Artist: DUUL_DRV/NIBO/VEND
Title: Clean
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 011CD
"Duul_Drv is S. Arden Hill, sound artist and painter, who explores the environment of miniature re-juxtaposition. His sound work combines various forms of processed audible texture, ranging from phonographic recordings to abstract and pop ambience. These textures are processed with lo-tech software, manifesting slow and organic compositions. Nibo is active in sound, design and visual art. Many of his works including his multi-media installation pieces focus on scientific or mathematical themes. Vend is Alex Peverett and Joe Gilmore. Over the past three years, they have have worked together under various project names. Vend was the result of a mutual interest in understated generative/algorithmic audio design. vend.clean consists entirely of sounds constructed using various forms of audio synthesis."

Artist: CHARTIER, RICHARD
Title: Set or Performance
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 018CD
"LINE is proud to present Set or Performance, the first live performance documentation of Richard Chartier." "My live performance differs perhaps most significantly from my recorded work by virtue of an increased audibility and activity. The sounds used are selected from a collection of pre-designed sounds, culled from past compositions and unreleased works but chosen with attention to the space and situation in which they will be presented as part of a new performative composition. In this sense, a live piece works to bring sounds into new and more immediately dynamic relations, creating a compositional outline within which a degree of space exists for immediate and on-site improvisational effects and reworkings." -- Richard Chartier.

Artist: TIETCHENS, ASMUS
Title: e-Menge
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 020CD
LINE is proud to present e-Menge the new installment of the 'Mengen' series from influential German electronic music pioneer Asmus Tietchens. LINE will be releasing the subsequent works in this series. Epsilon-Menge means Epsilon quantity. "The four pieces of this recording represent my aesthetic approach to space. Space not as in a 'spacey' or astronomic sense, but space as an extension of the three-dimensional region in which we exist. Caused by acoustic foregrounds and acoustic backgrounds, spaces of different capacities occur. In the early 20th century the fine arts began to abolished spatiality, I wish to restore it by sound." -- Asmus Tietchens, 2005. Asmus Tietchens' first released his unique electronic music in 1980, but created works since the late 1960s. Since then he has produced about 30 more cutting edge recordings on numerous international labels dealing with electronic sound and concrete music. Last copies...

Artist: VEND
Title: Wiel
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 021CD
"Line is proud to present Wiel, the first full length from the collaborative project Vend, by Joe Gilmore and Alex Peverett. Wiel is a selection of compositions focusing on a subtle, delicate use of acoustic and synthetic sound in both abstract and linear form. Shorter pieces of acoustic events flutter about the stereo field with almost accidental design and are related to Vend's use of playful rhythmic compositions. The two longer compositions, 'Wiel vii/2' and '-vi/2' take their form from the sonification of visually complex spiral patterns."

Artist: CHESSMACHINE
Title: Live In Los Angeles
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 023CD
"The collaborative performance project Chessmachine by Richard Chartier (US) and Ivan Pavlov (aka COH) (RUS). An unusual release for Line, Chessmachine's live sound is alternately loud and quiet, mysterious and genuinely unsettling. A certain humor shapes the conceptual dialectics of the Chessmachine live experience. Their interplay suggests the historical confrontation of East and West; an austere and chilling tete-a-tete over the chessboard that reconstructs the somber milieu of a bygone Europe, even as it conveys a kind of absurdist levity through the rehearsed performance of these roles. The use of MAC and PC computer operating systems by Chartier and Pavlov, respectively, becomes the late-20th century manifestation of classic Cold War combatants. Through their engagement, a process of sonic and aesthetic displacement unfolds, such that one player's strategic manipulation of sound begins slowly to affect and then determinatively shape the compositional technique of the other."

