TEMPA 003CD
Horsepower Productions
' second full-length album, originally released in 2004 on the Tempa label.
To The Rescue
sees the crew expand their grime/UK garage/dubstep palate for an eclectic, insouciant, dub/two-step glitch journey. These tracks defy generic dance stereotypes, with plenty of random samples, shadowy vocal snippets, horns, crickets, looped guitar, and of course, deep, menacing sub-bass to act as mortar to the diverse elements. This record, in addition to their debut was and continues to be a huge influence on dubstep producers such as
Skream
,
Benga
,
Digital Mystikz
,
Kode 9
and countless others. Get your hands on a classic and understand the deepest roots of dubstep, garage and beyond. Includes a remix by

2011 repress, originally released in 2006; this is the fourth volume in Tempa's
Dubstep Allstars
series, mixed by
DJ Hatcha
and
DJ Youngsta
.
Dubstep Allstars Vol. 04
presents a clash between two of the most influential dubstep DJs. Taking one CD each, these dubplate masters present the finest in upfront beats. From
Skream
to
Digital Mystikz
,
Loefah
to
D1
, these are the freshest sounds to come out of the London dubstep scene in 2006. Croydon-based Hatcha began DJing back while it was all UK garage and witnessed the birth of dubstep circa 2000. But it was as Forward>> resident in around 2003 that he personally changed the course of the dubstep sound, ushering in a new era with his exclusive dubplate selection. Also a Forward>> resident, Youngsta's sound really coalesced early in 2005, when his ultra-dark, skunked out "halfstep" dubstep defied dancefloor expectations and smothered headz in dread bass. His pinpoint sharp mixing and visionary selection marked him out as a master DJ. Together, Hatcha and Youngsta are a formidable force and
Dubstep Allstars Vol. 04
sees them in heavyweight form, from dub skankers to bass wobblers, dark halfsteppers to percussive rump shakers, bass is in the space. Other artists include:

The Roots of Dubstep
Label:
TEMPA (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
TEMPA 007CD
Originally released in 2006. After six years of underground incubation, 2006 was the year dubstep blew up, taking this fresh south London sound and exploding it worldwide. Elevated by anthems such as
Skream
's "Midnight Request Line" and
Digital Mystikz
' "Neverland," the scene has witnessed high profile showcases on Radio 1 and rammed club nights like DMZ and Forward>>. The explosion of interest in the sound left many stunned new fans asking "where did dubstep come from?" The first compilation of its kind,
The Roots Of Dubstep
is the only compilation to definitively document the early years of dubstep. Lost white labels and overlooked gems, dusty dubplates and unreleased underground classics have been tracked down and put together into the definitive early dubstep document. The album captures all the founders of the dubstep scene at their creative peaks, from
El-B
to
Zed Bias
,
Steve Gurley
to
Horsepower Productions
,
Skream
,
Benga
,
Artwork
and more. It features two unreleased anthems, the original mix of El-B featuring
MC Juiceman
's "Buck & Bury," and Benga's "Star Wars," familiar to fans as both dubstep pioneer
DJ Hatcha
's signature tune and the dubplate no one thought would ever see the light of day. The compilation was co-A&R'ed by Ammunition Promotions (the organization who gave birth to the very name dubstep, promoters of the scene's original night Forward>>, and owners of the deeper-than-deep Tempa label) and journalist/producer

Format:

Price:

TEMPA 008CD
2011 repress, now in jewel case. This is the debut album from
Skream
, Croydon's musical wonderkid. At 15 he discovered making music, and 5 years after, he helped to change the course of UK urban music, building the foundations of dubstep, the UK's most talked-about musical genre. Skream's clipped, techy minimal style has quickly become his trademark. Long before grime existed, it reflected dark, murky streets and sinister nights, the sound of decaying London and its frustrated communities, stuck out in satellite towns and sink estates with nothing but a PC and freely-available software to channel their frustration into. His signature tune, the scene's anthem "Midnight Request Line" is an explosion of electro arpeggios and dub sub-bass. It's a tune you can sing along to. From the opening haunting strings of "Tortured Soul," which calls to mind the work of
Philip Glass
or
Aphex Twin
, to the more optimistic chords and guitar of "Dutch Flowerz," to the heavy vocal cuts featuring
Warrior Queen
and
JME
, and the heavy digi-sounds of "Auto-Dub," it's clear that this is a sonic visionary at work.

