At 15 he discovered making music, and 5 years after, he helped to change the course of UK urban music, building the foundations of dubstep, the UK's most talked-about musical genre. Skream's clipped, techy minimal style has quickly become his trademark. Between these forces, one man, Lewis Beadle aka El-B, assembled a production crew in Streatham, south London. The roots of dubstep were planted in a shed at the end of a winding garden path. Paid for by the funds of a failed album deal and built by hand by the crew themselves, the shed contained Ghost studios, where during the night hours, El-B and the camp built a sound all of their own. Edgier than UK garage, but sexier than the cold onslaught drum & bass was moving into, the Ghost sound was unique. At its core were El-B's incredible talents as a producer. Having rolled on the edge of the metalheadz camp as a teenager, never getting a let in, he gained fame in UK garage as one-half of legendary UK garage outfit, Groove Chronicles. Out of the ashes of this partnership grew El- B's signature sound of sharp woodblock snares, ghostly edgy textures, dark bass combined with a little black secret technology: the dark art of swing. Tempa classic, re-issued due to popular demand. Very welcome reissue of this Tempa double-pack, originally released at a critical evolutionary point, December 2004. The track listing tells you as much, with pioneering heads Geeneus and El-B on the A/B, preceding now-rulers Kode9 (featuring Daddy Gee), Digital Mystikz, D1 and Loefah, who fill the remaining sides. All the tracks are heaters, especially D1's infamous "Crack Bong" (later remixed by Loefah and smashed on Dubstep Allstars Vol. 02), the Mystikz' "Give Jah Glory" and Loefah's early monster "Truly Dread," a clear sign of things to come for the man. The tracks literally get darker with every side, and listening with hindsight you can arguably hear dubstep turn a corner and come fully into its own right here. An essential document and now-classic release, back on the table.

This is the debut full-length release from Bristol, UK-based dubstep producer, Headhunter. This is also the first time a collection of Headhunter music can be found anywhere on CD. This is volume 7 of Tempa's original and essential Dubstep Allstars series, previously featuring mixes curated by DJ Hatcha, DJ Youngsta, Kode9, N-Type, and Appleblim. Discovery, not familiarity, has been the key to the success of this series, and this philosophy continues as Chef and Ramadanman take the reigns on this double disc expedition which unearths newfound pleasures aplenty. Chef, much lauded for his main room DJ sets, employs a more show-and-tell technique for this mix. Released from the obligations of moving a peak-time crowd, Chef affords each riddim good time to be absorbed. Rapid-fire mixes are replaced with subtle mixer effects and 1 bar loops. Skream's highly-anticipated second album finally arrives. Ollie "Skream" Jones is on a major roll. The Croydon DJ, producer and original dubstepper had the festival anthem of last year with his "Let's Get Ravey" remix of La Roux's "In For The Kill"; he's just been featured on the cover of NME with his Magnetic Man co-stars Benga and Artwork (not to mention the covers of DJ and Mixmag) and as we speak, he is all over Radio 1 with the lead track from Outside The Box. The tune in question, "Listenin' To The Records On My Wall," is the perfect introduction to why Skream's current level of success is just the beginning. It's a joyful, ragingly energetic celebration of the last quarter decade of British street music, inspired by the hardcore and jungle records used by his older brother Hijak. There's the 8-bit computer game inspiration of "CPU"; the Daft Punk-styled vocals of "How Real" featuring Freckles; the tuff-but-soothing heartbeat of "Fields Of Emotion" and the Jocelyn Brown-sampling "I Love The Way," which sees the first lady of disco pitched right down -- also heard during Skream's massive festival sets at Pukkelpop, Glastonbury and Roskilde. Proceedings kick-off with the haunting synth couplets of "Filth," a dread-inducing production with a raging bass line, held captive by a kick on the 1 and 3 which seems like it will give way to the beast at any point. One of the highlights of the Magnetic Man (Skream, Artwork, Benga) live show and a firm favorite with DJs including N-Type and Plastician, "Filth" is the first of three unadulterated bangers. The Lost Tapes EP is a 4-track collection of high grade Horsepower 2-step/early-era dubstep originals and remixes from that time, destined for release on Tempa. Before release, the DAT tapes went missing. The tapes were eventually found, and the choicest cuts re-edited and digitally restored by Benny Ill.

This 12" from Horsepower Productions represents their most current output while also providing a tantalizing glimpse of their fourth album. This 12" is something a little different from Benny Ill and Matt HP. Both tracks are rooted in dubstep -- containing its trademark shuffling hi-hats, backbeat snare, bass -- but never ones to be pigeonholed, Horsepower continue to push the envelope here, bringing their hip-hop influence to the fore. For fans of DJ Shadow, Mr. Scruff, Kid Koala, Herbaliser, Bonobo, etc.

Skream has always reserved his deadliest club material for the Skreamizm series of EPs. Volume six, the first addition to the series since 2009, proves no exception. His attention might have been divided between exploring a range of styles on 2010's Outside The Box (TEMPA 016CD) album, but all seven tracks here stay locked, hard, to the demands of the dancefloor. Broader in its sonic range than any other Skreamizm so far, the range of sounds within this sixth volume in the series reflects dubstep's growing status over the last couple of years. It encompasses the sort of crushing, big-room club tracks his sets have become increasingly known for. "Xmas Day Swagger" is metallic and bristly, and the shuddering "Indistinct"'s intensity is cleverly offset by tiny melodic flourishes and fragments of female vocal. Both "Abstruse" and "Snarled" match their titles perfectly, the latter in particular casting robotic half-step in sleek, predatory shapes. The most startling moments, though, are those that depart from straight-up club form: a characteristically acerbic vocal from Trim on "Tweedle Dee Tweedle DUMB!"; and "FNKONOMIKA," where Skream continues to explore the sort of stripped-back, twilight drum 'n' bass pioneered by friend and collaborator dBridge. Dubstep at the moment finds itself in something of a scattered state -- blame it on Skrillex. Skream's music, though, remains closely linked both to his own history and to the genre's roots. It's refreshing to hear a producer making tracks for larger dancefloors that retain something of the subtlety and nuance of the past.
