Artist: BLUES MAGOOS
Title: Electric Comic Book
Label: MERCURY
Format: LP
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: MG 21104LP
Exact repro of the band's second album. "The Blues Magoos' first album, Psychedelic Lollipop, earned the band a major hit single, '(We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet,' and in the grand tradition of striking while the iron was hot, the New York-based quintet were back with their second LP, 1967's Electric Comic Book, less than five months later. The sophomore effort is a noticeably more ambitious piece of work than the Magoos' debut, and while psychedelia was a catchphrase more than anything else on the first record, Electric Comic Book sounds trippier and a bit more expansive by comparison." --All Music Guide

Artist: BLUES MAGOOS
Title: Psychedelic Lollipop
Label: MERCURY
Format: LP
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: SR 61096LP
Exact repro of this 1966 debut album. "'(We Ain't Got) Nothing Yet' is an extraordinary and magical two minutes and ten seconds which, like the Box Tops' 'The Letter,' is one of those little two-minute blasts of pop which brought the transistor radio to life and which is the proverbial breath of fresh air on oldies radio stations daring enough to play psychedelia. Psychedelic Lollipop is the real thing, the band looking on the LP cover like Captain Kirk abandoned them on some forgotten Star Trek planet, the music inside, authentic acid pop. They stretch J.D. Loudermilk's 'Tobacco Road' across four and a half Seeds-style minutes, obliterating the Nashville Teens' 1964 hit recording in the process. D.Blue's 'Queen of My Nights' may have inspired The Troggs' 1968 hit 'Love Is All Around.' The melody might be different, but the intro music is identical to what Reg Presley gave the world a couple of years after this. Producers Bob Wyld and Art Polhemus do a great job of keeping the intensity up across two sides of this album. Psychedelic Lollipop is a solid and precious gem from the Nuggets vaults, the difference between this and other one-hit artists being that you can play the entire album repeatedly, quite an accomplishment coming from the era of the hit single. That such a tremendous smash like '(We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet' kicks the whole thing off is just an added bonus." --All Music Guide

Artist: MILES EXPRESS, THE BUDDY
Title: Electric Church
Label: MERCURY
Format: LP
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: SR 61222LP
Exact repro reissue, originally released in 1969. "Buddy Miles' second album (credited to Buddy Miles Express) gets most of its attention in retrospect for the role of Jimi Hendrix, who produced part of it and played on some tracks as well. On its own merits, though, it's a fairly respectable soul-rock album. Hendrix was referring to his own material as 'electric church' music on some occasions in the late 1960s, and likely he had something like the soul-funk-rock fusion of Band of Gypsys in mind when he conceived this. Of course Miles played in Band of Gypsys, and there wasn't any way the music he was writing and singing on his own was going to measure up to what Hendrix was doing. On the other hand, here his writing and singing benefit from not being placed within the context of a band in which Hendrix was primarily responsible for those functions (thus leading to inevitable unfavorable comparisons), as was the case on the Band of Gypsys album. The songs are mostly vehicles for Miles' high, soulful vocals and the energetic funky arrangements, but as such things go they're pretty solid and pleasurable. Naturally for some listeners, the go-to highlights will be '69 Freedom Special,' which has some good Hendrix wah-wah licks, and 'Miss Lady,' on which Jimi plays in a more conventional R&B style. While the majority of this is feel-good and brassy, Miles does show he's capable of handling more tender soul melodies and sentiments in 'Cigarettes & Coffee' and 'My Chant.'" -- All Music Guide

Artist: VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR
Title: The Aerosol Grey Machine
Label: MERCURY
Format: LP
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: SR 61238LP
Exact repro reissue, originally released in 1969. A less bloated affair due in part to the fact that this was initially meant to be Peter Hammill's solo debut -- and some of the songs anticipate his later solo work. "Overall, The Aerosol Grey Machine is very much of its time, from the title track's Bonzo-esque jingle to 'Aquarian,' an anthemic, '60s zeitgeist sing-along: 'We are riding on rainbows and happy today / Now we move to the sun in every direction / We are cloaked in veils of mystic protection / Joking a lot, smoking or not / Floating our yacht off to freedom / Voting to be Aquarian!' Peace and love notwithstanding, there are strong portents of the direction Van der Graaf Generator would take." -- Trouser Press

