In just a few years' time, Berlin's Upon You has established itself as a leading figure in European club culture, not just as a label for its 35+ well received 12" EPs, but also for its curated nights at world-renowned spots like Berghain, Watergate and Arena Club. With their combined experience of producing, DJing and promoting, company founders Marco Resmann, Marcus Meinhardt and Hawks Grunert have formed a powerhouse whose momentum shows no signs of slowing down. In spite of (and perhaps because of) its unpigeonhole-able stylistic approach, Upon You has become a respected source for all DJs and clubbers in search of forward-thinking sounds, and now with its first full-length compilation, the label offers a succinct overview for both followers and newcomers. Upon You Diary No. 1 has been compiled by Marco Resmann (half of Luna City Express) and is split into two parts: the first features 13 new, exclusive tracks from the label's roster including The Cheapers, Re-UP, ONNO and Mathias Mesteņo. The second part, showcasing Resmann's dynamic DJ ability, is meticulously stitched together using elements of 25 tracks from Upon You's back catalog, including contributions by Holger Zilske, Catz 'n Dogz, Mathias Kaden, Luna City Express, and many other respected names. On the surface, the artists on Diary No. 1 clearly follow the tradition of techno and house music, but it's clear that many of them use these forms as merely a starting point for further auditory exploration. From tropical acid and tribal grooves to somber dub and hypnotic minimal, it's clear that Upon You doesn't hold any purist attitudes, and in fact, cross-pollination is encouraged: check Channel X's be-bop hoedown "Rodeo" and the laid-back blue-eyed funk of "Together" by Marek Hemmann. Diary serves as both an up-to-date survey of Upon You in 2010 as well as a reflection on its origins, with the knowledge that there are many blank pages to be filled out. The compilation is available as an elegantly packaged 2CD set and as a digital download. Even after the success of Diary No. 1 -- Upon You's first CD label compilation -- it was clear that the Berlin crew wasn't through with their adventures and had every intention to keep documenting them. With nearly 70 releases in their catalog and with recurring label nights held in their hometown's top clubs (Berghain/Panorama Bar and Watergate), Upon You felt it was time to make another full-length statement in the form of Diary No. 2, compiling 12 new, exclusive tracks, showing the label's wide sonic spectrum within the realm of techno and house music. But this isn't just some uninspired victory lap. Whereas the first edition was curated by Marco Resmann (who co-runs Upon You along with Hawks Grunert), this time the honor goes to DJ/producer Marcus Meinhardt, a core member of the Upon You artistry and bookings roster as well as co-founder of the legendary HomeSweetHome party series in Berlin. Another core difference here is that while the first compilation focused solely on their own home-grown talent, this sequel invites some international like-minded friends in on the action -- such as Mark Henning, Douglas Greed, The Glitz, Melohman, Javi Bora, Santorini and RifRaf -- in addition to regulars like Gunnar Stiller, Pele and ONNO & Marcus Gehring. From pristine pulsations to clattering percussion, from warm timbres to frigid synths, Diary No. 2 covers all the bases, in line with the rich past of techno and house, but clearly without any retro fetishism. Douglas Greed sets the tone with the seductive opener "Sense," featuring the demure Delhia de France while RifRaf contributes the fuzzy, buggy "Down From Heaven" which demands the fog machine be cranked up to 11. One of the compilation's highlights is the first collaboration between Marco Resmann and Emerson Todd, the bewitching "Cursed," which seems to melt sine waves until they evaporate in the air. In between more spartan and darker moments, The Glitz and Nico Stojan lighten the mood with their respective looney tunes "Orange Blossom" -- which would definitely make it into Woody Woodpecker's DJ bag -- and "Inflagranti" -- the kind of track that makes you think you have 5.1 ears on your head. And of course, tastemaker Meinhardt wouldn't neglect to include himself, here bringing a slice of colorful, synthetic Tropicalia titled "Splash." Finally, up-and-coming duo Melohman & Javi Bora close out the collection on a graceful, somber note with the operatic "Moldavia."

