"Gary Boyle formed the jazz-rock band, Isotope, in 1973, recruiting three other stalwarts from the jazz field; Nigel Morris, Brian Miller & Jeff Clyne (ex Nucleus). Gary and Nigel had previously been part of Stomu Yamash'ta's band, East Wind. Prior to that, Gary had worked with Dusty Springfield, Brian Auger & Julie Driscoll. Isotope released three albums during the mid '70s, which gained wide acclaim and favourable comparisons with John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra. Following the demise of Isotope, Gary Boyle pursued a solo career and his debut album, The Dancer, won the 1978 Montreux Jazz/Pop Award. This compilation is comprised of an Isotope BBC concert and an Old Grey Whistle Test show, plus a Gary Boyle session recorded for John Peel. None of these recordings have ever been released before. "This double CD of Pentangle's BBC recordings is comprised primarily of rare and previously unheard tracks. From 1968 to 1973, Pentangle were prolific session guests on BBC radio, their unique fusion of sounds providing access to programmes covering folk, pop and progressive rock. When BBC cupboards were trawled for these recordings in the early '90s, they were almost bare -- a mere handful of tracks survived in the tape archive (released on the Band Of Joy/Strange Fruit labels). More recently, however, a further twelve tracks, in pristine sound, were discovered buried deep in the BBC archives. Another two dozen then surfaced in a private collection -- recorded off-air, with a remarkably clear signal, from original AM. "This is a live session recorded for the BBC at London's Paris Theatre on March 11, 1971. John Peel introduced the concert as being by 'Soft Machine and Heavy Friends.' This is a unique recording in that, for this BBC session, the band augmented and fragmented and performed with other great jazz musicians, including Ronnie Scott on tenor sax. It actually begins with the Elton Dean Group (which a year later evolved into 'Just Us') -- Dean, Mark Charig, Neville Whitehead and Phil Howard -- plus Mike Ratledge on electric piano. Then Dean, Ratledge and Howard are joined by Hugh Hopper and Robert Wyatt. The 30-minute plus medley is by the regular Dean-Ratledge-Hopper-Wyatt quartet. For the last three numbers within the medley, Soft Machine is augmented by Ronnie Scott on tenor sax, Mark Charig on cornet, Paul Nieman on trombone and Roy Babbington on bass. A very strong performance that features some of the most jazz-oriented music Soft Machine ever produced. The final track is a previously-unreleased recording of 'Slightly All The Time/Noisette,' which was performed by the Soft Machine quartet as an encore to this concert. The accompanying 12-page color booklet includes brief notes from Robert Wyatt, Hugh Hopper and Elton Dean, who all recall their own memories of this recording. Also featured in the booklet are further extensive liner notes and band photographs."

2005 release. "This live BBC concert was recorded at London's Paris Theatre on July 20,1972, just a few months before the live and studio material for band's album Six was put together. The Six album is widely regarded as a great record, but as the critic Duncan Heining says in his liner notes to Softstage, this CD is actually even better. This concert was the fifth by this incarnation of Soft Machine, with Karl Jenkins joining Mike Ratledge, Hugh Hopper and John Marshall, adding his considerable skills on woodwinds and keyboards, not to mention his talents as composer. This performance also showcases the exceptional Hopper-Marshall rhythm section. 