This is a cassette-only limited edition of 250 copies. Who on earth are The Van Patterson Quartet? The Tapeworm stumbled upon the lost psych-rock recording, Live At F.W. by The Van Patterson Quartet, late during a sleepless night. A link started a chain of events -- the Wormery would not sleep until the answer had been found! "Who on earth are The Van Patterson Quartet?" they asked themselves. They sent out feelers via their contacts. They waited. Replies came back -- digital shrugs, all expressing a deep fascination that something sounding so splendid could remain unearthed for so long. Then, "Mr. Big" stepped in. Quite by chance, he was neighbors with one of the band members. Such serendipity. He hooked The Tapeworm up. Letters were written, requests made, permissions granted, and a few short weeks later, a copy of Live At F.W., mailed with a blurry Polaroid, landed on the label's desk. They sat back and listened properly for the first time. They were blown away. They had just been given possibly the last great unreleased psych-rock recording. Who on earth are The Van Patterson Quartet? This recording dates, apparently, from the late-'60s. It features this hitherto unknown band in full flight, live. It needs to be heard to be believed. Funky, fuzzed- up, flipped-out, fucked and fried. Forty minutes of hallucinating Hammond and ferocious feedback. That's who they are.

Meltaot are a bass-heavy, improvised noise duo made up of UK artist/musician/broadcaster Sharon Gal and artist/writer/musician SavX (aka Savage Pencil aka Edwin Pouncey). After recording together at a session for Pestrepeller (the other band they are a part of), they decided to take the project one step further and record as a separate entity. Although black metal, drone and doom would seem to be at the core of what Meltaot are involved with here, the real intention was to paint a series of atmospheric sound pictures (not all of them dark) using voice, bass guitar and other instrumentation/effects as their materials. With a distinctive palette of woozy electronics, raw and processed recordings, combined with vocals and abstract sounds, Baraclough produce a unique aural aesthetic that is hypnotic yet agitating, intimate yet awkward. Since their inception in 2006, Baraclough have performed in a variety of bizarre locations such as a Kilburn rock pub and a former Turner Prize winner's stock cupboard. In March of 2009, Baraclough released their debut album Hello Animal on Forris, their audio publishing cooperative. Members of Baraclough include: Paul de Casparis, Dale Cornish, and Eddie Nuttall.

This tape, originally released in 1984 on Likvidér, features contributions from Per Martinsen (Mental Overdrive) and Nils Johansen (Bel Canto). All tracks recorded on a Teac 4-track cassette recorder at Elverhøy Studenthjem, Tromsø and Nord-Norsk Studenthjem, Oslo, Norway between 1983-1984. Berlin-based producer and head of the Macro Recordings label Stefan Goldmann couches his release for The Tapeworm thusly: "Since I'm a less than mediocre guitar player, but a quite versatile editing engineer with a decade of experience of handling samplers and midi-sequencers, I could finally realize an old project which I can trace back to a lesson with my bass teacher in my teen days. He had found out a bass player with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra had recorded hours of improvisations and paid an engineer to cut it together into an enjoyable 'jazz' album. The teacher, a profound jazz player himself, found this to be some sort of scam, while I was deeply impressed by the idea of merging hi-tech and improvisation. Finally, I had a reason to play and record some guitar for this fine project and cut it to death afterwards. Haven't I Seen You Before is a cycle of five pieces, with two versions each, so it can be listened to as a continuous performance, as well as looped recordings when employing the reverse function some cassette players have. The latter can be done at any point, since the parts on the A and B sides match. All material on this album has a guitar (amplified and microphoned simultaneously) as its only sound source. These initial recordings were cut into loops with durations ranging from a fraction of a second to more than a minute. They were arranged into compositions, adding reverb, stereo panorama and volume adjustments. Layering the loops creates polymetric structures, but I've tried to avoid the usual loop minimalism by the sheer number of looped segments which appear and disappear at distinctly different rates. Micro-loops vs. macro-loops is the main structural feature of the music on this cassette, playing around with a key feature of the format. Three recordings inspired this effort: John McLaughlin's 1970 My Goal's Beyond album, which offered a side of multitrack solo guitar improvisations (I believe this was the first jazz record to do this) as well as his unreleased guitar/voice album with his wife (John and Eve McLaughlin). McLaughlin was heavily under the influence of guru Sri Chinmoy and both albums have this very unique, dark drug/sect edge, adding an extremely intense quality to the modal guitar figures (well, probably also due to the Indian music he has been studying and merging with some impressionist composition techniques). I have tried to capture a bit of the mood and apply it to a loop-based, cut-up orgy. Another crucial record to me has been Derek Bailey's Ballads -- I've been astonished by the tidal movements in and out of the standards he's playing around with. So there is a harmonic base to my guitar mishandling, which is present throughout the entire album -- moving in and out of it. I'd also like to note I applied an altered tuning to the guitar to achieve different natural harmonics than the ones one gets with the standard tuning -- and not to give in to the temptation of cutting some blues licks." --Stefan Goldmann, Berlin, 2009

