Artist: GEIOM
Title: Island Noise
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $22.00
Catalog #: BRK 001CD
"Following an acclaimed series of five 12" vinyl releases, the Berkane Sol label brings its long-awaited first CD album by Nottingham-based producer, Geiom. As Geiom navigates his dragon boat into uncharted territory accompanied by a crew of trusted retro hardware, Island Noise forges dubstep's desert island material of the future. A tropical melancholy runs right through the album from the nostalgic flutes and colorful keyboard lines to the cheeky dub swing and rustic electric pianos to the cover art. Geiom draws a whole world of music into his menagerie of sound. The title track sets the tone with a warm reggae style melody alongside futuristic arpeggios and an aquatic sub-bass. 'Farski' delves into the little-known world of '70s Persian funk ballads while 'Canopy Desire' evokes a filmic narrative revolving around digitized Angolan percussion. Pheli Nazir, a magical collaboration with singer Khalid who featured on Zalim Maar Daala, closes the album with a classic lovesick Indian vocal. Island Noise combines dancefloor dynamics with real attention to song structure and an intricate and playful use of dub style delays that make it well-suited to home listening but still heavy on a sound system. Exploring the many possibilities of the 140 tempo, tracks such as 'Inbuilt Chaos' and 'Getaline' feel something like languid, laid back dub, while tracks like 'Six Times Seven' and 'Cardoza' pick up the pace with some crisp 2 step riddims. The album has been getting props from bass visionaries such as Hyperdub chief Kode 9 and Benny Ill of Horsepower Productions. It has also been getting radio support from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1), Bobby and Nihal (Radio 1), Skream (Rinse FM), DJ Rupture (WFMU) and Boomnoise and Sgt. Pokes (subfm.com)."

Title: Overnight Biscuits
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BRKDUB 001EP
"After crafting many diverse works over the past 6 years for labels such as Skam, City Centre Offices and Neo Ouija, electronic producer Kamal Joory starts up his own label Berkane Sol to showcase his latest creations. 'Overnight Biscuits' is one of several Geiom tracks picked up on by Hyperdub chief Kode 9 over the past year for his 'fwd' Rinse FM show and DJ sets, leading up to the inclusion of the track on his recent highly acclaimed Dubstep Allstars 3 CD, on the mighty Tempa label. Pitched 808 kicks drive the rhythm under insistent hi-hats and crunchy snares while beautiful orchestral style synths and dubbed out piano stabs combine to create a highly filmic atmosphere. 'Shocks on the Rocks' evolves around the type of filtered chords that will appeal to anyone who respects the work of techno dub pioneers Basic Channel/Rhythm and Sound. Gently growling reggae inflected sub bass lines build under snappy drum patterns which get treated to all kinds of next level digital fx. The result is a futuristic soundscape which mixes perfectly with recent dubstep output such as L-Wiz, yet remains an immersive audio experience in its own right."

Title: Berkane Sol
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BRKDUB 002EP
"Following on from the worldwide success of 'Overnight Biscuits/Shocks on the Rocks' comes this all new 2 track 12" from producer Geiom on his own Berkane Sol label. 'Berkane Sol' is a moody piece which takes its time to build up and develop full bass weight. It features some perfectly modulated synth lines and the kind of spooky bass tones more often found in black and white era sci-fi and horror flicks. The drum section is a chunky half steppa helped out by some deep analogue kicks and exotic shaker action all the way from Ethiopia. Gently distorted and filtered reggae chord parts and sweeping test tones complete the picture and make this into a solid forward thinking but accessible dubstep workout. 'How to Love' was the first ever Geiom track to be picked up by Kode 9 -- he has been playing it on dubplate for months now. It features epic Egyptian orchestral sounds layered with hi-tech acidic pads and an immense sub bass line. Driving all this is a tight electro style riddim that sticks to the dub tradition of keeping the drums regular but totally mashing the sounds with some tasty FX. A highly memorable and sophisticated string section takes up the main hook half way through and gives the whole tune the feel of a future classic."