Artist: DOUBLENDS VERT
Title: Cistern
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 024CD
"Cistern was made in a two million gallon underground reservoir at Fort Worden, a de-commissioned military base overlooking the entrance to the Puget Sound. The space's resonance extended the instruments in a way similar to electronic processing. The acoustic properties of the cistern created new sonic relationships to which the group applied their musical concept. Cistern captures Doublends Vert's first experiences in the sound-world of the cistern. Doublends Vert formed in 2003 through a common interest in creating restrained, acoustic music exploring the timbre blending possibilities of the violin, accordion, and clarinet."

Title: Z-Menge
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 025CD
"The new installment of the continuing Mengen series from influential German electronic music pioneer Asmus Tietchens. Line will be releasing the subsequent works in this series. Zeta-Menge means Zeta quantity. 'Another approach to ultimate situations, nearly stillness before becoming silent as Samuel Beckett taught us. End Game. Microtones and structures are only the tools. The Night Of Lead revisited...' Asmus Tietchens first released his unique electronic music in 1980, but created works since the late 1960s. Since then he has produced over 37 full length solo works and more cutting edge recordings on numerous international labels dealing with electronic sound and concrete music. Some of his over 20 full length collaborative projects include the ongoing Kontakt der Junglinge with Thomas Koner. Tietchens' focus is the manipulation of found sound in ways suggested by the material itself. German label Die Stadt has begun to reissue his groundbreaking early works on CD in limited edition. His latest critically acclaimed project, a series based strictly on sine tones and white noise is the Mengen series released by Ritornell/Mille Plateaux (Alpha-, Beta- and Gamma-Menge)."

Artist: STEINBRUCHEL
Title: Stage
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 028CD
"Stage is Steinbrüchel's second full-length solo release on Line. The album contains 10 scenes that move between warm organic and melodic digitalised sounds and cold crystalline-like sparks. The sounds and compositions are even more detailed and have a more melodic approach then previous recordings by Steinbrüchel. Single isolated and stretched tones are structured together with smaller loops and particles of clicks and noises into dense atmospheres. Parts of the sounds used in several scenes are based on piano recordings by Bernd Schurer and/or guitar recordings by Tomas Korber. For the first time, Steinbrüchel has used and processed recordings of acoustical instruments to this extent in his compositions. Stage brings to life once again a collection of precise and carefully composed structures and textures, which are formed into different scenes where they all interweave with each other. All the tracks were composed in 2005 for the interactive dance performance HYBRIDOME, produced by Avventure in Elicoterro Prodotti -- Ariella Vidach AiEP. The tracks on the CD release are in a different order and are also structured differently than the actual still unfinished dance performance."

Artist: PHILLIPS, TOMAS
Title: Intermission/Six Feuilles
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 029CD
"This work was created out of the desire to wed acoustic and digital instrumentation in a particular compositional field, one that allows room for (a)tonal and silent gestures alike. Piano and koto are accompanied by the shifting texture of physically manipulated organic materials, in combination with minimal electronics whose function is to engage rather than to counter the non-digital elements. More than an homage to Morton Feldman, the title is a direct reference to his own series of 'Intermissions,' from which Intermission/Feuilles draws much of its decisiveness and inspiration. Tomas Phillips (b. 1969) is a composer, novelist and teacher whose sound work focuses on improv performance and minimalism through composition."