John Butcher's work ranges through improvisation, his own compositions, multi-tracked saxophone pieces and explorations with feedback and extreme acoustics. Originally a physicist, he left academia in 1982, and has since collaborated with hundreds of musicians. He is well known as a soloist, recently exploring unusual site-specific acoustics, and has released seven albums of solo saxophone music. His tape for The Tapeworm features two contrasting performance styles. The first is a live recording in three parts for tenor and soprano saxophones, recorded in concert October 30, 2009, L'Eglise Saint-Merri, Paris. Its flipside is a 20-minute piece for saxophone controlled feedback and piano (one player).

Mesmer was Peter Rehberg's first-ever solo composition, originally released in 1995 as part of Mesmervariations, a (long-deleted) 2CD by Ash International presented in an oversized plastic wallet with eight card inserts. That release contained various original compositions influenced by the work of Friedrich Mesmer, and included pieces by Ryoji Ikeda, Gescom, Edvard Graham Lewis, Robert Hampson, Bruce Gilbert, CM Von Hausswolff and Drome (Bernd Friedmann). The artists featured on this release were given a copy of the vinyl recording Mesmer (Ash 1.8) and asked to compose a piece influenced by the work of Friedrich Mesmer, the 19th century "animal magnetist and hypnotist." The brief was -- there is no brief; method and style were left entirely to the discretion of the composer. Rehberg's contribution is reproduced in its entirety here, the B-side of the cassette containing a copy of the weathered dubplate of the track he cut in 1996 for personal DJ use.

Masterminded by Terre Thaemlitz and "fresh... for '96!" -- Memphistophelis by Chugga (aka Lester Fuero and Jeff Hanes) is a deliciously dated blend of trip-hop, '70s disco, funk, Jeep-dub and lounge, mixed well and served chilled. Each track on Memphistophelis picks up on a different '70s sound while tying in that unique Memphis combination of sparsity and orchestration. The album was mastered by an unlikely culprit -- and friend -- transgendered electro-acoustic/ambient/house Jack-of-all-genres Terre Thaemlitz (aka DJ Sprinkles). Although it was shopped around and two or three cuts trickled out over the years on obscure vinyl and compilation releases, Memphistophelis never found a home -- until The Tapeworm.

Cassette-only release. Edition of 250 copies. Two readings of the short story Johnny Remember Me by its author Cathi Unsworth and by Pete Woodhead (O Yuki Conjugate/The Sons Of Silence). Cathi Unsworth is a writer and editor who lives and works in London. She is the author of three pop-cultural crime novels, Bad Penny Blues, The Singer and The Not Knowing, and the editor of the short story collection London Noir, all published by Serpent's Tail. Cathi has written on music, film, art, fashion and culture for Sounds, Bizarre, BFI Flipside, Mojo and Uncut, amongst many others. Her collaborator on this release is Pete Woodhead, an electronic composer who cut his musical teeth as part of O Yuki Conjugate and The Sons Of Silence and is now best known for his soundtrack contribution to the hit British zombie movie Shaun Of The Dead.

