Title: Elliott Smith
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: CD
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: KRS 246CD
Elliot Smith's second album, originally released in 1995. "...the songs of Elliott Smith explore the eternal theme of life on the skids with lots of little psychological and topographical details that have you sweating out there right on the streets with the desperate, depressed junkie protagonist. 'Needle in the Hay' (originally recorded with a trumpet solo by Eric Mathews-this had to go out when Elliott mixed the song down) had the feel of a bitter letter home: 'You ought to be proud that I'm getting good markssssssssss...' Three years later, in a 1998 interview, he reflected: ''Needle in the Hay' is, for me, the darkest one and it's a big 'fuck you' song to anybody and everybody.'"

Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: CD
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: KRS 269CD
Originally released in 1997. Elliott Smith's third album, featuring the song "Pictures Of Me." "Heart sewn firmly to his sleeve, Elliott continues his tuneful dissection of life & what makes it difficult." "Despite his typically self-effacing tone here, and the intentional little lo-fi touches, Either/Or has a clean, glossy, almost sultry sound that's extraordinarily intimate and has the effect of being casual and spontaneous."

Artist: STLS
Title: Drumcore
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: 7"
Price: $5.00
Catalog #: KRS 356EP
"STLS is two women performing drums, just drums. Lisa Schonberg (Explode into Colors, Kickball) and sts (The Haggard, Cadallaca) play standing up, facing each other, on two drum sets. Their sound is huge and their syncopations are rhythmically energizing and entrancing. Their drumming utilizes the tones and textures of the drums to play melodic patterns that recreate the dynamic structure of a typical pop song. The band was born out of an invitation by a friend to come to NYC and perform entirely percussion-based shows." On white vinyl.

Artist: KLEENEX/LILIPUT
Title: LiLiPUT
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: 2CD
Price: $17.50
Catalog #: KRS 373
2001 release, restocked. "One of the most sought-after, critically-acclaimed pieces of post-punk history. Out-of-print for almost a decade now, the complete works of Kleenex/LiLiPUT are now available once again. This legendary pre-'riot grrl' Swiss band thrived in the glory days of post-punk (late '70's/early '80's), releasing a slew of singles and two albums (expensive collectors' items now) through Rough Trade. They made a splash across Europe with the wild, funny, almost child-like way they played, wrote and sang. Their records made the English charts and the media had great interest in what they dubbed 'the new Slits'. Kleenex/LiLiPUT have toured with with the Raincoats, Swell Maps, Spizz Energi, Subway Sect, Scritti Pollitti and Red Krayola among others. Not surprisingly, they are ranked as not only one of the most influential female bands of the era but one of the finest bands of the time, period. Adorned with original band photos and new liner notes from guitarist Marlene Marder, noted writer Greil Marcus and Kim Gordon this double-CD is sure to become majorly sought-after."

Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: LP
Price: $15.50

Artist: ESSENTIAL LOGIC
Title: Fanfare In The Garden
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: 2CD
Price: $17.50
Catalog #: KRS 399CD
2003 release. "Essential Logic's old and new music is fresh, complex, and irresistible. Indirectly, via the legacy of the post-punk indie scene and particularly the role women took for themselves in it, Lora and her band/brand name changed the world. If you've never heard this incredible group, you have definitely been hearing echoes (Bjork springs to mind, unavoidably, but so do the new no-wavers of New York) for the past twenty years. And now you get the real thing."

Artist: DELTA 5
Title: Singles & Sessions 1979-81
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: KRS 415CD
2006 release. "Part of the Leeds/UK art/music scene in the late 70s that launched The Gang of Four and The Mekons, Delta 5 was signed to Rough Trade after only a few months in existence, and released their first single recording, Mind Your Own Business/Now That You've Gone in 1979. No less an authority than legendary BBC host and producer John Peel received an advance copy of the single and played it twice that same night. He then requested that the band do a 'Sessions' gig for him and the band was officially on its way. Relentless gigging with The Gang of Four, Echo and the Bunnymen, B52s, Specials, Teardrop Explodes, and U2 put the band on the map worldwide. They continued touring and recording until various members departed in late 1981, when they recorded one last single and then broke up for good in 1982."

