New Albion is a SF-based avant-classical/new music label with an impressive back catalog of amazing releases by significant contemporary composers, often merging the experimental/avant-garde/minimalist/improvisation/ etc. genres into something all new. One of the highest quality US independent label currently operating, they've had various distribution problems in recent years and have just lowered their list price to $15.98 (it used to be $18) in hopes of getting their stuff into more independently minded stores. We will be carrying most of their back catalog over time (there's about 90 CDs); for a start, here are some of our recent favorites. Carl Stone is an LA-based composer who has studied composition under Morton Subotnick and James Tenney and has been composing electro-acoustic music since 1972. His works generally incorporate detailed, seamless sampling wizardly, building electronic sound from natural and acoustic sound sources ? a sonic purist who relies on computer-based transformations to create a radical new way of listening to what was once familiar. This release from 1992 has to be considered one of the real jewels tucked away in the NA catalog ? a masterpiece of rhythmic invention & visionary, alien sound-waves. "There is nothing common-place about the sophisticated sampling practiced by Carl Stone... For Stone, who says he is fascinated by everything from Japanese Enka to Motown to Mozart, sampling provides a way to encompass all his musical interests. Sampling that which is carved in Stone is like voyaging microscopically deep inside sound. 'Sometimes,' Stone says, 'I'm simply attracted to a kind of wonderful moment in an otherwise dreary piece. So I'll say to myself, what would it be like to go in and really examine this closely and see how it works and see what can result from turning it inside out?" More recently, Stone has released CDs on the UK ambient label Em:t, as well as a collaborative CD with Otomo Yoshihide on Trigram and others.
