CHERRY RED (UK)
Format:

Price:
$19.00
Catalog #:
PPCR 011DVD
"Issued for the first time as a DVD collection, the videos of Julian Cope and Teardrop Explodes display some seminal moments of genius and English pop/rock history. This collection tracks ten years in the life of Julian Cope, through times when he burnt out, rose again, burnt out, and then rose again -- showing why he got the epithet 'flawed genius.' Beginning with his work as part of legendary UK rock band The Teardrop Explodes and continuing onto his highly successful solo career -- the DVD charts the extraordinary musical and personal journey that Cope experienced during the period. Many believe that he was a weirdo pretending to be normal -- but the theory of a normal guy pretending to be sub-normal and displaying genius is more than borne out by the contents of this DVD. These are the complete works of an enigma." Running time: 60 mins. 5.1 Surround Sound, NTSC format, Region-free.

Miniatures One + Two

CHERRY RED (UK)
Format:
2CD
Price:
$19.00
Catalog #:
CDBRED 361CD
"Featuring artists as diverse as The Residents, Robert Fripp, XTC's Andy Partridge, Pete Seeger, Robert Wyatt and The Pretenders' Martin Chambers, as well as cover artwork contributed by Ralph Steadman, Morgan Fisher's 1980 release
Miniatures
truly was a first. Overwhelmed with concepts for potential releases, Fisher decided to see how many of these ideas he might be able to squeeze onto just one album. Rather than performing everything himself, he invited 50 musicians he admired to send in tracks of up to one minute in length. They responded with unanimous enthusiasm, and
Miniatures
was born out of Morgan's precise editing and sequencing of these tracks, providing a unique snapshot of the cutting-edge music of the period and achieving legendary status amongst those who cherish such creativity and individuality in the process. Fast forward 15 years, several projects and the development of new realms of communication and data transfer afforded by the internet, and Morgan decided the time was right for a sequel. Little did he know that this project would take six years to complete and involve an international cast of players (taking in 18 countries across five continents), but it proved truly worth both the effort and the wait. The astounding
Miniatures 2
brings together over 60 musicians and artists of all genres -- the bizarre, the eccentric, the contemplative, the rebel-rousers, the pioneers and the philosophers and no stone was left unturned in its creation. As with the original album, one minute creations were composed, then sequenced and edited by Morgan, again meeting with rave reviews and an acknowledgement that Fisher had produced something both original and vital to those with any interest in music existing outside the mainstream. Comprising both legendary tiny masterpiece collections, this new set brings together all one hundred and thirteen tracks (yes, 113!) in one two-disc collection for the first time, freshly boosted and tweaked for 2008. New artwork and sleeve-notes have also been provided by Morgan himself." Artists include: The Residents, Robert Wyatt, Fred Frith, Lol Coxhill, Steve Miller, Robert Fripp, Ron Geesin, Ralph Steadman, Trevor Wishart, Ivor Cutle, Metabolist, Gavin Bryars, 1/2 Japanese, David Cunningham (The Flying Lizards), Etron Fou Leloublan, Terry Riley, Meredith Monk, David Cunningham, & Moondog (Louis Hardin).

