"Introducing Masami Akita's homage to free-jazz. Door Open at 8am is one of the most adventurous outings made by Merzbow. Recorded during the same era as Aqua Necromancer, this new recording also incorporates the use of sampled sounds. However, this time Akita is paying homage to his love of free jazz, free-jazz drummers to be precise. It includes tracks such as Tony Williams 'Deathspace', 'Lyons Wake', 'Metro and Bus' and an unbelievable cover of John Coltrane's 'The Africa Brass Session, Vol 2'. Aside from the absolutely scorching Coltrane cover, the listener is treated to a variety of sounds never before captured on record. Aside from Masami's trademark blasts of noise, meticulously crafted into gorgeous sound collages, he introduces a much greater importance on the use of subtleties and breaks of silence. There is also a strong electro-acoustic quality surrounding Door Open at 8am, this was also displayed on his recent Tzadik release, 1930."

"Originally slated for release as the flip side of a split CD/LP with Godspeed You Black Emperor entitled Aural Florida, this release just kept growing and growing. Now finally finished, the Shalabi Effect present their debut with a staggering 131 minutes psychedelic blow out. On this debut double CD somewhere in the vicinity of 40 instruments have made their way onto the recording. It is very difficult to describe Shalabi Effect, because the sound is varied and changing so frequently, but we can definitely trace influences of AMM, Organum, and Pink Floyd, and psychedelic music. 2011 repress. "We are very pleased to announce two new recordings by Keiji Haino, focusing on hurdy-gurdy and wave drum. Continuing in the vein of our previous release with Haino (the 66 minute drone So, Black is Myself ) this double CD remains very dark and very ambient for the most part. Each disc features one long piece using one of the two different instruments and each is individually titled. The main title as well as the individual track titles perhaps give the best insight into the mind of this enigmatic performer and the message he is trying to convey. Keiji Haino is easily one of the most exciting live performers of our time, exuding a passion and an intensity rarely matched. Disc 1 is a solo piece for hurdy-gurdy and is an absolute gem. It is among the most gentle and beautiful pieces of work we have been graced with by His Darkness. At times comparable with elements of the Affection recording that came out PSF in the early nineties and like disc two recalls the work of Nijiumu, another project of Haino. Disc 2 starts off really quiet with metallic resonation, slices of treated voice fragments and loops of feedback. It continues with rattling and bursts of vocal shrieks, with periods of absolute silence shattered by jarring belches of sound. Out in anyone's Keiji Haino collection. This is certainly one of Keiji Haino's most psychedelic sounding solo releases, at times reminiscent of early works by Amon Duul's Psychedelic Underground and Experimante recordings and at times it recalls some of the work by pioneering psychedelic ensembles from Japan such as Kawabata Mokoto's Acid Mothers Temple, East Bionic Symphonia and Taj Mahal Travellers."

"Shalabi Effect is made up of Sam Shalabi [Molasses, trio w/ David Kristian and St-Onge, Detention] on electronics, guitar, prepared guitar and oud, Anthony Seck on electronics, guitar and moog, Alexandre St-Onge [Et Sans, Undo] on electronics and upright bass and Will Eizlini on percussion. The sound on the Trial of Saint-Orange is incredibly rich in texture and boasts a very organic feel. This is psychedelic music done in a way that is incredibly rare these days; the band is more about creating lush texture than rocking out. A good comparison would be the more ethereal side of the Acid Mothers Temple, the La Novia recording in particular. There also seems to be influence drawn from the style of horror/drama soundtracks conducted by Ennio Morricone and much of the accompanying music to Argento's more memorable films. This is most notable in the recording's closing epic piece, which has a duration of over 20 minutes."

"The band takes cues from across the music spectrum, but unlike many of the rock bands to achieve success recently they shape their sound into something fresh and personal. Soft Canyon borrows heavily from the Laurel Canyon sound that spawned the likes of producer, arranger and musician Jack Nietzsche as well as absurdist popster Van Dyke Parks, not to mention the great influence it had on Arthur Lee's Love and former Canadian Neil Young. This is most evident on the anthem-style track 'Hope's Great Divide,' a track that is extremely catchy and chock-full of studio trickery that will have the listener thinking it must be one of those lost gems from the 70s. Soft Canyon layers the sound of two or three guitars and keyboards with incredible depth in the vocal department and a drum sound that recalls the studio wizardry of Phil Spector. The band also blends heavy influences of Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother era with early Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers, but without falling into the trap of ripping off or rehashing the same old sounds. In this respect they are comparable to Royal Trux or Acid Mothers Temple in the sense that they are paying homage to their influences but still changing the face of rock at the same time."

