Artist: JONES
Title: Like Me You're Like Me
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $9.00
Catalog #: PEN 015CD
Debut release from Jones, a new artist on Rephlex and a member of the Cornwall Posse (ie. a friend of Richard James, Luke Vibert and Tom Middleton). Rephlex continues to throw everyone's expectations into the sewer, with this strange, somewhat "funny" release of prog/big-beat thumpery, electronic whatsis and the closest approximation of Rephlex Rock that there has ever been. "An eclectic 8 track single that Jones recorded in his caravan. As Jones himself says on the artwork, 'It all started when I went out to dinner with Bernie Winters, age 7. By 9, I was friends with Rod Stewart. My brother is Tom Jones. First band at 13 with Luke Vibert. Later, joined 'Arnold' (kicked out, thankfully) and decided to get solo'd up. My dad is Howard Jones. First place with Tom Middleton in Roger Taylor's Cornish Breakdance challenge. Maybe you've heard me on Kiss, or even seen me in Echoes, Melody Maker, or Penthouse. I enjoy talking to MTV and streaking at festivals. I am an orange teddy bear. Every word of this is true, I swear on my sixth string."

Artist: SAM & VALLEY
Title: 2nd, 3rd, 4th Selection
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: REPH 048CD
A bit overstocked on this one, so on sale at a reduced price. A new, utterly odd and disconcertingly charming group from Japan, discovered by Aphex. Naive computer rock/pop, barely connected to planet earth, performed by this trio on keyboards, vocals, bass, computer, guitar. According to their official bio, "'Alex de K' who was solo-active passing through the Japanese Punk band 'clarise' etc, met 'Special & Max' the computer-programming artist in Tokyo. They were kindred sprits, formed the unit (Sam & Valley) in 1995. The minute melody by 'Special & Max', roughhewn sound by 'Alex de K', putting them together, (Sam & Valley) can create unknown rock style. It is named 'unsuitable rock' by them. In 1996, 'Tango Rooster' who was enthusiastic-fan of (Sam & Valley) since 3rd as a changeable guitarist. All of them are Japanese."

Artist: O'DELL, ROBERT
Title: Presents...
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $8.00
Catalog #: REPH 073XCD
A split EP of sorts, featuring Robert O'Dell productions: Pop Device doing 'Black" and Indigenous Tribe doing "Flight 313". Freaky, but not like Freakwincey (thankfully). Only about 6 minutes long. "An EP of dope Stateside electronic hip hop/dance pop with boomin' bass and baaad lyrics. Robert O'Dell has done two remixes for George Clinton that are currently unreleased. He's worked in Detroit and LA as engineer and producer for countless number of professional artists, and has played live a lot. O'Dell's influences range from Bowie, Prince and Björk to B52's, James Brown and Busta Rhymes. He loves to engineer hip hop and has recently taken up professional go-kart racing."

Artist: HECKER/VOAFOSE
Title: Kit 001
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: 10"
Price: $9.00
Catalog #: KIT 001EP
This is a limited edition vinyl pressing featuring selected tracks from the forthcoming Rephlex albums by Florian Hecker of Mego and Jeremy Simmonds aka Voafose (of Vibert/Simmonds notoriety). Simmonds says, "The aim is to provide a mixture of atmosphericals, reflections, aural psychosis and comedy." It's also a chance for Rephlex to showcase someone they consider to be a master of timbre and sonic wit. The record is intended for scientific publication, collections, audiophile vinyl enthusiasts and DJs.

Artist: URBAN TRIBE
Title: Acceptable Side Effects
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: 7"
Price: $6.50
Catalog #: LTD 007EP
This is a special limited edition release to promote both the recent & forthcoming albums by Urban Tribe on Rephlex. Each album's artwork appears on the labels though the tracks are exclusive for this release, for undercover DJ action and audiophile collectors. Urban Tribe aka Drexciyan DJ Stingray aka Sherard Ingram, Detroit legend, most famous for his early techno masterpiece, "Covert Action," on Carl Craig's Retroactive imprint. The tracks on this single are a dancefloor techno/electro hybrid, sounding something like Derrick May and Underground Resistance backed with a downright filthy electronic braindance groove.

Artist: D'ARCANGELO
Title: Pro
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $9.00
Catalog #: PRO 188EP
Fabrizio and Marco D'Arcangelo share their love for synth-generated music. Fond of electronic music since the British new wave invasion of the '80s, the two brothers were keen on embarking onto early experimental music through the aid of affordable samplers and PCs. The aim behind the forthcoming album Exsel is to gather the quintessence of the D'Arcangelo project over the last 10 years. This EP features three downtempo/leftfield/electronic tracks, mellow and solid techno-hop, backed with the now-classic electro anthem, "Diagram 2 (Original Mix);" all tracks exclusive to this EP.

Artist: CAUSTIC WINDOW
Title: Compilation
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 009CD
Repressed. Caustic Window is Richard D. James aka Aphex Twin/AFX/Diceman/Gak/Polygon Window/Q-Chastic/Soit-PP/Blue Calx/Rich of Mike And Rich/etc... This release collects ALL of the audio from his classic Joyrex J4/J5/J9i/J9ii releases (originally issued in the early-mid '90s on a head-scratching array of picture disc singles and limited vinyl) onto a neat (albeit far less graphically appealing) CD/3LP compendium, a welcome surprise after seeing the demand for original vinyl increase near-exponentially, as of late. A varied mix of Dicky's trademark AFX melancholy and hardcore acid maelstrom. "The Caustic Window EPs were the first to appear on Rephlex and instantly set the standards for everyone else to follow. The first two EPs were limited to 2000 copies each and remain among the most in-demand records on many a trainspotter's list." Hotly tipped. In demand. Rephlex's new motto is "File under Braindance."

Artist: KINESTHESIA
Title: Empathy Box
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $12.50
Catalog #: REPH 022CD
1994 album by Chris Jeffs, who now only seems to record under the name Cylob. Packaged in a white jewel case with silkscreened type on top, this is a melancholic classic of ambient-techno in a post-Selected Ambient Works Vol. II vein. Pure synthetic washes of totally Rephlexian-vibe sound. Limited stock.

Artist: MIKE & RICH
Title: Expert Knob Twiddlers
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 027CD
1996 classic, repressed! The one-and-only duo album from early '96 by Mr. Mike Paradinas (aka µ-ziq) and Mr. Richard D. James (aka AFX). Not the experimental freakout experimental electronic-fest many expected but somewhat underrated at the same time for it's collection of cheesy effects and programming & incessant melodies. A "funny" record of illusionary game soundtracking that might get better with proper datage.

Artist: GENTLE PEOPLE, THE
Title: Soundtracks For Living
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $12.50
Catalog #: REPH 045CD
The Gentle People are Dougee Dimensional, Honeymink, Laurie LeMans & Leo Valentine Carnelian. "Renowned for their mellow easy-listening parties and performances at the Big Chill, these one time neighbors of Richard James are in a world of their own (literally). Their sound blends stereo demonstration kitsch and ambient sound pools with a healthy dose of 60's throw-away pop sensibility. The perfect soundtrack for a Paris schoolgirl living in a black and white French New Wavefilm. Their two EPs and full length album for Rephlex have brought them attention from swingers worldwide." --Gonzi Merchan. Limited stock.

Artist: K-ROCK
Title: New Deal
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: REPH 050EP
"As his graffiti tag states, K-Rock, nee Kelly Potter comes from the N5 borough of London, and lives on Highbury estate. Kelly started his professional raving career as a dancer for Baby Ford -- you can spot him spinning in the 'Children Of The Revolution' video a top 40 hit back in 1991 -- and has been a long-time Rephlex Assault Squad member as an international DJ, MC and dancer. After released two highly acclaimed EP's on ED DMX'S celebrated Breakin records, K-Rock's music comes home to Rephlex this summer, expect an EP of rough moody old school tracks with a strong garage influence, reflecting the sounds of the streets around Kelly's area and the techno, house and rare groove he loves so much. With 10 tracks 'New Deal' is an EP in absolute full length format and even features a free 7"."

Artist: DYNAMIX II
Title: Electro Megamix
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $12.50
Catalog #: REPH 065CD
Classic oldschool electro compilation, full of early Kraftwerk sampling mania, etc. "The Members of the group are David Noller and Scott Weiser. David got his start spinning in Clubs back in '85. He used to play samples over dance music using an Emulator. That same year he made the song 'Just Give The DJ A Break'. In '86 he signed to Bass Station Records in Miami. Shortly thereafter he met Scott, who had been playing piano since the age of six and synthesizers since the early 80's. They decided to build a studio by bringing together their collection of drum machines, samplers and analogue gear. Together they have been releasing electronic dance albums for over a decade, packing the dance floors with cult classics like 'Techno Bass', 'Don't Touch That Dial', and the legendary 'Just Give The DJ A Break' (which sold 600,000 copies in America). Vowing to always stay in the underground, they comment on their gold records from the 80's, stating 'It was always word of mouth, the music always sold because it was good at the time, not because of some promotional scheme". Eleven Albums and thirteen years later, the duo is going through a major revival because of today's resurgence of electro music. Their older classic songs are now being sampled by newer bands like Eon, The Cotton Club and The Chemical Brothers, to name a few. 'It's odd, Dynamix II explain, 'Many of the club kids at the raves and parties we play were children when 'Just Give The DJ A Break' came out in 1986. So many of them have never heard of us or they think that we are new.' To circumvent this, the group has recently compiled this one hour continuous mix CD subtitled ? 1985 To Present. It's a collection of 15 tracks from 9 different albums and time periods." Limited stock, deleted item

Artist: 808 STATE
Title: Newbuild
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 080CD
"The long awaited reissue of 808 State's groundbreaking and much sought after debut album. Originally released as a limited single vinyl LP in 1988, Newbuild is presented here for the first time on CD and as a 3x12" vinyl set (meaning it can be played much louder in discotheques!). Newbuild features the original 808 State line up of Graham Massey, Martin Price and Gerald Simpson aka A Guy Called Gerald back in his acid days before drum'n'bass was invented. Newbuild is hailed by many, including the likes of Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and Luke Vibert, as one of the most influential records of all time."

