Artist: EARDRUM
Title: Last Night
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 007CD
"This long awaited debut album by Eardrum is comprised of ten percussion dominated rhythmic leviathans, the missing link between 23 Skidoo, Afrobeat, and Jon Hassell's Fourth World Project. Recorded live, the album applies the pioneering attitudes of Lee Perry, King Tubby, and Teo Macero. The studio becomes an instrument of manipulation, warping the musicians contributions and electrifying the groove, fusing African concepts of rhythm with dub and electronics. Eardrum are Lou Ciccotelli (Laika, Spleen, Mass, God, Ice) and Richard Olatunde Baker (Cath Coffey, NT, Akure Wall). They've previously had a single on Soul Static Sound and appeared on Macro Dub Infection II and the Leaf sampler CD Osmosis."

Artist: YOKOTA, SUSUMU
Title: Image 1983-1998
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BAY 009CD
Now mid-line price. "Yokota has been earning heaps of praise for his super-funky blend of house, techno, disco, jazz and breaks, with releases on Japan's Sublime Records, among others. The Leaf Label has licensed Image 1983-1998, a collection of mainly acoustic and oddly moving instrumental and vocal pieces from Yokota's own Skintone label for release outside Japan. It's a very personal project, representing a a very different side to his musical persona to the one you may already be aware of. Five of the tracks were recorded with guitars and organs in 1983-4, the remainder were inspired by those songs and were recorded in 1997-8. Yokota is proving increasingly difficult to pin down, which can only be a good thing as far as we're concerned. On this album you can hear the influences of Felt, Durutti Column, Jim O'Rourke, Mouse On Mars, Satie and Cluster tied together like a Fellini soundtrack, the tracks are mainly guitar, organ a bit of vocal utterances."

Artist: YOKOTA, SUSUMU
Title: Magic Thread
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $10.50
Catalog #: BAY 011CD
"Though probably better known for his funked-up techno and house (and jazz, disco, drum & bass, etc), Susumu Yokota received fulsome praise for the Image 1983-1998 album released by The Leaf Label in1999. Magic Thread was actually released in Japan before Image, in a limited edition of just 500 copies on CD -- the very first release on Yokota's own Skintone label. Magic Thread has a more electronic feel to it than Image, but is still possessed of the plaintive melodies and haunting minimalist dynamics that made Image such an unexpected treat. After Ken Ishii, Yokota was the first Japanese techno artist to release music in Europe. Since then he has enjoyed a prolific career as both a DJ and recording artist, working under a host of pseudonyms, including 246, Ringo, Prism and Stevia. With his star currently very much in the ascendant in his native Japan and continental Europe, Yokota has begun to make an impression in the UK with his two most recent albums on Sublime, 1998 and 1999.

Artist: ELLIS, ROB
Title: Music For The Home
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 015CD
"Ellis is best known for his collaborations with PJ Harvey (since her first album Dry and co-produced her new album), has recorded two albums as Spleen (Swarfinger) and is also part time member of Laika. The album started life as a piano solo album, gradually evolving into something more orchestrated, taking in music boxes and other wind instruments, as well as cello and classical guitar. Scott Walker has already sampled a track from the album and used it as a backing track on his contribution to the recent Ute Lemper album, and Brian Eno has given the album a personal endorsement."

Title: Grinning Cat
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: BAY 017CD
"Grinning Cat is the fourth album to be licensed by Leaf from Susumu Yokota's own Skintone label in Japan. It follows last year's splendid Sakura, currently the highest selling Leaf release ever. To date we have released the critically lauded Yokota albums Image 1983-1998, Magic Thread and Sakura, as well as the Mix remix 12". But it's not all one-way traffic with Yokota 's appreciation of The Leaf Label resulting in the recent Leaf Compilation CD on Skintone."

Artist: EARDRUM
Title: Side Effects
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 018CD
"Eardrum's second album, Side Effects, is a testament to the methods of improvisation, Afro beat free jazz, musique concrete and carnival street music as well as the insularity of studio manipulatio. lnspiration comes from Miles Davis, Lee Perry, Fela Kuti, the limitless influence of African music and the aural chaos of London life. Side Effects evokes cinematic imagery, sparked from dark urban and untamed rural counterpoints using talking drums, tone drums, varied effects, and computer programming. Musical textures are in continual flow, a sense of motor drive and movement creating a sensation akin to road hypnosis. Harnessing the talents of diverse musicians from distinct disciplines, Side Effects is the link between the ambient rhythm-scape of Last Light and the dynamic, unpredictable energy of Eardrum's live performances"

Title: The Boy and the Tree
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: BAY 025CD
2002 release. "There is an island called Yakushima in the south of Japan, which is designated as a world heritage site. It rains a lot there and there are many trees that are two or three thousand years old. It is a very mysterious island. Also, there is an animation film called Mononokehime directed by Hayao Miyazki. The scenario, nature itself, is the living thing and this film has sharp animal sensibilities. These two things have effected this album very much. I also moved to the suburbs of Tokyo two years ago, and live in a place which is closer to the mountains and river. I go to the mountains a few times a week and this atmosphere is reflected in my music. The smell of grass and trees, the air in the woods makes my mind clear. And it gives good effect for making music. Walking among the big trees, I can hear my heartbeat and also the sound of the earth echo."