"Shalabi Effect refer their latest effort, Pink Abyss, as their 'pop record' -- an apt description in comparison to their two previous releases. While Pink Abyss retains elements of those efforts, there is decidedly more emphasis placed on melody on this release, with more use of vocals and more prominence given to the guitar. Without a doubt, it is Shalabi Effect's most rocking effort thus far, featuring impeccable musicianship and a brilliant and powerful recording quality that will blow away the band's loyal following. Some highlights on Pink Abyss include 'Bright Guilty World' (track 2), which features beautifully seductive vocal work of Elizabeth Anka Vajagic who will be releasing a long-awaited solo record on Constellation early next year. This piece moves along gently at a slow patter, with an unusual combination of cracked electronics, guitar and jazz-styled percussion giving it a very cinematic feel. The somber chanting on 'I Believe in Love' (track 5) lends a deep eeriness to the piece, also bearing a certain resemblance to the outsider folk that is booming in the United States of late. Another absolute gem is the über-poppy 'Blue Sunshine' (track 4), featuring a beautiful guest appearance from Charles Spearin of Broken Social Scene and Do Make Say Think on trumpet. This track recalls the over-the-top sensibility that seems to have informed many seventies TV show theme songs or the hits of Burt Bacharach. The closing piece, 'The Kinder Surprise,' has a very gentle, ambient feel and could blend in on a release from the Boards of Canada or Mogwai."

"The quintet seamlessly intermingle experimental based psychedelic pop with vintage minimal post industrial dance music with nods towards classic kraut rock of the '70s. Each of the four tracks on Par Noussss... is a trip around the world. First up is a very gentle piece blending whispered vocals and various spliced tape samples backed with simple electronic background. The second track has the group sounding quite a bit like NYC legends Suicide if they were lost in a sea of electronic Xenakis. It is not as though they are deliberately trying to sound like the famed no wavers, but they utilize similar primitive electronic sounds and screamed vocals. The third track sounds like it could be a long lost gem discovered on an obscure film soundtrack; it doesn't resemble anything else out there, or even the other tracks on the recording. The recording's closing number is an absolutely stunning track that would not have been out of place on Le Fly Pan Am's recent release, N'Écoutez Pas. Drummer Morel is in fine form here grounding the piece while St−Onge, Tellier−Craig and De Oliveira lace the track with spliced vocals and splintered electronics." "This release documents an especially memorable performance from 2002. Live in Montreal commences very quietly as a barely audible hiss, which proceeds to build in intensity until the sixteen minute mark, then falls back into silence for a few seconds before advancing into the next movement of the piece. At this point the performance takes on a scarier and more sinister shape. Sounds seem to move in all directions. It is absolutely mind blowing what Francisco Lopez is able to achieve using equalization and a quadraphonic speaker set up. There are percussive elements to this piece that are fresh and unusual that last for about five minutes from the 20- to 25-minute mark. They eventually fade out giving way to an increasingly powerful drone that is classic Lopez. The sounds during this portion of the recording are incredibly rich and dense. At times you think you can detect elements of a string quartet in the distance or tape stretching of a vocal choir. At the 32-minute mark the recording starts to fade out the same way it began and while it is a long piece, it certainly has the feel of a complete work."

2011 repress. "While this album is certainly a tribute record it doesn't consist of straight-up Sabbath worship in the simple sense of covers. The band sounds as if they are simultaneously paying respect to other Sabbath-influenced projects such as Melvins or Zeni Geva, the later being the former home of Tabata, one of the Temple's latest recruits. Starless and Bible Black Sabbath consists of two tracks, the first being an epic thirty four minute blowout titled 'Lady from Hell.' The opening cut begins in a similar fashion to Black Sabbath's eponymous open albeit much less dramatic. The second track relates more to the band's obsession with Kraut rock, sounding like the more pop-oriented period of Hawkwind."

"Tanakh's Ardent Fevers marks the band's fourth release for Alien8 Recordings and finds Jesse Poe and company continuing to delve deeper into the world of psychedelic pop music. While this most recent work bares some resemblance to the band's debut Villa Claustrophobia, and their sophomore Dieu Deuil, it treads more in the sounds of '70s rock, resulting in an album less precious, and closer to Tanakh's live sound. Listening to Ardent Fevers one is treated to a beautiful array of lush compositions that capture the listener with memorable choruses and well thought out orchestration. Stellar tracks include the opening 'Drink to Sher,' which recalls Beck from his Sea Change period or Tim Buckley. 'Greybreathes' is an unforgettable piece of music that has you humming the chorus for hours. Just like most of the music of Tanakh, the focal point of this cut is the wonderful vocal style of Jesse Poe. 'Still Trying to Find You Home' starts off as Leonard Cohenesque folk dirge but builds momentum until it takes on the feel of Neil Young's Crazy Horse and comes close to 'freakout' thanks to some pretty serious soloing on guitar. The band then switches to the far lighter 'Restless Hands,' which recalls sixties era British folk-pop."