Artist: FRIEDL, HERIBERT
Title: trac[k]_t
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 031CD
"This is the final work in the series encompassing ataraxia, bradycard, trans~, and back forward that uses the cymbalon as source material. The process of working with this hammered stringed instrument for this series has been a 'discussion' between the instrument and myself, an exploration of traditional playing, digital processing, and mixtures of both. I feel that trac[k]_t should convey the scope of using an instrument without losing both its intrinsic nature of engagement as well as the sound of how it is played. Being a conceptual work, rather than a kind of 'tract,' the process of this recording has become a kind of instruction for myself to understand not only my work with this instrument in of itself but also its communion with digital processes. The work is to be continuation in sound from my previous works. While not a repetition of ideas and sounds, it has become more of a search for the essence of this instrument. The way of working with it to come to a satisfiable conclusion and summation. Heribert Friedl lives in Vienna where he studied sculpture at the University of Applied Arts. In his exhibitions he has been working with scents and its non visual phenomena -- sometimes in combination with sounds. He has had exhibitions, sound performances and projects in Hungary, Germany, England, Italy, USA, Cuba and Austria. Since 1998 he has worked solo and in collaboration with artists such as Bernhard Gunter, John Norman (Radian) and Dale Lloyd. In addition to the utilization of digital sounds and field recordings, Friedl been using sounds of cymbalon and zither in his most recent series of works. Friedl follows the kind of minimalist aesthetics that composes with few sounds, small events, and nearly imperceptible movements. Despite its seeming simplicity, Friedl's is a very delicate kind of music: each and every sound bears enormous significance and have to bear the responsibility for the whole work. After numerous mp3-releases and albums on such labels Trente Oiseaux (Germany) and and/OAR, he founded his label Nonvisualobjects with Raphael Moser in 2005. Nonvisualobjects releases works by renowned minimalist artists and composers Steve Roden, Richard Chartier, Roel Meelkop, Bernhard Gunter, among others."

Artist: DEUPREE/CHRISTOPHER WILLITS, TAYLOR
Title: Listening Garden
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 032CD
"The latest collaboration between artists Taylor Deupree (12k) and Christopher Willits (12k, Ghostly International). Often known for their skittering and melodic blend of guitar and synthesizer, Deupree and Willits are heard here creating 'ambient music' in one of its true definitions of spatial 'wallpaper' sound, although in Listening Garden's case, the walls are glass and sky. Listening Garden was originally developed as a sonic alteration of two quiet indoor/outdoor tea spaces installed at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media in Yamaguchi, Japan, in June of 2004. The audio installation was designed to heighten visitor's senses and alter the sonic space as they sat, read, or had quiet conversation amongst the trees. Taylor Deupree and Christopher Willits composed a number of short, randomly sequenced multi-channel soundworks using guitar and electronics. The fragments of sounds, while both gentle and subtly rich, are intentionally weathered, eroded and understated, generating a sonic bridge between the digital work of sound and the audiosphere of nature. The audio on this CD is built from location recordings taken in the garden over the course of a week during the exhibit. The environmental and incidental sounds played a large part of the physical work and are captured and utilized in the recording. Listening Garden is meant to enhance the experience of simply sitting and enjoying one's place in time. This CD is best heard in a similar situation and at a low background level. Headphones are not recommended."

Artist: BASINSKI + RICHARD CHARTIER, WILLIAM
Title: Untitled 1-3
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 034CD
"New updated and remastered version of William Basinski and Richard Chartier's universally acclaimed work Untitled 1-2. Originally released in 2004 on the noted Japanese label Spekk, the original edition of 1300 sold out within 2 months. This new version Untitled 1-3 includes two new works 'Untitled 3' and 'Untitled 3 (reprise)' and has been remastered with care by Taylor Deupree. 'Untitled 1' contains Chartier elements from 1991-1992 and Basinski elements from 2003 using the Voyetra 8. 'Untitled 2' contains Chartier elements from 2003 and Basinski tape loops from 1981 and 2001 using the Voyetra 8. 'Untitled 3/3(reprise)' contain Chartier elements from 1993 and the 2006 sound installation Mixing Desk commissioned for the Bleeding Edge Festival at the Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California and Basinski elements from 1997 using the Voyetra 8. 'Untitled 3' mixed by Basinski. 'Untitled 3(reprise)' mixed by Chartier. 'Richard and I became friends after meeting at Tonic in NY when he and Taylor Deupree did a show with Carsten Nicolai. He contacted me about a possible collaboration and sent me a track which I thought was very rich and harmonically similar to something I had recently been working on, a very swampy, dark piece I was calling The Garden of Brokenness after a very beautiful new installation by James Elaine. I popped it into pro tools with my piece and something really special was happening, so I spent a few weeks weeding my track, trying different things... eventually I stripped it way down and we were both quite happy with the result. Richard came up to NY and we fine tuned it a bit together and it was done. Since the piece had changed quite a bit we decided not to use that title for this piece. He then sent me another one and again, it just worked with something else I had been working on... the second track came together very quickly, and there you have it! I love Richard's work... very elegant, like the man!' --William Basinski."

