Artist: COLTRANE, JOHN
Title: Coltrane Jazz
Label: ATLANTIC
Format: LP
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: SD 1354HLP
"The first album to hit the shelves after Giant Steps, Coltrane Jazz was largely recorded in late 1959, although one of the eight songs ('Village Blues') was done in late 1960. On everything save the aforementioned 'Village Blues,' Coltrane used the Miles Davis rhythm section of pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb." --All Music Guide. Exact repro reissue, on 180 gram vinyl.

Title: Coltrane Jazz
Label: ATLANTIC
Format: LP
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: SD 1354LP
Exact repro reissue, manufactured by Rhino. Originally released in 1961. Featuring John Coltrane (tenor saxophone/soprano saxophone), Wynton Kelly (piano), McCoy Tyner (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), Steve Davis (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums) and Elvin Jones (drums). "Coltrane Jazz... was recorded immediately after Giant Steps, with the exception of one track ('Village Blues,' recorded later), and in many ways represents a continuation of the ideas and concepts presented in the preceding record. The five Coltrane originals on this album could almost -- note the almost -- be called 'more of the same,' inasmuch as two of the tunes make good use of the pedal-tone and/or the ostinato bass (actually three, because 'Harmonique' has a B-flat running through the bass line almost constantly) and one has the characteristic Giant Steps changes in the bridge. But somehow, the treatment is different. There's something else in there. Even the three standards ['Little Old Lady,' My Shining Hour' and 'I'll Wait And Pray'] sound different."

Title: Olé Coltrane
Label: ATLANTIC
Format: LP
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: SD 1373HLP
180 gram exact repro reissue, manufactured by Rhino. "Olé, which was originally released in 1962, was recorded in between the two sessions that formed the Impulse! release Africa/Brass. It appears that with Olé, Coltrane was continuing the experimentation of his earlier Atlantic recordings. In this case Coltrane was trying to explore the larger group format. Olé features Eric Dolphy, Freddie Hubbard, Art Davis, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman and Elvin Jones, and of course Coltrane himself -- a septet...quite a large band/ensemble." -- All About Jazz

Artist: COLTRANE, JOHN
Title: Coltrane's Sound
Label: ATLANTIC
Format: LP
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: SD 1419LP
Exact repro reissue, originally released in 1966. Featuring McCoy Tyner (piano), Steve Davis (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums), captured here are the most extraordinary moments of Coltrane's Atlantic period, recorded in 1960 but not released until 1966. "What John Coltrane has 'gotten in' on this album, into the music that is, strikes me as an accurate cross-section of his musical capabilities. He is heard on a lovely ballad, 'The Night Has A Thousand Eyes' as though to refute those who claim he will not play ballads (his hard-edged approach to the ballad is intriguing); he is heard in numerous examples of the jet speed runs and explosions of notes contrasted to and intertwined with the similar eruptions from Elvin Jones' drums ('sometimes he's too much for me!' John has said of Elvin); he is heard in reflective moments, in intense moments and in lyric moments. In fact, almost all the facets of Coltrane are displayed here, including his ventures into the language of the soprano saxophone." -- Ralph J. Gleason

Title: Coltrane Plays The Blues
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 209LP
"Recorded on 24 October 1960 in NYC, Coltrane Plays The Blues is perhaps a misleading title for this album as Coltrane is not so much playing the blues as bringing the feeling of blues into the idiom of jazz. This memorable album, featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums and Steve Davis on bass, hails from Coltrane's first period as leader of his own quartet, and finds Coltrane playing then highly unusual soprano sax on two numbers -- 'Blues To Bechet', a pianoless tribute to the great Sydney Bechet, and 'Mr. Syms', where McCoy Tyner is given the opportunity to really show his stuff, which he does masterfully. Includes 'Exotica' (also recorded during this session) as a bonus track + 4 more bonus alternate tracks on the CD." 180 gram vinyl.

Title: My Favorite Things
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP+CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: DOK 211LP
"Anyone looking for proof that John Coltrane's exalted status is so deserved need only to glance at the amount of time this album took to record. In just three days (Oct 24 - 26, 1960), Coltrane managed to almost effortlessly produce this milestone of modern jazz, and the impeccable Jones/Tyner/Davis line up that supports Coltrane solos ('But Not For Me') give the entire session the feeling that we are experiencing pure genius." On 180 gram vinyl.