May, 2006 release. "Untitled #180 is perhaps López's most playful and humorous release. While it features his trademark swells, bursts of pure sound and extended periods of silence, a unique element captured on this release is the predominant electroacoustic feel to the sound. This has a lot to do with the sound sources, short samples borrowed from blockbuster motion pictures. As a result many of the clichés of both the world of academic electroacoustic music and film sound effects are beautifully exploited on this recording. Listening to Untitled #180 with adequate volume is quite a mind-bending experience. With its juxtaposition of silence and extremely dense sound one is left with an impression similar to the works of composers such as Carl Stalling and Raymond Scott's works for cartoons or perhaps the music of Pierre Henry, but with the undeniably powerful touch of López. Untitled #180 is perhaps a reaction to how brutal the sound effects utilized in the film industry have become, with THX and surround sound and associated technologies the sound of car crashes, creatures, explosions or just sounds of every day life have become incredibly loud in the cinema setting. It is very easy to get a feel for this listening to segments of Untitled #180. There are moments on this recording that are absolutely over the top and the different sounds inspire so much mental imagery that is mind-boggling trying to follow the piece. In this respect, the near-silent passages are well earned."

He is also an accomplished poet and visual artist. Buckareff rounds out the band on bass guitar and backing vocals. While credit is owed to likes of such pioneering legends Earth, current king pins SUNN((O))) and Boris for defining the genre, Nadja take more inspiration from artists hailing from the dark ambient and electronica fields. A mix of dialogue, interviews, documentary material, and composed music, Overpass! presents the story of Antonia, a new arrival who finds herself mystified by the city. In seven vignettes Antonia orients herself through encounters with real and fictional locals. She investigates the city's peculiarities, including its preoccupation with nature, failed freeway projects, and attempts at urban planning. Weirdly drawn to the Keefer Street pedestrian overpass and its history, Antonia finds a way to understand Vancouver's particular response to modernization. The CD is the product of a three-year collaboration between Adam Frank, who teaches poetry at the University of British Columbia, and Sam Shalabi, a Montréal-based composer and musician. Sam Shalabi has been a longtime member of the Alien8 Recordings family, with two solo releases, Osama and On Hashish, his trio recording with David Kristian and Alexandre St-Onge as well as four recordings with his psychedelic improv ensemble Shalabi Effect. Overpass! is a melodrama in the late eighteenth-century sense: dialogue that is spoken (not sung) with musical accompaniment to set or introduce the moods and ideas. It takes as subject a minor, ugly cement structure called the Keefer Street pedestrian overpass."

"Mon Animal Est Possible is a collection of electronic love songs written and conceived by Alexandre St-Onge, whose purpose behind the recordings was to try to communicate with monsters and exorcise/exercise his own monstrosity through them, thus making possible his own animal. A collection of eight pieces of just under 40 minutes, Mon Animal Est Possible reveals St-Onge at his most melodious and sensuous thus far. The album is largely centered on vocals, both those of St-Onge and his partner Fanny. This is the polar opposite of his debut solo effort released by Alien8 back in 1999; St-Onge has traded in massive passages of near silence for lush ballads and love songs filled with vocals and cinematic backgrounds. It is rather difficult to draw contemporary comparisons to this recording, although one may be reminded of the recently reissued classic L'enfant Assassin des Mouches by Jean Claude Vannier. In terms of more recently released music similarities could be drawn to the experimental passages from vocalists like Scott Walker and Robert Wyatt."

"Torngat is a formidable trio hailing from the fertile and diverse musical community of Montreal. Up until now the band has enjoyed success in a few key cities, but with You Could Be things are about change. This is the band's third recording and a follow up to 2005's stellar La Rouge EP. Torngat is an instrumental trio made up of primarily drums, keyboards and French horn, although it is the multi-instrumentalism of all three players that really give Torngat that spark of something special. Julien Poissant is the band's drummer but also plays a variety of instruments on the album; in a live setting he can be found playing extra keys with the left hand, bass drum with the right foot, high hat with the left foot and trumpet with the right hand. Wurlitzer and analog synth are Mathieu Charboneau's primary tools, but he is also known to juggle duties with xylophones, percussion, trumpet, melodicas additional keyboards and live electronic effects. French horn player Pietro Amato seasoned his chops performing with Belle Orchestre and has toured and recorded with Arcade Fire. Amato also contributes a host of other acoustic and electronic instrumentation as well as some vocals to the album. Torngat perform music that could be construed as post rock; like much of the genre they exude a strong cinematic quality. Like their sister band Belle Orchestre, the music of Torngat is less dark and melancholic than post rock. Instead of doom and gloom the band delivers uplifting melodies and fantasy inspired passages, yet still manage to infuse their songs a certain emotional weight unnoticed in the bubblier tunes of the former project."