The Hybrid Kids 1+2: Two Collections of Classic Mutants
Label:
CHERRY RED (UK)
Format:
2CD
Price:
$19.00
Catalog #:
CDBRED 362CD
"Before
Miniatures
, there was Hybrid Kids. Take a collection of classics by musical behemoths The Beatles, Kate Bush, The Sex Pistols, The Righteous Brothers, Brotherhood Of Man and suchlike, and perform them in a style as diametrically opposite to the original as one can imagine. Therein lies the manifesto that brought the world the wonderfully twisted take on pop music that is Hybrid Kids. Being the first album recorded in Fisher s own Pipe Studios (actually his Notting Hill bedsit, fact fans), Hybrid Kids was conceived as a compilation album featuring a variety of spoof 'bands' hailing from the very real but somewhat obscure Peabody (a town in Kansas, USA) each would perform their own take on a well known number, with wildly unpredictable results. Equally predictably, when the self styled Collection Of Classic Mutants was announced and discussed in the press, a large number of hipsters and music buffs believed every word and eagerly anticipated its release Phrases such as terrifying work of genius, downright creepy and nearly obscene were commonplace in reviews of the record, and it quickly passed into folklore as a work of unique originality and the kind of sonic experimentation rarely applied to such mainstream material. A true classic a fact highlighted by the media interest in its imminent reissue in combination with its equally intriguing sister album. So, having caused something of a stir with a warped compilation of material performed by non-existent acts from a far off town nobody had ever heard of, where does one go next? The answer, in retrospect, seems obvious the tried and tested Christmas album, performed by the self same Hybrid Kids. Claws (released a year after its predecessor), saw Morgan tackle such Xmas favorites as Deck The Halls, Good King Wenceslas and Happy Xmas (War Is Over) in his own inimitable style, with equally unorthodox results. Perhaps not one to play when Granny drops by for her pre Xmas lunch glass of sherry, but definitely something any discerning audio adventurer should find a few moments for amongst their festive celebrations. Both albums are accompanied by bonus tracks and have been retouched for 2008 by Morgan himself."

CDMRED 069CD
"As part of Cherry Red's 30th anniversary commemorations -- we shall be revisiting many key artists' releases and they will be remastered, repressed and re-promoted. What better than to kickstart proceedings with one of Mike Alway's first signings -- the esteemed band, Eyeless In Gaza. Here's what Martyn Bates himself has to say about the title song on this CD: '"Back From The Rains" -- my personal, utter favorite of anything we've ever, ever done... just something about the instrumentation gets me, really excites and moves me, quite apart from the song itself, which I'm so proud of -- the instrumentation, it's like a mad soupçon of different and clashing elements... the mournful harmonica, crazy wailing voices, a delicious bluesy bass line, and Pete's mad, wonderful drums; he plays a totally unorthodox set of drums, and it really works like a dream on the right song... he played drums all over
Rust Red September
, and it was his characteristic unorthodox approach that helped to make that album such an individual voice... but now, with this album, it's like we've got the best of both worlds, with Pete and Joby Palmer drumming in the studio. Strengths and weaknesses are shared, according to the demands of each song, whatever each song requires... tho' it's generally Joby who is the solid backbone type drummer, and Pete who is the 'eccentric' player, knocking and tapping and banging everything in sight at eighteen to the dozen... the lyric just has to be one of the most naked and tender things I've ever written... it echoes "Welcome Now" in its sentiment, really, except that it's so much more personal and close, so close it aches... that's me doing the barmy soprano choirboy bit in the background; a duet with myself, thanks to the miracle of technology! ...if I never lift another finger to make any more music, it's almost as if "That's OK, everything's said now"; to me it's so special -- I don't know, we must have been possessed when we recorded this!'"

Repress of this CD originally issued in 1991, featuring the classic 1979 singles by the Niagra-fronted version of this band. Drumming The Beating Heart/Pale Hands I Loved So Well
Label:
CHERRY RED (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
CDMRED 127CD
"Martyn Bates and Peter Becker had been recording together for two years when
Pale Hands I Loved So Well
and
Drumming The Beating Heart
, respectively the 3rd and 4th Eyeless in Gaza albums, were released. Both albums have a magic that has endured and
Pale Hands
is especially wondrous, witnessing the maturation of EIG's gift for evocative improvisational impressionism.
Drumming
opens with 'Transience Blues,' a definitive EIG track that summons April showers with throbbing bass, parched organ, and Bates' impassioned vocals. The organ defines the album, as Bates' singing compliments the instrument's alternately sinuous ('Ill Wind Blows'), sweet ('One By One'), and simmering ('Picture the Day') tone. Improvised settings invest the music with a refreshing openness, as though such songs as 'Veil Like Calm' and 'Lights of April' were sprung straight from the heart -- not from the studio.
Drumming
's lovely second half looks back at the gorgeous sketch-work of
Pale Hands
. The latter's scattered strokes of piano, guitar, organ, vocal sighs and chants, bells, sax, glockenspiel, and rough percussion achieve music of rare beauty, imagistic power, and genuine consequence. A masterpiece!"

