Artist: BRAINTICKET
Title: Celestial Ocean
Label: LILITH (RUSSIAN FEDERATION)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $30.00
Catalog #: LR 307LP
"1973's brilliant Celestial Ocean, by the legendary Swiss Krautrock band Brainticket, is a concept album that details an ancient pharoah's journey into the afterlife (substitute the word 'journey' for 'trip' and you'll get what they were driving at). However, Brainticket were not mere products of their time, they explored some truly compelling musical territory and produced a superlative blanket of sound -- featuring a pioneering mix of early synthesizers, flute, zither, sitar, and male / female stream-of-consciousness spoken word vocals -- that ebbs and flows in the same general cosmos as classic Gong, going on to influence bands like Sonic Youth, Stereolab, Skinny Puppy, The Legendary Pink Dots, and more! This reissue is fully remastered from the original master tapes." Gatefold sleeve.

Title: Psychonaut
Label: LILITH (RUSSIAN FEDERATION)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $27.00
Catalog #: LR 312LP
"1972's Psychonaut, by the Swiss-based Brainticket, is early seventies space rock at its finest. While the band's debut album, 1971's Cottonwoodhill, was a heavily acid-laden affair dominated by droning organ, disturbing vocals and a collection of cacophonic sound effects (causing it to carry a warning label and be banned in several countries) for their second effort, band-founder Joël Vandroogenbroeck brought in a completely new line-up and changed the band's sound dramatically. While Psychonaut still takes listeners into the realm of altered consciousness -- making heavy use of a droning Hammond, sitar, tablas, etc.-- this time the vocals are more melodic and the music itself is more song-oriented. This is by far Brainticket's most accessible album, and perhaps their most timeless. Fully remastered from the original master tapes!"

Title: Cottonwoodhill
Label: LILITH (RUSSIAN FEDERATION)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $30.00
Catalog #: LR 313LP
"Being as LSD was first developed in a laboratory in Basel, it is perhaps no coincidence that one of the most 'far out' albums of all time was made by this Swiss band (no small feat, given the competition!). Brainticket's 1971 debut, Cottonwoodhill, begins normally enough with two fine psychedelic/Krautrock-influenced tracks, but the remainder of the album plays like an acid trip with a soundtrack, dominated by Joel Vandroogenbroeck's endless droning organ, a variety of musique concrète-type sound effects and vocalist Dawn Muir's trippy vocals. The album, banned in several countries, even came with this self-imposed warning: 'After Listening to this Record, your friends may not know you anymore.' / 'Only listen to this once a day, your brain might be destroyed!'." Gatefold sleeve.

Title: Cottonwoodhill
Label: PHONAG (SWITZERLAND)
Format: CD
Price: $28.00
Catalog #: P 81120
Repressed. Reissue of one of the essential early 70s psychedelic freak-out albums, first issued by the Hallelujah label in Switzerland in 1971. Licensed to German Bellaphone soon thereafter, this is generally considered one of the peak Krautrock experiences, despite its Swiss origins. Bellaphone did a poor quality CD issue in 1989, and there was also a bootleg version on "Bellgro" -- both of those are long o/p. This new CD, legitimately reissued by the original Swiss manufacturer, Phonag Records, offers improved sound & reproduces the fantastic swirl cover. At this point in time, Brainticket were made up of: Joel Vandroogenbroeck (organ, flute), Ron Bryer (guitar), Werni Frohlich (bass), Coismo Lampis (drums), Wolfgang Paap (tabla), Dawn Muir (voice) & Hellmuth Kolbe (potentiometers, generators and soundeffects). This is their first album (sometimes referred to as self-titled) and is quite different and more radical than anything else in their discography. It features an outlandish churning groove of a sound (vaguely comparable to Can or Funkadelic at their most tweaked), is deeply immersed in LSD mythology and is littered with electronic effects and collage-like elements leading towards the cover's warning: "Listen to the first recordings of this LSD/Hashish/Fixy/Jointy sound. Take a trip to your inner light. See the hallucinations of reality rise out of the groove. You've got your Brainticket now!"