Title: Further Materials
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 035CD
"Line is proud to release this collection of recordings from numerous international compilations from 2002-2005. This collection is a wide range of sound works from the ultra-minimal whispers of 'Composition09.01' to the subtle harmonics and musicality of 'How Things Change' to the loud violent distortion of 'Tempt' (a piece only performed a handful of times for noisy spaces -- for example, this one was in attempt to drown out Akufen's set filtering from an adjoining area). Many of these original compilations are out of print or hard to find editions and 'Untitled' makes its debut on CD from its original vinyl appearance. 'Specification.Eleven' and 'Specification.Fourteen' are both part of the continuing collaborative works with Taylor Deupree. This CD serves as a follow-up to 2002's Other Materials."

Artist: FELL, MARK
Title: Attack On Silence
Label: LINE
Format: DVD
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: LINE 037DVD
"Attack On Silence brings together a series of works by British artist Mark Fell, exploring the relationships between geometry, color, and waveform. These works have been shown around the world as performances, installations, and in print. For the past decade, Mark Fell has been one of the leading innovators in the fields of experimental electronic music and sound art. Combining interests in experimental music, contemporary art, computer technology and philosophy, his work has been performed and exhibited internationally to wide critical acclaim. Mark Fell is one half of SND. Sacred geometries, and their sonic equivalents, are said to mirror the micro and macroscopic structures of the physical world; the complex harmonies of the Tibetan singing bowl, like the patterns of the mandala, allow access to the deepest levels of the consciousness-inducing meditative states that transform the very being of their participants. In the modern reciprocals of these technologies, the shift is one of teleology. The sacred metals and antique art of the singing bowls give way to the magic of digital synthesis as sacred geometry gives proxy to psychophysiology and the cognitive neuroscience of brainwave entrainment. Drawn from these sources -- with mutual ambivalence -- and realized through a distinct aesthetic minimalism, intricate combinations of form, color and sound are projected through a series of transitions, sometimes gradual, sometimes abrupt, sometimes giving way to sustained tones and repetitions. In a process of ever-emerging horizon -- an attack on silence and a space for silence -- the potential arises to be ensconced or alienated, a space for enchantment, for anxiety, for profound boredom or for reverie. Are these phenomena affirmations or reconfigurations of the subject -- routes to an authentic, spiritual or otherwise -- or are they essentially physiological? Are they aesthetic distractions or intrusive technological interventions -- pointers to dystopian possibilities? Are we being enlightened? Examined? Entertained? Enmeshed? Recorded at The Music Research Centre at the University of York (UK) and SND studio Sheffield 2007 and 2008. Digital coding and mastering by Tez in NTSC. Audio presented in both stereo and 5.1 Surround option formats."