Zerocrop is the pseudonym of London-based musician Parker, an independent artist who has been releasing albums through the web site www.zerocrop.com since 2000. The music is a hypnotic mix of complex vocal melodies and spoken word sequences on unsettling themes, set against a rich backwash of pedal steel, guitars and electronics. Zerocrop has remixed, written songs for and performed with the incomparable Billie Ray Martin (Electribe 101) and regularly creates the show music for award-winning milliner Justin Smith. This cassette features four new tracks recorded specially for The Tapeworm. Running for just over 30 minutes, these are four new numbers that reference tape recordings as their subject matter. Analog Apparitions, by Brooklyn-based composer Randy Gibson, is a pair of 30-minute compositions designed specifically to be recorded and released on cassette tape. A student of seminal minimalist composer La Monte Young, Gibson follows in the tradition of prime harmonic just intonation pioneered by Young in the 1960s. "Apparitions Of The Four Pillars," the underlying composition on this tape, explores the depth of the harmonic series through standard just intonation methods and the use of higher prime-harmonic relationships. In the 18 hours of recordings layered onto the two sides of the cassette, you can hear the mechanism of the tape itself, the evolution of improvisations over seven recording sessions, and the purity of sine waves in complex prime-harmonic relationships. Randy Gibson is a composer and performer, living and working in New York City. He works with structure, evolutionary compositional models, and improvisation to create enveloping and ritualistic works in just intonation. Gibson began his musical training at the age of six, studying percussion. In the summer of 1998, he travelled to Japan to study marimba with the great Keiko Abe. In early 2003, Gibson began composition studies in New York with La Monte Young. Continually humbling and revelatory, his studies with Young have brought greater clarity to his work, and reinforced his aesthetic convictions. Gibson combines live and electronic music, as well as aspects of the world music he has studied, most importantly raga singing in the Kirana tradition with La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela, but also Balinese and Japanese music. Gibson's work has been performed at festivals around the world including the Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Art in Minnesota, The Internationale Tanzmesse NRW in Düsseldorf, The Boulder and Minnesota International Fringe Festivals, HOT DAM: the opening festival of the Denver Art Museum, the Sans Souci International Festival of Dance Cinema, the ISIM 3rd annual conference, the Erick Hawkins Legacy Forum in New York, the 2010 Korea Experimental Arts Festival in Seoul, and the 44th Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Darmstadt. This is a remix of Fennesz's Szampler cassette, created by Stefan Goldmann, erasing Christian Fennesz's original samples one by one and replacing them with corresponding samples of his own, made between 1999-2010 for his Akai S5000 sampler, in the same sequence. As a result, this cassette contains no sounds whatsoever from Fennesz's original. While Szampler was a journey through Christian Fennesz' own sample collection, Stefan Goldmann structured his own sound archive around the layout of Szampler, replacing it all sound-by-sound. The result is a dialog of the sonic atoms that built the works of two of today's most challenging musical minds. It's a first-ever glimpse behind the curtains -- a full anatomy of sound, more revealing than any interview on "how it was done." When asked for his opinions on the art of the remix, Mr. Goldmann was unavailable for comment. So, instead, here's some words, written by Trevor Horn in 1986, that appeared on the rear sleeve of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Warriors Of The Wasteland 12" single: "This twelve wild disciples version of 'Warriors' is, of course, a remix of the track that opens the Frankie album Liverpool. The question is now begged -- what is a remix? 'It used to be a change of clothes, now it's a dream come true.' There is one answer. On Liverpool, the members of Frankie Goes To Hollywood played 'Warriors' with their own notoriously fair hands: touching their instruments, squeezing, banging, urging, making noises which were recorded by microphones onto a tape recorder. This 'so-called' 12", this marketing invention, this golden gate to possibilities is in fact a total cheat. What is a remix? 'A total cheat.' There is another answer. No one played anything, in any orthodox sense. It was all done by computers, very powerful computers (38 megabytes RAM 600 megabytes hard disk storage) juggling and organizing pre-recorded sounds. We all had a hand in it -- that is, myself, Steve, Andy Richards the keyboard player, the lads, Holly and Paul. We all peered over the computer operator's shoulder at the little screen, to see what the hell was going on, willing the circuits to do their uncanny business. From the little screen leapt twelve wild disciples, with their gifts for the listener. What is a remix? 'A gift.' -- when it's Frankie, and Frankie only. And this 12" is Frankie. Only." Created from live performances in Spain (Madrid, Alcalá de Henares and Gijón) in 1994, using 300 tapes received from around 200 different artists from the international home-music cassette network. Remixed and mastered at Messor Studios, Antonio García Studios (Madrid) and Zidslick Studios (Louisville, KY) in 1994. Re-edited, re-mixed and re-mastered by Francisco López at Mobile Messor (Paraguay) in 2010. After years of exchanging self-released music on cassette and collaborating via post, Francisco López and Zan Hoffman embarked in 1994 on a somehow surreal small tour of live performances in Spain. By mixing their own sonic materials and recorded stuff on cassette received directly from hundreds of underground artists worldwide, they carried out live recombination shows with eight cassette decks and a shared mixing board. A synthetic/distilled edit of the most interesting moments arising from those live composition sessions is now released on this cassette by The Tapeworm.

EVPs captured at a cemetery in Pilot's Knob, Kentucky, PAW Case File PAW120. Situational Specific Frequency Tests and Results captured in 2009 at a cemetery location where in the late 1800s, reportedly accused of witchcraft, a woman and her daughter, Mary Evelyn Ford were burned alive in Marion County. The daughter was buried at Pilot's Knob cemetery and her mother at a separate location. At the cemetery, a dark, foreboding figure has also been seen. People have named this figure "The Watcher." It is said that this evil presence tries to get the little girl but cannot pass beyond the crucifix-decorated fence that surrounds her grave. Michael Esposito is an experimental artist and researcher in Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP). He is a descendant of Alfred Vail, who invented the Morse code with his partner Samuel Morse, and Jonathan Vail, office manager and assistant to Thomas Edison. Michael has participated in hundreds of paranormal investigations globally using his techniques and theories within the field of EVP. He and his partner Heidi Harman have collected tens of thousands of EVPs and video. He has appeared in a number of films, television shows and documentaries and has lectured to a variety of audiences. Fantom Auditory Operations' attempt is to take EVP research a step further, developing a body of work researchers and scientists may use in the future to unlock the mysteries of our own mortality.