Artist: SMITH, ELLIOTT
Title: New Moon
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: 2CD
Price: $19.50
Catalog #: KRS 455CD
2007 release. "Arguably the most gifted song-writer of his generation, Elliott Smith produced a large body of work that includes five solo albums, as well as From a Basement on the Hill (2004), a collection of songs completed before his death in 2003. New Moon contains 24 songs recorded between 1994-1997, a prolific time in Smith's career, when he recorded his self-titled album and Either/Or (both also released by Kill Rock Stars). Like his other work, New Moon reflects the power of Smith's ability to integrate rich, melodic music with poetic, multi-layered lyrics. Only three songs have seen prior release -- all on compilations -- most extremely limited runs. The final mixing for New Moon was done by Larry Crane, who is also the archivist for the estate of Elliott Smith. A significant portion of proceeds from the album sales will go directly to Outside In, a Portland-based social service organization dedicated to providing diverse services for homeless youth and low-income adults."

Artist: XIU XIU
Title: Dear God, I Hate Myself
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: KRS 503CD
"The two biggest constants throughout Xiu Xiu's catalog are honesty and evolution. This remains true with Dear God, I Hate Myself, as it delivers a look at responsibility, fear, healing, and societal roles wrapped in rich gothic pop music. The sound is still distinctly Xiu Xiu, but Jamie Stewart's vocals are finally effortless paired with vibrant melodies full of subtlety and the distinct sonic accents expected of this anticipated Xiu Xiu release. The result is a record that proves that art can be pop and pop can challenge you to look inside yourself. Stewart is joined by new full-time band member Angela Seo on piano, synth, and drum programming; with production handled by Jamie and Deerhoof's Greg Saunier. Together they've crafted a fully-grown sound for Dear God, I Hate Myself with elements from goth and pop that are expertly performed by a crop of brilliant musicians."

"Quasi (Sam Coomes, Janet Weiss, Joanna Bome) has been rocking the sticky-floored, graffiti-scrawled dimly lit trenches since '93, & American Gong is their eighth album. It will be released on their new label, Kill Rock Stars. What's been learned in these long years? Get off your ass, kick out the jams, lay it on the line, & communal mind meld is within reach. Artist: PANTHER
Title: Entropy
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: KRS 513EP
"Panther is back with Entropy, a 12" of new material from the prolific Portland originators of 'floor dancing.' This vinyl gem features more of the jerking rhythms and catchy hooks Panther fans remember from their 2008 full-length on KRS, 14kt God, but these new songs move in a Pinback-y way towards more piano-driven than guitar-driven melodies. Charles Salas-Humara and Joe Kelly create a lot of layers for a duo, building songs that allow Charlie's vocals to float ethereally into other realms, while firmly moored by Joe's solid drums."

Artist: KLEENEX/LILIPUT
Title: Live Recordings, TV-Clips & Roadmovie
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: CD+DVD
Price: $17.50
Catalog #: KRS 514CD
"If you've watched any live YouTube footage of Kleenex/Liliput then you know how amazing they were as a live band. This two CD/DVD set is a testament to their greatness. Featuring Kleenex live in Biel in 1979 and Liliput live in Zurich in 1983, the CD includes some never before released songs and the sounds of a world-class band in their prime. The DVD is the much rumored-about document of their European tour in 1982, mostly shot in Super 8mm and featuring their music."

Artist: RAINCOATS, THE
Title: The Raincoats
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: LP
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: KRS 515LP
"We all love our secret bands. Kurt Cobain came across a Raincoats album, and found there a bunch of soul mates whose honest emotions affected him so much that he tracked down founding member Ana da Silva somewhere in Notting Hill, persuaded DGC (Nirvana's record label) to re-issue The Raincoats back catalogue and encouraged the band to re-form. In 1977 da Silva and Gina Birch, inspired by the example of the Pistols and the Clash, of course, but also by the women of the Slits and X-Ray Spex, had responded to punk's DIY call to arms and eventually persuaded the Slit's drummer Palmolive to join their ranks. With the addition of the classically trained violinist Vicky Aspinall, The Raincoats were an all female band who owed nothing to male fantasy outfits like The Runaways, and produced a primeval punk-folk sound on original songs like 'Fairytale in the Supermarket' and 'In Love or deconstructing the Kinks' 'Lola' with cheek, fun and a pinch of salt."