"As part of Cherry Red's 30th anniversary commemorations, we shall be revisiting many key artist's releases and they will be remastered, re-pressed and re-promoted. Following on from our successful Eyeless In Gaza re-promotion, we are now delighted to re-press two solo Martyn Bates albums that were originally released in 1982 and 1987, respectively (CD issue was originally from 1996). If you are not familiar with these albums, then you are in for a positive treat! Martyn is an artist who has expressed his evolving vision over a period of more than 25 years. He has no time for any concept of musical purity and instead seems to bend and adapt it to become part of his wider notion of folk arts. His is a true evolution of traditional creative arts, providing signposts for our reintegration with the landscape and nature. Martyn spends his time creating music that is music which brings together our past with the present, expressing his hope for change through the bringing together of art, nature and humanity."

Label:
CHERRY RED (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
CDMRED 145CD
"Here's an original review back in 1981, for this their second album: 'With animated gestures of disdain Eyeless In Gaza can answer detractors who dismissed their debut LP,
Photographs As Memories
, as a precious exercise in the art of self-indulgence.
Caught In Flux
, the band's second offering of the year, is a measure of progress, and though there's still room for growth some mark of maturity has undoubtedly been forged.
Caught In Flux
a package which includes an additional 'free' 12" Eyeless sampler,
The Eyes Of Beautiful Losers
is a piercing, poison jab into the blood-stream of rock music's lazy limbs. Radical but clear, Eyeless set the examples for others to follow by eradicating standard rock structures and starting out from now tangents. Accessible experimentalists whose work roughly moulds fresh shapes of things to come, they don't seek to advance or change rock. They seek to destroy it completely. Their alternative is to present frail labyrinth of subtle sound, a strange menagerie of modern mood music that holds melody, has poise and a lot of style. All of which is enhanced by Martyn Bates' distinctive vocals which are as versatile as they are uniquely employed. Whether crooning along to some reflective ballad or spitting out some punchy polemic, Bates' alluring voice is an awesome focus of attention. But
Caught In Flux
is most specifically an introspective LP, a thoughtful compilation of new songs and sound patterns, skilfully patched together and performed. It's meditative music for active minds, an exciting vision of a brave new whirl. Eyeless... but not blind!'"

Photographs As Memories
Label:
CHERRY RED (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
CDMRED 166CD
"Here's an original review back in 1981, for this their first album for Cherry Red: 'The days of the garage groups are gone. The bands of today are being born in bedrooms and the latest in the increasing line of DIY knob-doodling duos are Eyeless In Gaza from Leamington Spa. Much in the mood of Orchestral Manoeuvres, Martyn Bates and Pete Becker take more risks, talk more dirty and act more arty than the Liverboys but you shouldn't let that put you off. Although
Photographs As Memories
is an awkward album that initially sounds irritating and samey, like a rough assortment of improvisations over very similar backing tracks, further listening reaps rewards, revealing a record made up more of experimental fragments than actual bona-fide songs. Starting and finishing somewhat arbitrarily, each individual track attempts, with varying degrees of success, to define a different mood, ranging from the malice and menace of "Keepsake" and the boisterous bubblegum bop of "No Noise" to the weird and worrying "In Your Painting" -- a sort of "Weaver's Answer" for the Eighties. Predominantly featuring scratchy, freely-scuttling guitar over basic drumbeats, and atmospheric keyboards and occasionally augmented by unnecessary and incongruous Beefheartean sax, Eyeless's real strengths and weaknesses lie in their overblown vocals which, while inhibiting literal understanding, instill the proceedings with crucial emotion. A cross between unbridled passion and stylish effect, the voice is by turns crudely convincing and theatrically histrionic, resulting in an album that simultaneously soothes as it unnerves.
Photographs
constantly strives for something special, very seldom fully succeeds but even its many pitfalls and failures make for an interesting, invigorating listen.'"