"Sam Shalabi's third solo outing for Alien8, Eid, was written and conceived in Cairo, Egypt in 2006 while Shalabi was living there and further realized in Montreal and Vancouver during the first half of 2007. The album is a result of two separate ideas that slowly coalesced over a couple of years. The first was Shalabi's idea of composing songs for singers he knew and enjoyed. The second idea was that of creating a 'modern Arabic pop' record. It was during the time that Shalabi was living in Cairo that he came to the realization that Arabic pop music was much more wild, wide and weird than he had imagined and this also had a huge influence on this recording. Over time Shalabi became less interested in trying to make pop songs and more interested in allowing the material to take its own shape. Upon listening to Eid, it becomes clear how Shalabi was influenced by the wide breadth of Arabic pop music: each piece is stylistically its own and allowed to take its own shape. The recording opens with a beautifully played piece of Shalabi's solo oud playing that gives one the impression they are in store for a gentle acoustic journey. Gears shift drastically with the follow-up track 'Jessica Simpson,' which can also be considered one of the recording's most interesting and unusual selections. Guest vocalist Radwon Moumneh does an excellent job delivering his vocals over repetitious percussion; then a totally unexpected Guitar Hero-style solo slips in out of nowhere. Sam Shalabi enlists the help of far too many guests to list here, although among the standout contributions is that of singer/songwriter Lhasa de Sela who has a thriving solo career and has collaborated with the likes of the Tindersticks and Nick Cave. Constellation Records recording artist Elizabeth Anka Vajajick sings on 'Billy The Kid' and Katie Moore is absolutely stunning on 'Billy The Kid Pt. II.' This will mark our ninth release with Shalabi, not including his efforts in various projects as a guest or studio musician."

On Cult of Ruins one is subjected to a blend of super-intense sound layered with horrific howls and relentless blast beats, only to then be confronted with a melodic and haunting ambient approach that still retains immense power. In this respect, Menace Ruine bare some resemblance to the mysterious French post-black metal horde, Deathspell Omega who have become famous for juxtaposing ambient music with absolutely crushing metal. Standout cuts on the Cult of Ruins include 'Dove Instinct,' which opens up with a beautifully haunting intro constructed with the use of controlled feedback that would not appear out of place on a recording from fellow Canadians, Nadja. Eventually the noise subsides and gives way to a wave of ambient brutality that is both ear-rattling and pretty at the same time. The album's second song, 'Sky as a Reversed Abyss,' opens on the ambient tip and moves at a much slower pace than much of the recording, serving mainly to build on the band's mystical feel before dissolving into the breakneck pace of 'Kill the Egregore.' 'Bonded By Wyrd' is an absolute standout track that is spearheaded by an incredibly catchy riff, backed with droning melodic vocals. An occult vibe runs through most of the album, but it is particularly felt on this cut. This song is the band's current live hit and for good reason, as it seems to empower the listener."

"Montreal's Duchess Says fuses the fury and intensity of a punk rock comprised of screaming guitars, moaning bass and relentless drumming with keyboards and the explosively sexy stylings of vocalist Annie-C. While the band may not be reinventing the wheel with their blend of electronics and post punk, there is something breathtakingly original about Duchess Says and one listen to Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs will cement that impression. Duchess Says formed when longtime collaborators Annie-C Deschênes and Ishmael Tremblay relocated to Montreal from Québec City. Shortly after they enlisted the help of multi-instrumentalist Philippe Clément and then in an attempt to bring more of a live, immediate sound to the trio, they added drummer Simon Besre. Early on they released a four song EP and they spent the last few years working in the studio and further perfecting their mind blowing live performances. It has been a long time coming, but we are pleased to finally offer their debut full- length recording, Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs. Despite the lack of a full-length release Duchess Says has become one of the poster bands of Montreal, having performed at most of the major festivals in their native Quebec as well as representing Montreal at the prestigious SXSW fest Montreal showcase (to which they return this year). During this time they also performed alongside the likes of Depeche Mode, Sonic Youth, Juan Mclean, Dinosaur Jr. and Les Georges Leningrad among many others. The album treats listeners to a mixture of punked-out electronic music that recalls the likes of Six Finger Satellite, whom they pay respects to with their blazing cover of 'Rabies,' as well contemporaries Glass Candy and the Chromatics. Featured on this LP is the band's live anthem, 'Black Flag,' which has one of the most memorable choruses to come out of the genre and is sure to have even the stiffest of fans shaking like bacon. The record opens with 'Teneu Non Neu' which, giving a great indication of the fever pitch intensity of the band, finds Annie-C producing one explosive auricular orgasm after another with the band in hot pursuit matching her intensity. Other cuts such as 'A Century Old' and 'I've Got the Flu' have been crowd favorites for some time are now captured on record."