Title: Colorfield Variations
Label: LINE
Format: DVD
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: LINE 038DVD
"Colorfield Variations is a collection of audio/visual works reinterpreting the color field movement by an international array of critically acclaimed sound and new media artists and assembled by curator and sound artist Richard Chartier. Color field painting, an abstract style that emerged as a new direction in American painting in the 1950s following abstract expressionism, is characterized by canvases painted primarily with stripes, washes and fields of solid color. An alternate but less frequently encountered term for this style is chromatic abstraction. As the first critically acclaimed art movement to originate in the United States's capital, the Washington Color School was key to the larger color field movement. As a reaction to the emotional energy and gestural surfaces of abstract expressionists, the color field artists broke away from the individual mark in favor of pure color itself becoming the main content of the work. By breaking painting down to its formal and fundamental elements, the color field artists created pure, simplified, large-format, color-dominated fields on often monumental scale utilizing the full psychological power of color. Artists such as Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Helen Frankenthaler, Sam Gilliam, Larry Poons, Gene Davis, Jules Olitski and others eliminated recognizable imagery from their canvas and presented abstraction as an end in itself with each work being a cohesive image. The color field movement can be seen as a precursor to the themes and aesthetics of the subsequent minimalist movement. This program in its original form with special live audio/visual performances by Ernest Edmonds + Mark Fell and Sawako at the Corcoran Gallery of Art was commissioned by Washington Project for the Arts as part of the citywide ColorField.Remix events which took place in April-June 2007 in Washington, DC, celebrating The Washington Color School. Since its creation, Colorfield Variations continues to be screened internationally." Artists include Steve Roden, Alan Callander, Frank Bretschneider, Stephan Mathieu, Sue Costabile + Beequeen, Tez, Tina Frank + General Magic, Bas Van Koolwijz, Chris Carter + Cosey Fanni Tutti, Ryoichi Kurokawa, Sawako, Evelina Domnitch + Dmitry Gelfan and Ernest Edmonds + Mark Fell. Limited edition 1000. All region, NTSC format.

Artist: DE MEY, YVES
Title: Lichtung
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 039CD
"The sound work Lichtung is the original score for a dance solo by choreographers Antoine Effroy and Anne Rudelbach and performed by Catherine Jodoin. The performance premiered on March 26, 2008 at Kampnagel in Hamburg, Germany. The concept of the dance performance was to begin from a unique situation and sustain this physical state as long as possible. By adding unique and non-repetitive movements, the choreography slowly evolves, starting at the back of the stage and gradually moving towards the front, as if by zooming inward. The sound follows this evolution or curve, not necessarily in volume, but rather by changes in density and speed to accompany the performer's phrase changes. Lichtung was written and composed in Brussels, Belgium and Hamburg, Germany by Yves De Mey. Already at a very early age, Yves De Mey (born 1972) became interested in electronic and/or experimental music. After a few unsuccessful years in film school, he decided to turn his early interest into his profession and started working as sound engineer and sound designer. Very soon his work found its way into the field of contemporary theatre, dance and performance. Essential to De Mey's work is the dramaturgy of sound, often combined with research in change of perception through spatialized sound or music. His music has a strong focus on filmic qualities with the tendency to suggest a minimalist composition, allowing sounds to find their place and evolve over time. Every single bit of the composition organically changes throughout the layout by gentle analog and digital manipulation. In live situations, De Mey prefers to improvise, looking for happy accidents. Besides his performing arts activities, he's been releasing music on different labels, often in more accessible styles, but always based on a strong interest for non-conventional sounds. De Mey continues to work on a series of site-specific sound installations, investigating space and processes of technical and human decay. Yves De Mey often works together live or in studio with Christoph De Boeck/Audiostore and Peter Van Hoesen. He shared stage with such noted artists as Kaffe Matthews, Christian Fennesz, Alex Waterman, and Bo Wiget."

Artist: CURGENVEN, ROBERT
Title: Oltre
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 042CD
"The 'Transparence' dubplate, developed at O ' in Milan, Italy, works within the physical limitations of the vinyl medium, employing the object as sound source and also sound medium, to become an instrument in its own right. Using the non-linear acoustics of the gallery at O', the dubplate was recorded, and later cut to disc in Berlin, at very low volume. This ephemeral audio signal becomes present during playback only at high volume, which subsequently produces, by design, a unique physical response from the room, air and amplification - creating deep undertones and blossoming overtones via these manifold resonances; simultaneously, the action of the stylus gently abraids the soft vinyl surface, causing the dubplate's sound to gradually disappear and evolve, successively losing higher frequencies whilst acquiring new artifacts and crackle. Oltre documents this degradation and transformation over two months of live performances. The integrated system of subsonic feedback from ventilators, acoustically gated binaural microphones, modal micro-variations in guitar feedback, field-recordings from across remote areas of Australia and the live, physical interplay of the turntable, dubplate and stylus, combine to create a field which moves beyond the original recordings and their individual spaces. Working with harmonics and textures as articulated not only through instruments/objects, in space and place, but also in time and the dislocation of the remote, Robert Curgenven's sound explores shifting layers in the fabric of fields of perception, creating vast landscapes from carefully detailed recordings through to immersive resonances via deft manipulations of sound pressure. Employing only analogue means, in a variety of contexts from pure field recordings to feedback and instrumental harmonics to shape relations through sound, his work interweaves the unfolding of complex beauty and the quiet brutality of nature in all of its forms, described by one audience member as 'like a punch in the face while elsewhere flowers bloomed.'"