"Medium Medium were originally signed to Cherry Red in 1981 and were one of the first signings of then A&R man Mike Alway. The band's first single,
Hungry, So Angry
caused quite an immediate stir at club and alternative radio level, and created quite a buzz around the band. The single was picked up by alternative radio in the U.S. and featured for several weeks in the
Billboard
Alternative Top 50 chart. The band recorded one album for Cherry Red,
The Glitterhouse
which received consistently good reviews. However, the band broke up in 1983 but were not forgotten as 'Hungry, So Angry' has been used on many compilation CDs over the years, especially in the U.S. This overdue CD re-press consists of 15 tracks and also includes the very rare promo video of 'Hungry, So Angry; as an enhanced track."

"Their songs have been covered by acts as diverse as Ride, Boney M and the Sex Pistols; they impressed Pete Townshend so much that he asked their guitarist to join the already successful Who; said guitarist pioneered the use of the violin bow on guitar strings -- a trick promptly lifted and made famous by Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page; they inspired the name of Creation Records, the most influential record label of the '90s; they have been cited as an influence by Paul Weller, Alan McGee, Ride, Pete Townshend, John Lydon and others. Yet The Creation never had a bona fide hit single in either Britain or the U.S. They had a recording career that spanned merely mid-1966 to early 1968 and never -- in their original incarnation -- released an album on either side of the Atlantic. The Creation are pop's quintessential example of Never Mind The Career Width, Feel The Musical Quality. Their compositions 'Makin' Time,' 'Painter Man,' 'Biff Bang Pow,' 'Nightmares,' 'Can I Join Your Band,' 'Life Is Just Beginning,' 'Through My Eyes,' 'How Does It Feel To Feel' and others helped define psychedelia and pop art and are cherished by several different generations of music fans. The Creation were undoubtedly one of the most under-appreciated bands to emerge from the UK during the 1960s, but their legend has grown with time and this album, recorded in 1987 and 1988 and never been released before in any form, is a testament to their enduring legacy. You know the story, you know the legend, this is the long-lost album."

CHERRY RED (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
CDMRED 282CD
"Bridget St John was one of the first acts signed to John Peel's legendary Dandelion Records. Cherry Red are re-releasing her first three albums with several bonus tracks that are appearing on CD for the first time. The first two albums also feature John Martyn playing guitar on some tracks.
Ask Me No Questions
was originally released in 1969. '
The music within was a treasure trove -- friendly, poetic, organic, a little sparse maybe but played and sung for all the right reasons. John Peel served as producer and guide after hosting Bridget at the BBC studios. The album opened with the two songs chosen for her debut 7" and both were staples of her live repertoire. 'Curl Your Toes' was exactly what it said, sung in that sunny low register one always associates with Bridget. The album's title track was its piece de resistance -- a magnificent sound picture of pastoral England and a fine companion piece to the Floyd's 'Grantchester Meadow' -- an amazing number with harmony vocals and second guitar by John Martyn, with its middle section full of the sounds of the countryside before the guitars come back a second time. Sadly,
Ask Me No Questions
did not sell in huge quantities but it certainly gained her a small but dedicated following and laid the foundations for her albums that followed in the 1970s -- and its naive and minimal production values, delicate playing and heartfelt singing make it an album I return to often especially when I want to evoke the atmosphere of the late '60s.
' --Nigel Cross, linernotes. All these albums have become very collectable with
Ask Me No Questions
changing hands for over £100 recently. These CDs contain detailed sleeve notes written by Nigel Cross in cooperation with Bridget; she was also involved with selecting the bonus tracks."