"Continuing his 'exploration of the universe of broad-band noise from the real world,' Francisco López delivers his latest tour de force, the original soundtrack to the film TechnoCalyps by Frank Theys. TechnoCalyps is a documentary in three parts on 'Transhumanism,' which deals with the subject of human beings no longer being the driving force of civilization. Director Frank Theys raises the question of whether we are prepared to accept the prospect that humanity is not the end of evolution. Francisco López' soundtrack compliments the film wonderfully. Anybody familiar with the sound art of the composer will understand why this is a sensible pairing. Francisco's ability to utilize everyday sounds that most people barely even notice, and transform them into sound art is quite astonishing. The original soundtrack opens with an intro that is based on repetitious industrial sounds that bring to mind heavy machinery heard from a distance. It is much more difficult to discern Lopez's source material on this release than on many of his previous works. While the recording features his trademark ebb and flow of quiet passages leading through crescendo to louder climaxes, the industrial nature of TechnoCalyps, makes it more difficult to absorb than many of his recordings centered on environmental recordings. "Back in May 2006 we baptized the emergence of the Montreal's energetic party machine Think About Life with the release of their self-titled debut. Here they are three years later with their sophomore effort, Family. This time around the trio is as off-the-hook as ever, but since they dropped their debut they have polished their sound, without losing their edge. Three years is a long wait but multi- instrumentalist Graham Van Pelt has been busy with his other band, Polaris prize nominees Miracle Fortress. Family is broken-toy disco rock, served funky, like a big friendly bowl of sugary breakfast cereal. Upon a base of hearty synths and sweaty drums these tunes bubble with '80s pop guitar licks and are bedazzled with meta-marshmallows of electronic drones and glitchy samples. This alt-dance exterior is a framework from which hang beautifully rhythmic vocals, either musing empathetically about high- school lovers and guilt-ridden bus rides or issuing vaguely strange missives about mysterious wizards and black champagne. The tone is sometimes sly, sometimes frantic but never menacing, ironic or fey. Sounds like LCD Sound system, Outkast, Blur, TV on the Radio, Cars and Quincy Jones-era Michael Jackson done in the ramshackle, outsider style of Public Enemy's producers the Bomb Squad. Family is probably as influenced by cartoon theme songs and 8-bit video game music as the L.A. riots. Beyond its charming pop heart and playful nouveau-disco trimmings, Family can also serve as a floatation device in case of bad-vibes. Step into their rad imagination, they got the magic touch."

"Describing this debut collaboration between Zbigniew Karkowski and Daniel Menche as heavy would be a serious understatement; gruelingly brutal would be much more fitting. Unleash is part one of a pair of releases based around the same recording sessions. Daniel Menche independently mixed the recorded work the duo recorded together in Portland, Oregon. While this marks the third outing for Menche, the master of physical noise from Portland, Oregon on Alien8 Recordings, we feel very fortunate to finally have an offering from the Polish-born composer Zbigniew Karkowski, who has been residing in Tokyo, Japan since 1994. Years back, we announced we would be releasing one of Karkowski's works which never materialized, yet here we are -- a magnificent collaboration effort. Daniel Menche has long been regarded as one of the heaviest hitters in the North American noise movement. He has been riding a wave of well-received records and seems to be on the top of his game. Zbigniew Karkowski is an ex-member of The Hafler Trio and is also known as a student of legendary composers Iannis Xenakis, Pierre Boulez and others. When asked about the outcome of his recent collaboration with Zbigniew Karkowski, Daniel Menche remarked that it was over the top with an old school feel and went on to make comparisons to a sound akin to an instrumental Whitehouse. It's a little more forgiving in the trauma department than the output of the aforementioned electronic pioneers, but nonetheless, it's absolutely teeth-rattling at times. It's not so much that any particular cut is the most brutal blast of noise, but more a matter of how the recording works as whole. 'The id marks that define individual tracks have only been worked into the piece to provide the listener some mercy,' said Daniel Menche."