Title: You're The One (Part Two)/I'm The Disco Dancing
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $8.00
Catalog #: REPH 083CD
Second release from one of Aphex's dancing teddy bears, Jones. Rephlex claims that his last single ("Like Me You're Like Me" was once NME's single of the week. "Having been on white label since the end of last year, it is already in big demand, probably due to additional production duties preformed by Cylob, who has turned it into a 'dancefloor pleaser'." Four tracks, two of which are Cylob mixes.

Artist: FUSCHIMUSCHI
Title: Super Sexy Lady/My #1
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $8.00
Catalog #: REPH 084CD
"Fuschimuschi was started as a solo project in 1997 by multi-instrumental funky boy Fuschimuschi Math-Ice. His first release Fuschimuschi's Short Stories was recorded in two weeks entirely on a 4-track. The result got to the best critics in the German music press, and was compared with Prince, Ween, and Beck because of the trashy, cheap funkiness and humor in the music. The release of the 12" Boogie Down followed in 1998, and now Rephlex presents Super Sexy Lady. This is the first official single from the Fuschimuschi band, who are Fuschimuschi Math-Ice, Don Jovanni, and DJ Juicy Snare." Features a Bogdan Raczynski remix.

Title: Braindance Coincidence
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: REPH 100CD
"Operating from a blind spot in a parallel universe has often creates new situations, and more importantly, new beginnings. For instance: Luke Vibert's first recorded release; Drexciya's first mission outside the USA; Terry Housemaster Baldwin's Future Sound compilation; Atom Heart's Lisa Carbon Trio collaboration with Pete Namlook; Seefeel's leftfield excursion Ch-Vox, Squarepusher's debut album; Leila's debut album; Mu-Ziq's debut album; Jp Buckle debut album (now UK Top 10 artist and co-writer for Britney Spears!); Electro Godfathers Dynamix 2 retrospective; the re-release of 808 State's classic debut album; Slipper release featuring original member of The Damned!; debut single of co-producer of Juan Atkins and George Clinton, Robert O'Dell... and The Philosophy of Sound and Machine project with A.R.T, which kickstarted the bigger picture, inspiring a whole new breed of forward-thinking electronic music labels across the globe. It's a hardcore mission to summarize the 'best' or 'most interesting' things that have happened in a decade of Rephlex records, especially in public! Here, Maddog Wallace (co-founder of said institution) has a bash at doing it: 'Best was actually starting the label with my friend Richard. Seeing the records in the shops, hearing them played on pirate radio, getting our first review in Echoes, a full page photo of our T-Shirts in ID... our initial ambition was quickly achieved. Soon after that, one of our tracks was used on the Pirelli ad (Carl Lewis with treads on his feet, running across the sea). This was the first of many audiovisual interactions for film and TV... the most recent being Channel 4's Hackers documentary, where 'Braindance' was used exclusively for the duration. By reaching people in this way, we get to ralf back all the chod that is usually fed to us in the mainstream and show how good things can be. The finest moments of all however, are when we sign a great demo. Meeting new artists like Leila, Squarepusher and Cylob makes our world very colourful and, after 100 releases, I hope that our small band of renegades are representing for the massive' at large. We think we've summed it up well on our compilation, The Braindance Coincidence." Artists include: The Gentle People, Global Goon, Cylob, DMX Krew, D'Arcangelo, Bochum Welt, The Railway Raver, Baby Ford, AFX, U-Ziq, Vulva, Vibert Simmonds, Chaos A.D., Bogdan Raczynski, Mike Dred/Peter Green, Ovuca.

Artist: SLIPPER
Title: Invisible Movies
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: REPH 103CD
"Although you might not be familiar with the name Slipper, these people are certainly no strangers to the music business. Slipper is a solo project by London's Sam Dodson (a.k.a. Sam Gita), with a little help from his friends Linda Finger (a.k.a. Nidhal Bulbull) and Liz Fletcher. They've both sung for Loop Guru. And yes, Rat Scabies, that punk legend from the Dammed who had already done remixes for Pop Will Eat Itself, Jean Michelle Jarre and Mickey Hart. Slipper's first appearance was on the Art of Ruins, and he's also appeared on David Toop's Hot Pants Idol album. These people know what they're doing and so do we. Braindance for the new millennium."

Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: REPH 108CD
Operation Braindancer. 'You are to travel & perform around 4 continents. Europe, Australia, America & The Far East.' 'Take your PowerBook & do not return until you have made an album!' The result is Laptop Dancing. Ten tracks, each one recorded in a different country -- from Reykjavik to Byron Bay and Old San Juan to Tel Aviv. Ranging from programmed breaks & scratches. Electro & Techno for raving at the steelworks, chamber orchestration and a masterclass in dark and moody sound design. --MIKE DRED (Kosmik Kommando, Universal Indicator, Chimera).

Artist: YEE-KING
Title: Super User
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: REPH 109CD
2000 release. "Matt Yee-King (25), another new artist on Rephlex, but by no means a stranger to music making. At 16 he started playing drums and was in a school band with Tom 'Squarepusher' Jenkinson and Jordan 'Railway Raver' Muscott. He went to university in Leeds and learnt how to drink cheap cider and genetically modify viruses. After graduating with his BSc in Zoology and Genetics he moved to Brighton and wrote loads of tracks and was in a band with Jamie Lidelle (Supercollider) and did a couple of improv gigs with Tom Jenkinson. Then he went back to university again to learn what artificial life is and how to genetically modify music. He is java programmer by trade, and also designed the web site for Action on Smoking and Health. www.ash.org.uk/. He likes strong cheese and fish, claims to be musically influenced by Aphex, Squarepusher and any 'funny rock bands? like Whitesnake and James Joyce' and he doesn't like people who won't argue. Basically he's a brainbox-computer-wizzkid. Most people own a copy of Warp's Artificial Intelligence, Matt Yee-King went one step further and got an MSC in it."

Artist: RACZYNSKI, BOGDAN
Title: My Love I Love
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: REPH 115CD
"Rephlex have nurtured this peddler of noise and prose through 3 albums and at least 39 war-torn performances, as well as evictions from 3 countries. However, on Myloveilove, his 'soundtrack for sobbing', Bogdan resurfaces with an assault on the human heart in his strongest album to date. Crying accordions, broken-hearted beats, wallowing trumpets stolen from an anonymous grade school, flutes, solid-wood guitars and a vocal repertoire reminiscent of the fall season in Nagoya (when birds sing gently, yet rain pours) all feature on this musical document, depicting 2 years of the joys, pain and anguish of love. It has been noted that tracks from this album would fit well in between the music of Aphex Twin, Leila, Ennio Morricone, Air, Radiohead or Beck in a popular radio show. So Rephlex asks that you to give this relatively under-exposed and hugely-talented artist your full support."

Artist: CYLOB
Title: Mood Bells
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 122CD
"A beautiful home listening album from inventive rephlex stalwart Cylob, conjures up an imagined magical occidental music. Cylob's thoughts on the album: Mood Bells was started after a two-week trip to Japan, where I got to check out a few temples, gardens and mountains. There is a chilled out feeling to some of those places that seems unique and it inspired me. This album is my idea of a Japanese traditional music that doesn't exist, based around bell and gong-type sounds. The music is intended for contemplation and relaxation, and to be listened to in one sitting, perhaps accompanied by a cup of green tea. I wanted the album to have a very natural atmosphere, even though the processes of its production were very unnatural. Initially I was going to list the sound sources used on the album sleeve notes, but the music is a figment of my imagination, and I didn't want anything to ruin this 'illusion'. Some things are recognisable though, such as the vibraphone and the tam tam gong at the beginning of the album."

Artist: ASTROBOTNIA
Title: Part 1
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: REPH 123CD
"Astrobotnia is a new and mysterious signing on Rephlex with three (!) releases coming up this year, taking in influences from braindance peers such as Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Bogdan Raczynski, Drexciya and Luke Vibert. Part 1 is a fluffy musical bed and starts with the sound of gasps as fireworks explode and ends with canned applause for a lonesome piano player. Throughout, you will hear music inspired by the dream of a pregnant male friend and a voice that intones, 'Satan is good, Satan is our pal'. Sounds weird and scary? It certainly does, but Part 1 is a most relaxing, melodic journey through Astrobotnia's cosmos. However, there could be turbulences along the way. Astrobotnia is along the best and most interesting music that was ever released on Rephlex and an absolute must for everyone into new and exiting music."

Artist: ASTROBOTNIA
Title: Part 3
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 125CD
"'Part 3' is the third and final release of Astrobotnia, the new mysterious braindance artist on Rephlex. Combining the ambient atmosphere from 'Part 1' with the dancefloor elements from 'Part 2' this long play CD showcases the whole range of the Astrobotnia universe: Unearthly chimes, whispers of Enochian languages, deep space drum-and-bass programmed using broken components from the flight deck of an old space shuttle, with radar bleeps and the sound of supernovas. The ultimate part of the series."

