"2001 Aphex Twin single! Released on mystery label Men, first single since the massive 'Windowlicker;. 2 excellent, new percussive/melodic recordings by AFX in the style of AFX. A track 1: 120 bpm / 4? 59" / bears the inscription 'squidged out at the bank by afx'. B track 2: 168 bpm / 6? 30" / cockney raver's voice halfway thru track, recounting his experiences of 'E'. B track 3: bonus high frequency sounds. Vinyl format is a white label 12" in a standard paper innersleeve. There is a sticker on one label and also in the centre/top of the sleeve . Very nice, dj-friendly cut. CD format is a plain CD, with the words '2 remixes by afx' on the disc and a similar sticker to the vinyl format affixed to the centre/top/front of a standard clear plastic album jewel case." This has nothing to do with the "new" post-"Windowlicker" Aphex Twin single as implied above, but instead features classic acid remixes of tracks from 808 State ("Flow Coma") & DJ Pierre. Pure insanity in the spirit of 1988 (anybody who doesn't own Newbuild should go ahead and fall down). Plus a couple minutes of bonus Aphex sine-tones at the end. No packaging, because who fucking needs it.

Throughout 2005, and with little fanfare, Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) released the Analord series of 12"s under the AFX moniker on his label Rephlex. In total, 41 tracks were released over a series of singles -- Analord Volumes 1-11. Each record went on to sell into five-figure quantities -- on vinyl format ONLY! The tracks were not available for download or on CD, making this a considerable sales achievement. For fans of Aphex Twin, it was an almost unprecedented bounty of new material in the gap since the 2001 double album, Drukqs, but many people who have abandoned their turntables will have remained unaware of this hive of activity. Now, Rephlex releases Chosen Lords: rather than release a triple CD featuring all 41 tracks, AFX himself has distilled the tunes into a cohesive album, as it was intended to be heard. Chosen Lords is, in fact, the first full album of new material from Richard D. James since Drukqs, and the word of mouth is that the tracks are among his very best classics. The style? As with most Richard D. James releases, it's hard to pin it down to any one genre. Largely recorded on Richard's private collection of analog synthesizers -- vintage, modern and home-made, the rhythms, melodies, harmonies, and even some subliminal lyrics have all evolved directly from the machines. One could say Chosen Lords is partly-inspired by NY electro, Chicago house and Detroit techno classics, but the album also stimulates the kind of "lucid dreaming" atmospherics found on Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Many people try to imitate Richard's sound, but he remains an unrivaled innovator when it comes to the emotional and musical depth and complexity of his tracks. Chosen Lords is Richard D. James at the peak of his powers, in the prime of life. Unmissable.

"To celebrate the 10th anniversary of their original release, Warp have reissued the legendary Hangable Auto Bulb EPs on a single CD. As vital a historic document as there is in electronic music, the EPs were the very first to introduce the complex, cut-up breaks that have since become synonymous with Aphex Twin's work, from Richard D. James and I Care Because You Do, right through to Drukqs and the Analord series. They have of course also inspired countless other producers in the intervening years. Originally limited to only a few thousand copies each, the two HAB volumes have become extremely rare collectors' items, and are arguably the most valuable and sought-after of the entire Warp catalogue.
