Artist: VON TREYER, XAVER
Title: The Torino Scale
Label: SUPERSOUL RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: SSREC 002CD
The Torino Scale is the debut solo album from Berlin-based producer and Supersoul Recordings head Xaver von Treyer, aka Xaver Naudascher. The result is astral pop music that swirls around the idea of beginnings, ends and aggregate states, while staying true to the known Supersoul sound -- strong connections to dance music (Krautrock, Italo, Chicago and Detroit) without being nostalgic or exclusive to one style. Every track has a strong identity of its own, showcasing the artist's personal take on modern pop music, ranging from psychedelic pop to acid via ambient cinematic themes. The album was recorded and mixed in three stages in Berlin, the second half in wooded seclusion just outside the city center. In keeping with the overall theme, characters are introduced and whisked away with regularity, an eclectic blend drawn from all corners of the globe. Arthur Hornig, the first cellist for the Deutsche Staatoper, contributes to two tracks, while Wolfram (aka Diskokaine) provided vocal snippets for the intricate grooves of "Love Is A Drum" from his hotel room and Jayney Klimek (a friend from the Terranova era) completes the mantra. London-based folk-singer Nana Kay adds layers of heightened sensuality with her vocal contribution to the skulking "We Are Alien." A collaborator with Xaver for over a decade, Japanese singer Yuko Matsuyama covers the whistle-led skittering pop of "Lunar Rover" in sultry poise. The most significant contribution, however, comes from Marek Polewski, creative director at Supersoul Recordings, with his input into the visual accompaniment for the album. Images in motion form the conceptual basis, the underlying principle being a fine balance struck between the images and sounds -- no hierarchy.

Artist: STRANGELETS
Title: Riot On Planet 10
Label: SUPERSOUL RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: SSREC 002EP
"The latest Supersoul Recordings release is a space disco excursion by Xaver Naudascher and Sebo K (of Mobilee Records fame) featuring pounding rock-disco drums, kraut-funk basslines, out-of-control synths, percussion orgies, before-the-storm cpu strings and a devious hookline bound to infiltrate your ear canal like a malfunctioning surgical nanobot. Looking ahead with an acknowledging nod to the past, Sebo K and Xaver Naudascher create an atmospheric and driving piece of modern club electronica with all the elements to take control over a dancefloor. In the remixing hands of Tiny Sticks label-chief Mock & Toof the track turns into a psychedelic trip across a rugged lunar landscape, a bassline-heavy journey with moments of peace that are interrupted by the warped synthlines from the original. As for his remixes for DFA and Hot Chip the very talented young Brit delivers high-profile loose electronic dancefloor material once again. The mysterious Blitz Gramsci (porn-name alter ego of a former Italo-disco producer, who now test-drives for an Italian supercar manufacturer and is not fond of sharing his real identity) delivers a sequencer driven version that makes you want to jump into a V8 muscle car and drift non-stop all the way across the Death Valley."

Artist: SKATEBARD
Title: Marimba/Pagans
Label: SUPERSOUL RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: SSREC 005EP
"'Before the Gods had names, Scandinavian pagans of the bronze age worshipped the sun and other spirits in nature. It was a warm and colorful era after the long and cold Ice Age.' That's what Bård Aasen Lødemel aka Skatebård tells us about his unholy blend of Detroit-ish techno and Bobby-O style synthesizer disco he displays in his track 'Pagans,' featured on the latest Supersoul Recordings release. He should know, because coming from a small village on the west coast of Norway due to the absence of nearby raves and clubs, he would wander, dance and run through the forests only accompanied by his trusted Walkman and the spirits of the Scandinavian nature. 'Marimba' is a midtempo deep house cut for early mornings after long awake nights, which features old-school rhythm machines, lush synths and 12-bit floating point panpipe samples."

Artist: MOGG & NAUDASCHER
Title: Moon Unit (Parts 3 & 4)
Label: SUPERSOUL RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: SSREC 006EP
"Textural electronic sequences, live instrumentation and articulated beats melded perfectly with sophisticated melodic hooks: Moon Unit (Part 3 & 4) has arrived! 'Part 3' could best be described as being the black monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey draped with highly sophisticated light installations, oversized speakers and a giant smoke machine. It features the relentless sequencing, trademark of Mogg & Naudascher's productions, paired with muscular cello riffs played by Arthur Hornig, who represents a new breed of classical musicians, fearless of mingling with dancefloor compatible music. 'Part 4' features Irish newcomer Rosalind on vocals. It is part meditation, part nursery rhyme, the repetition of a simplistic lyrical motif combined with a huskily robust lead vocal, an elixir to the ear of the listener. The track resolves the dichotomy between being both soundscape, undulating dark and volatile, and popular song. The dynamics peak and trough, culminating in a fugato vocal arrangement, referencing the experimental edge of Laurie Anderson's 'O Superman' and the glacial austere beauty of Julie Cruise on Angelo Badalamenti's Twin Peaks theme 'Falling.' Throughout the whole release various specific punctuation points raise the noise to ecstatic levels, in the manner to which fans have become accustomed ever since the critically acclaimed Moon Unit (Part 1 & 2) hit decks all around the world in 2007, receiving massive support by Carl Cox, DJ 3000 (UR), Laurent Garnier, Klaxons (who licensed Part 1 for their Bugged Out DJ mix), DFA and many more."

