"Led by respected avant-garde musician Joseph Byrd, The United States Of America was a seething, fiercely experimental blend of Pink Floyd, John Cage and The Velvet Underground, tempered by the icy yet lovely vocals of Dorothy Moskowitz. Here are two previously unissued versions of works-in-progress, both cut live in the studio by this seminal psychedelic combo that also featured violinist Gordon Marron, bassist Rand Forbes and drummer Craig Woodson. 'Hard Coming Love,' raw and rocking here, would become a highlight of the band's only album. The originally-unissued 'Osamu's Birthday' -- whose eerie vocal track was sung phonetically backwards by Moskowitz, then reversed for other-worldly effect -- is sung here by Moskowitz... forwards. "Arthur Lee's seminal work as leader of the '60s band Love is treasured by discerning rock fans around the world. Lee's status as one of his era's preeminent musical cult heroes has grown immensely in recent years, leading to generations of new fans rediscovering the artist's remarkable catalog. Unfortunately, Lee and the band's body of available recordings is relatively small, making Sundazed Music's release of a previously-unheard full-length vintage Arthur Lee and Love album a major musical event. Love Lost was recorded in 1971, during a brief, little-known period during which Love was signed to Columbia Records. Lee and the then-current Love lineup -- bassist Frank Fayad, guitarist Craig Tarwater and drummer Don Poncher -- recorded an album's worth of new material for the label. But after the band left the company, the recordings sat unreleased and unheard until now. The material on Love Lost -- comprised of the unreleased Columbia sessions, plus five unreleased acoustic demos from the same period -- captures Love in a transitional phase, charting the next step in Lee's idiosyncratic musical trajectory, following the lush garage-psychedelia of the classics Da Capo and Forever Changes, and the bluesier direction of the hard-rocking False Start and Out Here. "Traffic was one of the most original and influential British groups of the 1960s, gathering a diverse set of individual talents in vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Steve Winwood, singer/guitarist Dave Mason, drummer Jim Capaldi and reeds player Chris Wood. "Just turned 21 and beautiful beyond words, Wanda Jackson ripped through a red-hot, live Town Hall Party rockabilly session in 1958 that helped define the parameters of this raw, young music. Discovered singing on an Oklahoma radio station only two years earlier by honky-tonk recording star, Hank Thompson and encouraged to cut loose musically by genre superstar/touring partner (and one-time boyfriend) Elvis Presley, Jackson was a perfect fit for Town Hall Party, the Los Angeles-based TV show that had already welcomed sets by rockin' luminaries Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins and Eddie Cochran. Backed by old friend and 'King of the Strings' guitarist Joe Maphis, Jackson was in her element for the Town Hall Party session, tearing into 'Mean, Mean Man,' a career-defining tune she'd recorded only a few months earlier. Highlights of Jackson's set also include 'Rock Your Baby,' her current Capitol Records single, and 'Alone (With You),' a Faron Young chart-topper, as well as her show-stopping finale, Jackson roaring through 'Hard Headed Woman,' a scorcher from Elvis' current movie, King Creole. Jackson would soon become a substantial force on the country music charts, specializing in aching, honky-tonk ballads for the rest of her career. "In 1965, the Preachers were as wild as it comes, both in image and sound. Despite their long haired/holier than thou hybrid look, this L.A. fivesome didn't preach so much as howl a hi-octane punk-blues for the Sunset Strip set. Their greatest moment remains 'Who Do You Love,' an insanely intense reading by the group's original teenage wildman, Richard Fortunato. Moonglow Records canned him for being too uncommercial, which just means he's one of our favorites. The Preachers tried riding the folk-rock wave but thankfully, they always come out sounding like the Preachers. Their previously-unheard 'Hey Joe' is a thrilling folk-rock failure full of improvised words and the most nasally vocalizing this side of the Seeds. Moonglow Records hated this one too, which just means you gotta hear it. It's our turn to preach about these garage heroes, so we've also included their classic 'Stay Out of My World.'"