Artist: PP ROY
Title: Seven Up
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $8.00
Catalog #: REPH 126CD
"PP Roy returns with a distinctive brain blast of flavours on his new ep: Seven Up. Hearing is believing. Over its seven tracks, the music on this EP is even more fantastic than on his outstanding debut album You Can't help Liking PP Roy. Featured on this sumptuous cornucopia the listener can find breakstep classics, a collaboration with fellow Rephlex artist Global Goon, electronic bird bleeps, oap poetry, new country, ambient and illbient and fine string arrangements. These sum parts add up to a genre-busting bonanza that will delight whether you are relaxing in the living room or dancing in the disco tech. This is a release that could slide up to Missy Elliot, share some canapés with the avalanches then compare notes with DJ Shadow."

Title: Broken Toys' Corner
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 127CD
"The musical siblings Marco & Fabrizio D'Arcangelo grew up listening to English new wave and electro-pop and were so enchanted by it they wanted to make their own contributions. However, their records along with the music of other vital artists contributed to the definitive 'sound of Rome', coming through on labels like Sounds Never Seen, ACV, Nature, their own Monomorph label and more recently on Canada's Suction records. Broken Toys' Corner is their second album for Rephlex. In contrast to the critically acclaimed Shipwreck released in 1999, this new album is a more relaxed and rather groovy listening experience. Using vocoders, complex Hip Hop rhythms and minimal synths, they make a deceptively simple, soulful contemporary sound."

Artist: TRANSLLUSION

Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 128CD

Since then they've released albums and singles on Warp, Tresor, Clone, and of course Detroit's legendary Underground Resistance. On their new album L.I.F.E Transllusion unleash another wave of their unequalled Electro."

Title: Eurotechno
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: REPH 129CD
"Rephlex presents the first ever release of the soundtrack of the video Eurotechno from 1989. Hailed as a visionary landmark in dance music culture this mini-album is must for everybody into Acid Techno magic. The man behind the music is Brian Dougans who is most famous as half of the duo Future Sound Of London, but early recognition came for him with the European and UK hit single 'Stakker Humanoid', under the name Humanoid in 1988. Around the same time, he teamed up with the groundbreaking video artist Mark McClean aka Stakker, after meeting at Salford College. Mark built a video suite around a Fairlight Graphics box; Brian found a Roland TB303 (the machine responsible for the squelchy acid noise) in the basement of his college and began using it, creating sketches similar to those he was hearing emerge in Manchester at the beginnings of the Acid House scene. Their synergy was unique and extremely exciting, and the partnership culminated in the creative masterpiece Eurotechno, released on Virgin's Videola label. This video was the first time the emerging bedroom electronics scene expanded into the visual medium. It was essentially one of the first commercial V.J tools, showing just how much could be done by bedroom programmers. When the video was released, Rephlex were still in school uniforms and living in Cornwall, but it was one of the main things that inspired us to set up a label. For us this is the fulfillment of a long-term dream; to make the soundtrack of this visionary film available for the first time on CD and Vinyl. The album was painstakingly tracked down and mastered direct from the original master tapes of the film. It captures the audio overload of the incredible music in all its intricate, precise detail. The release of this soundtrack isn't an exercise in nostalgia, or a cash in on all things 'old school'. We are delighted to release this music, as we genuinely feel it sounds as fresh, exciting and unsurpassable at this time as any other, and for this reason it needs to be listened to and enjoyed rather than forgotten."

Title: Sounds Never Seen
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $12.50
Catalog #: REPH 132CD
"Lory D is a name you will find missing from the list of celebrated dark techno producers, e.g. Jeff Mills, The Mover, Lenny Dee and the Aphex Twin although his music, is as essential. He's an ex Italian D.M.C champion who has been playing since 1989 and owns the seminal Roman techno label Sounds Never Seen. He was one of the first people to bring the Acid House and Hardcore sounds of London to Rome, where he is regarded as something of a god. His inspiration comes from Rome's nighttime metropolis, the darkness and beauty of the city and the overwhelming feeling of the underground raves he plays. His musical influences are as wide ranging as Aphex Twin, Suicide, Drexciya, Spk, Ligeti, Frankie Bones, The Mover and Underground Resistance. Sounds Never Seen has released a clutch of twisted metal soundtracks in recent years... never more than 500 copies pressed and all fanatically collected by likeminded freaks. All the records are most effective floor fillers, all are 'sounds never seen'. Together with Rephlex label-mates, Leo Anibaldi, Bochum Welt and the D'Arcangelo brothers, Lory D best represents the sound of Italy, or even the 'sound of Rome', since 1991. Lory's music is fearless, original and strong Electro and Techno. There isn't much of that around and the world needs to hear this album."

The way he makes music is by thinking 'will this record mash the place up, and infect the vibe?' So when you listen to this, bear witness. The music he makes was inspired by dancing all night at the peak of the UK rave scene, also European clubs like Tresor and the Bunker, the UK free party scene and the dance floor militancy of labels such as Underground Resistance. Over his career he has released material on a number of other notable labels including Position Chrome (under the alias The Redeemer co-produced with Panacea), kool.POP, Klangkrieg, Full Watts and more recently on I-Sound's newly formed imprint Transparent. His music is a cross fertilisation of Dancehall, Jungle and Breakbeat Hardcore with the shrill noise and energy of Punk. It"s a powerful collision of styles and approaches combining uncompromising experimentalism with healthy doses of sound system inspired populism. DJ Scud has gained a reputation as a fine re-mixer, lending his skills to artists such as DJ Rupture and Asian Dub Foundation and was dubbed the new Aphex Twin by Radio 1's Steve Lamaq. He regularly plays at parties in Europe and the States and has gained a reputation for his punishing, shrill sets, maintaining his total commitment to single minded full-on uncompromising sonic assaults whilst still keeping feet on the floor with infectious breaks and beats."

Artist: GAMA, VICTOR
Title: Pangeia Instruments
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 135CD
"Victor Gama was born in Angola of Portuguese origin. In 1993 he started to create his Pangeia Instrumentos, inspired by the notion that because of migration and nomadisim, traditional African instruments have had to adapt throughout history, whilst keeping their traditional identity and sound. This suggests that, traditional acoustic instruments from ancient times could still evolve into contemporary musical instruments. This is exactly what the Pangeia Instrumentos are. What is also unusual about the instruments is that two people can play them at the same time. The music has beauty and ragged harmony, transcending the ancient and modern, African and Occidental. At times it echoes the American minimalist composers. This is the second release on Rephlex to explore the craft of instrument building; Pierre Bastien's 2001 release Mecanoid, being the first."

Title: Gun Disease
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $5.00
Catalog #: REPH 137CD
"This release is the sister release to AFXs Smojphace EP which features a remix of the track 'Run The Place Red' from The Bug's Pressure album. The Bug aka Kevin Martin was indelibly marked by the skull crushing impact of seismic UK dub sound systems (Jah Shaka, Aba-Shanti-I, Iration Steppas etc.) throughout the 90s, and became increasingly obsessed with Ragga's bionic gyrations. Under various guises (Ice, God, Techno Animal, Curse Of The Golden Vampire), Kevin Martin has worked with Bill Laswell, John Zorn, Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Alec Empire And Def Jux's El-P, among many others. Cutty Ranks is one of the greatest DeeJays ever to come out of Jamaica. His debut 45, 'Gunman Lyrics' was a dancehall hit, which was quickly followed with tunes like 'Out Of Hand' or 'Fisherman Lyrics' for Winston Riley's Techniques label and 'The Bomber' (Shocking Vibes) which was his first worldwide dancehall smash at the beginning of the 1990s. Rephlex is proud that The Bug has recorded with Cutty, because, unlike a large number of the stars of dancehall, he doesn't voice out too many tunes keeping it strict. This track is a reworking of the aforementioned Gunman lyrics."

Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 143CD
Now available on CD in addition to the 3LP version. "Once again Luke Vibert has delivered Rephlex a delectable slice of musical pleasure, which unusually, is singularly dedicated to the delights of disco music. "I don't think many people will believe it's me who's made it," say's Luke. "It doesn't sound anything like me. Just simple disco grooves. It sounds live, but it's all programmed to sound like old disco." It might come as a bit of a shock after the rave-tastic and well received junglist anthems of 2003 as Amen Andrews or the acid Tinged Yoseph album released on Warp records. Luke's inimitable take is stripped down like early house, organic sounding but with a lush glowing contemporary electronic feel, all groovy handclaps, strings, cowbells, horns and creamy basslines, highly addictive and very fresh. If you're wondering why the album is called Kerrier District, it's named after a local council in mid Cornwall where Luke grew up, not a place known for it's glittering debonair nightlife but it's a name that sounds well, pretty cool. A fellow Cornishman and contemporary of Rephlex label boss Richard James, Luke Vibert has released music under various pseudonyms including the off-kilter funk of Wagon Christ, the seminal drum 'n' bass of Plug and a collaboration with steel guitarist BJ Cole as well as remixing a host of his peers. Kid 606 even did a track called 'Luke Vibert Can Kiss My Indie Punk Whiteboy Ass', which pinched a sample from the Plug track 'Military Jazz'. (Always a gentleman, Luke played a gig with the Kid in Los Angeles in 2001). Luke has also compiled two albums of library music (Nuggets, Further Nuggets) for Lo Recordings. He regularly D.J.'s all over the world when he's not busy making excellent tracks like these."

