SHANKAR, ANANDA
Title:
A Life and Music
Label:
TIMES SQUARE RECORDS
Format:
2CD
Price:
$15.00
Catalog #:
TSQ 9052CD
"Nephew of Ravi Shankar...Sitar teacher of Jimi Hendrix...a resident of '60s California when the words 'flower power' really meant something...is it any wonder that the work Ananda Shankar created is unique, vital and exciting?Ananda Shankar, in the words of a critic, 'was an original musician of the world before the term world music was invented.' Trained in Indian classical music and subsequently exposed to western trends, he pioneered a distinctive sound, decades ahead of its time: vibrant new age music, capable of breaking barriers between races, cultures and generations. Ananda, unfortunately, passed away in 1999, at the peak of his career. However, Ananda's creative efforts retain their originality and appeal even today. His music has inspired the 'Asian Underground' movement. His original vinyl recordings have always been in demand, and DJs/fans have paid ridiculous amounts of money to acquire them through specialist record outlets. Long unavailable, and too often bootlegged, the recordings on this specially-priced 2CD-set were originally released by the then EMI-owned Gramophone Company of India, and now known as Saregama India Ltd."

Sharki: Love Songs of Istanbul
Label:
TIMES SQUARE RECORDS
Format:
CD
Price:
$13.00
Catalog #:
TSQ 9056CD
"Sharki was a new form of poetry created in the 18th century reflecting the Europeanization of the culture of the Ottoman empire. A lament or love song in four lines, sharki challenged composers to conceive melodies that would accompany each line of the poem. Nesrin Sipahi's bewitching soft voice made her one of the leading figures in the renaissance of Turkish classical music in the 1950s. This collection of songs recorded in Istanbul in May 1991 for the CMP label captures this traditional music form and preserves it forever for generations to come. Featuring Kudsi Erguner and his ensemble, Erguner has dedicated himself to preserving traditional Turkish music."

The History Of Indian Film Music

TIMES SQUARE RECORDS
Format:
10CD BOX
Price:
$89.50
Catalog #:
TSQ 9072CD
"The first ever authentic historic collection of Bollywood music tracing its history from its beginning in 1930 to the present. The 168 tracks feature leading vocalists including Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd. Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Hemant Kumar, Geeta Dutt, Sonu Niigaam and many, many more. The development of Indian film music is traced from being overtly classical to being influenced by jazz and rock & roll in the 1960s and new age sounds in the 1970s, thanks to the musical genius of RD Burman. Later, the 1980s and 1990s sections introduce other influences like disco and hip hop, culminating in the 2000 section where Sufi and folk begin to appear and melody once again makes a comeback. Accompanied by a hardbound book tracing the history of the music with rare pictures, this set in stellar packaging features the greatest Bollywood hits of all time, and is produced as a joint collaboration by two of the oldest media companies in the sub-continent of India; Saregama (formerly The Gramophone Company of India) and The Times of India Group (the oldest News Media Corporation in India)."
Contents: 130 page full-color hardbound book; CD 1: 1930s - 1940s; CDs 2 & 3: 1950s; CDs 4 & 5: 1960s; CDs 6 & 7: 1970s; CD8: 1980s; CD9: 1990s; CD10: 2000-onwards.