CHERRY RED (UK)
Format:

Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
CDMRED 283CD
This was Bridget St. John's second album, originally released in 1971. "If her debut album had shown little in the way of 'production values,' then her second LP tipped towards the other end of the scale. Recorded at Sound Techniques in Chelsea, where everybody from Fairport to Nick Drake had made albums, this was a far more sophisticated work than its predecessor. And a more confident and outward-looking Bridget had emerged from its shadows too! The album opened with 'A Day A Way,' with Bridget's gentle lilting voice and guitar gliding in and out of the lush woodwinds. Organized around a small chamber orchestra,
Songs For the Gentle Man
was replete with strings, horn and piano. As critic and author Kim cooper, writing about it in
Lost in the Grooves
, so eloquently expressed, this is '
a set of cool, pastel originals garnished with a pinch of John Martyn or a splash of Donovan... Imagine a Nico of the buttercups, all sunshine, smiles and cautious optimism... a small record, yet one that fills the room and lingers.

Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
CDMRED 286CD
Originally released in 1972, this is Bridget St. John's third album. "
Thank You For...
was the closet Bridget ever got to full-fledged folk rock and was the album that should have finally established her as one of the leading singer/songwriters of her generation. The early '70s saw an explosion of solo performers armed with just a guitar or piano make their mark and 'soft rock' was the order of the day -- listening now to this record and her previous ones, it remains a mystery as to why she didn't go beyond a cult following. She definitely wrote and performed material that was the equal and at time even better than that of the late Nick Drake or Sandy Denny. The third album began on an upbeat note with 'Nice' and for the first time on a Bridget record there was a delightful country undercurrent as Matthews Southern Comfort's Gordon Huntley added some very attractive pedal steel guitar." --Nigel Cross, linernotes.

2CDs for the price of one. "The music emulating from in and around Bristol in the southwest of England during the late '70s and early '80s remains today as some of the most innovative and important from that era. Many of the creators of these sounds went on to do great things internationally, though it's the origins that this release is centered on. Heartbeat Records, Bristol's premiere independent label managed to capture most of this through a series of now highly acclaimed 7" singles -- now much sought after by collectors, and with the showcase compilation album
Avon Calling
described by John Peel as '
the one that sets the standard for any future compilation, not a bad track on it -- truly superb

La Varieté
was the 1982 debut album by Weekend, formed by Alison Statton of much-loved Welsh avant-garde/indie pioneers the Young Marble Giants alongside guitarists Simon Booth and Spike. A beautifully realized and delicate collection of songs set against a jazz backdrop, it switches across myriad musical settings including samba, cabaret, Afrobeat and highly personal, confessional pop. The album was originally released in 1982 on the Rough Trade label and made it to No 4 in the Independent charts staying in there for 15 weeks. It was revered by critics on release as a bold new departure from the prevailing post-punk ethos and served as a major influence on Saint Etienne, the Sundays, Belle and Sebastian and many others. Whilst John Peel fans and music collectors alike wait with anticipation to see if the rumours are true, Cherry Red releases two albums from the Dandelion catalogue to whet the appetite, both from the curiously spectacular, Principal Edwards Magic Theatre. The multi-media PEMT cut a compellingly original swathe through a late-1960s music scene seemingly inhabited by wall-to-wall blues bands. Their first ever gig was witnessed by benefactor and producer John Peel. The legendary DJ promptly signed them to his Dandelion label. "The story so far: multi-media band Principal Edwards Magic Theatre, formed by a group of students at Exeter University, had signed to Radio 1 DJ John Peel's record label and released a first album,

, in August 1969. Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason was brought in to produce a second album, released in January 1971. For his part, Mason is happy to recall those hazy days as best he could for this reissue. '
My memory of the recording was that I really enjoyed it. I must have done to some extent because I did two of them!

