Trapez is happy to present Jeff Samuel's long-awaited first artist album entitled Step. After seven years of making music, "the 8-bit Tetris wizard" Jeff Samuel has produced a true classic LP, with tracks that rock the floor as well as tracks that are deep and melodic, sometimes even epic. The album has a strong songwriting link, although the music is still stripped down and jacking. Step was created during the spring of 2006, and Samuel continues in the melodic direction of his most recent releases on Trapez and Trapez Ltd, Bork and Endpoint. These tracks were conceived as part of a dancefloor album, but the extra steps and melodic sophistication makes especially the CD version (containing extra tracks) one which can be listened to in sequence. The title itself has many meanings: at its core, a step is an object to get from one level to another. We can see that Jeff has accomplished this on the closing track of the CD "I Think They Are Trying To Say Something," which uses a melody that evolves over the course of nine minutes, never repeating itself. His production elements have also been stepped up, including the use of strings on some tracks and even a short journey into broken beats on "Month 2 Month," both an ode to Detroit and to the struggle of living in the USA as a techno artist. Jeff's recent DJ sets have already been setting dance floors ablaze with album tracks like "Off The Mark" and "You Will Never Know," both featuring Samuel's trademark basslines and almost song-like hooks. With Step, Samuel consciously wanted to take his melodies as far as he could. While they have always been present in early works such as "Double Yum," "Knob" and "Fcote," they were never as outward and naked as on this LP. Could this album be his final statement in this direction? Maybe we will find out in another seven years.

The fifth compilation in the Selection series, specially mixed by label A&R and DJ Riley Reinhold (aka Triple R). Selection 5 features a lot more tracks than its predecessors, many of which have not been released on either Trapez or Trapez Ltd so far, but will be in 2007. Reinhold has released dozens of records, played all the best clubs, and hence has acquired all the best skills to mix tracks right. This CD starts with an unreleased track by Riley himself: "Point Zero" is a hypnotic psychedelic track that is mixed into Dominik Eulberg's remix of the rave monster "Fillertet2" by Shane Berry. Rico Puestel is a new German artist who shows promising skills with his Akufen-like structured funk trax. Martin Eyerer and Gui Boratto are next up, putting forward a bassline-driven, percussive minimal monster that works its way into jazzy chords before it returns to a stripped-down groove. Ananda's remix of Marek Bois is a groovy journey through different levels of dynamics, while Poland's superstar SLG takes a cool Mediterranean groove and a nice bass line that makes his track roll. Luke Le Mans has produced one of the rare acid tracks on Trapez, keeping it cool, controlled and nice in the build-up. 3 Channels contribute a rhythmic and deep Chicago-flavored rhythm track which flows nicely into Jeff Samuel's last Trapez drop. Sandiego presents his own version of Spanish funk-induced techno, Florian Meindl and Alex Under provide pure German youth techno and Audio Werner remixes Swat-Squad's top track. Mark Henning ropes some straight minimal techno, while newcomer Andrea Ferlin likes his minimal more hazy. Nôze and UND are mixed together into one before we are pulled back into minimal techno by Renato Figoli. Toro's minimal Latin groover is by Jorge Gebauhr and Reinhold himself, meeting the final track of the CD, a remix of "Supersnack" by Trapez core artist Oliver Hacke. The future looks bright for Trapez.

This is the sixth compilation in Trapez's Selection series, specially mixed by label co-owner and A&R of Traum, Trapez, MBF and MBF LTD, Triple R aka Riley Reinhold. Triple R sums up what has happened in 2007 and gives a preview of unreleased tracks to come in 2008. The 64-minute mix ironically casts off with a track by Riley himself which he has edited so that it functions as the intro for the CD. It mixes into Bülent Gürler's "Koala," a great bassy track that was featured on Loco Dice's Beatport Top 3 charts and was supported by Michael Mayer -- super cool and spooky. SLG's new groover "Earthworm" breaks into Bülent's track, and is a really cool Chicago funk track in the spirit of Daniel Bell's DBX ones. Reggy Van Oers' mover "Cytric" follows, mixing Carl Craig stings with minimal techno -- a real exception in the world of minimal today. It runs into the trancy track "Endless Ride," produced by the wonderful duo Salvatore Freda & Massimo Steffanelli. Red Robin & Jakob Hilden present "Snapdragon," a bold and super bassy monumental techno production that gets everybody moving on the dancefloor. The label's first Greek artist Mihalis Safras is a madman in the studio -- from his productions with Mark Broom to his incredible work on the Minimise label, he pumps out two dazzling and never before released tracks. The "Disco Bus" track by Aquilina & Venturi features a groundbreaking rhythm and has all kinds of special DJs like Jeff Samuel going wild. Alex Under returns to set new standards with electro-experimentation and, to close things off, Mauler aka Fabrice Lig, twists his Roland 101 bass line into heaven. Also featuring 3 Channels, Massi DL, Alexi Delano & Xpansul, Roland Dill and Florian Meindl.