Artist: STERN, MARNIE
Title: Marnie Stern
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: KRS 516CD
"Marnie Stern the album mirrors Marnie Stern, the woman. Birthed during a challenging period in her life, the self-titled Marnie Stern is a compendium of life stories both bitter and sweet. From ballads to her signature pop guitar-tapping style, Stern and long-time co-conspirator Zach Hill (Hella) have churned out (for lack of a better word) an enormous album that will further cement Stern as a rising star in today's progressive music landscape. Stern also enlists the bass talents of psych-rock Canadian musician Matthew Flegel (of the band Women) and up-and-coming mixer Lars Stalfors (Mars Volta, Funeral Party) resulting in Stern stepping up her sonic game and revealing a mature and more focused side of herself."

Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: 7"
Price: $5.00
Catalog #: KRS 517EP
"Delta 5 were part of the thriving Leeds post-punk scene in the late 1970s. This 7" features the band's debut single, Mind Your Own Business, first released in 1979, backed with a remix by post-punk hero Peter Hook, best known as the bass player for Joy Division and New Order, under the name Man Ray. 'With their unusual, dub-heavy rhythmic section and acerbic stagger of triple female vocals, Delta 5 articulated a variety of textures and approaches to song structure.' - Pitchfork"

Artist: HORSE FEATHERS
Title: Thistled Spring
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: KRS 518CD
"Horse Feathers' third album, and second on Kill Rock Stars, Thistled Spring displays a rich progression, more textured and lush than the band's previous two albums. It also captures the skillful interplay of the band's touring lineup of Justin Ringle (on vocals and guitar), violinist Nathan Crockett, cellist Catherine Odell, and multi-instrumentalist Sam Cooper. Lyrically, Ringle continues to explore broken relationships, longing, and pain, but this album has an undercurrent of heat that translates to a thawing of frozen hearts, and music which rushes like spring torrents, all of which points to a resurgence of life after a hard winter."

Title: Personal Life
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: CD
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: KRS 519CD
"Over the course of seven years and four LPs, The Thermals have tackled religion, politics, and death with no small amount of passion and fervor. With their fifth LP, The Thermals have battled (and perhaps even conquered!) the deepest and darkest of all popular art themes -- love. Not that The Thermals haven't sung/spoken/screamed about the wide range of emotions love produces and abuses. But never before have The Thermals devoted an entire LP to love, loss, and lies! More than an album strictly about love, Personal Life is about relationships. It's about the concept of a connection between two people -- making it, breaking it, and faking it. Personal Life amounts to the indie rock equivalent of a brilliant but ultimately doomed love affair. A beautiful, turbulent experience that will hopefully leave you wiser in the ways of love and life. Personal Life is something of a retro-technical achievement. Producer Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie, Tegan and Sara) recorded The Thermals the same way in which he produced their 2004 LP Fuckin' A. The band was recorded live (for the most part) to tape, and the album was mixed to tape as well. The sonic care Walla gave to Personal Life assures an enjoyable listen for audiophiles (the vinyl was mastered straight from tape) as well as for the rest of us who don't care and will be listening on shitty headphones and Radio Shack speakers."

Title: 1,000 Years
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: CD
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: KRS 520CD
"The new record began with the same surprise turn that started Corin Tucker's career back in 1991, ended Sleater-Kinney's 11-year year run in 2006 and inspired the punk-feminist rocker to redefine herself as a stay-at-home mom. It was early 2009, and Tucker was performing at a benefit show in her hometown of Portland, OR airing out a couple of new songs. Another benefit -- and another pair of unheard tunes -- followed a few weeks later. The reaction from friends, fans and perfect strangers was unanimous. 'Everyone was saying, 'Oh, it'd be cool if you made a record,' Tucker recalls. 'So I thought, Yeah! I should!' Cue the wrenching rhythms and hard-angle melodies, the slashing guitars and wildly passionate vocals. Only now the hard edges come nestled in lush weaves of acoustic guitars, keyboards, interlocking percussion, even cellos and violins, which places 1,000 Years deep into Tucker's creative headwaters -- another addition to her 20-year catalogue of restless songs for restless spirits."

