Reservoir/Just Say
Label:
BOX CLEVER (UK)
Format:
10"
Price:
$9.00
Catalog #:
BOXCL 001EP
" In the space of only 9 months, Black Box has become a buy-on-sight label for many dubstep fans, with a reliable combination of well-known artists and quality beats making it a must for everyone's record bag. Given the amount of quality unsigned music now circulating, here at Black Box HQ we've found room for a sister label 'Box Clever', through which we plan to push cutting-edge tunes by newer artists. Each release will be sleeved in the new custom die-cut Box Clever sleeve and limited to 500 copies only for extra collectability. To launch our new label Box Clever, we've got two tunes from one of the breakthrough artists of 2010 -- SYNKRO -- recently signed to dBridge's Autonomic label, as well as Med School and Blackout Music. 'Reservoir' opens with a lush soundbed of tabla and glassy pads that leads onto a hypnotising drop - rolling halfstep drums, clockwork percussion and rising swells of bass pressure, laced with LFOs and light-touch edits."

CYMATIC
Title:
Electric Church/Jungle Fever
Label:
BOX CLEVER (UK)
Format:
10"
Price:
$9.00
Catalog #:
BOXCL 003EP
"Although the name Cymatic may be new, it represents a coming-together of four talented artists into one production think tank - Ruckspin & Quantum Soul [Ranking Records] and Octane & DLR [Dispatch Recordings] have pooled their ideas to produce one of the most exciting 140bpm projects to date. 'Electric Church' opens with a swirling miasma of strings and pads, accented heavily with esoteric vocal samples, before dropping into a heavy dub workout -- tough drums, buzzing basslines and a dizzying mix of edited percussion and synthwork. Strictly limited to 500 units."

BENTON
Title:
Sinners/Necromancy
Label:
BOX CLEVER (UK)
Format:
10"
Price:
$9.00
Catalog #:
BOXCL 004EP
"The next wave of Croydonites are coming through, spearheaded by the hotly-tipped producer Benton, protégé of Rinse FM's DJ N-type. 'Sinners' is a brutal, skulking slice of halfstep, employing dread techniques on an industrial palette of sounds to evoke a harsh, bleak audioscape. Hard-smacking snares, punchy bass hits and grinding atmospherics all come together to create a stone cold killer track. 'Necromancy' on the flip is a depth charge ready to strike in murky waters."
Artist:
LURKA
Title:
Return/Stabiliser
Label:
BOX CLEVER (UK)
Format:
10"
Price:
$9.00
Catalog #:
BOXCL 005EP
"2011 looks set to be a big year for Lurka. Following the storming success of his debut 'Tempted' on Black Box, he has cooked up something rather special for Box Clever. 'Return' sees Lurka on a deep, tribal tip, building the tune around the solid kick/sub foundation as he slowly adds elements to the mix. First the hats and swooping white noise, next the dark incidental FX, then retro edits and filtered breaks -- a heady combination that leaves the listener transfixed. Lurka keeps the mood meditational with 'Stabiliser', layering tight percussion lines to produce effortless movement. Crisp handclap beats are swarmed by shakers, finger-snaps, and loping bongo-riffs in a masterclass of drumwork execution."

CYMATIC
Title:
Glue/Hound Dog
Label:
BOX CLEVER (UK)
Format:
10"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
BOXCL 007EP
Following their acclaimed debut release on Box Clever in 2010,
Cymatic
have produced two more musical tone poems. "Glue" lumbers from the dramatic atmospherics of the intro into the drop, with leadweight subs and halfstep drums surrounded by trademark Cymatic edits. "Hound Dog" sees both artist and label at their most experimental, as a historic King has his performance dissected and reassembled into a twisted live jam of cut-up clockwork breaks, flailing bass manipulation and phantom-like silhouettes of sound.

Tribe/Here's Your

Price:

Synkro
has become an increasingly familiar name in underground circles, with notable appearances on
Gilles Peterson
's Brownswood and Exit Recordings. Having helped to launch Box Clever on 001, he's back for another installment in the 10" series. "Tribe" is built around a tight rhythmic framework -- stuttering drums and digitized glitches form a mesh upon which Synkro hangs expansive pads, yearning male chants and heavy layers of sub bass, while "Here's Your" taps into Synkro's deep understanding of the UKG groove.
Artist:
KAHN
Title:
Way Mi Defend/Azalea
Label:
BOX CLEVER (UK)
Format:
10"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
BOXCL 009EP
Box Clever present
Kahn
's second record, which sees him take his music to darker, more intense territory. "Way Mi Defend" is a militant stepper, where ticking cymbals and war-like dread speech introduce shuffle-grooved beats and tough boom bass. As the battle progresses, Kahn piles on the pressure, adding speaker-test sub bursts and rolling, tribal drums. "Azalea" finds Kahn in a slightly more reflective mood, delicately-arranged strings providing the backing for sultry French vocal samples, echo-chamber snares and subterranean bass pressure.

KILLAWATT/KILLAWATT & IPMAN
Title:
Mantra/Schizophonia
Label:
BOX CLEVER (UK)
Format:
10"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
BOXCL 011EP
The next step in
Killawatt
's musical uprising comes courtesy of
DJ Thinking
's specialist imprint, Box Clever. On both sides, whether solo or working with occasional collaborator
Ipman
, Killawatt has channeled the vibes of FWD>> circa 2004, when
Hatcha
ruled the PP soundsystem with his brand of tribal funk. "Mantra" opens to the sound of chanting from some lost Gondwanaland clan, joined by skipping drums, subtly-blended percussion and insistent electro bleeps. Ipman joins on "Schizophonia" with a darker, more low-slung vibe.
Artist:
LAS
Title:
Memories/Mental Judgement
Label:
BOX CLEVER (UK)
Format:
10"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
BOXCL 012EP
LAS
weaves a rich tapestry of sound on "Memories," silken pads and resonant bell tones drifting around effortless drum-work and rich bass undulations. "Mental Judgement" is more militant in tone, with steppah drums and pounding 808 subs powering a bongo-driven dub track.
