"For fans of over-orchestrated Anglophilic pop-psych, it doesn't get much better than this. Hailing from Chico, California -- and not to be confused with the inferior group of the same name on Dot Records -- Colours sprang from the loins of '60s punk legends the Boy Blues in 1967 and crafted an album's worth of quirky, baroque-infused material, laden with luscious harmonies, tantalizing textures and an intriguing lyrical bent. The band journeyed to LA in 1968 and recorded for Johnny Rivers' Soul City label, produced by Armin Steiner with arrangements by Marty Paich. Comparisons to the Bee Gees'
Odessa
, Love's
Forever Changes
or the Beach Boys'
Smile
only partly describe the rich sonic tapestry Colours wove. But cruelly, the album was never released, and the band broke up shortly afterward. Now with
Voluptuous Doom
, we can revel in the full glory of Colours. Boasting superb sound, bonus live tracks recorded at SF's famed Matrix, and lengthy liner notes by expert Alec Palao, it's a stupendous package. But wait -- in customary Frantic Records style, you also get a full second disc of 1970 material by successor band Christian, stripped down but equally tuneful. Prepare to gorge on the sonic feast that is
Voluptuous Doom
and Colours." Includes 12-page booklet.

"Colours launched onto the scene in 1968 with a stunningly glorious psychedelic masterpiece of L.A studio wizardry. A super group before the name was coined, Colours was the brainchild of Gary Montgomery & Jack Dalton, two hard-working, former Motown songwriters who also penned songs for The Turtles, Nino & April and The Moon. This magical mystery tour-de-force of psychedelic Beatlesque pop also features the talents of Derek & The Dominos bassist Carl Radle. This first-ever CD issue of their long-out-of-print albums (
Colours
and
Atmosphere
) is supplemented by long-lost 67 Dalton & Montgomery recordings cut just months before they formed Colours. 1969's
Atmosphere
features former Beach Boy David Marks around the same time he was a member of The Moon another band with many connections to Colours. The 16-page color booklet also includes rare, unpublished photos and comprehensive liner notes that feature the participation of original band members."

"The liner-notes from this, tha band's first album tell us that they 'have the crystalline sharpness of the Beatles before they turned acid', and what's more, it's quite true; an excellent pop-psych album, first released on DOT in 1968; the first track, 'Bad Day At Black Rock, Baby', must be reckoned among the very best attempts at an orchestrated psych sound, with the band easily switching from key to key and featuring many disturbing time-changes; it's charms are many and varied, with songs like the sitar drone 'Rather Be Me', and the commune-song 'Brother Lou's Love Colony', later covered by Moon, and the eerie 'Cataleptic'. An underestimated LP, until now, but not anymore."
