Subtitled:
An Anthology Of Tribe Records: 1972-1976
. "Soul Jazz are re-issuing their long-out of print (10 years!) seminal CD and mini-book anthology of Tribe, the Detroit jazz and funk collective recently reformed by Carl Craig. CD and book comes in unique box edition. Tribe in Detroit in the early 1970s was born out of the ashes of a fallen city. After Motown, the boom of the car industry and the advances of civil rights in the 1960s, came a decade of governmental abandonment, high unemployment and inner-city violence and urban decay. Tribe (Phil Ranelin, Wendell Harrison, Harold McKinney, Marcus Belgrave) was a collective brought together to fight these negative forces. In the seven years it existed in Detroit, Tribe produced seminal deep jazz and funk albums, published
Tribe
magazine (featuring local community, music and arts issues) and ran numerous education workshops. Tribe have reformed in 2010, brought back together by producer genius Carl Craig with a new album and tour. This project follows on from Carl Craig's earlier Innerzone Orchestra and
Detroit Experiment
projects. Tribe is also heavily featured in Soul Jazz Records'
Freedom, Rhythm and Sound
book of revolutionary jazz. Soul Jazz Records are now re-issuing this Tribe anthology CD and mini-book (a 60-page exact reproduction of pages from the
Tribe
magazine from the early 1970s). This album features the best of the seminal music produced by this legendary Detroit collective."

Focusing on many of Brazil's folk songs and styles from the northern part of the country, this CD also features Batucadas and Brazilian jazz. Catalog #:
US 026CD
"Soul Jazz Records are re-issuing this lost classic deep jazz album. This is the only recording of Maulawi Nururdin and his group. Originally recorded in Chicago in Sep 1973, and released by a small independent label in Detroit the following year. The music fell between the gap of the avant-garde and straight-ahead jazz, and had elements of Funk and Latin that were rare at the time that meant that commercially it sank without a trace -- but, thirty years on, we can see that these are exactly the elements that help make it a unique album, years ahead of its time. Maulawi grew up in Chicago and, as the album sleeve states, was part of the great heritage of Chicago music that ranged from the electric blues of Muddy Waters, the straight ahead jazz of Ahmad Jamal, through to the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sun Ra, Anthony Braxton and other members of the avant-garde royalty. As a saxophonist he was also part of the tradition of great Chicago horn-players that includes Gene Ammons, Eddie Harris, Johnny Griffin and many more. Maulawi had led his own group since the 1960s and a number of young musicians came up through his group -- Billy Greenfield, Jack DeJohnette, Jerome Cooper and on this album a16 year old Adam Rudolph (who currently records on Soul Jazz Records as Hu Vibrational). Maulawi was a multi-instrumentalist and bandleader and although he specialised on saxophones, also played oboe, piano, drums and more. His career was on the periphery of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), the collective of avant-garde musicians in Chicago that included Richard Muhal Abrams, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and Amina Claudine Myers -- he was never a member but often played with those involved in this musical community, musicians such as Billy Brentfield and Fred Anderson. In 1973 the group went into the studio to record this one record for Strata Records in Detroit, an independent label run by Kenny Cox (who himself had led the Contemporary Jazz Quintet on Blue Note Records) and Charles Moore. A planned association that never worked out also led to the birth of another label, Strata East Records in New York, run by Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell."

"Soul Jazz Records continues it's occasional re-issuing of seriously collectable deep jazz records from the 1970s, on their subsidiary Universal Sound label, with this seminal release from saxophonist Nathan Davis (current eBay price £400!). The CD comes in full slipcase with sleevenotes, interview and pics and the vinyl edition is limited to 1000 copies worldwide - so be quick! The album
If
was released on Nathan Davis's tiny bespoke Tomorrow International record label in 1976 and only 1000 copies were ever pressed. Davis leads his super-funky group along the narrow path between jazz and funk that so many failed to navigate successfully in the second-half of the 1970s. It's an album by an artist who is a musician's musician. More importantly -- it's a killer! Nathan Davis's career has made him a connoisseur's favourite and his records are all extremely collectable. In the 1960s Davis was drafted into the US army, and was based in Germany and France (working with everyone from Art Blakey to Donald Byrd and Ray Charles). Davis also worked as musical director of a TV and radio station, wrote film scores, studied anthropology at the Sorbonne and released a number of important records. He returned to the US at the end of the 60s and continued to release a number of amazing jazz records -- all of which have now been long out of print. His avoidance of the major record industry, working instead with various small independent labels with limited distribution has made all his releases very collectible. But have no doubt; Davis is one of the most important jazz artists of his time with a 50-year career span that continues to this day. The early Tomorrow International releases, especially
If
have become serious collector's items, as indeed have most of Nathan Davis's catalogue of recordings. Today, more people want these records than when they were first made and demand outstrips supply. Those who own Nathan Davis albums don't sell them - and none more so than