"Cylobotnia is a bargain priced 8 track collaboration between, as you might guess, Cylob and Astrobotia...2 of Rephlex's most respected artists. It was during a 2 week tour of America last year that they decided to work together, and after much long distance file swapping this 8 track EP came into focus. Their styles complement each other very well, crunchy beats, hip hop gamelan, gongs and bells, surging strings and almost endless sonic details."

Catalog #: REPH 146CD
Repressed for the first time in a number of years. "Originally released on Out Records way back in 1978, Black Devil's Disco Club is an extremely rare disco masterpiece, an epic journey into the deepest electronic disco ... It's already whipped up a storm in the UK -- Hip dance bible Jockey Slut have made it their single of the month for March, and it's the most asked for record in Berwick Street's tastemaker shops. In other words there is a huge buzz about it. The record was discovered by Rephlex's own PP Roy for 20 pence at a car boot sale, and quickly found favour with friends Richard D. James and Luke Vibert. Keen as ever to share fantastic music, label co-founder Grant Wilson-Claridge has managed to secure the exclusive license for Rephlex, unwittingly beating Metro Area's Morgan Geist (a long time fan) to the snap. This version contains the other 2 tracks -- the poppy vocal tracks that didn't make the first release plus a great new remix by Kerrier District, (Luke Vibert), who's brilliant album was just released on Rephlex." Tracks: 'Timing Forget Timing', 'Timing Forget Timing (Kerrier District Remix)', 'We Never Fly Away Again'.

Artist: DMX KREW
Title: Wave:CD
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: 2CD
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: REPH 155CD
Compilation of Edward Upton/Ed DMX's (Computor Rockers, EDMX) finest work. This double CD is basically the "best of" the last three DMX Krew / The Collapse of the Wave Function LPs but with a couple of exclusive vocal versions of tracks that were instrumentals on the vinyl. Also included is a CD of "our most requested records" -- a kind of DMX Krew/Rephlex greatest hits, mostly edited a bit to make them better. Tracks from every DMX Krew release on Rephlex are included going back nine years! His newest album and pair of 7" singles: The Collapse Of The Wave Function is similar in spirit to some of the Arpanet releases, and reveals a deeper, more considered side to his production, featuring ambient and experimental tracks as well as quirkier dancefloor numbers. From easy listening for machines, to Minneapolis funk on painkillers, Wave offers slanted perspectives on music inspired by quantum physics and late-night dance attacks.

Artist: DMX KREW
Title: Collapse of the Wave Function
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: LP
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: REPH 155LP
"Collapse of the Wave Function is the new mini album from DMX Krew aka Ed Dmx. It's quite simply, different from anything else Ed has ever done before, but still recognisably DMX Krew. It's Music from the golden age of the future. This is an album based around the 'Copenhagen Interpretation' of quantum physics, which is to do with the dual wave/particle nature of reality. For instance electrons tend to act like waves and are 'smeared' out over all possible states until their location is measured. The act of making a measurement or 'observation' causes the wave function of the electron to decohere and it then occupies a particular point in spacetime. It isn't just that the electron could be in a number of places and you don't know until you look, experimental evidence has shown that, until you look, the electron really is every (possible) where. According to the Copenhagen Interpretation, any quantum system simultaneously occupies all possible states for that system until it is observed. Since we believe the quantum theory of matter to be true, and everything in the universe is made of matter (or antimatter) this holds for all systems on all scales, in fact the entire universe is a quantum system. Extrapolating from here, it is true to say that, until you remove it from its sleeve, place it on the platter and listen to it, the album you are holding in your hands contains every conceivable piece of music. Only the act of listening to the record causes the wave function of the music to collapse, allowing the listener to enjoy the mellifluous sounds therein. We believe we are the first to apply this principle to recorded sound and are therefore proud to be able to bring you an album of previously undreamed of uncertainty."

Title: Grime
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 156CD
Groundbreaking 2004 compilation, repressed! First major compilation of this breaking new UK underground scene. Post-drum'n'bass, way-post-UK-Garage, 'Grime' is intense and mindblowing. And no, Plasticman (one of the three featured artists here) is not from Canada. Features numerous tracks each from three of the main developing producers in this scene: Mark One, Plasticman and Slaughter Mob. "Grime. Sublow. Dubstep. It's Music. Different people call it different things, depending on when they discovered it. In the 80's, maybe it was House, Techno and Electro. In the 90's it was UK-G, Drum and Bass, Breaks or whatever. Now there are so many terms for it that the journalists can't pigeon-hole it any more. This is a good thing -- it's music. Moody music, multifunctional, multifaceted music created by Humans with Brains, Hearts, Machines & Electricity. Music that's great for dancing to in clubs, or submerging yourself within your headphones, your car, your home, wherever. It's instrumental dance music, but it's the perfect forum for the best MC's and vocalists. We at Rephlex call it Grime to publicize to the people at large, outside of the specialist world of its producers. The purists might debate the name, but while they do that, crews around the globe are uniting in this strong & fresh dance movement. In this age of Information Technology, people are able to easily find real quality that they actually want, without being spoon-fed compromised product. Now, it is a time of change and the soundtrack is Grime."

"This is K-Rock, i.e. Kelly Barnett's second E.P. for Rephlex after his New Deal EP two years ago. The EP is a collection of rough, cut and paste tracks taking in R and B and disco influences from K-Rock's collection of rare grooves and the grimey sound of the London pirate stations. The feeling of the EP is dark and dirty, with a tense nervous energy. As his graffiti tag states, K-rock, comes from the N5 borough of London. K-Rock started his professional raving career as a dancer for Baby Ford -- you can spot him spinning in the 'Children of the Revolution' video, a top 40 hit back in 1989. He's also released two records on Ed DMX's excellent Breakin records label."

The Bug is Kevin Martin of Techno Animal, Ice, God, Curse of the Golden Vampire. His album Pressure on Rephlex/Tigerbeat 606 was described as "an exhilarating mutant ragga/dancehall/techno mash up." "The Warrior Queen -- by day she's Annette, sweet and friendly and meek as a lamb but when she get's on stage and gets wild she's Warrior Queen. Warrior queen is an x-rated ruler and aims to conqueror in all her endeavours. Some men would like to make out they're dynamo in bed, tougher, faster, rougher stronger but the Warrior is here to dominate and take over, stand up for her rights and conquer men weak or strong. She's worked with the Bug on several radio sessions and countless Gigs across the UK. This is her first release with the Bug and she truly holds the crown as a champion for strong women everywhere. She was born and raised in St Catherines Spanish town, Jamaica. In the late nineties she cut the following tunes as Wendy Culture: Penthouse label --frenchcot produced by Donovan Germain with Steelie and cleevie wheeling dance on their label and on Shocking vibes -- still a rush me -- new style with producer Patrick Roberts. The tracks are x rated and bad as hell!!!!"

Title: Killing Sound
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: 2CD
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: REPH 159CD
A collection of 7" singles and previously-unreleased tracks from UK-based Kevin Martin's (The Bug) Razor X Productions, started in collaboration with The Rootsman. Features apocalyptic mashup ragga anthems from the classic Razor X 7" imprint, as well as a few exclusive tracks which all show the rougher side of this act. Killing Sound celebrates soundclash as urban warfare. Floorquake basslines, body breaking beats and a barrage of deafening electronics amplifies the noise of cultures clashing. Fusing ragga's obsession with sex and violence to punk's confrontational energy, this ear bashing blast of detonated breaks is a fired-up antidote to the glut of careerists clogging up the airwaves, and valiantly continues the dirty work begun by On-U-Sound, World Domination Enterprises, Public Image, Bad Brains et al. An unforgettable rush of sonic insanity and red level intensity, distorted bleeps, explosive beats and terrifying vocal performances provide the blueprint for a skullcrush party disenfranchised rockers can appreciate and reggae casualties can celebrate. From the initial, unforgettable homicidal anthem penned by He-Man, to the melancholic crooning of Studio One veteran Tony Tuff, from the Tiger-style sadism of Wayne Lonesome and the tongue-in-cheek fighting talk of Warrior Queen, the lesser known MCs give legendary mic chatters Cutty Ranks and Daddy Freddy a murderous run for their money in the verbal skills and lyrical chills department. Call it yardcore, bashment, mutant ragga or whatever -- these tracks rock hard and gleefully burn up the rule book.

2005 follow-up, repressed! Featuring Kode 9 /Loefah/Digital Mystikz. "Grime, dubstep, eightbar, sublow whatever....We're back here again but this is a new story. The artists we've chosen for our second Grime showcase have a paradigm shift in perspective from the world of angry grime MC's, instead of 'this is my reality of the world and I can't do anything about it except portray and repeat the anger', their stance doesn't accept the here and now as all there is. The artists involved evoke a quietly positive, mystical, dubwise, global sonic scavenging, anti-gun stance, change your perception and change around you is but a logical consequence, aggression carefully honed into a fine art. But don't let this talk fool you; the music they make is deep, and dark, it's a sound that's always moving forward, into unknown and possibly dangerous territories."