Title: Feels So Bad/De Nim é Le Fant
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BRKDUB 003EP
"The Berkane Sol label returns with its third release -- again by Nottingham-based producer, Geiom. The A-side, 'Feel So Bad,' is a slight departure from the previous 12"s -- it's a full vocal reggae/dubstep track featuring the microphone talents of Terrible Shock. He honed his skills in the ultra competitive ragga studios of his native Jamaica and has been working with Geiom on different projects for some time now. The track rides on a smooth deep b-line and some lush, drifting keyboard parts, driven along by a distinctive cowbell pattern and some massive dub snares. It has been described as sounding 'like (Berlin dubmeisters) Rhythm and Sound in a washing machine.' Lyric-wise it's a heartfelt but very quirky tale by Shocks about getting kicked out by his girl. 'De Nim é Le Fant' on the flip is a more electro-style instrumental dubstep tune -- 808 kicks and snares get pitched all over the place to create a real bass assault when played out on a rig. Analogue keyboards form themselves into almost disco-style stabs reminiscent of Detroit techno legends Red Planet, all adding together to create a tune that is somehow ethereal and intense at the same time. This 12" has already got DJ support from the likes of Kode 9, DJ Pinch and Horsepower Productions' Benny Ill."

Title: Unnecessary Stress
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BRKDUB 004EP
"The Berkane Sol label returns with another quality 2 tracker created by Nottingham-based producer Geiom. 'Unnecessary Stress' on the A-side introduces new vocalist Marita -- her sultry style floats in and out of the mix creating a hypnotic dream-like atmosphere that brings to mind the more spaced-out moments of Tricky's back catalog. But this is not trip-hop -- the drums and bass that power the tune are coming straight from the future. The bass line stays constant throughout but goes through subtle changes that somehow make it fascinating to follow for the full 6 minutes. Spooky bell sounds in the background and some seriously dubbed-out mixing techniques pay respect to the legacy of the classic Jamaican studio masters and give the listener a truly immersive experience. This is 100% late night material -- a pleasurable foggy haze seems to surround the track. 'Auxology' on the flip takes things into a much brighter world of sound. The melodies on this tune evoke a mixture of retro computer game soundtracks, grime riffs and pure ambience."

Artist: GEIOM FEAT: KHALID
Title: Zalim Maar Daala
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BRKDUB 005EP
"Berkane Sol label returns with a unique 12" created by Nottingham-based producer Geiom. An on-going collaboration between Geiom and Pakistani vocalist Khalid has now produced a bunch of classic hybrid songs, of which this is the first on release. A shared love of classic era Indian film soundtracks from the '60s and '70s has led to this project -- anyone who enjoys the music of legends like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle or Mohammed Rahfi will understand this record straight away. Epic vocals float over the top of dubstep-style drum patterns spiced with some hot tabla licks. Live harmonium parts and flute lines meet with sitar fx and some heavyweight bass action to create a truly psychedelic and distinctive track that defies genre. The intro on the flip gives the listener more space to absorb the musical sections and the a cappella is a quirky DJ tool -- sounds big mixed over grime instrumentals in particular. There have been several Asian-influenced dubstep tunes made over the past year, but this is the real thing -- no samples were harmed during the making of this record!"

Artist: GEOIM/EARLYBIRD/SPAMCHOP
Title: Net Weight
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: BRKDUB 009EP
"The Berkane Sol family continues to grow with release number nine, a mesmerizing 12" that sees Geiom collaborating with 2 of Nottinghams' most promising producers, Spamchop and Earlybird. 'Geile Zwazo' is a twitchy, unsettling exploration of the dubstep sound, with a churning bass line and demented percussive rhythms, driven through club floors to the hypnotic beat of a broken 4/4 riddim. On the flip, 'Net Weight' surges, from sparse beginnings, into an epic, garage-addled monster. Skipping, infectious drums propel shuddering bass and distant melodies through a proper song structure that stems from a haunting, synthesized chorus line. Despite Geiom's irrepressible musical presence, both collaborators find a clear voice on this 12". Spamchops' techno sensibilities resonate throughout 'Geile Zwazo''s rumbling bottom end, and Earlybird's own unique dancefloor style charges headlong into Geiom's twinkling analog soundscapes, taking the Berkane Sol library to new heights."