2007 release. "Cherry Red is delighted to announce the release of another classic album from John Peel's Dandelion Records catalogue, 1971's self-titled Stack Waddy, a raucous four-piece from Manchester. Peel had first seen the band at the Buxton Blues Festival in September 1969. Their performance made a big impression, and a first single, 'Kentucky'/'Roadrunner', was released just under a year later in August 1970, they soon became Peel's favorite band on the label. Raw, rockin' power bottled in 1971 and unleashed again here! On stage they were loud, aggressive, fairly pissed and remarkably unsubtle, as befitted musicians who were often forced to supplement their meager gig money by working days on construction sites. Their frustrations and energies were poured into music that it was impossible to ignore. In fact, you were better off not to try to ignore it because one of the many Stack Waddy atrocity stories has John Knail (lead singer) jumping off-stage to beat to the floor a man who was paying more attention to his lady than to the band. As the late John Peel OBE said 'Stackwaddy were absolutely incorrigible, everything a rock' n 'roll band should be.'"

"A timely retrospective of one of the less heralded groups of the classic Cherry Red era of the early '80s but one in whom interest is growing. Musically akin to such contemporaries as Wire and This Heat, Five or Six had the distinction of providing the opening track ('Portrait') to Cherry Red's historic
Pillows and Prayers
compilation and this little masterpiece is duly featured on this Best Of collection. Also featured are such stellar singles as 'Another Reason' (produced by the late and very legendary Kevin Coyne) and 'Polar Exposure' and also the outstanding cuts from their impossibly rare and greatly sought after Spanish import album,
Play Me That Song That Goes Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
. After the group disbanded, its members went on to a multifarious range of artistic occupations, such as members of Spring Heel Jack, the Shock Headed Peters, at Factory Records and 4AD Records and in the drama department of the BBC."

"The Dandelion label, formed by Radio 1 DJ John Peel with his manager Clive Selwood in 1969, was an attempt by both founders to put something back into the business they loved. The object was to bring deserving but hitherto unrecognized talents to the public's attention on a non-profit basis. As Clive's day job was European representative of Elektra Records, it's not surprising 'Dandy' (as it was known) majored on the singer-songwriter genre. And to Beau, alias Trevor Midgley, fell the honor of the label's first release in 1969 with the single '1917 Revolution.' Later that year, Dandelion released his full LP self-titled
Beau

"Suave; debonair; sophisticated. Haughty, perhaps, for those who favor the pejorative. Aristocratic in more than one sense, classy in at least as many. The Monochrome Set were effortlessly inventive, literate, poised and immaculate of tuneage, possessed of an internal dialogue as a band that allowed them to surf their own narrative. They were just unlike anything else, in layman's terms. Instead, their sound harked back to a golden era of British pop songwriters. But there was nothing retrogressive about their endeavors. Instead, they wrote songs that recreated the drama and promise of a Pearl & Dean interval theme, veering from lullaby to mambo to harmonic pop, accompanied by lush melodies and irresistibly playful lyrics that embraced morbidity at one extreme, and pitch-perfect satire at another. Because they could. This is The Monochrome Set's complete independent singles collection including B-sides and rare tracks."

Perfect Unpop
is based on a dangerous assumption: that if you were ever touched by John Peel's enthusiasm for spiky '70s pop, then by now you've probably found yourself a copy of the Undertones'
Teenage Kicks
. The same applies to raw, beautiful singles by the Buzzcocks, Joy Division, the Clash and the first five Fall albums none of which are included here. Instead, here's a collection of Peel favorites a little less likely to be anthologized, eulogized, or to crop up on your iPod. Anyone who ever cuddled up alone at night with Peel will recognize the glee with which he pounced on these devil-may-care, slightly broken pop songs. Indie also-rans these bands may have been in the Sting 'n' Bono scheme of things, but add up all these flashes of underdog genius, and here s a CD to rival any other from the era of the questionable stringy tie. Although we're missing the voice that always seemed to be speaking to us alone, the unearthing of these nuggets from the playlists will recreate something of the atmosphere of the Peel Show for his undercover legions, and hopefully some young Johnny-cum-latelies as well. Make no mistake, we're talking all-time highlights here where six seconds of dead air would be followed by a sheepish, slightly breathless admission that Peel had been off bopping around the studio!" The resulting recording, entitled No New York and produced by Eno, remains as one of the most impressive and extraordinarily bold debuts of the time. "The Shop Assistants were one of the defining bands of the '80s independent boom. Formed in Edinburgh in 1984, originally as Buba & The Shop Assistants, they released the Peel-approved indie staple Something To Do , which featured Stephen Pastel on backing vocals. With line-up changes and an abbreviated name, they released the
Shopping Parade
EP a year later, which saw Morrissey describe 'All Day Long' (included on this collection) as his favorite track of the year. The band's David Keegan (who would subsequently join the Pastels) then formed 53rd & 3rd Records, which housed the band's 'Safety Net,' one of two songs, along with 'I Don't Want To Be Friends With You' (again, included here) to be voted part of John Peel's Festive Fifty of 1986. They also featured on that year's celebrated, infamous, nay, iconic
C86 NME
compilation. This re-release incorporates the material they released after signing to Chrysalis' Blue Guitar subsidiary.
The Shop Assistants