Artist: BLACKFOOT, J.D.
Title: The Ultimate Prophecy
Label: MERCURY
Format: LP
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: SR 61288LP
Exact repro reissue, featuring the original René Magritte-inspired cover art, as originally issued in the U.S. in 1970. "J.D. Blackfoot's The Ultimate Prophecy, originally released on the Mercury label (SR 61288) in 1970, is widely regarded as one of the top US psych albums of all time. The band, which was from Columbus, Ohio, began as a combination of two local groups, The EbbTide and Tree, the latter winning a recording contract with Mercury as a prize in a local band competition. Craig Fuller, later a founding member of Pure Prairie League, joined the band, which by this time had changed its name to J.D. Blackfoot, after some of the material for The Ultimate Prophecy had been written. Shortly after the release of the album, Blackfoot left the group which continued to perform as Osiris, while J.D. himself assembled a new outfit which delivered two well-received albums for Fantasy. The Ultimate Prophecy with its killer psych guitar, combined a strong British sound with the distinctive song-oriented California sound of Grateful Dead and Neil Young, two of the main inspirations for many an aspiring rock musician of the time. However, despite the laid back rural West Coast sound that the band effortlessly cultivates, shades of UK progsters such as Jethro Tull and the Moody Blues often come to the fore revealing what is, in essence the group's true musical intentions. Nevertheless, this is a fine album, beautifully played (drummer Dan Waldron is in many ways the hero of the hour) and extremely well recorded."

Title: The Wizards from Kansas
Label: MERCURY
Format: LP
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: SR 61309LP
Exact repro reissue, originally issued on Mercury in 1970 -- one of the classic 2nd tier American psych albums to be released on a major label. "Recently receiving a lot of interest and rightly so, 'cause these Midwest boys blow most Bay Area groups away on their own turf. Took me a while to get into it, now I rate it among the best late '60s psych-rock LPs. Powerful hippie rock with prototype heavy moves, strong songwriting and brilliant performances -- the rhythm section is awesome. There are many good albums in the epic psych genre but this one is charged with a special spirit that creeps upon you over time. And 'Country Dawn' has to be one of the best rural rockers ever." --Patrick Lundborg, The Acid Archives

Artist: SIR LORD BALTIMORE
Title: Kingdom Come
Label: MERCURY
Format: LP
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: SR 61328LP
Gatefold 180 gram reissue, licensed from Universal. "Did you ever wish that 'Speed King', 'Highway Star' and 'Fireball' were the only songs Deep Purple had ever recorded? Did you ever feel that everything Blue Cheer recorded after side one of OutsideInside was unnecessary, including side two of that very LP? Did you ever lament that telling people just how much you love 'I'm on Fire' and 'Atomic Punk' from Van Halen 1 inevitably made them think you secretly loved later sub-Genesis detritus such as 'Jump' as well? Well, search out this album and you've got everything you need in one record." -- Head Heritage

Artist: CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & HIS MAGIC BAND
Title: Bluejeans & Moonbeams
Label: MERCURY
Format: LP
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: SRM 1018LP
Exact repro reissue of Captain Beefheart's ninth album, originally released in 1974. Recorded during his more commercial period and featuring some sort of prop formation of the disbanded Magic Band that would never appear on any other recording, this one goes down smoother than Trout Mask and, while historically written off by purists as the one to forget about, actually stands as a testament to how authentically weird Van Vliet could be, even at his most normal. Includes a cover of J.J. Cale's "Same Old Blues" and "Party Of Special Things To Do," a track later covered on a 2001 EP by the White Stripes (who would've thought?).