Title: Music For The Home Vol. 2
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 029CD
"Three years after the first volume of Music For The Home, Rob Ellis returns with a new, intensely personal solo album which opens a treasure chest of archive recordings from the last decade, documenting a turbulent period in his domestic life. Where volume one was created and edited almost entirely inside a computer, this album includes many piano pieces recorded live. A self-taught pianist, Ellis's idiosyncratic approach to composition has drawn comparisons to Messaien, Reich and Cage, among others. The album also utilizes domestic recordings and concrète techniques, notably on 'Church Opposite,' which uses the sounds of church bells to

Artist: MURCOF
Title: Utopia
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BAY 038CD
"Since the release of Martes, Murcof's debut album, Corona has progressed into film soundtracks, recently finishing work for the producers of one of the biggest Mexican films of all time, Amores Perros. He has been commissioned to remix both Kronos Quartet and Miles Davis; will continue to tour extensively in Europe, Japan and North America; and has been nominated for the prestigious Ars Electronica award."

Artist: EFTERKLANG
Title: Tripper
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BAY 040CD
"Copenhagen's Efterklang reach far beyond the expectations of a debut with their ambitious first album for The Leaf Label. The ten-member group's music whispers like thunder, combining glacial strings, febrile electronic rhythms, hushed male-female vocals (reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine) and a Greenlandic choir -- all joining together to a transcendent whole. Tripper was a year in the making, and it captures the intricate majesty of the best film soundtracks and most evocative classical works. Efterklang means 'reverberation' (literally, 'after noise'), but is loosely translated as 'remembrance.' Both definitions capture the band's effect; a strong sense of yearning lies at the heart of their work, while ghosts of aggression linger menacingly along the edges. Tripper breathes with sensations and subtleties and emotional depth, bringing to mind the music of Rachel's, Mum or Mogwai."

Artist: JAIN, ESSIE
Title: The Inbetween
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: BAY 066CD
"The Leaf Label is proud to present a special reissue of Essie Jain's stunning 2008 album, The Inbetween -- a high point for the songwriter that explores the nuances of intimacy as she never has before. The Inbetween's songs are direct and captivating in their honesty, and serve to reflect the artful beauty that can result from periods of clarity. After the release of 2007's We Made This Ourselves, Jain led her band around the country on tours before returning to New York and jumping back into writing and recording. Having solidified a fellow group of musicians, the British-born Jain drew from current challenges in her life. 'I was in this space where things weren't ready to take their next shape yet -- in some ways it was a really beautiful experience, because you can't force things and it nails you down, and in another, you can see the opening into the next chapter and you can't reach it,' she says. Music serves as a means towards making sense of a situation, and Jain chose to name her record The Inbetween in order to highlight the ephemeral nature of the issues she addresses. Recording with a larger group of musicians, Jain experimented with new ways of orchestrate songs. 'The record had a personality that came about and evolved of its own accord, whereas the first record had a tighter lid on it, because I needed it to be a more internal piece.' The Inbetween features an array of instruments -- French horn, clarinet, Rhodes, cello, trumpet -- but none are more central to the songs than Jain's vocals, which remain the strident and captivating centerpiece of each composition." Includes two bonus tracks.

Title: The Rhythm The Message
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $8.00
Catalog #: DOCK 018EP

Artist: EFTERKLANG
Title: Under Giant Trees
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: DOCK 046CD
"Copenhagen's Efterklang make a welcome return with a magical re-introduction to their sound -- the release of Under Giant Trees, a limited edition five-track mini-album in deluxe packaging. Recorded in the band's studio, Under Giant Trees evolved somewhat unconventionally. Returning to Copenhagen at the close of 2005, Efterklang's five core members set to work recording the foundations of these new songs, with a view to this stand-alone release. Extra vocals, brass and strings were added, with Edda and Hildur (from Icelandic quartet Amiina) recording further violin parts. Using musicians who had performed with the band on tour, the idea was to capture the songs as they had been played live, retaining the free spirit of their origin. These were uncharted waters for Efterklang, who usually create songs in the studio as they record. The results are mesmerizing -- at once vibrant, otherworldly, poignant and panoramic."

Artist: MANITOBA
Title: Give'r
Label: LEAF (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $7.00
Catalog #: DOCK 29CD
"This time last year, no one knew who the hell Dan Snaith was. But his debut album as Manitoba, Start Breaking My Heart, changed all that with a mother lode of critical bon mots and performances. Along with Susumu Yokota, Manitoba is the Leaf label's biggest success story. Having relocated from Toronto to London, it wouldn't be right unless Dan laid down the respect for the ol' sod. On the Give'r, he brings you the glorious 'Dundas, Ontario', a brand new Manitoba remix that kicks that folktronica tag into oblivion. Then there's two brand new tracks: 'Tits And Ass: The Great Canadian Weekend' -- a throbbing, clattering beast that falls away to unveil some of Dan's most beautiful keyboard melodies yet."
