Title: Chapter One: A Long Way From Home
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: ERATP 006CD
This is the debut release by the UK's The British Expeditionary Force. Releasing four critically-acclaimed albums with Yourcodenameis:milo and a host of other production duties ranging from Enter Shikari to Bloc Party, producer/songwriter Justin Lockey returns with his new project, The British Expeditionary Force and their debut mini-album Chapter One: A Long Way From Home -- part one of a planned 3-part mini-album concept. Lockey's music is supplemented by the vocal talents of Aid Burrows. Using a process not dissimilar to Benjamin Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello's Postal Service, Lockey constructed the music in isolation in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and then sent it on to the Warrington-based Burrows, who supplied lyrics and vocals before sending the music back to Lockey for mixing and Erased Tapes founder Robert Raths for co-production. This meant that neither Justin nor Aid ever met together in the whole recording process. The result is an inspired collection of songs that are representative of the return of progressive, genre-defying music to the British Isles. The British Expeditionary Force sees Lockey and Burrows combine ethereal soundscapes, sonorous guitars, beautifully fragile vocal and vocoder work, Lockey's now-trademark sensitivity to drum sounds and Burrows' inclement lyrics together to form something akin to My Bloody Valentine filtered through the best of Brian Eno with a smattering of the sonic vistas of Sigur Rós. This is the sound of 21st-century northern England. Includes a remix by Rival Consoles.

Title: Chapter Two: Konstellation Neu
Label: ERASED TAPES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: ERATP 041CD
The British Expeditionary Force return with a shape-shifting prog-rock indietronica record. The B.E.F. was formed in 2007 by Aid Burrows, Justin Lockey and his brother James Lockey. While their trademark indie-electronica marriage Chapter One: A Long Way From Home (ERATP 006CD) was solely created via email, the long-awaited sequel Chapter Two: Konstellation Neu was recorded in one room, with two drummers and mad professors on synthesizers contributing to an even broader sonic palette. This is a sound that producer and ex-Yourcodenameis:milo mastermind Justin Lockey likes to describe as "prog-rock, innit." "The tactic we've used is the 'more' method. More sounds, more layers, more people. More face-to-face, more angles, more songs. If we've done our sums right, it should total more than the individual pieces," explains singer Aid Burrows.
