"Fully cementing Mercury Rev's rebirth as purveyors of a cosmic brand of the popular American songbook,
Deserter's Songs
is an album of grandiose proportions. Merging jazz, folk, sweeping orchestration, and a dose of '60s rock, the album was intended as the band's swan song and therefore made with utter abandon. However, it became the band's most acclaimed platter and remains one of the essential records of the past 25 years.
Deserter's Songs
was released to huge worldwide acclaim and went on to be named album of the year in 1998 by NME, MOJO and many other publications, quickly propelling the legendary iconoclasts into living rooms worldwide and pioneered the launch of a new genre of music, heard today in bands like Arcade Fire and Beirut. Originally released on V2 Records,
Deserter's
is Light In The Attic Records' impassioned choice to launch their new imprint, Modern Classics Recordings. Specializing in contemporary reissues from 1980 to today, Modern Classics will re-release your all-time favorite discs pressed on virgin black vinyl, the way they should be heard. Modern Classics'
Deserter's Songs
is the first LP reissue of this landmark album, long overdue if you ask us. Beautiful audio re-master comes courtesy of co-producer and original Mercury Rev member David Fridmann, pressed on 180-gram vinyl, and housed in an expanded gatefold jacket with 4-page insert. Each copy will receive a free download card for two live tracks plus an exclusive audio commentary/interview with the band while 100 randomly selected albums will include a photo personally autographed by Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper."

MCR 901LP
"This is the second release on Light In The Attic Records' new imprint Modern Classics Recordings. 'Low-rock' and 'fuck-rock' are two descriptors enigmatic Morphine front man Mark Sandman used to describe his band's beat-inspired blues-jazz-rock holy racket. Along with Sandman's baritone vocal delivery and oddball two-string bass styling, co-founder Dana Colley played a saxophone as his lead instrument of choice instead of the expected guitar, creating a quirky and burning sensibility. Original drummer Jerome Deupree, who was replaced by percussionist Billy Conway during the recording of 1993's
Cure For Pain
, flushed out the unorthodox trio. Hailed by the alternative college-rock community in the mid-1990s after motion picture soundtrack placements in
Spanking the Monkey
and the MTV animated series
Beavis and Butt-head
, such commercial endorsements did little to distract from
Cure For Pain's
deep soul. Released on vinyl as the second title in Light In The Attic's
Modern Classics
series, following a reissue of Mercury Rev's seminal
Deserter's Songs
(MCR 900LP), we're happy to make this album accessible to music lovers the world over." First-ever US vinyl issue. Audio lovingly remastered for 180-gram wax. 180-gram LP housed in expanded gatefold jacket with four page insert featuring interviews with surviving band members.
