"In early 2008, Bardo Pond and Three Lobed Recordings teamed up to assemble Batholith, a collection of tracks that were close to the band's heart but for various reasons had never been released. The result was an extremely cohesive and vital statement that was positively received by both old and new Bardo Pond fans. During the compilation of Batholith, the band had to agonize over the wealth of material that they were sitting on in constructing the ultimate tracklisting -- there were too many good songs. The band approached this 'problem' by structuring two sister albums, Batholith and Peri, each possessing their own musical themes and each fully capable of standing independent from the other. For this reason, Peri is every bit as potent as its predecessor. The meticulous sequencing of Peri's five tracks provides a classic Bardo Pond experience. While the initial description of the material might lead one to think that these tracks are 'outtakes' or cutting-room floor type material, neither conclusion could be further from the truth. The band is quite excited to finally see all of the material on Peri venture into the public. For example, 'Chicken Gun' will be recognizable to the band's longtime fans. A former live staple from 1996 through 1998 (even making an appearance in the band's set at the first Terrastock festival), it is a propulsive and fiery rocker every bit as monumental as some of the band's classics such as 'lb.' and 'Tommy Gun Angel.' 'The Path' is a subtle number featuring floating flute work from Isobel Sollenberger. The album-closing 'Silver Pavilion' is the sort of meditative psychedelia that has been Bardo Pond's calling card over their lengthy career. The track dates to the band's extremely fertile, yet barely documented, period between the release of Dilate and On the Ellipse. ;Silver Pavilion's' slow, enveloping build properly see the listener to the door and is reminiscent of such flawless Bardo closing tracks as 'RM,' 'Aldrin' and 'Night Of Frogs.' Peri is pressed on 180g RTI vinyl and is housed within heavy 'old-style' one-pocket Stoughton gatefold jackets bearing new collage work from Michael Gibbons."

Originally released in 2003, this is Bardo Pond's sixth release. Formed in Philadelphia in 1989 by brothers John and Michael Gibbons, Bardo Pond is one of the most mesmerizing bands of the past few years. On The Ellipse sounds like a heavy mix of Sabbath riffs blended with the folk beauty of Led Zep III -- a broad-stroked swirl of heavy riffs, improvised jams and acoustic meditations. Philadelphia's Bardo Pond return in June 2006 with Ticket Crystals -- their sixth studio album and second for ATP Recordings. Completing a trilogy of work -- first embarked on with 2001's Dilate and centered with 2003's On the Ellipse -- Ticket Crystals resumes the quintet's signature doom tempo, multi-layered drones; while introducing a lighter pastoral, even Tudor-like feel, which rallies throughout against the band's youthful riff petulance. Recorded over two years at the band's home studio, a handful of the tracks first came to light on Bardo Pond's 2003 live UK dates alongside kindred spirits and former label mates, Mogwai. Tracking down the elusive balance between extensive improvisation and acutely structured arrangements, Ticket Crystals includes the spellbinding "Moonshine" (a ten-minute plus ethereal expedition that immediately recalls the acoustic intricacy of Led Zeppelin III coupled with the contemporary quirkiness of Cocorosie) and live favorite and album opener, "Destroying Angel," which only just manages to contain the sheer force of the brothers Gibbons' amplification and vocalist and flautist Isobel Sollenberger's haunting and occasionally terrifying tones. Also featured on the album is the band's unique reworking of The Beatles' White Album classic, "Cry Baby Cry," which was originally recorded for and broadcast by the BBC as part of their commemoration of the 25th anniversary of John Lennon's death.

It made total sense to me (as it will to you) when he later told me the name of the LP is just Bardo Pond. Why? It's a distillation. Two decades of playing together have sandblasted away everything unessential and left us with what we have here. It was like no one else before them had ever gotten near the plagal cadence, not Lou Reed or the Stooges or 2,000 yrs of church music. They invented it all over again, independent of any of that, after gawd knows how many years of nailing away and burning themselves up. I fucking love these songs. And while I hate writing almost as much as I hate third degree burns, I have to say it is a joy to be able to tell you about this record. I feel like Neil Fucking Armstrong. It took years for them to get here, but this record is the most goddamned beautiful thing they've ever done. Sorry for the superlatives. But really, the only thing left for them to do at this point is explode."