Artist: JONES, WALTER
Title: All God's Children
Label: SUPERSOUL RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: SSREC 007EP
"All God's Children" is a legendary track, originally released in 2003. The original is 17:37 minutes of pure deep-house with driving percussion, a classic house groove, lush keyboard work and an easy bass line. The B-side sports two remixes of "Anything Is Possible." Supersoul boss Xaver Naudascher is faithful to the original, adding a disco-tainted take on early Chicago house. The Filiberto Marmelade (Fabrizio Mammarella, Phillip Lauer) remix turns the track into a psychedelic piano-house jam with a highly-addictive hook.

Artist: PLASTIQUE DE REVE
Title: Lost In The City
Label: SUPERSOUL RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: SSREC 008EP
Supersoul Recordings presents two remixes of Plastique De Rêve's "Lost In The City." 40 Thieves take it into another dimension by dropping the vocal, slowing the track down a notch, and adding a mesmerizing soundscape to the acidic elements of the original. Pure liquid gold for big dancefloors or sleazy disco joints. The Juan MacLean present an energized, tough cut. Rife with stabby synthesizers and clean drum sequences, the intensity erupts into a psychedelic trip backed by a jacking groove.

Artist: TELLIER, SEBASTIEN
Title: Reworked By Strangelets
Label: SUPERSOUL RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: SSREC 010EP
This material stems from Sebastien Tellier's highly-acclaimed and successful album Sexuality, originally produced by one half of Daft Punk, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. Strangelets (David Ducaruge and Xaver Naudascher) were given several tracks to remix. "Kilometer" contains massive jazzy synths, snappy bongos, and locomotive drums for a futuristic, space-funk cut. "Sexual Sportswear" is awash with ghostly background noises that conjure up thoughts of Dario Argento movie scores. This record, in all its eerie grandeur, is amazing.

Artist: MOON UNIT
Title: Connections
Label: SUPERSOUL RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: SSREC 011EP
Supersoul Recordings presents a moody treat by Berlin-based group Moon Unit. "Connections" is a pitched-down, sexy number that incorporates bursts of synthesizer that pierce your heart, organic-sounding drums, warm chord progressions, and enchanting vocals that all meet in the middle to form an intimate musical symbiosis. Ewan Pearson's version is tough, but maintains a sensual undercurrent, creating a hybrid that lingers between darkness and warmth. Acidic twists and harmonic turns hit from all angles as you enter mysterious electronic passageways.

Artist: GRACKLE
Title: Desert Acid
Label: SUPERSOUL RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: SSREC 012EP
William Burnett (aka Grackle) delivers an EP that evokes images of mad peyote sessions held amidst dry and sandy landscapes. The original "Desert Acid" features a wobbly, acidic synth-line, fuzzy guitar riffs, and an almost tribal disco-beat. Musiccargo rework it into a Krautdisco gem that floats on a loopy vibraphone drone, and Sombrero Galaxy (aka DJ Tako Reyenga and Jonny Nash) take it into cosmic realms ala Vangelis. "We Are It" is a slow 808 jam with druggy vocals and guitars.

Artist: BLACKSTROBE
Title: Back From Beyond
Label: SUPERSOUL RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: SSREC 013EP
Blackstrobe are Back From Beyond. These dancefloor gems are a foray back into the darkest realms of disco with a unique blend of boogie-trance, soft-goth, and gay-biker house music. The title track's pulsating, arpeggiated bass, the kicking four-on-the-floor and the distorted Italo synth make this track plump for peak-time. The introverted vibe of "Demonstration Track" serves as counterpoint to the darkroom atmosphere with eerie synth riffs, string-machines and a suggestive vocal that is rounded off with a Detroit beatdown groove.

Artist: DEN HAAN
Title: De Brandende Haan EP
Label: SUPERSOUL RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: SSREC 014EP
Den Haan is a slice of hi-NRG/Italo-fueled dancefloor madness. Playing "Burning Cock Theme" in a techno club is what separates DJs from fashion victims. Ridiculously camp yet simply irresistible. "Increase The Beast" is an extended edit of the most effective DJ weapon ever. Animal noise followed by a 4/4 kick with timpani and male whoohaas. "Afterburner" is an edit of their digital-release exclusive cover version of the Dutch classic "Burn It Up (Mr. DJ)." A vocoder-ridden stomper with anthemic traits.

Artist: VON TREYER, XAVER
Title: Soul Boy Themes Reworked
Label: SUPERSOUL RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $14.00

Xaver Von Treyer's score is full of kalimbas and guitars, backed by heavy orchestral drumming and floating e-bows. Also features remixes by Moguh, Roberto Auser and Django Django. Limited to 300 copies, sleeve hand-screenprinted in animal's blood.