Title: Art Blakey's Big Band And Quintet
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 805LP
"Recorded in NYC in 1957 and originally released on the small Bethlehem Records, this LP contains 2 amazing sessions: Session B (tracks A1, A2, B1, B2, B3, B4 and B5, 'Oasis,' previously unreleased on LP) features a 15-piece big band led by Art Blakey who was in transition with his Jazz Messengers at the time. The band he has put together for this session explores some wilder numbers, like Melba Liston's 'Late Date,' which would not have been out of place with the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra (the horn players are all Gillespie graduates), along with some more conservative material, such as Jerry Valentine's 'Midriff' (which is a nod to Count Basie's post-war orchestra), giving us an interesting look at how Coltrane handles himself playing in this unusual environment. Session C (A3, A4) is also a rare glimpse at a young John Coltrane, this time playing his own music in a quintet format (led by Art Blakey and also featuring Donald Byrd, Walter Bishop, Jr., and Wendell Marshall). Coltrane's highly-praised 'Pristine' would not have been out of place on his landmark Blue Train album."

Title: A Day In The Life Of John Coltrane
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: 2LP
Price: $32.00
Catalog #: DOX 822LP
"Recorded July 11, 1958 at Rudy Van Gelder's Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, this album is aptly named A Day In The Life Of John Coltrane because the entire contents of this double album w recorded in a single day. Originally available only on three separate LPs, this quintet session (featuring a hard-hitting Chambers-Cobb-Garland rhythm section) captures Coltrane at the top of his game, although he plays no original material. Coming to prominence in the mid-fifties as Miles Davis' sideman, Coltrane's own star quickly ascended (recorded just 9 months after his genre-busting Blue Train for Blue Note) and for a brief time burned brightly, hard to believe just 9 years later he'd be dead."

Title: Wells Fargo
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 824LP
"These recordings from March 13, 1958 see a 32-year-old John Coltrane playing an obscure date with little known jazz trumpeter / flugelhorn player, Wilbur Harden. These recordings made at the legendary Van Gelder studios also include Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Louis Hayes on drums (while the 2 bonus tracks feature Curtis Fuller on trombone, Ali Jackson on bass, Howard Williams on piano, and Arthur Taylor on drums). The immensely talented, but equally obscure Harden appeared on several Yusef Lateef and Curtis Fuller records for Savoy as well as leading his own sessions in the late fifties, only to drop out of the jazz scene entirely by 1960 due to health problems (and finally pass away in 1969). In fact, Harden was a great composer and a pioneer on the flugelhorn and all the tracks on this album are Harden compositions. Coltrane, as history has shown, fared much better, and during this period was just on the cusp of super-stardom. He was busy playing around NYC with Thelonious Monk, and had recently rejoined the Miles Davis sextet, and it would not be long before Coltrane would begin leading his own sessions, soon becoming a household name in jazz. 2 bonus tracks previously not included in the original album."

Title: Africa
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 825LP
"Recorded on June 24 1958 at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ, these sessions (except for the bonus, 'Once In A While' ) feature original compositions by Wilbur Harden (best known for his work with Yusef Lateef and John Coltrane) and hard-bop trombonist Curtis Fuller (best known for his work with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and appearance on the classic Blue Trane album). The 32-year-old John Coltrane had only just recorded Blue Train a year earlier and it is interesting to hear his style beginning to stretch out, as he makes his musical transition from strict hard bop to the groundbreaking style that would become legendary the following year on Giant Steps, making Coltrane one of the biggest names in jazz."

Title: Trane Of August '57
Label: DOXY (ITALY)
Format: LP
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: DOX 826LP
"Recorded in 1957, a young Coltrane joins Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Arthur Taylor for an inspired showcasing of three Trane originals amid a ballad by Alonzo Levister and a revved up version of Irving Berlin's 'Soft Lights And Sweet Music.' Although Coltrane had only started recording a few years earlier, his style had already come into its own and, particularly on his originals like the bonus track 'Slowtrane,' it is interesting to hear how Coltrane manages to break into and impose himself on one of the tightest rhythm sections in jazz, giving listeners a fleeting glimpse of what Trane had in store for the future."