Artist: GEIOM & APPLEBLIM
Title: Shreds
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: BRKDUB 010EP
"Clear vinyl pressing in clear PVC sleeve. A pair of tasty collabos, rich with Appleblim & Geiom's ideas and oozing their respective styles. 'Shreds' opens with metallic timestretched pads and tappy hats, dropping into a revivalist piano stab that locks in over a tough 808 break and dubby bassline. A nice build leads into the killer second drop, solid sub layers beneath an uplifting chord progression as the synth lines open out. 'Flame Tree' treads the post-garage path, faintly acidic synth patterns wound over hand-carved beats."

Artist: GEIOM
Title: No More Tears/Eyl Booty
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BRKDUB 011EP
"Dislocated vocal fragments reshaped into a tight riddim that pays its respects to the classic swing and 2 step of producers like Todd Edwards and MJ Cole, but sounds totally fresh. Epic strings, builds and breakdowns held together by a heavy melodic bassline combine to create a sensual atmosphere far from the gloomy macho outlook of current 140bpm raving. 'Eyl Booty:' Heading up the Indian Ocean away from Mauritius towards the Suez canal, Geiom finds himself and his dragon boat in the coastal waters of Somalia. A skull and crossbones flag can be seen up ahead. Sooner than you can say 'pieces of eight' he has been captured by pirates! Taken back to their land base at Eyl Geiom tries to negotiate -- the big dogs at Berkane Sol can't find enough dubloons for the ransom so Geiom is getting worried. Suddenly a helicopter arrives and drops off a huge ransom for a stolen oil tanker. The pirates get hyped, the crew are vibed up cause they get to go home -- time for a beach party? But they need music -- Geiom still has all the gear in his dragon boat from the Island Noise album. So he strikes a deal with the swashbucklers -- a set instead of a ransom. He gets straight to work putting together new tunes that will keep everyone dancing -- the irresistible 'Eyl Booty' is the first of these to find its way on to vinyl. The whole world seems to be represented at 'Eyl.' How do you please such a diverse crowd -- Geiom decides to make Afro-centric organic percussion elements rub up against future-rustic synth action to produce a unique fusion. These tunes have been collecting props, club plays and radio hype from all the usual suspects and also other luminaries such as TRG and Roska."

Artist: GEIOM & SPAMCHOP
Title: Cave Rave
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BRKDUB 012EP
"Geiom + Spamchop find themselves in a distant mysterious land ravaged by sub zero temperatures. Across the hills they can hear faint echoes of deep bass. Crunching through the snow towards the source they discover a party in a massive cave full of odd rock formations and sparkling crystals. The ravers seem slightly unhinged but happy, dancing to strange future music that reminds our explorers of UK garage without the bling. Spamchop records some of it into his phone for future analysis -- when the pair get back to the studio Cave Rave is the result. After the beach jam which spawned 'Eyl Booty' (brk011) Geiom is making preparations to leave when one of the pirates shows him a video camera with footage of their most ambitious raid -- the capture of the Sirius Star oil tanker -- Geiom likes the idea of this ramshackle bunch going head to head with the greedy oil barons. He agrees to make the pirates something they can pump out while they make their way across the Indian Ocean -- 'give us something with a lot of bass - we kitted out our speedboats with some tasty subwoofers' is the request. Geiom also includes some audio from the footage for good measure. 'Sirius Star' is going to be rocking boats, cars and raves everywhere for some time to come."

Artist: HIZATRON/GEIOM
Title: Von Glooperstien/Bubbles
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: BRKDUB 013EP
"Special white vinyl pressing for the first 500 copies only. Part man/part machine Hizatron takes Berkane Sol in a new acidic direction with the outstanding tune that is 'Von Glooperstein.' Atmospheric, refined, techy, funky and deranged are all accurate descriptions of this ever evolving masterclass in gloop. Beautiful digi bells, crisp clicks and clacks and a monster lead line all combine to work even the most demanding dancefloor. This tune will mix with UK funky just as well as it does with techno and house. In a manic attempt to fuse half step, electro booty bass, niche and primates into one coherent whole, Geiom came up with the delicious mongrel known as 'Bubbles.' Wonky synths collide with tuff drum patterns in a tense, restless fashion which peaks with a kind of homage to the Midlands favourite underground genre, bassline house. There's a kind of psychedelic terror at the heart of this tune but it's way too playful to ever become truly menacing. Both these tunes demonstrate the high standard of musical creativity that is coming out of Nottingham right now, but give no indication of an easy to identify style. Which is just how we like it!"

