CENOT 012CD
"Cincinnati experimental/electronic/noise/whatever artist, C. Spencer Yeh, has been releasing cassettes, CD-Rs and other limited outbursts for the past decade. While best known for his violin deconstruction (such as his
Thin Wrist
LP), he also works with electronics, voice, and anything else within reach.
Mes Soldats Stupides
is a weird overview, selected from the plethora of recordings in the BxC vault, showing more sides of Spencer Yeh than anything he's released to date. Disc one is primarily structured around selections from his more recent out-of-print CD-R and cassette releases . With a cohesive album-like feel, this first disc contains some of Spencer's finest work ever, largely centered around vocals and electronics. Disc two stretches back a bit further into the archives, with some live performances, (many including a previous trio incarnation of BxC), and unreleased tracks in the mix. There's a strong basis in improvisation, often creating an electro-acoustic soup. Other pieces are very arranged, focused on developing a personal vocabulary using violin and voice --
'and anything else that can or can't make a sound'
as Yeh describes it."

Title:
Challenger
Label:
HOSPITAL PRODUCTIONS
Format:
CD
Price:
$14.00
Catalog #:
HOS 216CD
"Burning Star Core began in 1993 in Cincinnati, OH where it currently resides with primary member C. Spencer Yeh. It is considered a project and not a pseudonym. While the Burning Star Core project has included much wider ensembles,
Challenger
is a direct solo composition of C. Spencer Yeh. This recording is perhaps Yeh's most revealing, unguarded work.
Challenger
is a composed work, not an improvisation, with each piece revolving around a central melodic theme, featuring field recordings, which serve as an audio diary. The sounds range from pure tonal mood to huge electronic crescendos. But what's most remarkable is the use of space, where parts come in then drop out to build up the emotion. When the piano sound crashes in 'Mysteries of the Organ,' it reflects a frustration with paradise, a rejection of perfection, a jolt of inexplicable throes of life. In contrast is the quiet, haunting 'Hopelessly Devoted,' which sounds like a love letter written to outer space. These make for an album that is both dynamic yet consistent as a full statement."

Operator Dead... Post Abandoned
Label:
NO QUARTER
Format:
CD
Price:
$13.50
Catalog #:
NOQ 014CD
"Cincinnati native C. Spencer Yeh has been releasing records under the Burning Star Core moniker since 1993. A classically trained violinist, Yeh is the center of the amorphous free noise group whose past collaborators have included: Comets on Fire, Hototogisu, Chris Corsano and Thurston Moore.
Operator Dead...
finds BxC as an extremely loud four piece who waste no time and get right down to business creating massive, looping, head-splitting drones and titanic walls of sound. Calculated and controlled; the intensity builds and builds only to crash down into free-noise, psychedelic fury -- sounding something like the universe imploding in on itself, only captured inside a run-down Kentucky recording space."