"AUN is the ambient doom project of Montreal's Martin Dumais, who describes his take on outsider metal meets shoegaze as 'blight metal'. He has been a crucial contributor to the Montreal music scene for years and has recently reinvented himself with some of his deepest and most contemplative work to date under the AUN moniker. Elements of AUN's sound can be traced to the classic period of ambient music marked by the likes of Cluster & Eno as well as to contemporary players such as Tim Hecker. On Motorsleep the intensity of the drone gently climaxes to the point where ambience gives way to power and grandeur. It is here that the influence of early industrial music is revealed and trace elements of bands such as Swans lie just beneath the surface. Motorsleep is the result of the better part of a year's work spent shaping and solidifying the body of compositions that make up the recording. There is a strong sense of structure, continuity and flow that breathes throughout the long player. The release is broken down into seven movements all of them blending into one another almost seamlessly. The intensity slowly picks up over the course of the first few movements and reaches full power during the third and fourth pieces. Here the sound is rather dense and saturated with grainy ambient noise that slowly subsides and eventually gives way to a series of closing movements that recall the likes of Fennesz or a more menacing William Basinski. In a live situation AUN crafts his sound through guitar and a bevy of effects, offering a far more engaging visual experience than your average laptop-based performance. AUN's live show has been steadily improving alongside his recorded efforts and Motorsleep is without a doubt his most mature work to date. Motorsleep was skillfully mastered by former Khanate member James Plotkin, who has created plenty of like-minded music of his own over the years. To date AUN has released three solo records as well as a collaborative effort with Allseits on Montreal-based label Oral and released another outing as AUN entitled Multigone for the American label, Crucial Blast."

"Fantasma Parastasie sees the pairing of Aidan Baker, of the ambient doom band Nadja, and Tim Hecker, two of Canada's brightest musicians in the world of abstract electronic music. Tim Hecker has been enjoying the rewards of a stellar career and discography, devoid of filler, due to his incredibly high quality control. His full-length Harmony In Ultra Violet was viewed as a major release in the genre of experimental electronic music. Aidan Baker, on the other hand, works under very different circumstances, releasing material both as a solo artist and as a member of the duo Nadja. His prolificacy is on par with that of Merzbow and the late Muslimgauze. Thankfully, Aidan Baker is one of those musicians with the ability to record and write new music quickly and without sacrificing the quality of his art. Anyone familiar with both Aidan Baker and Tim Hecker is more than likely familiar with Alien8 Recordings as the two musicians have collectively released seven records for our label thus far. While Baker has collaborated with the likes of John Duncan, Black Boned Angel and Fear Falls Burning, among others, this marks the first collaboration to be released by Hecker. This release, divided in eight movements, blends together to form a fluid example of a collaboration that works. Unlike one of those collaborations where artists throw some sound files back and forth via the internet, this release is the fruit of various real-time recording and mixing sessions the two artists worked on in Tim Hecker's Montreal studio. The pieces on the record blend seamlessly into one another, creating a deeper listening experience, as is the case on a number of Tim Hecker's solo outings. While Baker and Hecker share a penchant for creating a powerful blend of ambient noise, Fantasma Parastasie finds the more dissonant elements tempered by an emphasis on ambience and even occasional melody. "In 2007, we announced the birth of this fantastic new band from Montreal. Menace Ruine came out of nowhere with a debut release that fused black metal and noise to astonishing results. Only eight months later, here they are with the follow-up to their debut Cult of Ruins and a drastic change in sound. The Die Is Cast sees the duo eschewing the howling vocals and blast beats and replacing them with majestic songs based around the vocal style of Genviève and the anthemic medieval music that bares much more resemblance to neo-folk than black metal. The band's sound is far more approachable this time around, yet remains challenging at the same time. Somber tunes propelled by slow-paced martial percussion, ambient electronics and droning feedback are carried by an incredibly powerful vocal performance by Geneviève. Menace Ruine set out to make a concept record based around medieval music, without sacrificing their intensity and they have managed to do so gloriously. With the current wave in the popularity of black metal, it seems some of the more fringe genres such as neo-folk are also gaining more notoriety. "Montréal Quebec's ambient power trio Torngat create majestic instrumental music that is at times as breathtaking as the glorious Quebec mountain range from whom they take their name. Torngat return with La Petite Nicole, the follow up to the critically acclaimed 2007 effort, You Could Be. This time around the band is sporting a grittier, propulsive sounding record that more closely resembles the band's live sound. La Petite Nicole offers forays into dub-heavy elements of post rock as well hints of Krautrock and the occasional miniature freak-outs. Aside from these flirtations in new directions, the same sound that has made them popular in Canada and festival stages remains. One gets the feeling that the band is creating music for yet-to-be-made films; while cinematic references may be considered standard when describing instrumental music, Torngat's creations are particularly evocative of the medium. Torngat put on a very energetic and inspiring performance and sound a lot bigger than a trio. The heavy use of organs recalls elements of Tom Waits and even hints at the pre-jazz era of Soft Machine. Up until now much of the hype about this young band has been linked to their affiliation to chamber-pop sensations Belle Orchestre and the Luya's, amongst countless other guest appearances with various Montreal projects."

