DU 001CD
"After almost four years of excellent, but rare, vinyl only releases, Canadian and German based electronic music label Dumb-Unit prepares to impress even more listeners with the debut of its mix CD, entitled
Public Works
. This compelling 65 minute mix features more than 20 songs all confidently, yet unobtrusively mixed from vinyl by international DJ and owner of Dumb-Unit, Jeremy P Caulfield. Appearances include: main Dumb-Unit artist Jake Fairley, Cologne based Falko Brocksieper & MIA of Sub-Static, Raumagent Alpha, Reynold of Paris, Repair, Adam Marshall and, of course, Jeremy Caulfield. Additionally 3 songs from the elusive uncut (Jake Fairley side project) 'Understanding the New Violence' 12 inch are present and featured in full form. From the rocking sound of 2004 to the minimal bleep and funk that Dumb-Unit first started with,
Public Works
is a smart and edgy summary to the sound of one of Canada's most successful minimal, techno and tech house labels."

"Over the last 2 years Jeremy has quietly infiltrated the ranks of the minimal and techno scenes by creating a rough, edgy and immediately recognizable sound. This modern, aggressive music with a keen sense of energy for the dance-floor has been featured on such labels as WMF and Trapez. Now he returns home to Dumb-Unit. Side a: deft baggage a haunting and driving track that begins as a dark and brittle mash up. Pitched up digital noise scratches away at the deft and tricky bass line. Then, in typical Canadian style the tracks opens up, and space becomes as important as sound. Quickly we enter into a deep and hypnotic foray into the new confident, Techno sound. Classic techno and minimal structures are adhered to, but the finished product is a polished modern track with Jeremy's tight drums and syncopated buzzes playing ping pong with the slow worbling pads. Side b: 'Slumberjack' already creating havoc on the circuit; 'Slumberjack' is just that: the monsters under the bed, the man behind the door. Pacing, patient and indifferent Slumberjack's apathy quickly transforms into a cold and calculated track. Each pad creeping up to the next, each drum and hi-hat snapping the other into place. Everything slowly creating the groove, no outrageous edits, no filtered vocals just a tight weave of dry clicking Techno, bass heavy tech-house and rocking sawwave minimal."

"Named after an old DJ mix first made and handed out on cassette back in the mid 90's,
Detached
[05] is a continuation of Jeremy's trademark sound and style; deep thumpy minimal with a dark heady edge. It's a sound continuously remodeled by the healthy roster included on this mix, a diverse gathering of both renown and upcoming minimal artists. A compelling and colourful mix with pieces molding, weaving and cutting through themselves
Detached 2
chugs along, while Jeremy's disciplined programming keep the mix fluid and tight. From the rolling slink and grind of the Wighnomy Brother's opening epic 'Pele Bloss' to the dark pushy beats of Metope's 'Second Skin, metallic, cut up drums do battle with tumbling bubbly basslines. Seamlessley, Jeremy blends deep and emotional songs into straight up jacking grooves. The likes of John Tejada's rubbery house, Frank Martique's industrial minimal, or Jeff Samuel's classic Swing, blend deep into pieces such as M.I.A.'s cinematic 'Sweet November.' A pushing yet satisfying DJ mix and one with countless more highlights to mention. A worthy endevour that effortlessly keeps the mind and behind in motion."

"Appearing on Dumb-Unit to transform the super tight 'Grotbox' from DU 018 into a sprawling, dark summer masterpiece are Glasgow's Alex Smoke and Germany's Frank Martiniq. Starting from his favourite position, down in the dirt, where the smallest pieces of tracks grow, Mr. Smoke builds a sinister story out of the bit and cuts of Jeremy's original. Slowly mangling the pieces until his trademark bass and and reverb washes drown out any relation to the original until all of a sudden it returns to deliver the final blow. Next in line is the precision king, the German from Neumuenster; Frank Martiniq. Like Smoke, Frank digs deep to find the right pieces to build his theory. Slightly tribal, slightly low fi but still swinging hypnotic tech-house, Frank's mix is an excursion into layered drums and washes of digital noise."

