Marc Richter aka Black To Comm released his debut record 20 years ago. In 2023, he is still busy releasing music under various disguises and is currently signed to the Thrill Jockey label. To celebrate this anniversary his own Cellule 75 label is re-releasing some classic out-of-print vinyl albums that originally came out on the defunct Type and De Stijl labels. After releasing the critically acclaimed Alphabet 1968 on the seminal Type label (Grouper, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Yellow Swans), Richter chose De Stijl for this 2012 album. Earth is a 2009 silent film by Ho Tzu Nyen, one of Singapore's foremost visual artists. After hearing Black To Comm's Alphabet 1968, Ho Tzu Nyen invited Richter to accompany the film at Berlin's Asian Film Festival, Unsound in Krakow and several other art biennials and music festivals around the world. Includes full color lyric sheet and poster.
From the original De Stijl one-sheet: "Richter's already formidable expressive power stretches over all of Earth. Reflecting the countless cyclical forces that make up, oh, more or less everything we know and are, the music on Earth is bracing, lovely, bustling and still, and at times bittersweet, a commingling of sensations and emotions that can't be neatly separated from one another. (Earth is complex, as you know.) Guests on Earth include David Aird, aka Vindicatrix, contributing startling vocal work; Renate Nikolaus on an array of instruments and noise devices; Rutger Zuydervelt (singing bowls); and Christopher Kline (singing saw). Earth is Black to Comm's seventh album and his debut for De Stijl, following the acclaimed Alphabet 1968 (on Type) and last year's vinyl-only collaboration with Mike Kelley of Destroy All Monsters (on the En/Of label)."

"DJ/Producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad is a hip-hop icon. As one-third of legendary hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest, his influence and impact on the musical landscape is still felt today. Last year, Muhammad received an invitation from Adrian Younge to work on fellow Golden Era legends Souls of Mischief's There Is Only Now. He narrated the album, playing a DJ for fictional local Oakland radio station K-NOW, while providing background music to accompany the narration. The results were impressive enough to ignite a creative burst in the two producers that quickly produced an album's worth of material in a matter of weeks. Excited to support the There Is Only Now album, Muhammad got to work on a ten-track remix album that carefully re-imagines the original. Looking for a different mix and sound, Muhammad shares, 'I wanted to make it as emotional and moving as the original compositions. So even though it's a remix, it has the feeling of an original work. But bringing something else to the sound.'"

Double LP version. Comes in a gatefold sleeve. "Every producer's dream is to one day complete and release a full-length album. After a string of well-received 12" singles on my own label, Emphasis Recordings, and most recently, on labels like Aesthetic Audio, Machining Dreams, Syncrophone, and Dolly, I thought now is the time to start realizing that dream of the full-length album. The idea for the album really started around year 1999 and/or 2000, when I completed the tracks, "Interstice,' 'It's Perceived as Sound,' and 'Brink Of Dawn.' When the tracks were done, I felt they were better-suited for an album release because I experimented outside of the typical 4/4 dance track. I wanted to experiment with ambient music; like something without a kick drum, or different time signatures, which led me to creating a jazz tune using electronic instruments. 'It's Perceived as Sound' was conceived in that way. But putting an album out during that time would not have garnished the impact that I wanted, since I was still a relatively unknown artist. So I put the tracks aside. Over the last decade, I worked on many more 12' singles to get my name out there, while still working on tracks that I thought would suit the album. Tracks like 'Eternal' and 'Heat Burst,' produced back in 2011, help add to this album some of that Chicago/ Detroit vibe that I've been known for. As I was getting close to finishing the album, I was thinking which label should release it? The first thing that came to my mind was Smallville. I read two interviews on blogs featuring Smallpeople, aka Julius Steinhoff and Just Von Ahlefeld, who also run the label and store out of Hamburg. In each of the interviews, they mentioned me by name. I thought to myself, 'these guys really like my music!' Since having visited Hamburg three times now, I got to know the label, the people behind it, and thought my project and I would be a good fit. So I decided to send an email to Julius and Just to see if they were interested in releasing the album. They said yes, so here I am, proud to present to you, as well as Smallville, my debut album entitled Disconnect to Connect." --Steven Tang, Chicago, May 2013