'Slightly All The Time,' from the pre-Fifth days, is almost unrecognizable. The rest of the set is a mixture of compositions, mostly bearing only minor resemblance to the originals, from Fifth and Six album. Although only weeks into its existence, this line-up of Soft Machine was already a very solid unit, as this performance testifies. "There can be little more exciting or rewarding than listening to a band playing live and firing on all cylinders at the absolute peak of its powers, and the live performances presented here by Nucleus are no exception. They capture the group in arguably its finest incarnation right at the start of its long career, exhibiting a staggeringly high level of musical discipline matched by an equally impressive ability to improvise and solo. Nucleus began its long jazz-rock journey in 1969, when it was originally formed by trumpeter Ian Carr. They attracted a following after a successful performance at the Montreux International Festival in 1970, which led to the offer of a recording contract with Vertigo, and the release of several acclaimed albums. The performances on this CD were recorded live in Europe in 1970 & 1971 and draw on material that was to be found on the band's first two LPs, Elastic Rock & We'll Talk About It Later. At the time, Elastic Rock attracted comparisons with Miles Davis' work of the period such as In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew, which incorporated rock influences, but the Nucleus album was actually recorded ahead of these works and Carr has always been keen to distance the band from these comparisons. Ultimately, Elastic Rock had elements more in common with Brit avant-garde rockers like the Soft Machine and the Pink Floyd than it did with jazz, even if rock remained the less dominant force in the band's overall approach. Nucleus are still winning new fans today. Their track 'Song for the Bearded Lady' (included here) was featured on a 3CD compilation of Vertigo acts. Mojo magazine revealed: 'the punkoid guitar gun for hire Chris Spedding and UK jazzers led by Ian Carr wig out on this piece of swing 1970 proto punk.' The accompanying full-color 12-page CD booklet includes rare group photographs and extensive liner notes, including interviews with the band members."

"Bridget St. John was one of the first acts to be signed to John Peel's Dandelion Records label, in 1969. Bridget went on to record 3 albums for Dandelion (one of which was produced and scored by Pink Floyd collaborator, Ron Geesin). Bridget also contributed some vocals for Kevin Ayers' Shooting At The Moon album. In 1974, Bridget signed to Chrysalis Records and released her 4th album, Jumblequeen. This was a great folk-rock album, produced by Leo Lyons of the band Ten Years After. The album includes support from excellent musicians including the folk guitarist Stefan Grossman, Chick Churchill (Ten Years After) and Mike Giles (King Crimson). It also features harmony vocals from Beverley Martin. This CD is now reissued in agreement with Bridget St. John, and it includes three previously-unreleased bonus tracks, recorded in 1975: 'Bumper To Bumper' features Famous Jug Band guitarist Pete Berryman and 'Grow' has Ron Geesin on piano. This special digipack format has an accompanying CD booklet which includes full lyrics to every track, extensive liner notes, period photographs & reproductions of the original LP sleeves."

"Robert Wyatt formed Matching Mole in 1972, shortly after he left Soft Machine and just before launching his solo career. Matching Mole bore some similarities to his later work with Soft Machine. In fact, Wyatt came up with the name 'Matching Mole' as a subtle pun on the French translation of 'Soft Machine' -- 'machine molle.' Matching Mole released two great albums in 1972, before Wyatt disbanded the group and set out as a solo artist. But it is this Hux compilation which Wyatt now describes as the definitive Matching Mole album. On The Radio is a compilation of rare BBC recordings, including 3 John Peel studio sessions and a live concert. "The Incredible String Band was arguably one of the most engaging groups to emerge from the esoteric 1960s. Basically the duo of Mike Heron and Robin Williamson, their sound was comprised of haunting Celtic folk melodies augmented by a variety of Middle Eastern and Asian instruments. In the late '60s, the ISB became major players on the burgeoning underground scene, sharing bills with the likes of Pink Floyd at London's UFO club and acquiring cult status with the cognoscenti after the 1967 release of their album, 5,000 Spirits Or The Layers Of The Onion. John Peel soon became a big fan and was quick to get them to record sessions for his BBC Radio 1 shows. The Incredible String Band adopted an adventurous approach to their BBC radio sessions, using them to try out new, non-album material or radically rearrange older songs, encompassing a remarkable variety of instrumentation and genres. 