The name Reise nach Jerusalem stands for the game moving chairs that Ruede still remembers from his east German child hood. The principles of the track will be recognized by those who know the game. To all others, the A1 side will appear to be a mean techno pusher. 'Aron Habrit' also surprises the inclined listener with unexpected curves of tension but still remains on the house ground of reality and digs like 'Levithan' towards the thick underbrush of pre-Christian mythology that Ruede seemed to, in any way, have heard of in one of those Brandenburg Kibbuzes. "Mathias Mesteno is introducing his family: Andrea, Melinda and Bettina are the wives of his three brothers. Andrea favorably likes to wear a summer house shirt in size A1 that Mathias made himself for the upcoming open air season. She especially feels comfortable when her cloth is heard vibrating throughout the breaks. On the other hand, Melinda seems to have found her luck in the dark B1 evening gown together with the smooth ringing jingle bells hat Mathias conjures her under a blanket of warm baselines. And Bettina is mostly exited about dubby B2 folklore that never sounded so homie like on this record. We don't really believe that the Mestenos are from Denmark anymore. "Our man from Italy hits base again! He was the first house-agent that we've send out on a pure digital Upon You mission. He mastered it with such bravery that our Headquater see it worthwhile to hit session two on vinyl. In phase A1 he successfully recovered a whole row of bad house replicates under the code name 'Shadittz' to bring back the good taste. 'Back from the middle' is the motto in Phase A2, essentially contributing the bust of a few lousy tech-house bosses that where about to sell scuzzy loops to minors. His work was very useful for us and an easy seizing for mr. superbrain Tolga Fidan who could complete the mission as our remix profiler."

"The travel reports of the Wilderness EP Part 1 & 2 follows a documentation of a time when The Cheapers were together in a dark vault and they were only attending the on-going outer world through a 'white hole.' In Chapter A1 they report about the mundane mess that interfuses through the small opening into their facultative dungeon. They aim towards their profile and fill their surface with melody and intoxication. B1 describes bass eruptions in front of the 'White House' and while buzzing, pouring oil onto the strings of their piano, to prove the efficiency of renewable sound energies. Their mission was successfully kept a secret until rising winds released the manuscript, blowing them out of the darkness to the CD of the current Groove-Magazine. The Cheapers have given us a track that is slightly more 'Technoide' than what we have become used to, with an absolute 'bass beast' called 'Madame Sans Merci' on A1. Mr. Mesteno has given us the second part of 'Tante Dunkel' (once again paying homage to one of Copenhagen's most illustrious night creatures) with this house track. The first part was released on our last Home Sweet Home compilation. After flipping the vinyl, B1 unveils Channel X's last offering before releasing their debut album on Stil Vor Talent in the beginning of 2010, making us all the more pleased about this dependable club track. B2 is reserved for our Dutch colleague ONNO's kicking tech house track that shows that Upon You know how to start out the new year in the right way."

Friends of Marco Resmann remix tracks from his album Upon You. Ramon Tapia's remix of "Sao Paulo Lights" is knee-deep in bass harmonies mixed with beautiful house chords. Israel-based producers Deep'a and Biri present three jackin' house tracks. With previous releases on Kammer, Trapez and Rotary Cocktail, their darker house style finds its way onto Upon You. "Barzilay Grooves" is dedicated to the Tel Aviv club where Deep'a is a resident and salutes the vibrant energy of the city. "Emergence" subtly pushes itself forward then rolls over everything in its path. "Hova" keeps the mystical suspense level up, adding a bouncier tom-groove to round things off perfectly.

Marcus Meinhardt has the bow strings pulled tight and is aiming for the techno heart of the dancefloor with this release for Upon You. On "Trouble," the arrow subtly touches the souls of the crowd, making Eros faint with jealousy in front of the DJ booth. "Restart" is a track from deep within the techno-boiler that goes in the same hypnotic direction, to a place where the night's haze rises into the sky and is carried by exalted hands.

Danish foreign affairs correspondent Mathias Mesteņo has returned after an extensive visit to Chicago Soundscapes, managing to sneak a suitcase full of classic house tracks through customs. Mesteņo's crafty little fingers have combined three decades of musical history with samples and inspiration, long breaks and warm kick drums, turning them into modern club tracks. "Buckskin" pounds with its dusty boiler beats, while "El Mestengo" proudly grooves itself. As to be expected, the Chicago expert proves that he's fearless with "Bareback."

This is Emerson Todd's first release on Upon You. Born in New Zealand but living in Australia, his track "Eureka" goes back to the days of the Australian gold rush. But the other side of the coin isn't made of cheap tin, either. "Counter Point" keeps on digging, looking for buried acoustic treasure and "Vertigo" shimmers mystically. If you listen closely to "Eureka" and "Counter Point," you will find some great vocals by Mey.

Gunnar Stiller produces dancefloor destroyers -- even if "Far From OK" sounds a bit like a floor wax accident, there's no need for the timid raver soul to get worried about slipping and falling. Soft accords sedate the mind, the bass pumps and a voice softly whispers that everything is going to be just fine. When Loko mops the floor with his remix, you can even walk over it on the highest of high heels. Then, on "Some Kind Of Weird" the smoke machine REALLY starts spewing.

"Actually, this Frenchman's plan was to become more 'sensible' -- well he is in his 30s, has a family and a regular job.