Title: Quantum Transposition
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 161CD
Quantum Transposition is Arpanet's second full-length release, and their first on Rephlex. Rumored to come out of the Dataphysix laboratory in Detroit, where the acclaimed and cult combo Dopplereffekt project resides, Arpanet is one of the strangest and most mysterious units of the contemporary electronic music scene. There are no interviews and hardly any live appearances. Nobody really knows who they are, and some suspect involvement in early Drexciya projects. A strange mixture of scientific and sexually explicit political allusion; highly eclectic and unusual. Sonic research in a similar field to Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin and Derrick May. If you are interested in electronic music, Detroit techno, or ambient/experimental music, this is truly essential, like all his other projects. A legendary musician.

Artist: BASTIEN, PIERRE
Title: Pop
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 162CD
Pierre Bastien is a French composer and multi-instrumentalist for dance companies, who built his own mechanical orchestra for musical accompaniment. This is his second release for Rephlex. Since 1987 he has focused on solo performances, sound installations, recordings and collaborations with such artists as video/film artist Pierrick Sorin and Karel Doing, Bauhausian string sculptor Jean Weinfeld, British singer and composer Robert Wyatt, fashion designer Issey Miyake, as well as performing in Pascal Comelade's Bel Canto Orquesta. Bastien played in some collective bands as well as with the Dominique Bagouet Dance Company, all the while literally building his own orchestra called Mecanium -- an ensemble of musical automatons constructed from meccano parts and activated by electro-motors, that perform with acoustic instruments from all over the world. As composer Michel F. Côté notes, "A composer's dream : a fail-safe orchestra at one's fingertips obeying ever so gently to his every command : a timeless sounding orchestra, both futuristic and slightly Dada, conjuring ancient traditions in its surprisingly sensuous music ...The musicians of his orchestra are machines. And the idea behind it is simple, efficient and poetic : to have traditional instruments (Chinese lute, Morrocan bendir, Javanese saron, koto, violin, sanza, etc.) played by a mechanical instrument made of meccano pieces and recycled turntable motors. These hybrid and self-playing sound sculptures perform a series of short pieces, charming and hypnotic." Bastien currently enjoys about 80 contributors to his orchestra, with shows and installations around the world.

Title: Chosen Lords
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 173CD
Throughout 2005, and with little fanfare, Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) released the Analord series of 12"s under the AFX moniker on his label Rephlex. In total, 41 tracks were released over a series of singles -- Analord Volumes 1-11. Each record went on to sell into five-figure quantities -- on vinyl format ONLY! The tracks were not available for download or on CD, making this a considerable sales achievement. For fans of Aphex Twin, it was an almost unprecedented bounty of new material in the gap since the 2001 double album, Drukqs, but many people who have abandoned their turntables will have remained unaware of this hive of activity. Now, Rephlex releases Chosen Lords: rather than release a triple CD featuring all 41 tracks, AFX himself has distilled the tunes into a cohesive album, as it was intended to be heard. Chosen Lords is, in fact, the first full album of new material from Richard D. James since Drukqs, and the word of mouth is that the tracks are among his very best classics. The style? As with most Richard D. James releases, it's hard to pin it down to any one genre. Largely recorded on Richard's private collection of analog synthesizers -- vintage, modern and home-made, the rhythms, melodies, harmonies, and even some subliminal lyrics have all evolved directly from the machines. One could say Chosen Lords is partly-inspired by NY electro, Chicago house and Detroit techno classics, but the album also stimulates the kind of "lucid dreaming" atmospherics found on Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Many people try to imitate Richard's sound, but he remains an unrivaled innovator when it comes to the emotional and musical depth and complexity of his tracks. Chosen Lords is Richard D. James at the peak of his powers, in the prime of life. Unmissable.

This is a cult remix of a classic song that has pleased crowds the world over for many years and finally the Rephlex aficionados have decided, and have been allowed, to share it with everyone. Emotionally charged and innovatively produced, it's a great tune for any environment, and here you will hear it embodied in rumbling, throbbing glory, matched with soaring vocals. The record is a collaboration between two highly acclaimed artists, a boy and a girl, from different countries -- but from the same nation... of Braindance! One is incredibly successful in his field of mathematics, ju jitsu, cookery and polka dancing and the other is a well-known and accomplished vocalist and performer, popular around the world. Spac Hand Luke is a symbol of rebelliousness -- an unconventional hero. This vinyl-only EP seems to be inspired by the current grime & dubstep scene but calls upon dancefloor & techno production and acid B-lines. It's a compelling patchwork of styles, guaranteed to rock a party. Three tracks roll in at 134-140 BPM -- perfect for mixing, plus a Miami bass bonus beat to round off, for you Headz out there. He has recorded under many aliases since then, most notably Wagon Christ, Plug, Ace of Clubs, Butler Kiev and also more recently as Amen Andrews and Kerrier District. Together with Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, he is noted for being a vital cornerstone in the triumvirate of braindance supremacy. Amen Andrews burst onto the scene in 2003 with five limited edition DJ test-pressing releases on Rephlex. With these he participated in Plug's classic drum and bass style, raving it up with a junglist cocktail shaker. The records sold like hot cakes on vinyl and, ever since, the label had been hounded for a CD release from this old school TV host. Well now it's here, a sample-frenzied assault akin to the work of legends like Soundmurderer, Remarc and Dillinja. The album kicks off with an ode to London by Spac Hand Luke, in an industrial R&B style. But don't be fooled... straight after that we're into dangerous territory with uptempo slammers such as "1 Shot Killer Pussy," "Multiple Stab Wounds" and "Murder." This action-packed rollercoaster ride is occasionally peppered with a hail of garage-style bullets, slower in pace but just as deadly. This album is only for the headstrong, but these b-boy bruisers still manage to stop the panic through crisp production and concise musical accuracy. An essential one to check for lovers of raga/drum & bass/hip-hop/dubstep.

The album Authorized Clinical Trials, to follow shortly, is already being praised by those who have been lucky enough to hear it. And a follow-up album has already been produced. Detroit's Sherard Ingram (aka Mystic Tribe) has released a number of solo singles and has worked with Carl Craig, Anthony Shakir and Kenny Dixon Jr. for Urban Tribe's first full length album on MoWax. He is best known for one of the all-time great Detroit techno classics, "Covert Action," which appeared on the legendary Retroactive imprint in 1990, to be reissued by Planet E in 2002. Prior to that, he's worked on one of Kirk DeGiorgio's New Electronica albums, all the way back to the beginning with Juan Atkins & NASA in 1987. Most people would recognize him today by his Drexciyan DJ Stingray moniker, as his electric sessions have entertained worldwide in recent years. Authorized Clinical Trials is aimed at both club DJs and bedroom scientists alike! This man has, time and again, proved himself as one of the godfathers of electronic dance music, while managing to maintain a sub-aqua profile to avoid distraction and dilution of his sound. All hail a substantial new member of the Rephlex family, who shows that electro doesn't have to be new school or retrodden and that techno doesn't have to be predictable and emotionless. Check!

Title: Recordings For Rephlex
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 181CD
This is Vienna-based sound artist Florian Hecker's first full-length release on the Rephlex label. Hecker has been working with computer music, independently and in collaboration with other artists such as: Farmers Manual, Russell Haswell, Shunichiro Okada, Peter Rehberg, Marcus Schmickler and Yasunao Tone since 1996. Hecker's works emphasize the connection of the most recent as well as the most historic developments in computer music, hard- and software. Often working closely together with software engineers and scientists, his recent productions incorporate psycho-acoustic effects disorientating the listener's spatial perception in live presentations and studio works. He has been working on sound pieces commissioned by visual artists Angela Bulloch, Carsten Höller, Florian Pumhösl and Cerith Wyn Evans. Together with Russell Haswell, he is currently working on a compact disc with material recorded early 2004 during their research with the UPIC system at the Centre for Composition of Music Iannis Xenakis (CCMIX) in Paris. The eight pieces on Recordings for Rephlex were completed between 2002 and 2004. Although individual pieces have been produced for different occasions, all the recordings share concepts of sound generation on various time scales, down to the smallest sound particles. Superimpositions of multiple audio layers were not applied.

Artist: VOAFOSE
Title: Voafose
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 182CD
Though not yet properly established as a solo artist, Jeremy Simmonds aka Voafose has remained a collaborator, background influence and spiritual advisor to artists such as Luke Vibert, AFX and Boymerang for years. This debut album release is an opportunity to properly represent his presence. Contained on the CD are a collection of ambient solutions and sonic curiosities, selected from a 20 year archive of material. Expect to hear explorations into the aural benefits of pitch instability, the textural artifacts of audio tape, audio strobing, vocal manipulations, as well as muzak-concrete and a few psychiatric realizations. The following instruments and ingredients are evident; Roland SH-101 and JX8P synthesizers, Fender Rhodes Mk 1 Stage Piano, various delay/reverberator/modulator units, modified tape recorder devices, feedback, music and voice captures from radio and television, famous clock bells, a World War I bomb casing and faulty plumbing. Voafose recording experiments started years before collaborative music -- from childhood experiments/playtime with discarded, hand-me-down tape recorders... capturing sounds from radio, TV, and the outside world through childhood ear-filtering. Many of these sounds appear in previous collaborative work and feature on the CD also -- either within part of the sound collage or individually as intervals between pieces (e.g. "Big Ben," composed from source material generated as far back as 1985). The aim of this album is to provide a mixture of atmosphericals, reflections, aural psychosis and comedy. It's also a chance for Rephlex to showcase someone they consider to be a master of timbre and sonic wit.