Just before releasing Impermanence, his long-awaited second album, Othon has come up with an unexpected limited edition tape release. As the title suggests, Silky Hands Of A Rough Piano Boy centers on Othon's life-long companion, the piano. On the A-side, Othon returns to his soloist roots performing his new work "Behind The Veil Behold The Liquid Light!," together with two gems by Chopin ("Étude Op. 25, No.1") and Mendelssohn ("Venetian Gondola Song No.1" in G minor from "Songs Without Words"). On the B-Side, Othon is releasing for the first time two of his oldest and most adventurous songs to date. "Kali Dances" and "Digital Angel 000" were both recorded live as part of the composer's final recital at Blackheath Halls while still studying at London's Trinity College of Music, back in 2006. "Digital Angel 000," though not included on Othon's debut album Digital Angel, was originally one of the first songs written for the eponymous song cycle. Burning Tree are Dag Stiberg and Dag Erik Knedal Andersen. Andersen is perhaps best known for his "hyperactive, take-no-prisoners" approach to drumming. He has been a ubiquitous presence on the Norwegian improvised music scene over the last couple of years, and has toured all over Europe with groups such as Golden Dawn, Cunt Rash, and the now-inactive Supersonic Rocketship. Dag Stiberg has been studying alternative approaches to the saxophone sound for a decade, both solo and with his band Maranata. Mostly known for his wide use of guitar effects, he has taken another approach in the band Burning Tree, which explores the sounds of the acoustic realm. Burning Tree decided to go into the studio in February 2011 and record an acoustic session. They had recently done a lot of noise stuff with their noise bands Cunt Rash and Maranata and wanted to bring that energy to this recording. The result is a very harsh free-jazz tape with five tracks -- total 35 minutes -- with extremely dirty saxophone and ecstatic drums. Cover features an illustration by Florian Hetz. 200 copies only.

Andrew Lagowski writes: "The 7th Synphonie of the Seven Swevens aka 777 by Dr. Fleischbrittel was recorded direct to cassette on the 29th and 30th of May 1983 at IP1 3PG, Ipswich. The project was realized as a means of escape from the band mentality that I was part of at that time. It offered me the chance to free-form in more ways than one and express my more demonic leanings -- those of a frustrated teenager recording in whichever bedroom had the space for the equipment. Achim Mohné experiments with the space and time intervals of media, photography, video, digital image production, as well as with sound. His experiments bring to light the surprising uses that lie dormant in today's technology. For The Tapeworm, Achim focused on audiotape itself: as material, as body, as signifier and as sculpture. Some notes on the sources and methods used to create And It Could Have Been Dead... follow: A1., "How To Use This Cassette" is mixed from a 1982 Blaupunkt instruction tape for a cassette player. A2., "Widerverwendung" uses material from "MediaRecycling," a live performance at Gesellschaft für aktuelle Kunst (GAK) Bremen, 1999. This was a performance for opened-up VCRs, monitors, scissors, glue, medical gloves, cleansing alcohol. Sections of tapes were randomly chosen, cut with a scissors, then taped back live together in a different order. The version on this cassette was mixed in 2011. A3., "All I Have Ever Listened To" was mixed from "Sozialisationsmusik" -- a live performance at Academy of Media Arts, Cologne (1997) for three to eight turntables, cassette recorders and a mixer. With their help, vinyl records and cassettes from a great variety of genres (classic, electro, punk, rock, jazz, children's audio dramas) are layered-up and mixed live. The version on The Tapeworm's tape was edited in 2011. A4. and B1. were created using hand-operated cassette recorders. The tapes used for "Once Upon A Time They All Lived Happily Ever After" were all of fairy-tales. B2. ("Syntactical Swap") is a work for cassette recorder and turntable. Finally, B3. is a short blast, using beginnings and endings of The Tapeworm cassettes, #01-#34 as its sound source.

Old Apparatus are a four-piece audio/visual collective transmitting from East London that have been releasing bass-oriented electronic dance music on Mala's underground label Deep Medi Musik. This edition for The Tapeworm is an improvised instrumental piece using guitar, piano, violin and found sound ambiences recorded entirely in the front room of the house they share together. Given that most forms of electronic music are bound by linearity and grid-based digital audio workstations, Old Apparatus consciously embarked on an exploration of non-linear forms of musical expression. The audio on the tape is a snapshot in time of that exploration.
