Aeroplane's eagerly anticipated debut album We Can't Fly arrives with sky-high hopes. The Belgian duo with Italian roots established themselves as party-starting DJs and remixers-du-jour with their spacious cosmic-disco re-rubs of Grace Jones, Friendly Fires, and Sebastien Tellier, and as leaders of the nu-disco and Balearica scene. Having amicably parted company with his band mate Stephen Fasano, Vito De Luca continues Aeroplane as a one-man operation. Recorded in Toulouse, Paris, London and Los Angeles, and co-produced by Bertrand Burgalat, We Can't Fly is a grown up, dazzlingly accomplished album that showcases not just a passion for stately, soulful disco and early '80s electronica, but a lush and bittersweet set of influences that stretches from Abba and film soundtracks to Floyd, the Stones and Italian crooners. This melting pot provides the backdrop to Aeroplane's 21st century take on Balearic house. "We Can't Fly" is a languid, show-stopping anthem-to-be. The widescreen, string-splashed "Mountains Of Moscow" is the soundtrack to the best '80s blockbuster you've never seen, while "London Bridge" and "Point Of No Return" are mini-epics of spiraling, Floydian guitar riffs and plaintive Tangerine Dream synths. Another mighty inspiration was Giorgio Moroder, whose gleaming electronic scores fed into the vintage disco stylings of "My Enemy" and the propulsive, piano-led "Superstar." The latter features vocoder vocals from Vito himself, but Moroder was so impressed, that he has already laid down the vocals for an alternative version of the track. Also featured is the raucous, razor-blade rock of "I Don't Feel," with the formidable vocals of Merry Clayton, who backed Jagger on Vito's favorite Stones song, "Gimme Shelter." Other guest singers include: Nicolas Ker, the frontman of French/Italo-disco outfit Poni Hoax, who adds a sullen élan to "Fish In The Sky," an electro torch song worthy of Human League, while dream-pop outfit Au Revoir Simone breathe delicate harmonies over the woozy ballad "We Fall Over," and London's Jonathan Jeremiah transforms "Good Riddance" into a low-slung slice of honky-tonk soul. Perhaps the most ear-catching turn comes from the precocious L.A. teen-vixen Sky Ferreira on "Without Lies," a cover of a song by the Belgian screen star Marie Gillain. We Can't Fly promises to take Aeroplane's passengers on a first class round-trip of electronic psychedelia. Includes a CD version of the album.

This is the long-awaited single taken from Aeroplane's debut album We Can't Fly (ESK 503796 ). "My Enemy" is definitely the most dancefloor-oriented track on there, but nevertheless, Eskimo included a blinder of a remix package for you. Rex The Dog makes "My Enemy" even more epic, or should we say "arpeggiotic?!" The legendary Green Velvet, on the other hand, turns it into an unmatched, rolling monster for the dancefloor. If that's the enemy, we wanna make up.

In recent years, Aeroplane has been carefully selecting the best of all the new music released every month to turn it into the "Aeroplane Chart Mixes," gaining a lot of attention and a non-stop growing fan base on the internet, and followers on the official Aeroplane Soundcloud, with each mix getting between 30,000 and 45,000 plays and quickly becoming blogosphere favorites. The next step was when Aeroplane decided to make it "official." His mixes became a radio show called "In-Flight Entertainment," played every last Friday of the month on Belgian national radio station PureFM, with the mix becoming available on the Aeroplane Soundcloud right after it was aired on the radio. The constantly-rising interest made the "In-Flight Entertainment" mix series really influential in the dance music scene, pushing artists to send music to Aeroplane upfront to include in his mixes, turning them into something more and more exclusive. Also Aeroplane's constant search for new music and his obsessive need to listen to everything he receives gave him the opportunity to discover a lot of newcomers he would feature on the mixes, which would help to put them on the music map. With this history, an Aeroplane mix CD couldn't be anything simple, it needed to be special. He wanted it to be ahead of its time and he wanted it to be 100% exclusive. Teaming up with all his friends and producers from all around the world, he put together a collection of songs that have never been heard before, some of them being made especially for the compilation with, as usual, a lot of space for young producers. Even Aeroplane rolls up his sleeves to contribute with an exclusive Aeroplane track. But what does it sound like? Lately, the so-called nu-disco/Balearic producers have been asked to "collaborate" with the pop music world by remixing mainstream pop artists, turning their songs into warm and sexy disco anthems, and giving those artists visibility in the blog world and the club scene. It often happened that those remixes became more popular than the originals. Aeroplane's remixes of Grace Jones' "William's Blood," Robbie Williams' "Bodies" or Friendly Fires' "Paris" are good examples of that. But Aeroplane wants to believe that the time has come for all those artists he supported to get to the next level, and to put their time and talent into becoming the new pop acts. With radio starting to playlist more and more of them, even playlisting the remixes rather than the originals, he thought the time was right. So that's what it sounds like. Pop music filled with catchy hooks and disco grooves, updated to 2011 -- or should we say 2012? Artists include: Poolside, Bxentric, Herr Styler, Drop Out Orchestra, Martin Dubka, Stars On 33, Kolombo, Michael Parker, RipTide, Cosmonauts, Oliver, James Curd, Devin Byrnes and Moonlight Matters.