"Following up his successful
Cavalcade
EP Jeremy P Caulfield returns with more dirty, dry, minimal! Yes ..the international style ... dirty and imperfect minimal, with a devilish grin, its nastiness is what makes you want more. A release of warm analogue randomness crunched and twisted through digital realms, creating an EP that is full of texture, tension and character. Once again Jeremy delivers an uncompromising EP of future-forward funk. One part techno, one part minimal, this is a powerful hybrid of an EP that will resonate deep into the night. 'Flipperkicker' is a tough minimal workout, square waves do battle with distorted lead lines and cut up drums all fighting for attention and a place in your heart. Tight percussive bleeps echo as they grow more full and complex until their randomness creates a tight moving pattern with a growling underbelly . This is a stiff track with a good aftertaste. Enjoy responsibly. 'Wreckroom': is a more sedate yet no less endearing song, befitting to the B-side, it is the softer smarter brother of it's mean and dirty older sibling. More epic and directional than 'Flipperkicker' it carries us through noise washes and crunched sounds into a deep yet hidden chorus. A chorus that bounces and bleeps its way around until it empties itself into a smooth flowing breakdown. A brawny number with a sensitive soul and nice knickers..."

"Here comes the Dumb-Unit boss and if you think he's playing it obvious -- hell no! Music stripped to the core to fit that one perfect occasion in the set. Jeremy gets rid of anything unnecessary and grabs the essence of certain moments to cut them into vinyl. The A-side comes along with a warm attitude, slightly uncharacteristic for JPC but it seduces you mildly like a tanned vixen on the beach. Put that hammock up and you should both jump in. What were we saying about beach music awhile ago? Well, forget it. Already caned at Bar 25 and other outdoor spots to warm blown kisses from the ladies. If you think that little is happening...listen again...tight shifting sounds, off kilter toms swirl through space and invite you to join the trip. But beware. The seas get rough after nightfall. The B-side shows the true force behind this storm's eye: darkness. Typical for the Dumb-Unit captain this track finds its foundation in a deep and dark environment, rough seas and crashing whitewater. Soon it begins to twist you deeper than a whirlpool and the undercurrent pulls down further into layers of bright reverbs and washes."

Toronto-to-Berlin export
Jeremy P Caulfield
, the respected and prolific tech/house DJ, returns with
Detached Works
, representing the next installment in the long-standing
Detached
mix series. Caulfield, along with a close faction of other DJs, was responsible for building Toronto's rich techno scene through the late '90s. Transplanting himself to Berlin in late 2003, he teamed up with a new label partner
Ingo Gansera
, and a new synergy emerged. Since then, the two have quietly woven the Dumb-Unit label deep into the city's rich electronic music scene, to serve as an outlet for a newly emerging attitude. Since the start of his DJ career, Jeremy has developed a dedicated following by always keeping his style fresh yet firmly locked into his trademark dark, brooding hypnotism. The same goes with the label, although many of the artists are spread onto other imprints, for Dumb-Unit they have often sculpted a darker more stalking brand of techno. Hence the name, not clinging to one scene or sound. Here now is a first attempt to capture the many different levels and moods of Dumb-Unit, as well as Jeremy's DJing together in one CD package. CD1 is a straightforward concept: collect some of the best Dumb-Unit tracks of the last 2 years and put them together on CD for all to take pleasure in. CD2 is a larger undertaking but with no different goal: through his tight network of international friends, Jeremy has compiled an arresting mix of the highest caliber. Mixed on two turntables but using Serato Scratch technology, Jeremy has scoured his acquaintances' hard drives and MP3 promo pools and begged them to let him use what he found. The result is a mix that is as fresh as he could get, without bootlegging it. Filled to the brim with notable up-and-comers as well as a bevy of household names,

DU 035EP
The fruits of a more laid back studio approach can be heard on the stellar
Jeremy P. Caulfield
EP,
Lacewing Puff
. Using the studio to refine ideas he hears and plays on the road, Jeremy approached the A-side with the firm aim to keep it throbbing, deep and to the point. The result is a sublime, hypnotic and dark micro anthem. "Licorice Pipe" is the darker twin of the two. Dirty, wet and full of funk, this track sweats and pants harder than a 200-pound Marmaduke. Not so focused on a big dancefloor, Jeremy still constructs a complex rhythmic track that brave and mighty DJs will surely play to the disheveled morning masses.
