"Until recently, cumbia has been anything but cool in Buenos Aires. For decades, Argentinian trendsetters wanted no part of this traditional folkdance music of Colombian origin. With its repetitive percussion, cheesy keyboards, and trite lyrics, cumbia was often dismissed as music for the lower classes and the rural areas outside of Buenos Aires. A new crop of Buenos Aires cumbia DJs and producers has recently emerged with a different perspective, citing the 'M.I.A. phenomenon' as being responsible for the style's emergence. As BA dubstep/grime wizard Daleduro explains: 'In 2005, there was a global movement to look to the third world for new kinds of beats. In Buenos Aires that manifested [itself] as people taking a look at cumbia.' Last year these artists found a home with the launch of Zizek, a weekly night that now takes place at the venerable Niceto Club in the city's ultra-trendy Palermo neighborhood. Serving as the city's unofficial cumbia clubhouse, Zizek is one of the few places to escape punchi punchi, the omnipresent Euro dance music that dominates the Buenos Aires club scene. We are proud to present the 1st release on the new Zizek label, which presents a cross-section of producers and sounds from their 'urban beats club.'"

"When Diplo played at Zizek in Buenos Aires, he flipped over the stuff they gave him and blew it up on the Mad Decent podcast the next week. Now everyone's warming to these off-kilter sounds and we're happy to help spread the word with this extract from the full-length CD. The Dead Menems have been making experimental cumbia for almost a decade now. This is their hit remixed by Cumbia Beat producer, El Remolon. Straight to the danceflooor! The dad of one of Fauna's MCs is the founder of the humanist movement. His son spits sick lyrics over raw digital cumbia beats and is also creating his own movement. El Trip Selector's 'Coombia Del Piano Triste' was one of the biggest dancefloor hits at Zizek. Nim & Maestroshao features one of Argentina's best hip-hop MCs, rapping over one of Zizek's resident DJs beats. 'Nuff said. Chancha Via Circuito is the newest hottest 'New Cumbia' producer around. Look out for his EP later this year. Marcelo Fabian continues his vision of experimental IDM cumbia with the title track off his latest EP."

Artist: CHANCHA VIA CIRCUITO
Title: Rodante
Label: ZIZEK RECORDS
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: ZZK 003CD
"As the Zizek cumbiatrain rolls on, it's appropriate that the second release for this Argentine label is from an artist named after a train. The train in question is 'La Chancha' (the pig) and the line that Pedro Canale takes to his hometown, 30 miles out of Buenos Aires, is the 'Circuito' (circle). Chancha explores the minimal side of cumbia digital, influenced through images caught in his head, snapped from train windows. Sparse beats are interspersed with female vocals and there's the signature cry of 'cumbia' that rings out in many of his tracks. Computer bleeps share sonic space with folkloric chant. Candombe drums are accompanied by the sample of a machete splicing the air and a vocal line of indigenous bebop over hints of drum&bass. Chancha is popping off all over the web, you can find mixes, remixes, and blog entries galore (check his 2 tracks on the new Jahdan Blakkamoore CD on Dutty Artz), you can even check him live on tour in the States while you wait for his CD to come out. There's also an EP of instrumentals and mash-ups that relate to the CD release going into production as we speak."