Catalog #:
TEMPA 009CD
Originally released in 2007, this is the fifth volume in Tempa's
Dubstep Allstars
series, mixed by
N-Type
. From the compilation series that brought the scene its very name, Tempa presents the freshest snapshot of exactly what's happening in dubstep right now. This time, FWD>> resident, Rinse FM chatterbox and worldwide dancefloor destroyer N-Type has been drafted in to carry the torch for the fifth leg of the series which is widely recognized as the "must-have" dubstep compilation series. Combining hyperactive, rapid-fire mixing with searing white-hot, off-the-press-selection, N-Type's DJing embodies over almost a decade of dedicated bedroom-based service to the urban trinity of jungle, hip-hop and garage. Taking his cues from the likes of the legendary
EZ
, and mixing with the speed of
Jeff Mills
, N-Type relishes every opportunity to show off the dancefloor potential of the dubstep sound. Bangers from leading lights of dubstep including
Coki
,
Skream
and
Benga
sit alongside devastating sonics from a handful of the lesser-known dubplate souljahs that are tirelessly forging their place in sub-bass history. Other artists include:

BENGA
Title:
Diary of an Afro Warrior
Label:
TEMPA (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
TEMPA 010CD
This is the second full-length release by the UK's
Benga
. One of the original dubstep pioneers, Benga's
Diary of an Afro Warrior
is one of the most highly-anticipated albums of the year. If
Burial
's
Untrue
dominated 2007's end-of-year critics charts, then it's odds on
Diary of an Afro Warrior
will do the same in 2008. Dubstep's trickle into the mainstream has been steady;
Skream
and Burial alike have nudged the door open. Benga is undoubtedly the force to smash it through and take dubstep to another level. "Night," the anthemic underground smash track lifted from the album has literally had ravers from countless club scenes, DJs and grandparents whistling and humming its infectious melody for months now. In addition to becoming the first dubstep record to be playlisted on BBC Radio 1,
Night
represented Benga's tipping point for many DJs and music lovers across the globe, including
Gilles Peterson
,
Ricardo Villalobos
,
Pete Tong
,
Zane Lowe
,
Annie Mac
,
Herve
,
Shy FX
and many others, regardless of genre. So we know how well "Night" has been received, can we say the same of the album? Once the journey begins, it is clear what all the fuss is about, neither relying on incessant wobbling bass lines to grab attention nor sailing toward the "coffee table" banner, Benga has managed to create an album with duality. For times when your ear is keen and your speakers are of the
Bang & Olufsen
ilk, the intelligence and quality of production shines through. The superb dance-ability, grooves and emotions remain present on even the tinniest of speakers. Herein lies Benga's massive crossover appeal. Much more than just a straight dubstep album, the tracks on
Diary...
have been favorably compared to such names as
Carl Craig
,
Underground Resistance
,
Reprazent
and
Massive Attack
. Vinyl version contains significantly different track line-up, with five tracks not found on the CD.

Dubstep Allstars Vol. 06
Label:

Format:

Price:

Catalog #:
TEMPA 011CD
This is volume 6 of Tempa's
Dubstep Allstars
series, previously featuring mixes curated by
DJ Hatcha
,
DJ Youngsta
,
Kode9
and
N-Type
. The sixth volume is curated and mixed by Bristol-based producer/DJ,
Laurie
"
Appleblim
"
Osborne
. Alongside Skull Disco partner
Shackleton
, Appleblim has forged a sound of his own in both his production and DJ sets affording him interest from
Ricardo Villalobos
,
Radio Slave
and Kode9. Herein you'll find music reminiscent of
Basic Channel
and
Renegade Soundwave
, as Osborne's selection moves from devastating low-end to knee-bending groove. With his taste falling somewhere between dub and techno, Tempa made the decision to draft in the acutely talented Appleblim in order to showcase another dubstep don, after the dancefloor immediacy of Vol. 05. As with each installment of the
Allstars
series, the DJ has full control of the selection and as a recognized ambassador of Bristol's musical talent, it's no surprise that Bristolian producers including
Pinch
,
Peverelist
and
Komonazmuk
make up the majority of this CD. The rest of the CD is comprised of tracks from the latest, newest and finest of the dub scene and beyond:
2562
,

,
Jus Wan
,
TRG & Selector Dub U
,
Skream
,

Dubstep Allstars

Voted "CD Of The Year" in 2007's Dubstep Forum Awards as well as receiving critical acclaim in