Artist: NOVAK, YANN
Title: Relocation.Reconstruction
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 045CD
"Relocation.Reconstruction is derived from the sound elements of the three installations in Yann Novak's solo exhibition Relocation at Lawrimore Project (May 2009). In the original exhibition, Novak explored the multitude of emotional states experienced during and after the relocation of one's life. With this latest work, Novak continues his exploration into this theme a year after the initial event that inspired him, with the new insight that although he has arrived at his destination, the relocation process is far from over. By utilizing the altered sounds of the previous works as a point of departure, Relocation.Reconstruction retains some of the moods and themes of its predecessors, but reconstructs them into a slowly evolving, immersive composition. Textures, tones and faint melodies drift in and out of audible perception, never standing still, always in a state of becoming and disintegration. Through the development of this static, yet dynamic state, a familiar sense of melancholy arises from these simultaneous experiences of discovery and loss."

Artist: CORTEZ, SCOTT
Title: Twin Radiant Flux
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 046CD
"Twin Radiant Flux is a beautiful processed solo guitar work by Scott Cortez, the instrumentalist of Lovesliescrushing. This previously unreleased 60-minute work, recorded between 1997 and 1999, shows Cortez' unique pioneering aesthetic. With droning flows and melodic layered sonic drifts, Twin Radiant Flux predates some of the most important guitar-driven currents in contemporary electronic music. Scott Cortez (b.1969) is a textural guitarist, visual artist, based in Chicago. Cortez has been making instrumental ambient guitar music for over two decades. He embraces lo-fi minimalist aesthetics by limiting himself to guitars, 4-track cassette recorders, and looping pedals. From these modest tools he combines technique with various processed guitar textures to create droning, shimmering soundscapes. Cortez explores the textural possibilities of the guitar, creating music that ranges from experimental to post-rock to contemporary. His trademark sound combines guitar playing with digital techniques, using the guitar as a tone generator, processing the signal through various pedals and filters to create dense shimmering tapestries of sound. Cortez' music often incorporates drones and loops, which he crafts into enigmatic sound worlds with very subtle melodies. His work focuses mainly on the tonal possibilities of the guitar, and is usually produced without the aid of a computer."

Title: Objects of Memory
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 048CD
"These works occupy a position between an expanded notion of composition and a gallery-based art practice. The content of the works presented on this disc produce a slow series of gestures that give the illusion of stillness amidst a texture of continually developing material. The central concern in all of these pieces (the three fully scored works, the installation documentation, and the live-performance) is the construction of a sound world that is able to be environmental rather than temporal, proceeding slowly enough that it might be explored without the anxiety that it will move away too quickly. Like much of my output, I am interested in providing the listener with material that allows for an active agency of perception and that affords the ability to move through the sound autonomously. Whether the work is gallery-based, conceptual, or created for a concert hall, I am interested in viewing simple, everyday actions at extreme magnification, acknowledging failure by amplifying impossible tasks, and exploring the role of memory in forms that respect the contract between the composer, performer, and listener." --Seth Cluett.
"Cluett uses minimal materials derived from close listening and observation of the environment to point up the way in which we personalize our objects and actions. Through creative misuse of post-consumer goods, adaptive re-use of raw architectural elements, and a nostalgic obsession with dead technologies, these materials become instrumentalized. In this way, many of his pieces investigate the movement, patterns, and social organization of both work and play, while others explore the acoustic signature of specific locations, where sound is exposed as the result or goal of a social activity, a characteristic of architectural space, or a by-product of a geological process."