Title: Kerrier District 2
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $9.00
Catalog #: REPH 183CD
Electronic legend Luke Vibert comes through with his second release as Kerrier District. Vibert needs little introduction, with albums since 1993 on Rising High, MoWax, Planet Mu, Warp, Ninja and of course, Rephlex (co-producing the legendary Vibert Simmons odyssey with current label mate Jeremy Simmons, aka Voafose). He has recorded under many aliases since then, most notably Wagon Christ, Plug, Ace of Clubs, Butler Kiev and also more recently as Amen Andrews. Together with Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, he is noted for being a vital cornerstone in the triumvirate of braindance supremacy, and over the last couple of years he extensively toured the world getting himself a shithot reputation as a DJ. Vibert's original Kerrier District project was a disco house smash and the best-selling Rephlex release of 2004. If you haven't heard Kerrier District, it's a total contrast to the drum and bass sounds of Vibert's Amen Andrews work, being about as disco as house music can get with a tad bit of "funky" in there, too. You may recall his Kerrier remix of the 1978 Italo smash hit "Black Devil" -- well, these remixes, too, could very well be chart-bound. Kerrier District 2 taps this side of Vibert's extraordinary talent even further, but is basically just great music that rocks a party or puts a smile on your face, and you'd miss it if it wasn't in your collection. The new chart-friendly remixes are the kind of music that will appeal to all dance music fans for years to come. Remix artists include a version by Ceephax Acid Krew, the mega-talented acid master.

Label: REPHLEX (UK)

Catalog #: REPH 184CD
Detroit legend Urban Tribe aka Drexciyan DJ Stingray aka Sherard Ingram releases his third full-length, his second for the Rephlex label. Ingram is most famous for his early techno masterpiece, "Covert Action," on Carl Craig's Retroactive imprint. After releasing a number of singles solo, Ingram worked with Carl Craig, Anthony Shakir and Kenny Dixon, Jr. for Urban Tribe's first full-length album on MoWax. Most people would recognize him today by his "Drexciyan DJ Stingray" moniker, as his electric sessions have entertained audiences worldwide in recent years. Enthusiasts will have most recently enjoyed his contribution to Crème Organization's Tribute To Robert Moog CD, as well as the Rephlex promo 7" from the end of 2006 (which scored a 5/5 on Discogs.com). This man has, time and again, proved himself as one of the godfathers of electronic dance music, while managing to maintain a sub-aqua profile to avoid distraction and dilution of his sound. The first installment on Rephlex, his Authorized Clinical Trials album has been widely praised. Acceptable Side Effects picks up where the last release left off -- the tracks are electro/techno/hip-hop grooves, perhaps more diverse in style than his last foray but just as entertaining, if not more so.

Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 185CD
This is the second full-length release from UK's Ceephax: also known as Andy Jenkinson. Volume One encompasses an old school acid sensibility crossed with the energy and innovation of the famous "Universal Indicator" acid series, plus a melodic and moody experimental side that is revealed in his mellower moments. Following his debut remixes of Squarepusher's "Bioslate" on Rephlex in 1998, he has released a multitude of EPs and albums on a variety of labels (Breakin'/Firstcask/WeMe/Bug Klinik/Warp/Lo Recordings etc.) Volume One represents his first album since the highly acclaimed Exidy Tours in 2003, with a second installment to follow later in 2007. The style is techno/acid/house/drum and bass/experimental/ambient... basically all electronic/dance styles, i.e. braindance. Similar in style to his other recent releases, only better! In Jenkinson's hands the sound of the 303 has taken on a new and important role that has surpassed the lame and predictable offerings from the psy-trance and acid techno camps. With a nod towards yesterday's heroes from Detroit, Chicago, Holland and Germany, Ceephax pushes the acid sound to the limit, from one end of the sonic spectrum to the other. Pummeling technoid pounders, spazzed-out breakbeats and other assorted genre-defying experiments allow Jenkinson to smash the wonders of acid into those fortunate enough to witness his live performance.

Following his debut remixes of Squarepusher's Bioslate on Rephlex in 1998, he has released a multitude of EPs and albums on a variety of labels. Aleksi Perälä aka Ovuca aka Astrobotnia is from Finland, and this is his first full-length release under his real name. He has had many stand-out releases under his several aliases and has become a true cornerstone in the Rephlex stable since his first release with them in 1999. After crafting everything from electro drill n' bass, crazy 808 rave tracks, unhinged acid breakbeat, relaxing braindance, to soundtrack music for Finnish porn, Perälä now presents deep, dreamy tracks made from warm blankets of chords and toasted breaks with oodles of detail. Top tunes for any environment.

Artist: D'ARCANGELO
Title: Eksel
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: REPH 188CD
This is the third full-length release for Fabrizio and Marco D'Arcangelo on the Rephlex label. Since the British new wave invasion of the '80s, these two brothers were keen on embarking onto early experimental music through the aid of affordable samplers and PCs. From their early '90s ventures as members of Automatic Sound Unlimited with DJ Max Durante, to their incarnations as Centuria City, Automia Division and Monomorph, their music has shaped and divided the melodic edges of techno throughout the years. They have made live appearances at the Rephlex Rephresh headquarters, the London Scala, to electronic conventions from Zurich to Chicago. The aim behind Exsel is to gather the quintessence of the D'Arcangelo project over the last 10 years. This is a non-conventional work where melodies and retro-synths are surrounded by frantic rhythms, ecstatic harmonies and classic methodology. Despite a penchant for traditionalism, errata exists on this release, such as "Distant Sound Of Nothing More," a tribute to composer Lupi (1908-1971) and his theories on gravitational harmony. Also, "Irko" is an exceptionally experimental and frantic track characterized by a rhythmic crescendo. To sum it up, this is an album reflecting all peculiarities of the D'Arcangelo electronic project for old and new generations of braindancers.

Title: Rushup Edge
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: REPH 189CD
Rushup Edge is the debut album of new Rephlex artists, the UK's The Tuss, a dynamic duo discovered via intensive MySpace exploration by the A&R dept. Apparently touted by Planet Mu, XL Recordings, Record Makers and Ninjatune all at the same time, they eventually decided to sign with Rephlex for reasons of principle. The label is very excited to find an act with this degree of promise and hopes to be releasing even more work soon. The Tuss' official line seems inspired by the time FFRR signed Chicago house legend Lil Louis' smash hit French Kiss, even though they had no information about him at all at the time. The Tuss offers little biographical info as well, preferring to concentrate on their musical merits, which they describe as "braindance." Rephlex don't really mind too much, but hope to acquire some photographic evidence soon. This album features six tracks featuring a unique blend of head music and dance vibes, everything from classic techno to modern funk, gabba, ambient and classical influences. "Last Rushup" is a breakbeat-y machine with spooky pads, "Shiz Ko E" starts with tuff rhythms, segueing into Prince-y funk and tons of top claps. "Death Fuck" presents mental beats matched with double-speed hip-hop, and "Goodbye Rute" ends things on a mellow note. We'll leave the final word to the journalists, but suffice to say it's very lush music -- so get your ears 'round it!

Artist: DOPPLEREFFEKT
Title: Calabi Yau Space
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: REPH 191CD
This is Dopplereffekt's first release on Rephlex. Dopplereffekt are one of the more mysterious units of the contemporary electronic music scene: there are no interviews and hardly any live appearances. The composers hide behind strange German pseudonyms and the song titles and lyrics are in English and make up a strange mixture of scientific, sexually explicit and political allusions. Dopplereffekt's music is also highly eclectic and unusual. Forefathers Kraftwerk seem to be more than present in the music, but Dopplereffekt have developed their very own and highly influential sound aesthetic. Dopplereffekt are originally from Detroit, though some believe them to be now based in Europe. Critics claim their electro-style resembles that of Drexciya, and that they were indeed early members of that now-legendary outfit. This album is a perfect sequel to Linear Accelerator, their album release on International Deejay Gigolo in 2003, and accompanies this year's classic retrospective Gesamtkunstwerk on Clone. Musically, it follows a more ambient/soundscape/experimental/electronic course akin to Der Zyklus' Biometry project or even Arpanet's Quantum Transposition and Inertial Frame releases. Though some find Calabi-Yau Space more concept-driven, it is just as engaging and combines the science of sound with other fields of physics. After a few listens, you'll notice some similar themes running thru various tracks: the musical expression of physics and sonic equations the likes of which will scramble your brain.

Title: Rodulate
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: REPH 194CD
This is the second collaborative release by Vibert/Simmonds -- a legendary album of previously-unheard material from the Rephlex archives, produced by two of the label's favorite artists, both Cornishmen. Their debut album, Weirs, was released all the way back in 1993 and it remains a seminal masterpiece of that special era. Rodulate is a superbly entertaining collection of early classic material that has been zealously indulged by Rephlex aficionados for all these years, lovingly selected by the artists themselves. Luke Vibert is known for his work in many genres of music and has recorded under several different aliases, including The Ace Of Clubs, Amen Andrews, Kerrier District, Plug, Spac Hand Luke and Wagon Christ. He has released albums on Astralwerks, FFRR, Mo' Wax, Ninja Tune and Warp, among others, and has become known for his super-slick beat-making and positivism. Vibert originally became involved in electronic music through his interest in funk and hip-hop, as well as the environment of bedroom experimentalism associated with the swelling UK dance scene (circa '86-'92). Jeremy Simmonds aka Voafose, has remained a collaborator, background influence and spiritual advisor to Luke for years and released his debut solo album on Rephlex at the end of 2006; a collection of ambient solutions, sonic curiosities and psychiatric realizations. Jeremy's recording experiments started years before collaborative music -- from childhood experiments with discarded, hand-me-down tape recorders, capturing sounds from radio, TV and the outside world. He is now known as a master of sonic texture and timbre. Together, this duo assimilate such diverse elements as hip-hop, house, techno, jazz and musique concrète into a unique take on electronica. With the first album, they tweaked and kick-started a virtual insurrection in sound around the world, and Rodulate starts where that left off.

Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 195CD
This is the highly-anticipated debut full-length Rephlex release from Niagara Falls, NY-based braindancer Reid Dunn aka Wisp. After a track of his was confused with the mysterious The Tuss back in 2007, Rephlex did some further investigation of the artist known as Wisp, and it just so happened that he had a veritable vault of unreleased gems waiting to see the light of day. Rephlex (and many other fans) believes that Wisp is perhaps the most exciting signing for perhaps a decade. Anyone who went to The Glade festival in the UK in 2008 may have wondered how the first (unbilled) act of the day managed to instantly fill up a marquee -- the answer simply lies within the strength of the vibes in the music. And the hype has just been increasing since then, with Wisp playing to packed houses everywhere he goes and getting nearly 30,000 plays of The Shimmering Hour preview on his Myspace page. You don't have to be into dance music or electronica to dig this album; though if you are, there's definitely a rare treat in store. Quite simply, these are serious tunes for nice people, from and for a variety of situations, inspirations and moods. Driven by an obsession with all things mythological, Wisp has been melding the new and old sounds of beat-driven experimentation and bardic lore to offer up a distinct sound that stands out amidst the barrage of overly complex Futurism that electronic music is so often mired in. These are sweeping, breakneck-speed, fantasy-driven, imaginative and incredibly skilled tracks, influenced by everything from Tangerine Dream to J.R.R. Tolkien. With a healthy appreciation for the original purveyors of the braindance sound, and a love for digital production, Wisp has released numerous free albums online, and currently has a fan-run archive on the net of all his freely-available music. Having joined with the legendary Rephlex label only seems like a logical progression in the short history of this young producer from the isolated city of Niagara Falls. With one foot rooted in myth, and another in music, it is likely that this is only the beginning of the tale of Wisp.

Finland's Aleksi Perälä (Ovuco, Astrobotnia) releases quite a unique, atmospheric EP for Rephlex. There are lots of styles here, starting out with ambience, breaks and ragga/dubstep, becoming more melodic and gentle, but ending up funky, moody and minimal, exploring resonant frequencies and harmonics. There should be more modern electronic music that takes it this far.

Title: Multi Funk
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: REPH 202CD
The crown prince of electro funk is back! Dwayne Omarr has been in the shadows as a ghost writer, vocalist, and producer for many years, creating songs for many artists with major deals, even reaching number one on the charts in the U.S. He has, so far, generally preferred to remain behind the scenes... until now. Dwayne Omarr grew up in Boston and was first interviewed by Tom Bergeron and featured on the NBC program Superkids at age 14 for his ability to play multiple instruments. He studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and Berklee College of Music and is a member of ASCAP, with a personal catalog of over 300 songs. Dwayne Omarr is managed by businessman and music impresario, Cornell ("The Genie") Brown. In 1978, a young Dwayne Omarr traveled to New York with "Prince Charles" Alexander to record "Bush Beat" for the project known as Slyck on Solid Platinum Records, which was a highly successful cult single around the world. In 1982, Prince Charles introduced Dwayne Omarr to Maurice Starr, and they collaborated on another one of Omarr's classics This Party's Jam Packed, originally on Survivor Records. In 1984, Dwayne played bass, lead guitar, and performed background vocals on Prince Charles & The City Beat Band's Stone Killers album on Virgin Records. 1985 marked the release of Holy Rock featuring the cult-hit single "Save The Children." Dwayne Omarr also created an alter ego named Sir D and released the single Born To Be Free on Solid Platinum Records the same year. In 1986, Omarr produced the single Mr. Gigolo for Omarrs' Girls. In 1987, Omarr collaborated with Ralph Tresvant of New Edition, producing many unreleased projects and touring the U.S. and Japan. In 1988, Dwayne Omarr produced Suave's I'm Your Playmate, featuring the classic hit-single "My Girl" for Capital Records. In 1989, Omarr collaborated with singer Betty Wright and Luke Skywalker. That same year Omarr also collaborated with Cornell Brown on many projects, including the first Ralph Tresvant solo album and 4-Fun's The Unbelievable Fun Boys project on EastWest Records America. Omarr now links up with Rephlex to release the highly-anticipated Multi Funk album, an unashamed funk-rock R&B showcase featuring new tunes plus dub versions of favorites like "Save The Children," "Breakdown New York Style," "Mr. Gigolo," and others.

Artist: DMX KREW
Title: Wave Funk/Prolapse Of The Wave Function
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: 2CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: REPH 204CD
Evolving from where Collapse Of The Wave Function (REPH 155LP) and Wave Funk Vol. 1 vinyl EP left off, this is a wide variety of entertaining listening spanning the realms of electronic dance music. This is one CD of brand-new material + one CD of previously vinyl-only releases. 35 tracks in total. Ed DMX lives in London where he makes music and runs his label Breakin' Records. He also travels around DJing and performing live most weekends in different parts of the world. The first DMX Krew release was 1995's Got You On My Mind on Dutch label DAP, and this was followed in 1996 by Sound Of The Street on Aphex Twin's label Rephlex. This record hinted at what was to come with its mix of instrumental electro, synth-pop and techno made on vintage equipment. Lots more releases followed, mainly through Rephlex, but also on diverse labels including International Deejay Gigolos, Ersatz Audio, Sonic Groove and several others. DMX Krew remixes have also appeared of various artists including Gentle People, Biochip C, Denki Groove, Le Car and many others. In 1997, Ed DMX started his label Breakin' Records, which gained a cult following as one of the UK's first electro and bass labels with releases from DMX Krew and under the alias Computor Rockers, as well as first signings Bass Junkie, Mandroid and Ceephax Acid Crew. The last three albums and pair of 7" singles released on Rephlex under the umbrella of Collapse Of The Wave Function reveal a deeper, more considered side to his production, featuring ambient and experimental tracks as well as quirkier dancefloor fillers.

Artist: KENDRICK, JODEY
Title: Plus Ten
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: REPH 206EP
Rephlex hooked up with Jodey Kendrick after hearing some tracks from his debut CD on Napalm Enema. One might say it's very Drexciyan or Aphexy music, but that's because it's rooted in Rephlex's favorite genres of New York disco, Chicago house and Detroit techno, with a certain mystery something-special added. Careful use of microtuning and analog tweaking, combined with a very British pastoral quality, Jodey provides us with something pleasurable and original to listen to every time.

Artist: T.C.M.
Title: The Criminal Minds
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: 2CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: REPH 208CD
Rugged, raw, rapid and ruthless, like a British Public Enemy perhaps, UK hardcore hip-hop legends The Criminal Minds rank alongside legends of Britcore hip-hop such as Hijack, The Demon Boyz and Silvah Bullet. Their previous records are certainly among the rarest in the genre and their message not as widely heard, but that is about to change with the release of this compilation of their back catalog, associated projects and previously-unreleased tracks. "I remember walking into one of my local record shops in Wolverton, MK (I think it was called World Beats) and hearing this record playing. It had just come out and was by a local crew, it totally blew me away hearing that Darth Vader theme music over some raw drums and homegrown vocals. This was a buzz because it was people who lived near me, outside of London, making dope hip-hop and putting it on wax. The crew later moved into making rave/early jungle-style tracks like the classic 'Baptised By Dub'." --Evil Ed; Wanna get hold of their first two releases, on their own label? You'll be lucky to get change for $1,000! This release contains all those tracks plus 15 more and has been lovingly remastered to sound better than ever. DJ Halo and Chase 1 formed The Criminal Minds in 1985, and while at college, DJ Halo met Iceski, who would become lead emcee. Upon meeting another DJ called Spatts, they released their first EP entitled Guilty As Charged, funded by Halo selling his decks and the group, plus friends and family chipping in with some cash. Soon after, Safe D and CMD joined the group and they released Tales From The Wasteland, again, independently on their own label. Many tracks were recorded but not released in the following years. Current members include DJ Halo, DJ Spatts, MC Iceski and more.

Artist: MACC AND DGOHN
Title: Some Shit Saaink
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: REPH 209CD
This is the first full-length release by live drummer/producer John Cunnane dgoHn (pronounced "Jon") and audio engineer/producer Robert Macciochi aka Macc. Each of them has released a plethora of singles/EPs since '94/'95 on a multitude of labels including Subtle Audio, Inperspective, Alphacut, Subvert Central, Offshore, Transmute, Outsider, Syncopathic, Breakin, 13 Music, Counter Intelligence, Plain Productions, Exegene and SC Digital. This is the first major album to be unleashed; much more in the vein of Squarepusher and Billy Cobham, Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, etc., than the more common all-electronic epic dark rinsers/vocal stabbidge, etc. Tight and solid but laden with atmosphere. Some Shit Saaink echoes a current popular focus on the predecessors of modern dance music, but with the freedom and vibes of early pioneers like LTJ Bukem or Remarc, and with the slickness, modernity and occasional brutality of 2010. A release that continues to prove that there is still something new to be heard in electronic dance music, especially the so-called "drum and bass" genre, or even that of jazz fusion.