"Soul Jazz are issuing this super-deep spiritual album from Edward Larry Gordon, aka Laraaji (Brian Eno collaborator). This 1978 debut album on his own private-press label (SWN Corp) was only ever pressed in 500 copies and has been unavailable for over 30 years. Edward Larry Gordon had his roots in funk and jazz but in the 1970s turned to both transcendental meditation and music to accompany meditation. A chance encounter with Brian Eno led to the release of Laraaji's
Days Of Radiance
for Brian Eno's seminal ambient series on EG Records in 1980.
Celestial Vibrations
was his first-ever album, self-recorded and self-financed. The music is a sublime blend of his jazz musical roots with the hypnotic music created for transcendental meditation -- producing one of the deepest, spiritual records you may ever hear in your life! Laraaji went on to expand his mystical life studying under gurus such as Swami Satchidananda and Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati, founder of the Ananda Ashram in Monroe, New York. He has released over 50 albums since
Celestial Vibration
mainly produced solely for use in meditation schools. He is currently a Laughter Master and teaches enlightenment through his 'Laughter Meditation Workshops' which he presents around the world."

"Drummer and composer Pheeroan AkLaff's
House of Spirit:Mirth
featured in Soul Jazz Record's recent revolutionary jazz covers book compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records). This album was originally released in 1979 on the composer Oliver Lake's bespoke private-press label Passin Thru' Inc., a not for profit label 'dedicated to fostering, promoting and advancing the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the arts.' Consequently
House of Spirit
remains one of the most elusive deep jazz releases of its time to collectors. Aklaff was an original of the Detroit jazz scene of the early 70s alongside musicians of the Tribe (Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, Doug Hammond) and Strata collective (Kenny Cox and Charles Moore) and local luminaries such as Travis Biggs before moving to New York in the mid-1970s to work at the centre of the vibrant loft/radical jazz scene. Here he worked and recorded with original greats such as Oliver Lake, Wadada Leo Smith, Anthony Davis (with numerous releases on India Navigation and other radical NY avant-jazz labels). At this time Coltrane drummer Rashied Ali became mentor to AkLaff , with Aklaff practically living at Ali's legendary club/live space 'Ali's Alley'.
House of Spirit: Mirth
is one of the most radical of deep jazz releases of its time. Avant-garde beyond a doubt but with an Afro-centric rhythmical intensity hard to find in the myriad of independent free/loft jazz recorded in New York at the time. This bespoke perfect replica reissue comes in a limited edition hardback box-case CD edition."

"Dave Lee Jr was born in New Orleans and the deep hypnotic and experimental jazz music featured on
Evolution
is as rooted in New Orleans rhythmically as it is in the spiritual and metaphysical musical ideas of John Coltrane, Sun Ra and other futurist soul-searchers. Originally released in New York in 1974, the album
Evolution
was self-funded and released as a private-pressing and as holy grail record rarities in the world go, this album ranks high with only around 400 copies ever pressed. Growing up in New Orleans, during the 1960s Lee became a part of the city's thriving rhythm and blues scene playing sessions with everyone from Eddie Bo to Willie Tee, before moving to New York in the 1970s as part of Roy Ayer's group and also working with Lonnie Liston Smith, Harold Alexander, Leon Thomas and many other talented artists as a session drummer, recording for radical independent labels such as Flying Dutchman, Strata-East and India Navigation. Complete with full sleevenotes and text. Comes in Soul Jazz limited edition special box edition and slipcase CD."