Title: Baby Ouh!
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: KRS 521CD
"The name: Baby Ouh!. The look: 'hysterical glamour.' The sound: playful, experimental. The Lyrics: R'nʼR': Romantic and Rebellious. Stereo Total recorded a total of 40 songs for this album. So as not to strain your nerves too far, only 17 will appear on the album. Also included are a few cover versions of Stereo Totalʼs idols (e.g. Brigitte Fontaine from France and Pedro Almodóvar from Spain). Lyrics that are anarchistic, lewd, poetic in an overwrought way, sometimes very sad and sometimes very silly; accompanied by music that is played with flea market instruments, recorded on to cassettes, and with its lo-fi attitude, generally regards the penultimate technical developments as the best."

"Kill Rock Stars is proud to re-issue Roman Candle, Elliott Smith's first solo album, originally released on Portland's Cavity Search Records in 1994. Roman Candle is now remastered for the re-release by Roger Seibel (SAE) and Larry Crane, editor of Tape Op Magazine and archivist for Elliott's family. Roman Candle had quite an impact on Slim Moon, Kill Rock Stars' founder: 'In 1994, I had been asked to be on this five-person solo-act tour called Pop Chord with Tammy Watson, Carrie Akre, Sean Croghan and Elliott Smith. The first night at the Crocodile in Seattle, I didn't pay too much attention and people talked all thru Elliott's set. Sean Croghan got up next and said 'all of you people who just talked through Elliott's set are bummed because you just missed something very, very special.' The next night of the tour, at The Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco, I listened very closely to Elliott's set, and it was basically one of those lifechanging moments. Instead of watching the rest of the performers, I went out to the tour van and popped Roman Candle into the player, and listened to it on endless repeat for the rest of the evening and beyond. It completely blew my mind. I have never heard music as heartwrenchingly, gut-checkingly honest, intimate, and wise - before or since.'"

Title: From A Basement On The Hill
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: 2LP
Price: $20.50
Catalog #: KRS 524-180LP
Gatefold 2LP version on 180 gram vinyl. "Elliott Smith has been a patron saint of the indie scene since his days helming Portland heroes Heatmiser. As a solo artist, Smith led a revolution of home four-trackers, from Beck to Cat Power, out of the bedroom and into the studio, where Smithʼs fondness for Beatlesque melody led to some of the most beautifully orchestrated pop of the last decade. From A Basement On The Hill is Smithʼs final recording and finds Smith returning to an edgier, guitar-driven sound, alongside his trademark heart-rending balladry. From A Basement On The Hill was originally released on October 19, 2004 on ANTIRecords and is now proudly re-issued by Kill Rock Stars -- now home to all of Elliott's indie releases. "It's no secret The Cribs and The Thermals are good friends. The Thermals have supported The Cribs on two tours of the UK, and half of The Cribs now call Portland, The Thermals' hometown, their home as well. The amount of mutual respect and admiration the two bands have for each other is immense. And both bands are well-known and loved for their individual brands of loud, melodic rock. So it makes perfect sense that The Cribs and The Thermals team up for a split 7"."

The end result is the same, Green Cosmos is now created for you to listen to in the manner you watch a flower unfold."

Title: Past Time
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: LP
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: KRS 533LP
LP version. "Influenced by similarly all-female punk and post-punk acts like The Neo Boys and Kleenex, Grass Widow also note Roy Wood's The Move and The Kinks as a major source of inspiration. This can all be heard on Past Time along with the three-part harmonies, complex arrangements and odd chord progressions. Grass Widow is also influenced by a legacy of women who have paved the way through their music and politics. Their collaborative songwriting process, the fact that they don't have a front person and that they all equally contribute to the work of the band speaks to this philosophy. In addition, they take the opportunity as an all female band to bring attention to the roles of spectacle and spectator in their scene and make a conscious effort to play shows where women are involved."

Title: Thao & Mirah
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: CD
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: KRS 538CD
"Thao and Mirah both often go by their first names only. That is mostly why they wanted to make a record together. Other reasons include: they are friends, they were finally in San Francisco at the same time, and both joyfully welcomed a short departure from their respective successful solo careers to collaborate on a project. Thao and Mirah each wrote a new batch of beautiful songs which were jointly performed and produced by the three with some help from fine Bay Area friends. The album is a collection of songs from two distinctly different, highly respected songwriters, threaded and woven together with the creative energy and freedom of collaboration. Such freedom allowed for varied and rewarding levels of innovation, and a determination to keep the music-making as in-house as possible: both Thao and Mirah assume many of the instrumentation duties: from drums and bottles to slide guitar and knee caps. All songs maintain the writers' shared gifts: profound emotional poignancy with lyrics and melodies to match and stay with you."

Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: 7"
Price: $5.00
Catalog #: KRS 539EP
"Musically, 'Never Listen To Me' and its B-side 'There Is Always A Reason' find The Thermals treading new ground. Unlike the power-chord powered raucous sing-alongs for which The Thermals are famous, these songs are driven primarily by the rhythm section, with the guitar and vocals taking on a more subtle, subdued role. Like most Thermals songs, on the surface they appear quite simple. But these songs expand and collapse in new and exciting ways, and are a good indication of where The Thermals are heading."

Title: Tiny Hands
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: 7"
Price: $5.00
Catalog #: KRS 544EP
"Forbidden Friends is an exciting new project from Hutch Harris, his first new project since starting The Thermals eight years ago. But Forbidden Friends sound nothing like the brash, biting power-pop for which Harris and The Thermals are famous, except maybe the sweet nasal croon that is Harris' trademark vocal sound. 'Tiny Hands,' the first single from Forbidden Friends, is a fresh slice of minimal acoustic pop-rock, the likes of which we haven't heard since The Violent Femmes first LP dropped back in 1983. And like The Violent Femmes, though there are no loud amplifiers or distortion, and instruments are played rather than smashed, there is still an awesome high energy not unlike the best melodic punk rock. The songs are catchy and incredibly UP. You can dance to these songs, ah-oo. You can sing along with these songs, ah-ah-ah-oo. You may possibly fall in love to these songs, ah-oo! Ok."

Artist: BOATS
Title: Cannonballs, Cannonballs
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: CD
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: KRS 548CD
"Boats makes music songs in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Sometimes their songs are about fictional performing duos that have holes in their bodies and/or have a belief that they will one day give birth to a flock of birds. Sometimes they are about winning the Superbowl and finding buried treasure. Often they are about failure and death. A noisy indiepop band with high-end hopes but low-end equipment, Mat Klachefsky's bizarre vocal chords mixed with his infectiously catchy pop songs and boundless energy have been freaking out audiences ever since they released their critically acclaimed first album Intercontinental Champion to local audiences in October 2007. Since then they have embarked on several North American tours, played packed houses at SXSW, NXNE, Pop Montreal, Halifax Pop Explosion and Sled Island, and charted solidly all across Canada."

Artist: MILAGRES
Title: Glowing Mouth
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: CD
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: KRS 553CD
"The musical scope of the album is big and due to the piano-based melodies and soaring falsettos, early press has compared the band to artists as diverse as Grizzly Bear and Prince, demonstrating the wide breadth of Milagres' material. The first single, 'Glowing Mouth', is a slow-burner made for dancing close on a hot summer night, whereas 'Here To Stay' has a keyboard hook that won't let you sleep. Kyle Wilson has a knack for writing dreamy story songs that also pack a punch in both chorus and melody. Songs like 'Gentle Beast' and 'Gone' suck you in and then haunt you for days afterwards. Glowing Mouth is an album that stays with you."

Artist: FORBIDDEN FRIENDS
Title: Totally Low
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: 7"
Price: $5.00
Catalog #: KRS 554EP
"Forbidden Friends is the side-project of Hutch Harris from The Thermals. An almost-acoustic affair, the songs are at once modern and old-fashioned. The instrumentation is incredibly minimal - simple and effective. The lyrics are love stories sung from a hidden location - keep it underneath, in a place where only you and I know." Artist: GOSPEL MUSIC
Title: How To Get To Heaven From Jacksonville, FL
Label: KILL ROCK STARS
Format: LP
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: KRS 557LP
"The last time we heard from Gospel Music (Owen Holmes, bassist of Black Kids) on 2010's duettes EP, Owen Holmes was collaborating with members of the Magnetic Fields, Camera Obscura and other likeminded artists, creating a sound critics compared to Jonathan Richman, Silver Jews and the Vaselines. On How To Get To Heaven From Jacksonville, FL, he further develops his homespun lo-fi, layering toy piano, organ and banjo over jangly guitars, bouncy basslines and minimalist drums. His playful, conversational baritone sits squarely between that of David Berman and Lou Reed, while lots of syrupy female vocals, this time from his Jacksonville friend Madeline Long, provide the perfect foil." Includes free mp3 download.