Artist: GEIOM FEAT. MARITA
Title: Sugar Coated Lover
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BRKDUB 014EP
"Berkane Sol moves into a new decade with the future soul of 'Sugar Coated Lover'. Back in '08, Marita and Geiom blessed the dubstep scene with the certified classic 'Reminissin'.' This time they turn their radar towards the vibrant keys and soca style drumz of UK funky. Elements of disco, techno and house wrap themselves around Marita's delicious vocal, with a sweet synthy steel drum melody leading up to the seriously catchy hook. Marita and Geiom take the sounds of house music both old and new and create a sophisticated hybrid that joins the dots between producers like Todd Terry, Luomo and Roska. On the flip, the unstoppable Blunted Robots team of Brackles and Shortstuff take the raw elements off to their workshop, clear some space on the bench and begin to rebuild according to their own confused specifications. They fill the CPU of the new machine with the original data, a DJ EZ set and the best bits of early Search and Destroy -- after some extensive experimentation we find them both happily shockin' out -- until Shortstuff realizes that most of the vocal is missing and what's left is severely broken -- so they sprinkle on an extra helping of their sweetest arpeggios in the hope that Geiom doesn't notice. This 12" fits perfectly into the creative space that has opened up in UK underground dance music, taking ideas from garage, techno, dub, grime and house and melting them into exhilarating new forms. It has found favour with all the usual suspects including -- Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs, Rob Da Bank (Radio1), Kode 9, Scratcha DVA, Oneman, Alexander Nut (RinseFM) and Untold."

Artist: BOWLY
Title: Bleeps
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BRKDUB 015EP
"After leaving behind the Somalian pirates, Geiom is cruising the sunny waters of the Indian Ocean when he picks up a distress signal on his scanner. He follows the signal until he locates a tiny remote island and a guy called Bowly, who said that he was on his way from France to the New World, but got totally lost. Judging by the age of the map he was using it's easy to see how. Bowly spent his time on the island hanging out with the locals who amuse themselves by creating a unique style of music on some amazing handcrafted instruments. Geiom helps Bowly get on his way again, and leaves him with a more useful map. Some months later, Bowly beams over his music as a gift from his new found homeland in Canada. The tracks are like some strange mutation of those distant tropical players and the UK-based pirate radio transmissions that Bowly has been tuning into. Geiom loves the result and decides to send them straight over to Transition in London for mastering and release on Berkane Sol."

Artist: HEM FEAT. TERRIBLE SHOCK
Title: On A Mission
Label: BERKANE SOL RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BRKDUB 017EP
"For this tune Hem and Terrible Shock take apart an '80s soul LP, add some sci-fi synths, lazy drums and a sprinkling of analogue FX. After many painstaking hours of recording the duo take a well earned coffee break, then return to the studio just in time to see the back of the light-footed Blunted Robots man Shortstuff as he runs off chuckling 'your vocals are mine now!' Revenge plans are made, vehicles are fuelled up in preparation -- but these activities are cut short by the arrival of an email from the culprit -- it seems that he took the files back to his HQ for what he describes as a 'refix' -- with the engines still running, Hem and Shox check out the file and find it to be a work of genius -- what they hear is an accelerated kaleidoscopic fusion of on-beat claps and snares in a peak-time northern soul style, super heavy sub bass hits and hectic syncopated keyboard chops. The easy tempo and flow of the original have been transformed into a dancefloor classic, no doubt about it. Hem and Shox call off the troops and head back to the studio -- calls are made, contracts drawn up and everything gets sent off to Transition for the magical transfer to vinyl. For the flipside the duo select 2 fresh beats from the archives featuring all the trademark Hem elements - flexible riddims, slinky edits, fat synths, warm bass tones, hip-house references... The refix of 'On a Mission' featured on Onemans' much-loved Rinse 11 mix CD."
