Featured pieces: Andre Jolivet: "Cérémonial, Hommage a Varèse Pour Six Percussionists" (1968); Steve Reich: "Six Marimbas" (1986); Tan Dun: "Elegy: Snow In June, Concerto for Cello and Percussion" (1991); Babette Koblenz: "Salpetriere, Version B for 4 Percussionists" (1993). "The percussion ensemble H/F/M developed out of the percussion studio of the Wuppertal College of Music, and has concertized for severaI years independent of the college. For larger projects, the core formation of four percussionists is complemented by students from the college's percussion studio. Thus, the ensemble is in a position to take on the entire percussion repertoire. In doing so, a particular concern is the rediscovery of little-known works that have been pushed into the background by the hustle and bustle of the 'new music' scene (with its standardized process of premiere followed by oblivion). The ensemble's musical director Christian Roderburg has been a freelance percussionist for 30 years. Since 1991, Roderburg has taught a percussion studio at the Cologne College of Music, Wuppertal campus. André Jolivet wrote about his work: '
Cérémonial
developed into a powerful and ardent procession in memory of Varése, whose friend and only pupil I was. In this work, all the sonorous resources of the Percussions de Strasbourg are employed for the first time. The wealth and the variety of possibilities allow different combinations of timbres, creating a distinctly symphonic impression. The rhythm of the piece is simultaneously based on ancient Greek (amphibrach, spondaic, anapest, choriamb), Turkic-Romanic (aksak), African, and -- also -- European rhythms.'"