"Acid Mothers Temple returns with a new release, their fourth for the label. The album is made up entirely of new studio recordings that have captured the band in fantastic form. The band is captured flying at full speed dishing out three slabs of Turkish psych meets Krautrock, served up Acid Mothers Temple style. The opening cut, 'Eleking The Clay' is a smoker that bears some resemblance to their well known 'hit,' 'La Novia.' The speed guru, a.k.a. Kawabata Makoto, is on fire and mesmerizes us with his speed and furry on this track. His guitar playing is so quick it becomes difficult to differentiate the actual notes being played as you are overtaken by the speed and repetitious nature of the track. In this respect it also brings to mind their fantastic rendition of the Terry Riley's minimalist anthem 'In C.' The same notes repeating over and over until they start to coalesce and take new shape. Next up is a short piece written by bass player and multi-instrumentalist Atsushi Tsuyama who is credited with playing monster bass, voice, acoustic guitar, alto recorder, flute, toy trumpet and kazoo. If you have ever witnessed the band live, you are aware of what a huge presence bassist Atsushi Tsuyama is within a live context and it is equally the case on Lord Of The Underground. This track, entitled 'Sorcerer's Stone Of The Magi,' serves as an intermission if you will; it is a nice gentle piece of outsider folk that allows you brace yourself for the epic closing track 'Vishnu And The Magic Elixir.' The final cut takes it's time to deliver its message and sees the band in familiar territory. Here they play with some of their more playful influences, such as Frank Zappa and Incredible String Band, and blend them with their patented spaced out electronics that have graced many of their records."

Like American band The Liars, Black Feelings' penchant for combining a variety of influences to conjure up a sound that is both retro and vitally fresh at the same time. The band's main vocalist and drummer Owain Lawson is kept busy as he sings and holds down the rhythm section alongside fellow founding member and bassist Brian Mitchell, while the sound is rounded out with shimmering guitar and synth flourishes provided by Kyle Fostner. Listening to Black Feelings' self-titled debut is never dull, as moody vibes ebb and flow throughout the long player carried by propulsive bass and drums. For a small band these guys have a huge sound. The drums have an almost war song intensity that helps drive the music alongside the bass, guitars, and synth all the while delivering really catchy anthemic songs. The feeling one experiences listening to this self-titled debut is very positive, yet with a lingering feeling of darkness hiding in the shadows. For this full length, they have enlisted the help of engineer Mark Lawson, whose credits include Arcade Fire, Beirut, Final Fantasy, Akron Family and The Unicorns to name a few. Although we consider Liminoid/Lifeforms to be a solo effort, there are in fact no less than eight guest musicians helping out on the recording. These include Canadian noise legend Knurl (a.k.a. Alan Bloor) who has been released three times on Alien8 Recordings prior to this recording, as well as members of Arc, Picastro, Forest City Lovers and Whisper Room. 'Liminoid' is a composition for large ensemble exploring sonic immersion in drones and textures, rhythms and pulsations. Incorporating composed and improvised segments, the piece uses elongation of sound and layered polyph- ony in an attempt to create a liminal and/or numinous state. This recording of 'Liminoid' is from its premier at The Music Gallery's X-Avant Festival in Toronto, October 25, 2008. The piece features a powerful vocal performance with every member sharing the vocal duties. The lyrics have been adapted from 5th-8th century Coptic Christian texts and inspired by the book Ancient Christian Magic by Marvin W. Meyer & Richard Smith. The ensemble members for this performance were: Aidan Baker (guitar/ voice), Clara Engel (guitar/voice), Nick Storring (cello/voice), Jakob Thiesen (drums/voice), Richard Baker (drums/voice), Tillman Lewis (cello/voice), Laura Bates (violin/voice) and Jonathan Demers (guitar/voice). 'Lifeforms' is a composition for strings, prepared/effected guitar, and amplified metal works. Likewise incorporating written and improvised material, the piece was originally commissioned and performed by The Penderecki Quartet in 2003. This recording was made in August 2008 at Commonwealth Studios in Toronto. The performers were: Aidan Baker (guitar), Nick Storring (cello), Mika Posen (violin) and Alan Bloor (metal works). This recording has been both skillfully mixed from multiple recordings and mastered by James Plotkin."

"Founded as a duo by T. Graves and Reyna Kay in September 2008, Blessure Grave blurs the lines between the goth, post punk and neo folk genres. The pair has since developed the project into a full band while building a cult-like following, scattering various vinyl and tape releases on boutique labels around the globe. Citing Killing Joke, Death in June, March Violets and The Cure as influences, Blessure Grave injects a pop sensibility into songs otherwise doomed to dreariness, creating an interesting mix of old and new but dark all around. The music initially appears rather simple, but quickly reveals the fact that the songs are fully fleshed-out and genuinely memorable. Perhaps what is misleading at first is that the recordings sound as though they were created in some kult black metal band's dungeon for maximum fog-at-dusk fidelity. Judged By Twelve, Carried By Six is the debut full-length release by Blessure Grave. The CD version will includes 4 tracks lifted from their debut 12" EP Learn to Love the Rope, originally released on Captured Tracks. The album provides the perfect soundtrack for contemplating today's troubled times or for simply being swept away with the nostalgic 80s vibe that permeates much of the recording. The band does not waste a lot a time allowing tracks to drone on: the songs are short and to the point, with the average track approximately three minutes in length. A number of the tracks on the album could be considered singles. Take for example the beautifully haunting duet 'Resting Place For Two,' where band leaders Grave and Kay share vocal duties. Equally enjoyable are pieces like 'Hope For The Worst,' 'In My Mind,' 'The Cycle' and 'In The First Place.'"