2007 reissue. "Many music fans will know Peter Ivers as the writer of 'In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)', which he originally composed for David Lynch's classic film, Eraserhead. The song was later immortalized, of course, by fellow Bostonians, The Pixies. Ivers may not be a household name, but during his short life, he made an impact on many fronts. He was a musician, arranger, composer, screenwriter, catalyst, TV presenter, spotter of new talent, a black belt in karate and a yoga master. Talking to people who knew and worked with him even 24 years after his untimely death, the superlatives still come gushing forth: such epithets as 'perfect'; 'a totally unique and refreshing individual'; 'a legend in the making'; 'a genius in many fields' freely trip off the tongue about him. Peter's first big music industry break came in 1969, when Epic Records signed him to record his debut solo LP, Knight of the Blue Communion, the first ever legitimate CD reissue, released on Hux Records. In addition to playing harmonica and providing backing vocals, Peter acted as arranger and composer, while his friend Tim Mayer provided all the lyrics. Ivers assembled a fascinating group of musicians to play on his record. On drums was Cleve Frank Pozar, with Richard Youngstein on contrabass, and Tony Ackerman on guitar. The horn section featured Steve Kowarsky on bassoon, Henry Schuman on oboe and Paul Balmuth on sax. However, the icing on the cake was chanteuse Yolande Bavan, and the way in which Peter used her as lead vocalist on the album. Bavan was a singer and actress who was born in Sri Lanka and had started her professional career working as a vocalist with renowned pianist Graeme Bell. Later, she met and was befriended by the legendary singer Billie Holiday. Holiday took the young Bavan under her wing and in addition to mentoring Yolande, developed a close friendship with her. Subsequently, Yolande found her way to America where she replaced Annie Ross in the renowned jazz vocal trio, Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. On its original release in 1969, Knight of the Blue Communion drew comparisons with Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa, with Yolanda appearing to be the conventional vocalist cast in what was often a sea of avant-garde madness, the music a blend of blues, rock & jazz. The LP was produced by the veteran US pop producer Sandy Linzer, who had written and produced the hit 'Let's Hang On To What We Got.' Yolande left the band the following year and was replaced by Asha Puthli, a forward thinking, boundary breaking vocalist who'd trained in Indian classical singing and was a natural jazz improviser, whom the New York Times described as 'a sound like raga meeting Aretha Franklin.' With Asha now on vocals, the Peter Ivers Band released their debut single in 1971, a cover of the Marvin Gaye number, 'Ain't That Peculiar,' backed by the Ivers' original, 'Clarence O'Day.' Both titles, previously unavailable on CD, are included here as bonus tracks. As Puthli recalls, the single 'received glowing reviews from all three major industry magazines, Billboard, Cashbox & Record World and briefly entered the Top 100 Singles Billboard charts.' Asha Puthli went on to sing on Ornette Coleman's Science Fiction album and won Downbeat poll award for best female jazz vocalist for her sterling contribution to that classic album. This special 'digi-pack' format features a reproduction of the original LP sleeve. The accompanying 20 page CD booklet features extensive liner notes, including interviews with the featured singers and musicians, along with the original LP liner note by Peter Ivers, full lyrics to every track and rare photos."