Title: Transparency (Performance)
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 049CD
"In 2010, sound artist Richard Chartier was awarded a Smithsonian Institution Artist Research Fellowship to explore the National Museum of American History's collection of 19th Century acoustic apparatus for scientific demonstration. Chartier focused on the works of the German physicist Rudolf Koenig, including the Grand Tonometer (c. 1870-1875). This beautiful and precise set of 692 tuning forks expresses the frequency range 520 v.s (vibration simple) (260 hz) to 8192 v.s. (4096 hz). The pitches of the forks extend over four octaves, affording a perfect means for testing, by enumeration of the beats, the number of vibrations producing any given note. The Grand Tonometer is the only instrument of its kind in existence. During his Fellowship, Chartier individually recorded each of these unique instrument's existing tuning forks as well as many other instruments, devices, and their tonal interactions. Rudolph Koenig considered the Grand Tonometer and his other creations to be purely scientific instruments. His precise workmanship extended the Grand Tonometer's range to frequencies across the field of human perception, thus allowing the listener a chance to witness the nature of sound itself. Chartier's own compositions juxtapose soft and hushed, almost imperceptible, fragments with high and low frequencies, bursts, and static in an asymptotic process that cuts away from and deepens the nature of sound, finally achieving compositional focus in the spaces between them. Chartier was particularly drawn to the Grand Tonometer, feeling a distinct connection to Koenig's approach to sound, and to his aim of a new, or enhanced, way of listening."

Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 050CD
"Inspired by the work of James Tenney, Gyorgy Ligeti, Charlemagne Palestine, and Conlon Nancarrow, Seth Horvitz's Eight Studies for Automatic Piano makes use of simple, computer-aided compositional processes to test the limits of human perception and machine precision. It relies on a bare minimum of technical means to explore notions of temporal distortion, iterative process, and elegant complexity. Presented in an immersive concert setting without the presence of a human performer, Eight Studies questions traditional notions of live performance and musical 'life.'"

Title: Soiree

Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 051CD
"Soiree is the result of extended recycling. Beginning from the investigation of: what will happen if I recycle (not remix) some of my older compositions and then recycle the recyclings and then recycle the recycled recycling -- ad infinitum? Quite quickly the initial pieces vanished totally. New structures and sounds emerged depending on the methods and tools I used. Each of the pieces on Soiree is based on a distinct composition of my musical past. In each case the listener is presented with the 10th 'generation' of this recycling process. Confronted with the variety of the results I ask myself: Is it really necessary to create further new electronic music if only one piece as a nucleus is sufficient to derive hundreds and hundreds of different distinct individual variants?" --Asmus Tietchens

Title: Proximities
Label: LINE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LINE 052CD
"Proximities was recorded in 2010 during my time as the artist-in-residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas. I began by recording a performance of a series of tones played on an old battery powered Paia Oz, that were determined by the letters A-G as found in a text by minimalist sculptor Donald Judd. I recorded the tone sequence several times during sunrise, amidst fifty of Judd's stainless steel sculptures in an old army barracks that has been converted into a museum. The performances were recorded with an H4 digital recorder, my iPhone and also a cheap Sony micro-cassette recorder. During several of the performances these small devices were emitting the sounds of previous performances from their tiny speakers. At times I also hummed. All of the processing in the recordings was generated by the extremely resonant physical space. The occasional popping sound, which can be heard at the end, are the sounds of Judd's sculpture expanding while the sunrise changed the temperature within the space." --Steve Roden

"LINE is proud to present a new work by Montreal sound artist France Jobin. Having released under her moniker i8u, Valence is her first release under her own name. Created entirely from transformed field recordings, this collection of three compositions has an elegant flowing simplicity. Slow harmonic modulations of a similar essence to the works of Eliane Radigue and Celer."
