Title:
Label:
NOTHING
Format:
CD
Price:
$15.50
Catalog #:
INTD 90258
The fifth album from Manchester's duo of Sean Booth and Rob Brown is Autechre's most detailed and insane collection of electronic specification. Number crunching at a new fully realized peak, sledding past the masses of insignificant humanity at an alarming rate. Some people have been waiting their entire life for just this album. Referred to as
LP5
in the UK, America will have to just deal with
Autechre
. Exponentially the next step from
Incunabula
,
Amber
,
Tri Repetae
& and it's most significant forebearer,
Chiastic Slide
. One of the records that will define 1998. [now packaged in the US in a lame b&w generic sleeve by the laughable Nothing organization]

NOTHING
Format:
CD
Price:
$8.50
Catalog #:
INTD 95039
As with most red-blooded facsimiles of human life, it's hard to fathom Autechre music being released on Trent Reznor's Nothing label. Even Cleopatra could conceivably be better. And it's not like it's even a penny cheaper than the Warp version. But I suppose the possibility exists that Trent himself laced up one of his leather boots while stepping on
your
copy of this release, so line up and take your chances. It will never taste the same again. This Peel Session features 3 previously unreleased tracks -- 25 minutes of music. Originally recorded on 10/13/95 on John Peel's UK Radio 1 show. Track list: "milk dx"/"inhake"/"drane".

Price:
$14.50
Catalog #:
WARP 017CD
New domestic mid-line reissue; previous US edition on TVT is now deleted. The debut full-length from the duo of Sean Booth and Rob Brown, originally issued in 1993 as one of the final installments in Warp's Artificial Intelligence series. Autechre would follow this up with
Amber
,
Tri Repetae
,
Chiastic Slide
etc. -- a perfect progression of electronic sound imagery, from the ambient-scape, lushly atmospheric moodiness of the early works to the crunch-process specification that has become so insanely detailed on the later albums.

WARP 025CD
New domestic mid-line reissue; previous U.S. edition on TVT is now deleted. Originally released in 1994. "Autechre's Rob Brown and Sean Booth have never exactly played safe. They began as electro-loving graffiti artists before progressing to the equally police-unfriendly world of pirate radio.
Amber
floats their '90s update of electro's cut-and-paste rhythms into the realm of the odd. It sounds like some kind of alien jazz record, and tracks like 'Foil' make even Aphex or µ-ziq's abstract tones seem almost conventional. That's not to say
Amber
is goal-less experimentation. There's plenty of melody on board, it's just that it creeps up on you from behind, as on 'Montreal.' The boys know how to give you a good fright too. 'Yulquen' and 'Teartear' are object lessons in ominous, otherworldly techno. Which about sums up where Autechre are at -- out on the fringes, having a good rummage through the weird and the beautiful." --Mike Barnes,

"It's been over a decade since the duo of Sean Booth and Rob Brown met one another and, over the course of five albums and numerous EPs under the Autechre name (say aw-TECH-er) and their alter-ego, Gescom (say GES-com), they have simply reshaped modern electronic music as we know it. There are so many landmark releases from them that there's literally not enough space on this page to do them all justice. Electro, techno, hip hop, ambient, modern classical, geometry, chaos theory... Autechre harness these constructs, push them beyond their breaking points and recombine them into glistening creations. it's easy to get lost in the perception of amorphous beauty in some of their pieces, but there's a meticulous precision to all their work that makes it all the more striking."

Catalog #:
WARP 180CD
"Avant-funk mischief makers Autechre return after a two year silence with their new salvo
Untilted
. A dense, polyrhythmic android dance of a record,
Untilted
is the sound of Autechre searching for the elusive ghosts in their drum machines. Beats rise from the ether only to be confronted by the static residue of otherworldy transmissions and the sounds of synthesizers being broken in a lonely, subterranean studioroom. The decomposed remains of hip-hop serve as the ultimate blueprint, but the corpse has degenerated into an almost unrecognizeable pile of flesh and bones, albeit one with it's heart faintly beating, pulse still strong. Posessed beatboxes lead the charge for an undead army of pop-locking zombies, hungry for flesh and a smooth spot for a wicked headspin. The sounds delight and menace, leaving one unsure whether or not something sinister lurks near, boastful in it's phantasmal b-boy stance."

Catalog #:
WARP 210CD
"There are few artists operating in contemporary music whose work could be accurately described as 'pioneering.' Though they'd doubtless balk at the term, Sheffield-via-Manchester's Sean Booth and Rob Brown probably have more claim on the label than most. For theirs is music that, on first listen at least, appears to be without influence, a rich hermetic sound world that is a law unto itself, adhering only to the constraints of its own internal logic. Their 10th studio album,
Oversteps
shows an oft-overlooked playfulness and a rarely mentioned musicality that comes to the forefront, in what could be described as their most accessible work to date. Between the layers of cold digital pings and fuzzed out tones, there are true chord changes and warm soundscapes being built from the ground up."

Quaristice
Label:
WARP RECORDS (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$15.50
Catalog #:
WARP 333CD
"Autechre, one of Warp's best known artists, return with
Quaristice
, a vast, sprawling masterpiece that will galvanize their dedicated and sizable fanbase. With Design Republic back at the helm of art direction,
Quaristice
will be an album that impresses sonically but also visually. This warmer analog masterpiece recalls some of Autechre's most classical material.
Quaristice
is an enveloping blanket of Autechre's skewed sound science."