The Roots Of El-B
-- UK garage/dubstep pioneer
El-B
's first retrospective that pulls together all the ultra-rare white labels, lost remixes and dusty DAT tapes, to preserve for posterity the output of this transient but seminal moment. During 2000-2002, a brief but influential window opened in urban music. Drum & bass moved out of its London heartland and UK garage imploded under the weight of commercial expectation. Between these forces, one man,
Lewis Beadle
aka El-B, assembled a production crew in Streatham, south London. The roots of dubstep were planted in a shed at the end of a winding garden path. Paid for by the funds of a failed album deal and built by hand by the crew themselves, the shed contained Ghost studios, where during the night hours, El-B and the camp built a sound all of their own. Edgier than UK garage, but sexier than the cold onslaught drum & bass was moving into, the Ghost sound was unique. At its core were El-B's incredible talents as a producer. Having rolled on the edge of the metalheadz camp as a teenager, never getting a let in, he gained fame in UK garage as one-half of legendary UK garage outfit,
Groove Chronicles
. Out of the ashes of this partnership grew El- B's signature sound of sharp woodblock snares, ghostly edgy textures, dark bass combined with a little black secret technology: the dark art of swing. Even at that time, the effect of this sound was self evident, as producer after local producer, from
Skream
to
Kode9
and later
Burial
, became influenced by it. "
The thing about those drums: they're still the future
," Burial insisted before his first album. "
People still don't know how to do those drums. It's an unknown thing. It's like the last fucking secret left in music: how you do those drums. I've tried...
" Eight years later, as dubstep blossoms into an international phenomenon, the El-B sound remains peerless. It's perhaps fitting now that, for the first time, El-B's seminal work is lifted from treasured record collections and lost vaults. These are the roots of El-B: they run deep. Featuring contributions by
Simba

Juiceman
, and

Tempa classic, re-issued due to popular demand. Very welcome reissue of this Tempa double-pack, originally released at a critical evolutionary point, December 2004. The track listing tells you as much, with pioneering heads
Geeneus
and
El-B
on the A/B, preceding now-rulers
Kode9
(featuring
Daddy Gee
),
Digital Mystikz
,
D1
and
Loefah
, who fill the remaining sides. All the tracks are heaters, especially D1's infamous "Crack Bong" (later remixed by Loefah and smashed on
Dubstep Allstars Vol. 02
), the Mystikz' "Give Jah Glory" and Loefah's early monster "Truly Dread," a clear sign of things to come for the man. The tracks literally get darker with every side, and listening with hindsight you can arguably hear dubstep turn a corner and come fully into its own right here. An essential document and now-classic release, back on the table.

,

,
N-Type
, and
Appleblim
. Discovery, not familiarity, has been the key to the success of this series, and this philosophy continues as
Chef
and
Ramadanman
take the reigns on this double disc expedition which unearths newfound pleasures aplenty. Chef, much lauded for his main room DJ sets, employs a more show-and-tell technique for this mix. Released from the obligations of moving a peak-time crowd, Chef affords each riddim good time to be absorbed. Rapid-fire mixes are replaced with subtle mixer effects and 1 bar loops. In some cases, tracks are simply cut out to make way for the next. On paper, this style could be almost nonchalant, but upon listening, you realize nothing has been left to chance. The peak-and-trough workout continues in earnest with Ramadanman on the second disc, which reveals an acute sense of rhythm in both production and mixing. Testing a rookie raver's balance, he throws elastic rhythms into the mix and collides sonics to create multi-textured soundscapes. Consistently demonstrating impeccable taste, Ramadanman draws on a school of artists who, like him, favor a clean, considered sound. He throws in dashes of grime with a handful of assured and abrupt riddims as well as the technoid, ethereal and rave-era influenced production which has allowed him to carve his niche as a DJ. Skream
's highly-anticipated second album finally arrives.
Ollie "Skream" Jones
is on a major roll. The Croydon DJ, producer and original dubstepper had the festival anthem of last year with his "Let's Get Ravey" remix of
La Roux
's "In For The Kill"; he's just been featured on the cover of
NME
with his
Magnetic Man
co-stars
Benga
and
Artwork
(not to mention the covers of
DJ
and
Mixmag
) and as we speak, he is all over Radio 1 with the lead track from
Outside The Box
. The tune in question, "Listenin' To The Records On My Wall," is the perfect introduction to why Skream's current level of success is just the beginning. It's a joyful, ragingly energetic celebration of the last quarter decade of British street music, inspired by the hardcore and jungle records used by his older brother
Hijak
. It's also a brilliant pop record that makes perfect sense to everyone who grew up surrounded by the breaks and beats of the 1990s and to those who didn't. This, however, is not a revival record. A natural-born modernist, Skream has selected 14 tracks that cover hip-hop (with one track featuring L.A. rapper
Murs
from
Living Legends
), bass-wobbling dubstep, dreamy electronica, a dark and tribal track with La Roux, and a strong dose of euphoric jungle on "The Epic Last Song" -- a track that is inadvisable to listen to while driving, unless you want another six points on your license.
Outside The Box
is the sound of an artist who is ready to take his considerable talents to a wider audience without compromising any of the raw, hedonistic, emotional, lose-yourself madness that has made him literally legendary to hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Take "Where You Should Be," a song which features singer and songwriter
Sam Frank
. There's the 8-bit computer game inspiration of "CPU"; the
Daft Punk
-styled vocals of "How Real" featuring
Freckles
; the tuff-but-soothing heartbeat of "Fields Of Emotion" and the
Jocelyn Brown
-sampling "I Love The Way," which sees the first lady of disco pitched right down -- also heard during Skream's massive festival sets at Pukkelpop, Glastonbury and Roskilde. Towards the end of the album, there are moments that point in a whole new direction, like "Reflections," a tune written with talented drum 'n' bass-heads
dBridge
and
Instra:mental
. And then there's "A Song For Lenny," a sad and very personal musical dedication to a lost friend. Album aside, life is busy for Oliver Jones. He's back to DJing, switching up his sets to include 4/4, techno, garage and grime and, most weeks, hosting his Rinse FM show -- now alongside Benga. It's going to a big summer, inside and outside the box.