This method has become standard on the recordings by Hecker that followed Haunt Me and is an excellent method to deeply immerse the listener in the work. At the time of Haunt Me's release, Pitchfork championed Tim Hecker as one of North America's best kept secrets, scoring the album an impressive 8.6 on 10, and they have continued to support the artist's endeavors ever since. On Haunt Me, Hecker is often riding a fine line between ambient and noise. During one interlude, he is utilizing a cascading wave of distortion and throbbing bass, just as it starts to become the slightest bit oppressive. Gears are quickly shifted and the high-end harmonies and feedback are quickly giving way to more lush passages in the vein of early Stars of the Lid. The record's first movement runs for about 30 minutes and introduces the album's central motif, a mesmerizing and repetitive guitar riff. The track eventually dissolves into a particular jazzy section that has the band frantically freaking out somewhere between ragtime and Sun Ra. This jazz-inspired section ends rather abruptly after just under six minutes, yet it's enough to radically alter the previous vibe and prepare oneself for the third movement. The third segment marks the return of main riff being played in a very gentle manner with slight processing on Kawabata Makoto's guitar and additional synth action from Higashi Hiroshi being panned in and out of the mix. In a Fung Day T! treats the listener to short blitzes of energy, nearly reaching the climax of noise rockers Lightning Bolt, interspersed with what will become new fan favorites. One of the more outstanding jams, 'S.O.H?', is a nice and loose danceable number that recalls the early '80s new wave sound. The record closes with the longest track of the album, a slumbering dark sexy number that recalls the blood red curtain vibes of a David Lynch soundtrack. Duchess Says' penchant for blending aggressive music with dance music works well and makes them comparable to other famous Canadian exports such as Death From Above, Fucked Up and even Crystal Castles at times. This is magnified by the undeniable intensity and sheer originality of high priestess/vocalist Annie Claude. Anyone who has witnessed the band live knows the pure theatrical mayhem that ensues, with onstage antics approaching those of Jesus Lizard's David Yow."

"A celebrated Canadian playwright, expatriate of Michigan's 1960s art underground, wrote upon hearing Molasses for the first time, '...art from the heart...freight trains derailing in the back of somebody's head while bones rain down from the overpass and cats tied to tin cans tumble over the grating.' That description, with allusions to movement, confusion and din, is an apt introduction to the music that comprises the second Molasses release, Trilogie: Toil & Peaceful Life on Fancy. Following Molasses' acclaimed debut, You'll Never Be Well No More, these recordings are lush proof of the band's unique vision, bruises and all. More bleak, beautiful music: the strange signature marriage of folk-noir with order and disorder, improv and noise; mystery and minimalism with enormous orchestral violence; acoustic and electric instruments creating movements that tie the organic to the experimental; vocal drone and broken poetry which answer Chopin's adage that 'nothing is more odious than music without hidden meaning.' Trilogie: Toil & Peaceful Life takes the first half of its name from the French word for 'trilogy' as a tribute to Montréal, the city in which it was made. The second half is an expression coined by fiercely religious Russian peasants known as Old Believers ? or Doukhobors ? who were ancestors of Molasses songwriter, Scott Chernoff, and whose belief in salvation through suffering shrouds each of Trilogie's songs. With the addition of a new violin player, Molasses' six original members present three epic-length pieces, with found sounds capturing the spirit and setting the music was conceived in: 'Saint Catherine' begins by conjuring the rats of a Montréal morning and ends with a recording of trains in the Mont-Royal subway station that bears the city's name; 'Lisa's Waltz' (featuring experimental composers Alexandre St-Onge and Martin Arnold on electronics and hurdy-gurdy respectively) chronicles Scott's emigration from California to Québec and ends with a vintage recording of his great-aunt singing a Russian hymn; and a stunning 14 minute adaptation of 'Amazing Grace' ? penned by reformed slaver Captain John Newton ? continues the theme of the record as a denouncement of history and sin. An untreated recording of the steeple bells at Montréal's Notre-Dame cathedral acts as a haunting and hypnotic introduction to the trilogy."
