordings were made between 2002-2004 in Mali."