Washington Suite
has been an extremely rare serious collector's deep spiritual jazz album ever since, going for many hundreds of pounds at auction. African-American flute player Lloyd McNeill's self-distributed record label ran from 1968-73. Lloyd McNeill is a multidisciplinary artist -- a painter who lived in Paris in 1965 and was a friend of Picasso, a musician who has worked with Nina Simone, Nana Vasconceles, Ron Carter, Cecil McBee and many more and a music anthropologist, poet and teacher. In the 1960s he was involved in the civil-rights movement and produced music for ballet, paintings and installations.

"In the early 1970s pianist and composer Adegoke Steve Colson and vocalist Iqua Colson were both members of The Association for Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), the radical home of jazz music in Chicago, and spiritual home of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. In 1980, Colson released

"Edu Lobo is one of the towering giants of Brazilian music to emerge out of the Bossa Nova scene in Brazil in the 1960s with this, his stunning debut album in 1965. Released on the seminal Elenco Records label, producer Aloysio de Oliveira enlisted the help of the greatest bossa jazz group ever, The Tamba Trio (led by Luiz Eça), to help launch the gifted singer, songwriter Lobo into the spotlight. As well as his own classic compositions (which he often wrote for singers such as Elis Regina), Lobo also collaborated with the greatest lyricists such as Vinicius de Moraes and the radical left-wing film-maker Ruy Guerra, to produce some of the most important songs in Brazilian music, songs such as 'Reza', 'Arrastao', 'Boranda' (all featured here) and many more. His complex music helping pave the way for the emergence of the new musical movement, Musica Popular Brasileira, which replaced Bossa Nova in the mid-1960s. This is a bespoke high quality box-edition CD of this seminal album with exact-reproduction artwork of the original album, never before released outside Brazil."

"The Tamba Trio were one of the most important musical groups to emerge out of the Bossa Nova movement in Brazil in the 1960s. The group released their debut album,
Avanço
, in 1963 on Philips Brazil. Led by the young genius pianist, arranger and composer Luiz Eça, and formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1963, the Tamba Trio became the central group at the legendary Bottle's Bar - home of the Bossa Nova in Beco das Garrafas - where they played alongside the many stars of the day such as Elis Regina, Carlos Lyra, Nara Leão and Edu Lobo. The group's unique and highly distinctive bossa jazz and vocals style was to prove highly influential in the development of boss nova, never more so than on their amazing original version of 'Mas Que Nada', written by Jorge Ben and featured here. This is a bespoke high quality box-edition CD of this seminal album with exact-reproduction artwork of the original album, never before released outside Brazil."

"Roy Brooks and the Artistic Truth's
Black Survival
album is a true holy-grail for deep and spritual jazz collectors around the world.
Black Survival
is reissued here, digitally remastered and cased in bespoke original artwork exact reproduction on hardboard Japanese-style box case CD. This album was originally independently released to raise funds to combat the ongoing drought in the Sahel region of Africa (an area covering parts of Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Chad, Darfur, Sudan and Ethiopia). In his long and distinguished career, the legendary Detroit-born drummer Brooks played with everyone from Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders, Max Roach, Charles Mingus. From 1959-64 he was in the Horace Silver Quintet performing on classic Blue Note albums such as
Song For My Father
. During his lifetime Brooks released precious few solo albums. His debut,
Beat
, was released in 1963 on Motown's then new off-shoot jazz label Jazz Workshop. His connection with his hometown label dated back to his time working with The Four Tops. In 1972, Brooks formed the Artistic Truth.
Black Survival
, the Sahel Concert at the Town Hall was originally released on the small independent Im-Hotep Records in Harlem in 1974 (which also released Brook's earlier Ethnic Expressions). After many years on the New York jazz scene, Brooks returned to Detroit in 1975, where he continued to perform with the Artistic Truth as well as forming the collective Musicians United to Save Indigenous Culture (MUSIC) along with Strata founder Kenny Cox and members of the Tribe collective, Wendell Harrison and Harold McKinney."