Horsepower Productions
return to Tempa with their third album; a bold and intrepid
Quest For The Sonic Bounty
. Horsepower Productions are dubstep's foundational producers responsible for the now classic, early scene-defining tracks "Gorgon Sound" and "Classic Deluxe"and for dubstep's first LPs -- the revered
In Fine Style
(TEMPA 001CD) and
To The Rescue
(TEMPA 003CD).
Quest For The Sonic Bounty
is Horsepower's stunning return LP, their first in six years. If you were to unearth the flourishing dubstep tree you'd find Horsepower at its roots. Their debut album was the first LP to be released on Tempa, and it was the press release for
In Fine Style
back in 2002 that first gave the fledgling genre its name -- and the cover feature in
XLR8R
(July/Aug '02) that first used the term in print and immortalized the name. Horsepower are the revered, ground-zero catalysts of the sound which is now capturing the imagination of the new rave generation. Originally an 8-strong collective, featuring amongst others
Lev Jnr
,
Nassis
,
Simon D
,
The Culprit
and
Jay King
, the current incarnation of Horsepower includes
Matt HP
aka Lev Jnr, Nassis, and Jay King with the indomitable
Benny Ill
at the helm. The quest for the elusive sonic bounty begins with tentative steps in the rain and journeys over land and across the seven seas, all the while weaving a rich, musical tapestry. The pulsating, staccato bass line of "Mexican Slayride" and its tale of a band of mercenaries challenging a despotic bandit overlord gives way to the epic voodoo chronicle of "22" -- witch-doctor bones rattling beneath the distant drums in this dramatic tale of the mysteries of the Caribbean. "Water" tells the story of a scorched and war-ravaged Earth, where power over the survivors is held by he who controls the water. The two tracks featured on Horsepower Productions' most recent 12" for Tempa "Kingstep" and "Damn It" make a re-appearance here, having been revamped and extended specifically for this album. The penultimate track is a remix of "Exercising" -- a track from
Lee "Scratch" Perry
's album
The Mighty Upsetter
, and it's dubstep at its best: deep, dark and moving. Just wait for those violins! The remix takes us to India, Jamaica and beyond; rising up beyond the clouds of the heavenly mountain, sacred instruments play us along our spiritual journey. The album is wrapped up by the hauntingly beautiful "Poison Wine." For those wanting a pleasant coffee table album, be warned
Quest For The Sonic Bounty
is a rigorous aural and physical experience. When it's finished with you, you will understand that their unerring quest, carving new tributaries and exploring far-flung lands, is indeed what creates our very own sonic bounty.

