This is the first full-length release by Berlin's Format:B. Steam Circuit comes with a lot of pressure and fun, but by all means is so much more than just a load of hot air. With "Dope On Plastic," both start a dub and percussion rollercoaster-ride: the stripped-down structure in the beginning unfolds seamlessly to a wildly grooving dub-inferno. Similarly funky "Push It" features dodgy FM-sounds and weird synth bleeps, plus a whole load of rhythm. On "Running," they add some fine, dubby ingredients to their rhythm patterns, next exit Detroit. "Good Vibes" zigzags elegantly, with deep, pulsating melodies, an uplifting groove, and a fast pace.

The duo asked the question: "Is there life in outer space?" and were easily answered by the sound-universe that they created on Dark Orbit. From the mesmerizing glitter of "Supernova," to the funky vocal cuts drifting through "Starry Fog," to the off-the-beaten-track explorations of "Hubble," this album maps out new galaxies and star systems of sound. "Quantum Jump" is a springboard to a parallel universe made out of pulsating bass and vocal sequences, echoing to us from the depths of space. The "Black Hole" in Heinrichs & Hirtenfellner's world works somehow backwards -- instead of eating energy, it spills all over -- making the impact of this track as powerful as a meteor storm. Forms is perhaps the most complex and mature album to date from Berlin producer and DJ Todd Bodine. As a DJ playing around the world and as a producer in the highest ranks of consistency, Todd Bodine has constantly developed as an artist. Releases and remixes on respected labels, and collaborations with various artists have made him an internationally-popular electronic musician. In 2007, he finally began to perform as a live act, and, as Todd shows with Forms, his innate knowledge of the two sides of electronic dance music has only exponentially increased. This is a meeting of peak-time euphoria with the relaxing bliss of the hazy morning light. A meeting of hypnotic natural rhythms and driving, cut-up sounds. Todd can impress you with dancefloor bombs and also with his sophisticated sound visions. The sound of Detroit would probably be the best comparison. All of the tracks are cleverly designed to work without being overly intellectual. You just have to find the right point and with a tiny needle, it's possible to trigger an amazing result. Tom Clark's Pressure Points is just such an album, knowing exactly the right places to exert pressure and thereby leading listeners by invisible threads into a truly hypnotic and pleasurable experience. It has been some time in the making, for there has been a lot to do, but the time has proven well worth it. This is not a club album, as he says, Pressure Points shows something of Clark's other side, and of his musical background. It is a confident and complex, but perfectly coordinated album that reflects Tom Clark's artistic development and is oriented to the sound of his DJ sets: groovy, deep and full of class. Twelve tracks ranging from downbeat journeys into minimal house, pushing at all the right points of its listeners. The tracks move slowly but constantly forward and enter into your body like a subtle herbal medicine. We can hear that Tom Clark is not interested in an immediate and superficial reaction from his dancers. Here he finds a more relaxed and more permanent effect. You don't have to listen actively, the feeling is automatic. There is no escape. You could call Clark's sound melancholic or anxious, and it's entirely fascinating, especially the tracks with Wareika singer Florian Schirmacher, which emphasize the full, holistic effect. Pressure Points is a timeless and universal album that will reveal more and more on every listen. This is music that gives its audience exactly what they need.

This is the debut album from Romanian producer/DJ Mihai Popoviciu. Among the luminaries of the trend is Mihai Popoviciu, one of the most innovative producers in Eastern Europe. Highgrade Records celebrates its 100th release with 12 tracks from the Highgrade Disharmonic Orchestra. The creative combo featuring both label bosses Tom Clark and Todd Bodine, alongside Philip Bader, Daniel Dreier and Dale, began over a year ago with the intention of celebrating the tenth birthday of the Berlin label. And the resulting gift: a musical experiment. The five artists have bundled their creativity together into a symphony unparalleled in the techno scene. Every performance is like a jam session: All five laptops are interconnected, so each of the artists has the opportunity to react to the others and modify each track as desired. Thus, new arrangements are created and constantly re-interpreted. Drum machines and synthesizers are also in play, to further stretch the improvisational possibilities. No wonder then, that the 100th release follows in this creative vein. The Highgrade Disharmonic Orchestra, with Multilayer, kidnaps us away into vastly different musical worlds: from deep influences and custom recorded vocals to an array of technoid sounds and effects. Then back to groovy, swinging beats reminiscent of a balmy summer evening on the beach. Highly-regarded DJ Philip Bader presents his first studio album for Highgrade Records. The title of the album, Wishful Thinking, already expresses one of Bader's central desires: "I've tried to combine many styles, and also to bring in emotional elements to electronic music." With this album, he aims to leave behind any apparent restrictive boundaries and to simply let go creatively... wishful thinking? Not at all. Wishful Thinking plays with conventional stylistic expectations, mixing what at first seem to be incompatible genres into a diverse and exciting album. The excitement within Wishful Thinking is generated not least through the range of new and unexpected collaborations present on the album, for example, jazz singer Anna Luca, with her soulful voice shining through on the track "Shine On Us," as well as other guests Ja Hier and Spoony Talker. For the tracks "Sunshine" and "Wishful Thinking," we are treated to a voice never before professionally recorded, Bader's best friend's girlfriend. Wishful Thinking cannot be put into any one category, switching skillfully between electronic sounds, jazzy tones, and house rhythms, while other musical influences make themselves evident in the background. Nevertheless, the album exists as a harmonious whole that loses none of its power or originality through its creative diversity.