Title: The Inch Worm
Label: GET BACK (ITALY)
Format: CD
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: GET 2033CD
"Recorded live for a radio broadcast on November 28, 1962 in Stefaniensaal, Graz Austria while Coltrane and his quartet were on tour in Europe. This is Coltrane and his 'classic quartet,' one of the most famous jazz quartets of all time, featuring jazz all-stars McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums). This is the same line-up that would go on to record the seminal A Love Supreme, just two years later. Coltrane can be heard here expanding his improvisations and reworking Trane standards like 'Impressions' and 'The Inch Worm,' a modal piece in the style of 'My Favorite Things,' as well as his very personal interpretation of Cole Porter's classic ballad 'Everytime We Say Goodbye.'"

Title: Sun Ship
Label: IMPULSE!
Format: LP
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: IMP 167HLP
Gatefold reissue on 180 gram vinyl. Recorded in August, 1965, and released in 1971. "...the final studio album by John Coltrane's classic quartet (with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones) before Pharoah Sanders joined the band on second tenor. At this point in time, Coltrane was using very short repetitive themes as jumping-off points for explosive improvisations, often centered around one chord and a very specific spiritual mood.... Even in the most intense sections (and much of this music is atonal), there is a logic and thoughtfulness about Coltrane's playing." -- All Music Guide

Label: IMPULSE!
Format: LP
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: IMP 215HLP
Gatefold 180 gram vinyl reissue, originally released in 1962. Featuring John Coltrane (tenor saxophone/soprano saxophone), McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison, (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums). "A recording many consider his finest single album, and rightly so, John Coltrane displays all of the exciting elements that sparked brilliance and allowed his fully formed instrumental voice to shine through in the most illuminating manner. On tenor saxophone he's simply masterful, offering the burgeoning sheets of sound philosophy only he perfected into endless weavings of melodic and tuneful displays of inventive, thoughtful, driven phrases. Coltrane plays a bit of soprano saxophone as a primer for his more exploratory work to follow." -- All Music Guide

Title: Olé/Tunji/The Sun
Label: SLOW TO SPEAK
Format: 12"
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: IMP 506EP
"Reverence around the personality of John Coltrane exceeds religious zealotry -- to sing his praise is almost superfluous in this age of jazz immortalization, the pinnacle years of its experimental zeal & development heralded in many ways as the highest point in Western musical/historical development, the ultimate triumph of the American aural avant-garde and the insurmountable achievement of black music as a whole. A quick gauge of his creative trajectory reveals that the geometric creative growth of Coltrane and his musical base -- comprised of dozens of musicians & composers handpicked by Coltrane to encircle him creatively -- was far from settling down when cut down by the man's untimely death in 1967 at the early age of 40. One of the indisputable leaders of the jazz vanguard, Coltrane, ever the talent scout & tastemaker as much the leading tenor saxophonist of his time, had assembled the proper personnel & conceptual vision that would carry the avant-garde into the 1970s with his growing ethereality, abstraction and ever-playful experimental mastery: an already well-established feet at the dawn of the 1960s. While much stress has been laid on his most abrasive 'free-jazz' leanings, Coltrane had, by no means, abandoned the dynamic relationship with melody that the standard-forebears had drilled into him from his early years, and he was one of the first to see the possibility of combining dissonant investigation with the warm directness and immediacy of intricate melodic composition. Along with Davis' Bitch's Brew, albums spanning from Olé Coltrane to Cosmic Music rolled out the red carpet that both protégé's -- Sanders, Cherry & his second wife Alice -- & strange newcomers alike would triumphantly parade across for the next 10 years, defining what would be later coined 'spiritual jazz' and solidifying his mythos as one of the select few of 1950-1960s jazz greats. And while historical might is always noted with special admiration in the critical review of our 20th century music, it is the immediate emotional and expressive vivacity of his music that shines through, eternally and especially today, that makes songs like 'Olé,' 'Tunji' (debuted in 1997) & 'The Sun' literally timeless, building blocks not just to their own self-causal legacies but to one of the few justifiable suppositions of musical prodigy that, as time has demonstrated, remains quietly and incontrovertibly vindicated."