Rinse FM's DJ
Distance
takes on the eighth edition in Tempa's
Dubstep Allstars
compilation, following on from notable mixes by, among others,
Kode9
,
Appleblim
,
Ramadanman
and
Youngsta
. If there's one man who can give a snapshot of the core of dubstep as such in 2011, it's Distance. He's been there in the scene from the beginning, from way back when the sound's aficionados could be numbered in the hundreds worldwide. And from then 'til now, his DJ sets, his own productions and his Chestplate label have always stayed true to the deep, heavy and immersive style from which sprung everything else we hear today. What he plays, and what he's put on this CD, is dubstep from the heartlands: the biggest and best dubplates from the people who have made the scene what it is. For this mix, Distance returned to the source. What you get on
Dubstep Allstars Vol. 08
is the music that has always formed the backbone of Distance's DJ sets: the artists he's retained solid links to over the years. It's packed with Distance's own productions, and those of his closest associates in the scene
Cyrus
and
Tunnidge
, but also with others he's collaborated with over the years.
Benga
is here with the fearsomely dark "Chemical Compound," a slap across the face for those who think he's all about pop-step or jump-around wobblers nowadays. And Bristol's
DJ Pinch
appears, teamed up with Distance in their
Deleted Scenes
guise, demonstrating his continued mastery of exquisite detail in production and showing just why he is still a lynchpin of the scene and still rattling chests some eight years on from his conversion to the sound. Other artists include:

2011 repress. Without any question, this was THE dubstep anthem of 2007, possibly even a bigger anthem than
Skream
's legendary late 2005 "Midnight Request Line." This 12" release heralds the graduation of
Benga

DMZ

Coki
. When the South London pair got together, they were on a mission to depart from the sound of previous productions and what resulted is a crazily infectious melody. "Drumz West" features Benga's trademark snare, forcing the listener to continuously shift focus between the skank-inducing bass line and the melody of the synths. The final track, "Emotions" showcases Benga's versatility, revealing his affinity with house music. It's perhaps this last track, which will raise most eyebrows outside of dubstep circles.

TEMPA 040LP
This is the fifth volume in Tempa's
Skreamizm
series, now bigger than ever, for the first time on 3 discs. Until now, these 6 cuts have been limited to DJ sets from the mighty
Skream
and his closest spars, causing a frenzy amongst ravers and listeners who have yet been able to take home the productions to listen to at their leisure. Proceedings kick-off with the haunting synth couplets of "Filth," a dread-inducing production with a raging bass line, held captive by a kick on the 1 and 3 which seems like it will give way to the beast at any point. One of the highlights of the
Magnetic Man
(Skream,
Artwork
,
Benga
) live show and a firm favorite with DJs including
N-Type
and
Plastician
, "Filth" is the first of three unadulterated bangers. Two more dancefloor destroyers are "Fick" (currently being smashed every set by
Sinden
) and "Simple City." It's perhaps these that you'll be most familiar with; the chest-plate bruising bass on the 2nd drop of "Fick," metered with an almost fairytale melody, or the ever-mutating bass line drop of "Simple City," which seems to grow in intensity with each snare hit, as if the bass were a horse and the snare Skream's riding whip. Amongst the headtop material, you'll find three more playfully energetic numbers. As an ode to those that were there back in the day, Skream comes with "One For The Heads Who Remember," a track reminiscent of '98/'99
Steve Gurley
sets with distinctly Skream chords, offering us an insight to what he may have been producing throughout the garage era, "If You Know" and "Rimz" both expose the house and garage roots of contemporary dubstep and complete the triple pack. With bookings stretching into 2009 including those with his live band Magnetic Man, we can forgive the Stella Sesh Selector for the long pause in releases, for
Skreamizm Vol. 5
is an overbearing argument that the best things come to those who wait.

's omnipresent "Night" was cheery in demeanor, "Buzzin'" is its deranged and aggressive cousin; equally as infectious, but this time sporting a ragged, unkempt beard. Perfect peak-time rave weaponry already being battered by
Skream
,
Joker
, and
Plastician
. "One Million" is an off-peak roller with a lead bass line reminiscent of
Bad Company
. Sub-bass stabs topped with brittle drums give the track its industrial exoskeleton, while scurrying glitches and intermittent cymbals provide emotion for the hollow interior of this doom-evoking beast.

Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
TEMPA 044EP
Best-known for his releases under
Goldie
's Metalheadz imprint, this is
Data
's first release on Tempa. His sound is more akin to
Headhunter
and
Basic Channel
than, say,
Benga
, and sits more comfortably on your home monitors than it does peak-time on the dancefloor. Moving with the measured pace of experience, "Doors Of Perception" (featuring
Cell
) is characterized by intermittent sweeps and percussion which add scar tissue to the body of work. "Leaves" references the glory of individuality while remaining grounded.

are a type of hollow Japanese drum, struck with hardwood sticks called

Price:

This double-pack by
TRG
shows that the producer now has more in common with branches of house than traditional dubstep. "Twilight Riddim" forces you to jack your body in surrender to the shuffling drum loop. "Diskotek 79" is more soulful, with squelching chords, synth lines and a rousing female chorus, and "Strobe Lick" is a luscious, warm sub-bass roller. Already battered by DJs including
Sinden
,
Rob Da Bank
,
Coldcut
,
Laurent Garnier
,
Mary Anne Hobbs
and
Modeselektor
, these cuts highlight TRG's versatility.

Tempa Allstars Vol. 6
Label:
TEMPA (UK)
Format:
2x12"
Price:
$18.00
Catalog #:
TEMPA 051EP
This is the sixth volume in the
Tempa Allstars
series, providing a trusted filter to bass music enthusiasts in a time where music is so readily available that it's becoming increasingly more challenging to discover its real highlights, especially in the underground.
Skream
opens Allstars 6 with "Rollin' Kicks," and it does exactly what it says. The payoff here comes with giving yourself over to the progressive nature of the track -- long-time followers of Skream's productions will recognize this as one of the many styles in the pioneer's arsenal while relative newcomers may be surprised by this progressive and nuanced technique. For those who've not kept one eye on the brilliant and diverse output DnB producers such as
dBridge
and indeed
Shogun Audio
have been putting out there, this may be your first introduction to
Icicle
. With "Anything," wicked production value gives weight to his bass notes and shine to the shuffling metallic percussion. Icicle is joined by fellow samurai from the Shogun camp,
Alix Perez
, who sends an elastic bass line searching through a corridor of muffled voices, distorted synth lines and seemingly echoing chasms, bringing
Allstars 6
to a close with "Untitled." Also included are three of the most exciting beatsmiths our generation has sprouted so far.
Falty DL
comes with a short and sweet offering in the form of "Sunday" -- a lush riddim perfect for the British BBQ, and at under 3 minutes, the sun may still be shining before it's time to replace the plates with
Benga
's "I Come From London," swung with the indomitable swagger that oozes from the S. Londoner. Cricket-like whistles add high energy frenzy to the rolling bass and percussion jamboree. Remixer du jour,
SBTRKT
's music has found its way into the boxes of electronic music's most discerning DJs and he doesn't falter on "Sleep In Tokyo," an early-hours backdrop for cities that never sleep.

Skreamizm Vol. 6
Label:
TEMPA (UK)
Format:
3x12"
Price:
$23.00
Catalog #:
TEMPA 061LP
Skream
has always reserved his deadliest club material for the
Skreamizm
series of EPs. Volume six, the first addition to the series since 2009, proves no exception. His attention might have been divided between exploring a range of styles on 2010's
Outside The Box
(TEMPA 016CD) album, but all seven tracks here stay locked, hard, to the demands of the dancefloor. Broader in its sonic range than any other
Skreamizm
so far, the range of sounds within this sixth volume in the series reflects dubstep's growing status over the last couple of years. It encompasses the sort of crushing, big-room club tracks his sets have become increasingly known for. "Xmas Day Swagger" is metallic and bristly, and the shuddering "Indistinct"'s intensity is cleverly offset by tiny melodic flourishes and fragments of female vocal. Both "Abstruse" and "Snarled" match their titles perfectly, the latter in particular casting robotic half-step in sleek, predatory shapes. The most startling moments, though, are those that depart from straight-up club form: a characteristically acerbic vocal from
Trim
on "Tweedle Dee Tweedle DUMB!"; and "FNKONOMIKA," where Skream continues to explore the sort of stripped-back, twilight drum 'n' bass pioneered by friend and collaborator
dBridge
. Dubstep at the moment finds itself in something of a scattered state -- blame it on
Skrillex
. Skream's music, though, remains closely linked both to his own history and to the genre's roots. It's refreshing to hear a producer making tracks for larger dancefloors that retain something of the subtlety and nuance of the past.

J:Kenzo
's tracks fall firmly within the
Loefah
school of dubstep minimalism -- the view that less, if wielded properly, can certainly be more -- an approach which has seen his tracks become staples in scene figurehead
Youngsta
's DJ sets and Rinse FM shows. "Ruffhouse" features a detached vocal from
Rod Azlan
, coiled and primed for attack. "Therapy" is marked by traces of dub-techno and sonar echo trails that bound around the mix.