Trapez celebrates the 100th release in their vinyl catalog with the Trapez 100 compilation -- cementing their role in the international techno scene for almost a decade. Trapez began in 2000 with an image of a label that was the opposite to parent-label Traum, with plenty of Detroit-influenced techno dance weapons specifically geared towards the DJ. Since their inception, Trapez has also been the first stop for artists that are now internationally-renowned, and to celebrate, Trapez 100 features exclusive, unreleased material and lots of curiosities. It all starts with a deep track that is a label-favorite, "Verse 2the Chorus" -- recorded by Donal Tierney aka Five Green Circle years ago, it is presented here in a remix by the Cologne duo, Salz. The UK's Raw Hedroom aka Gareth Williams has contributed another wonderfully deep track "Lauryn's Tokyo Bananas," and Trapez pays tribute to UND with the craziest track the label has ever released, "Fox In The Box," remixed by Christian Martin in a wobbly, west coast house version. Hot Cologne newcomer Roland M. Dill contributes a funky, rocking piece of music that is much more house-y and jacking than his previous releases, and the next track is a remix of Oliver Hacke's legendary "Der Vampir Von Düsseldorf" by Dirt Crew label owner, Break 3000. No samples of the original existed, and so he had to replay everything himself for a fantastic, monumental, grinding version. Dominik Eulberg has written a brand new techno track for this comp, and Gabriel Ananda also presents a new one that combines rocking and deep passages, creating a super flow and a stunning dynamic. Florian Meindl's tune "Blast" has been remixed by Berlin techno duo Format: B, who add their own signature to what was already a huge peak-time floor destroyer. Chris Gowland aka Gow stays on the comical and witty side, while Jeff Samuel presents a new funky track. The compilation concludes with a brand-new team-up from 3 Channels and SLG -- a dubby and atmospheric deep piece of techno.

Australian artist Luke Le Mans, resident in Kyoto for some time, is an important figure in the Japanese techno scene. He has been producing for a few years and is now releasing his first record on Trapez. Jerry, Spring Her! is a nice blend of classic Detroit techno with a modern version of acid, that can really shake the foundation of clubs. The A-side is a rhythm-machine, with a cool and rocking stop and go attitude/motion, quite percussive in a techno way and a nice techno tool. The B-side is a big acid track -- a strong mover that has an element to it that is missing in a lot of sets nowadays. Luke reduces the tweak of the 303 to a nice static feeling, rather than twisting the knobs in the old school way. He has a lot of experience as a DJ and gives his tracks a very nice flow, while being funky and warmhearted at the same time.

Double LP version. Trapez is happy to present Jeff Samuel's long-awaited first artist album entitled Step. After seven years of making music, "the 8-bit Tetris wizard" Jeff Samuel has produced a true classic LP, with tracks that rock the floor as well as tracks that are deep and melodic, sometimes even epic. The album has a strong songwriting link, although the music is still stripped down and jacking. Step was created during the spring of 2006, and Samuel continues in the melodic direction of his most recent releases on Trapez and Trapez Ltd, Bork and Endpoint. These tracks were conceived as part of a dancefloor album, but the extra steps and melodic sophistication makes especially the CD version (containing extra tracks) one which can be listened to in sequence. The title itself has many meanings: at its core, a step is an object to get from one level to another. His production elements have also been stepped up, including the use of strings on some tracks and even a short journey into broken beats on "Month 2 Month," both an ode to Detroit and to the struggle of living in the USA as a techno artist. Jeff's recent DJ sets have already been setting dance floors ablaze with album tracks like "Off The Mark" and "You Will Never Know," both featuring Samuel's trademark basslines and almost songlike hooks. With Step, Samuel consciously wanted to take his melodies as far as he could. While they have always been present in early works such as "Double Yum," "Knob" and "Fcote," they were never as outward and naked as on this LP. Could this album be his final statement in this direction? Maybe we will find out in another seven years.

Leeks has a cool techno attitude with swing-like programming and odd sounds. "Qwerty," for example, does not bow to the daily routine of "today's techno," but moves upright and proudly. "Not So Late" opens with an obscure electronic sound, but then has a big, house-y bass line drop in. "Adhesive" is a bit of a Dadaistic track... its cool rhythm production makes it the most advanced on this EP. Quirky, with a bit of a nonsense sequence running through it.

Mauler is a name used by three fictional characters appearing in the Marvel Comics universe. Both are masters at keeping the pace and making the right moves, with a nice stop-and-go action that makes people addictive to Bülent's groove, a beat that never stops.

"Move" starts out with static but soon reveals itself as a heavy, hypnotic clubber that works in some skillful repetition.

"Jah Wobble" is a crazy over the top tune, drums programmed in machine gun staccato rhythm with a wonderful East European sounding vocal announcing Jah Wobble in person. The flipside "Men On Earth" is a result of the collaboration between the Cologne based recording artist Emanuel Geller This track is a static mover with voluptuous and warm strings, reminding us of Tangerine Dream and early German Krautrock music fused with delicate acid particles over the vocal sample.

The track was originally produced in 2000 and released in 2001 by mysterious NYC label Remains with no artist or title information. Discovered years later, the record became a secret weapon of Hawtin, Villalobos, Daniel Bell, Sammy Dee, Jeff Milligan and many more. Created with only 6 samples and 1 directX reverb effect, "Lost" is a blueprint not only for the current minimal techno sound, but for "in the box" techno produced entirely via computer. Produced in the days before VSTI's and Ableton Live, this re-release reconfirms Samuel's place as a pioneer of software-based dance music production.