"Formerly Fat Harry are one the forgotten greats of late '60s British rock. The band was formed in London in 1969 by ex-Country Joe & the Fish bassist Bruce Barthol and two old friends from the Berkeley, California folk music scene, Gary Petersen and Phil Greenberg. Fat Harry was soon signed up by the original Pink Floyd management company. Playing a highly idiosyncratic brand of Americana that frequently experimented with jazz time signatures, the band played at two of the now-legendary free concerts in Hyde Park, the 1970 Bath Festival, Phun City and many of the clubs of the era such as The Marquee in London. A quartet of 'musician's musicians,' admired by everyone from Ralph McTell to Edgar Broughton and Michael Chapman, the group made only one LP for Harvest Records before disbanding in 1972. Though reflecting their musical and songwriting abilities, that record failed to capture their true flavor. "Brothers Robin & Barry Dransfield joined together to form the British folk band the Dransfields in 1969. Into the early 1970s, British folk-rock was the buzz word among record labels, but out in the folk clubs, the kings of the castle were this hot-headed acoustic brother duo from Yorkshire -- blessed in uncanny harmonizing like the Everlys and any number of bluegrass siblings out West, but virtually alone in the art on the British folk scene. Turning down an offer to join the founding line-up of Steeleye Span, the brothers toured for several years as a duo, their shows including performances with Tom Paxton, Ewan MacColl, Martin Carthy, and the Watersons. The brothers eventually went their separate ways and Robin released his one and only solo LP, Tidewave, in 1980. Tricks Of The Senses is a double CD compilation of unreleased or rare Incredible String Band material from the Witchseason and Island Records archives, and represents a fascinating alternative history of the band. ISB's Robin Williamson and Mike Heron were fully involved in this project from the start, and were both impressed by the quality of the material that was unearthed. The opening track here, Leadbelly's 'Relax Your Mind,' is taken from the band's own 1966 rehearsal tape, and is the source of the earliest surviving two-man ISB material. 'Lover Man' (with Danny Thompson on string bass) is an unreleased song from the band's second album, 5,000 Spirits. 'All Too Much For Me' & 'The Iron Stone' are outtakes from the band's Wee Tam LP. The remainder of disc 1 features previously unreleased recordings from a 1968 US radio session. The second CD starts with 'Penwern,' an instrumental which was not used for the 1969 Be Glad film soundtrack for which it was originally recorded. 'El Ratto' & 'Long Long Road' are both previously unreleased recordings from the ISB's 1970 song & dance extravaganza, U, which was performed at London's Roundhouse Theatre. 'All Writ Down' is an alternative stereo version, featuring an additional verse. 'Queen Juanita' is a rare outtake from the band's I Looked Up album issued only on a long-deleted 1976 compilation. 'Poetry Play # 1' is a previously unreleased 1971 recording. The final two tracks are outtakes from the Earthspan sessions, recorded in 1972. Based in Dublin, the Strangelys were friends and contemporaries of the Incredible String Band, whose producer Joe Boyd signed them to his Witchseason management and production company in 1969. "Davy Graham was one of the most innovative guitarists of the 1960s and, with his eclectic mixture of folk, blues and jazz, was considered to be the catalyst of the British folk scene. His legendary Angi single was released in 1962 and would prove hugely influential on a generation of British guitar heroes. But Britain was still in the pre-Beatles world of 'Light Entertainment' and Davy Graham, ahead of his time, couldn't get arrested. So closet guitar buff and radio/TV star Bob Monkhouse stepped in and funded a demo acetate which resulted in Davy's first album deal. Now restored from a sole surviving copy, those tracks are heard here for the first time, along with a folk club set recorded in stereo from Davy's 'wilderness years' in the early '70s. "Bridget St. John was one of the first acts to be signed to John Peel's Dandelion Record label in 1969. She recorded 3 albums there before she was signed to Chrysalis Records in 1974. Throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, Bridget made many unique recordings for BBC Radio, mostly for John Peel. None of those recordings have ever been released on CD until now. Compiled by Bridget herself, this set features the best of her BBC radio concerts and sessions, including her very first Peel session, recorded in 1968. Several of these songs are released here for the first time. This double disc release is packaged in a lavish full colour digipak with an accompanying 20-page color booklet featuring extensive liner notes, an interview with Bridget, plus several rare photographs from Bridget's own archive. The tracks are a mixture of solo and band recordings, and three songs are duets with Kevin Ayers. "During the period spanning 1969-1972, Quintessence were one of Britain's most powerful and most popular live acts. Immediately after leaving Quintessence, vocalist Phil 'Shiva' Jones and guitarist Dave 'Maha Dev' Coddling had formed Kala. Beset by bizarre personnel issues, and in the hands of a record label which somehow found defeat in the jaws of what should have been a victory for all concerned, Kala nevertheless managed to release one overlooked gem of an album and a couple of blistering live tracks during its brief existence. The album features some titles which were in a similiar vein to Quintessence, with others nodding towards the popular boogie and country-rock of contemporaries like the Faces.