"The Monochrome Set defined themselves in the late '70s and '80s as England's wittiest troubadours, avoiding the somber overtones of post-punk by penning songs that had a clean '60s pop sensibility, allied to vocalist and guitarist Bid's sandpaper-dry reflections on life and love. Re-released for the first time on CD in the UK, this CD documents the band's time at Blanco y Negro Records, the mini-major set up by Mike Alway (Cherry Red) and Geoff Travis (Rough Trade). It was a turbulent period for the band, recounted in full in the accompanying booklet by a reflective Bid. Including the story behind 'Letter From Viola,' perhaps the funniest Dear John song ever written (hint: never allow your bandmates to cut your hair while touring Norway and expect romantic favours on your return). All tracks have been digitally remastered from the original audio sources. Five bonus tracks are included, including additional mixes of the two singles housed on the album, 'Jacob s Ladder,' the band's nearly hit, and 'Wallflower.'"

"When writer William S. Burroughs and artist Brion Gysin met Anthony Balch at the Beat Hotel in Paris at the start of the '60s they knew they had the ideal person to assist them in translating the ideas they had explored in experimental art forms to film. Balch began his movie-making career collaborating with Burroughs on two shorts 'Towers Open Fire' and 'The Cut Ups.' The former is a relatively straightforward attempt to capture the essence of Burroughs writing on film, utilizing key themes and situations featured in his books. The latter is an attempt to cinematically represent the art form. To achieve this, each scene was filmed and edited in its entirety before the cut up method was applied -- physically cutting the movie into foot long lengths and splicing them together randomly. Following the death of Anthony Balch in 1980, the films remained untouched and virtually forgotten at his home until the intervention of Psychic TV's Genesis P.Orridge, who salvaged and archived them. This unique collection comprises all the films made during that lengthy period of collaboration between Burroughs, Gysin and Balch. In addition to the finished works, the video includes a 50-minute film called 'Ghosts at No. 9' which uses cut-ups of film and superimpositions, material from the extensive archive of Psychic TV and to which Orridge added the distinctive soundtrack -- making

"Of all the cult west coast 1960s groups, perhaps the most talked about and referenced over the last few years have been The Merry Go Round, though bizarrely, the last reissue of their work was a Rhino vinyl best-of in 1984. Boy genius Emitt Rhodes left the drum seat in The Palace Guard to front his own band recruited from the disbanding Gene Clark Group among others. Signing to A&M they quickly scored two hits 'Live' and 'You're A Very Lovely Woman,' and a superb album, getting Emitt covers by such as Fairport Convention, before disbanding as Emitt became more and more interested in recording in his home studio than touring. They had, however, cut a large quantity of material, and when Emitt briefly became a solo star with his home recorded albums on Dunhill, some of it was released by A&M. Here for the first time ever, is a comprehensive anthology of the work of this most enigmatic of L.A. pop groups -- one whose links to Gene Clark, The Grass Roots, Paul McCartney, Curt Boettcher and Herb Alpert (on whose 1967 TV special they featured) emerge in the detailed notes."
