"This is a selective and very nice collection Ellen Allien has offered us. She stays active remixing next to her own productions -- that we know. Here we have yet again and comprehensively all the small remix pieces from 1995 - 2003 that comprise her vinyl releases served to you in one dish. There is even a little extra: Ellen Allien's Gold Chains Remix has been released along with it and belongs to the most recent ones. The inspiration for the remix collection came rather spontaneously. Ellen Allien packed all remixes in a pretty iPod, and that's how she passed time on planes. By now some of them belong to her favorite tracks. Maybe the remix collection is simply a testament to her own life filled with all the gigs, travels, own releases etc., which also includes remixing or achieving the thing in itself. It's perhaps an exercise in memory, as it seems, since Ellen Allien combines many personal things with what she does. It is remarkable however how many ingredients she juggles freely while always maintaining her own style as if it were an automated signature... "Berlinette firstly draws upon the album title itself revealing Ellen Allien's identification with the city. Ellen Allien has found the key to her Self in this international context when one considers the philosophical notion pertaining to the experience of one's person through a relation to the other, i.e. the quasi dialectic of an I with an Other. She is continuously set in relation to Berlin, especially abroad. Berlinette is thus supposed to reflect this precise experience without any pretense for irony. The presentation of her label BPitch Control also happens this way. Ellen Allien not only delivers the feeling of Berlin city, but also offers her own experiential horizon defined by network structures and the idea of autocracy and independence. Individual systems make way for a tight co-operative in the collective. Ellen Allien allowed herself little time to complete Berlinette. One should under no circumstance understand her second album conceptually. "With the 'Your Body is my Body' remixes, Ellen Allien follows the course she has established with 'Magma' and her third album Thrills: Dance, lose control, turn your inside out! Troy Pierce's mix comes across as a calm, minimal version, sprucing up Ellen's elechtech from a straightforward, hypnotic angle. Pierce turns it into a neat dance floor track. All you wanna do is nod your head to the beat to forget where you are. Later on, you might ask yourself what that name on your door is supposed to mean. And of course, the Minus-BPitch Control connection is a welcome revival of the old Detroit-Berlin axis. "Go" is an allusion to Ellen Allien's very first track, "Just Let the Groove Go" (1994), using the vocals as the basis for a dark and ethereal new version. Marcel Dettmann still plays the original version in his sets and now presents his own rework. Both versions use the same vocal sample but combine it with different beats -- Allien goes for hypnotic, dry beats, while Dettmann goes for dub-tech à la Hardwax. This is the eagerly-awaited fourth installment in BPitch Control's Boogy Bytes series, mixed by the label queen herself, Ellen Allien. Allien describes this mix as "emotional, noisy, trippy, weird and sexual," an apt characterization of her typology of sound that is perhaps more crooked, more abstract or technoid than others, but with a seamless queue of artists that you can't help but be excited about. As a DJ, she maintains that emotional and direct contact to the audience always comes first -- likewise, she tries to anticipate all the facets and interactions of daily life where music is a companion, whether it be dancefloor, airport, studio, office or living room. For example, the bass drum is not set into the foreground, obviously, neither should it dominate the feelings of the listener. Ellen Allien sketches a voyage that consists of a generous arrangement of tracks that allows space and room for the listener's own perception of the music and what he or she might add based on their own mood and experiences. 2007 was a special year for Allien, and also for electronic music "made in Europe" and so, that element resonates within the mix.