Artist: MONOLITH
Title: Volume 1
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: REPH 210EP
Widely heralded on message boards as one of the best electronic/dance records of the year. Also rumored (incorrectly, as so often is the case with Rephlex releases) to be the work of Aphex Twin. Whether it is the irresistible disco house anthem of "F-Tron," the catchy electro of "Vigton," the storming braindance of "Syphonic Flash" or the stripped-down, dubby "22 Livingtones," this EP is bound to entertain across the board, having been tried and tested on dubplate at countless gigs.

Artist: STEINVORD
Title: Steinvord
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: REPH 212EP
Rephlex knows virtually nothing about this artist. They discovered him via internet forum rumors. They know his name but are not allowed to disclose it. His location may possibly be Europe. They think he probably makes music using a computer, but they're not sure. They don't think he's released anything before. One might say that it has elements of electroacoustic sound sculpture colliding with fierce drum and bass rhythms. It's atmospheric future music, available on retro vinyl only for the foreseeable future.

Artist: ZWISCHENWELT
Title: Paranormale Aktivitat
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: REPH 214CD
An international trio of female artists making icy techno-pop inspired by parapsychology, aided and abetted by Heinrich Mueller of Drexciya and Dopplereffekt. Rephlex's biggest crossover album for some time, this record will find favor as much amongst fans of the current crop of cold wave and nu-goths such as Zola Jesus etc., old goth chanteuses such as Nico, as well as Detroit electro heads and fans of early Mute Records electronics. Zwischenwelt explore the field of parapsychology with a dark and twisted vision of cold wave electronics. Parapsychology investigates paranormal psychic abilities using scientific methods, such as used in traditional psychology (observation, survey etc.) and quantitative empirical methodologies such as used in sociology, psychology and pedagogy. Parapsychological phenomenon are often also called Psi-Phenomenon. The two main fields of parapsychological research are Psychokinesis, the ability of the mind to influence objects without involvement of currently known physical energies and without physical contact between the acting subject and the reacting object (for example, telekinesis and psychic healing) and Extrasensory Perception (ESP), the ability to acquire information by (psychic) sources currently unexplained by science (best-known examples are clairvoyance, precognition and telepathy). It is this field that the group Zwischenwelt (German for "in-between world") look to discover. Combining the talents of former Drexciya member Heinrich Mueller, New York DJ/producer Susana Correia, Spanish producer Penelope Lopez and vocalist Beta Evers (who operates a number of German labels, including Kommando 6), Zwischenwelt's Paranormale Aktivitat was created largely through the passing of parts back and forth across the web. The opening "Apparition" starts with an ethereal, ghost-like feel that permeates this haunting electronic encounter while "Clairvoyant" pairs a stripped-down electro beat to distant echoes of melody in a half-remembered state. Tracks such as "Enigmata" and "Telekinesis" add a strange swing to the avant-garde approach while "Diapsiquia" and "Materialization" are eerie cinematic moodscapes that push the group's experimental reach. Finally, the pulsating rhythm of "Telemetric" is perhaps the most obvious electro-power surge for the dancefloor.

Artist: MONOLITH, DAVE
Title: Welcome
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: REPH 216CD
Rephlex presents a stellar, forward-thinking debut album from Dave Monolith. Since the launch of their exclusive, independent online music store, Monolith has been the most discussed, downloaded artist of the whole roster and yet he is totally new on the scene and relatively unknown. Judging from public reaction, the label thinks it's about time that quality instrumental electronic music had a loud shout in the public domain and this is the perfect candidate; monolithic in name and nature. Monolith aka David Paul Barnard lives in the Wiltshire countryside and contexualizes his music as such: "My musical interest developed, which was my first attempt at music production. This record is essentially a compilation album. I only make individual tracks in different styles, so ultimately, the record had to be compiled into a coherent selection of music. I think this has been done successfully by Rephlex. My ambition is to make my next best track, to keep doing what I want to do, to travel to different places, and to be able to draw a crowd every now and then. I hope I can inspire people as I have been inspired by others myself, to bring other individuals as much enjoyment as my music brings me. The strongest elements of my tracks often have a disjointed pop sensibility -- this is something I aim for." Notable influences for this album include: Aphex Twin, Aleksi Perälä, Bruce Haack, David Vorhaus, Delia Derbyshire, Dopplereffekt, Drexciya, Enya, Jean Michel Jarre, Luke Vibert, The Other People Place, The Tuss and Warp 9.

Artist: NEW ORDER
Title: Acid House Mixes by 808 State (1988)
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $8.00
Catalog #: REPH 806EP
Previously unreleased remixes from 1988 by Graham Massey, Gerald Simpson and Martin Price! Never really intended as a proper release, but now finally made available. Features 808 State remixes of "Blue Monday" and "Confusion". "Originally recorded for 808 State's live performances in Manchester during the early days of acid house, these two versions of the classic New Order tracks were dug up from the vaults and are now available on vinyl for the first time ever. Apart from being lost acid classics, the tracks provide a glimpse into the burgeoning acid house scene in its earliest days, of which Graham Massey says 'They were staples because they were easy to programme, and they bought you an extra ten minutes before you got bottled off. There was a lot of hostility to what we were doing early on. Change will always do that."

Artist: 808 STATE
Title: Prebuild
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: REPH 807CD
First ever issue of some lost tapes from the beginnings of the UK's love affair with house music; a time of incredible invention is documented on these tapes, made available here for the first time. Recordings made circa 1987-88. 808 State were central to the roots of Acid House in the UK and Rephlex has previously reissued their debut album (Newbuild, originally issued in 1988 -- an album hailed by the likes of Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and Luke Vibert, as one of the most influential records of all time). Now they've gone back even further!

"Talking with 808 State's Graham Massey about Newbuild's Mutant Prehistory, the Bunker Archaeology of Acid House and the Dangers of Electrocution on the Manchester Party Scene from 1987-1988. Only machines can do things in precise sequence. People and circumstances tend to be a whole lot messier, which is when things start to get interesting. Technology becomes destiny. The rest, as they say, is history, and who knows where that comes from? 'From a personal viewpoint, I always saw the Acid stuff as an imitative first step towards finding an identity in electronic music,' Massey remarks of the recordings in this collection. 'Because of its limitations, it became an established form of music pretty quickly: anything with a 303 on it could sound like Acid. Once you had the machinery to do it, which we discovered we already did, it wasn't hard to make Acid House.'

Wind the tape back to around '87/'88, and the machines are there. Hip Hop is a powerful carrier signal on Manchester's dance music scene. Electro is aligning the sound of the Roland 808 drum machine with the glittering promise of the future. 'The 808 had such a history before the British dance music revolution, mostly in soul music, I guess. It had connotations.' The Roland 303 Bass Line had also been around for some time before '88. However, the minute you knew it was the 303 being used on Acid records you pulled it out of the cupboard and started using it again. 'We knew we were copying American music, but often what we heard on Acid Trax compilations and dance imports didn't hit the mark. The charm of a decent Acid record didn't necessarily happen every time. There was maybe one in ten that really rocked, and it was almost accidental that a track was successful. The formula was there, and we knew that we weren't coming up with anything new when we started to make Acid records. It was more the urge to take it over the edge and do that transcending thing with it.'

Prebuild follows that line of transcendence, comprising studio recordings from the period, a reel-to-reel of a radio session jammed live on air, a clutch of demos recorded by Gerald Simpson in his bedroom and a cassette of the first ever 808 State performance. An ecstatically extended fourteen-minute workout that took place at the end of a Hip Hop night at The Boardwalk Club, 'Thermo Kings' is a glistening wall of radioactive sludge, the sound of industrial waste undergoing a profound chemical change. This volatile first rush of activity was probably over within a few months, but in that period, 808 State cracked the Acid code, laid down a methodology and shifted the number of beats per minute, unleashing tracks like the fearsome 'C.I.S.' and 'K.Narcossa' on Stu Allen's radio show or dropping twenty-minute tapes into sets at the Hacienda or at warehouse parties. 'I think you have to take into account that there's a certain amount of automatic writing with that kind of technology,' Massey recalls. 'It's trial and error a lot of the time. You'd only press the record button when it was happening.' Now press rewind and play." -- Ken Hollings, London 2004.

Title: Quadrastate
Label: REPHLEX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: REPH 808CD
This is a reissue of 808 State's 1989 release, Quadrastate, plus bonus tracks. Formed in 1988, members of 808 State at this point included Graham Massey, Andrew Barker, Darren Partington, (A Guy Called) Gerald Simpson and (Eastern Bloc Records Founder) Martin Price. The band's rare debut single from '88, "Let Yourself Go/Deepville" is included on this album, together with the inclusion of some other previously-unreleased alternate versions and outtakes. It's the first time ever that these tracks have been released on CD and the entire project has been lovingly remastered, to the customary Rephlex high standards. Quadrastate completes the popular re-release trilogy on Rephlex, which also included the highly-acclaimed Newbuild and Prebuild albums (and was accompanied by the successful "Acid House Mixes" by New Order). Originally released on Creed Records, these recordings were born in Manchester in the months after the second Summer of Love, in 1988/1989. These tracks were hugely influential to the popular electronic dance music explosion that soon followed all around the world. This is the album where we originally heard the international hit song, "Pacific." As with many producer teams, the combination of influences and characteristics is what makes the sound unique. Quadrastate still has a fresh sound; incredibly bouncy bass lines, pioneering use of breakbeats and all the energy and inspiration of analog-digital-hybrid jams.
