Title:
The Mantra
Label:
CITYFOX (SWITZERLAND)
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
CITYFOX 001EP
"The new Swiss label Cityfox starts with the two sides of Detroit's Lee Curtiss. On side A, Lee shows his darker techno side with a phat smooth baseline and some wise poetry on 'The Mantra' as well as 'Vibrant Member,' where he gives some advice how to handle a girl. On side B you can hear his housy heart and you realize, that this guy isn't as tough as you thought. 'Reverse Caress' is a tooly horn bomb. 'Whatcha Need' comes in with an euphoric baseline and is as simple as it's raw and massive."

Price:

DU 038EP
Lee Curtiss
has been forging his uniquely backwoods, yet avant-garde and primal brand of deep and twisted dance music since the late 1990s. Growing up between the two poles of Chicago and Detroit organized Lee's approach to production squarely between the grooving, deep house sounds of artists like
Derrick Carter
,
Ricardo Villalobos
,
Zip
(aka
Dimbiman
),
Matthew Dear
and
Richie Hawtin
. Lee's "fuck trends, fuck dance music, and fuck me" approach to producing and performing only the strongest of stomachs and most iron-clad of minds can withstand.

Smut

Price:

DU 043EP
Lee Curtiss
, the man/beast from Detroit, is back. And what a mess he has made this time. The warm weather and the lure of lewd women in gold bikinis and white moustaches proved too much for this landlocked Michigan boy, and he gave in to temptation. Polished and pumping, a crooning ode to the heat of summer,
Smut
is a dirty treat for some hot, sticky nights. So pack it up and take it on the trip.

The Black Door EP
Label:
SPECTRAL SOUND
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
SPC 079EP
Detroit's
Lee Curtiss
presents
The Black Door
EP. "Black Door Beauty" starts with a touch of Chicago futurism, spinning congas, staccato vocal samples, and a swift dusting of hi-hats into a house anthem with psychedelic undertones.
Dyed Soundorom
's remix minimizes the sub-bass thump and plays up the track's oddball trappings with creaking hinges, neurotic synthesizers, and a chorus of tittering laughter. "Smoking Mirrors" features clouds of melting organ tones and busy polyrhythms as a sturdy bass-line cuts through the haze.

Title:
Watergate 08
Label:
WATERGATE RECORDS (GERMANY)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
WG 008CD
This is the eighth edition of the
Watergate
series, compiled and mixed by
Lee Curtiss
. Only 9 years after its official opening, Watergate has become one of the world's most prominent underground electronic music institutions, in no small part due to its picturesque location running directly alongside the river Spree, its wall-to-wall LED dancefloor installation and most of all, its consistent flow of first-rate international talent performing every week. Watergate's presence and influence has spawned many side projects including a boutique-style mix -- a who's-who of the club's regular talent and resident artists such as
Sascha Funke
,
Sebo K
,
dOP
,
Ellen Allien
and others have all contributed to the aesthetically pleasing series, now regarded as collector's items. The eighth installment bridges the gap between two global capitals of techno: Berlin, and Detroit, home of Lee Curtiss, who delivers a forward-thinking mix, inspired by time spent living in both cities. Lee is one of a new generation of techno visionaries from the Motor City. Based between Detroit and Berlin, Lee has a fundamental grasp of what makes both dancefloors at Watergate tick, and this enduring love and understanding of the space clearly shines through in his mix. Building on the raw soul and funk of those who have blazed a trail before him, on both sides of the Atlantic, Lee brings his own subtle melodies and keen sense of dramatic tension to the fore in a mix that encompasses all that is vibrant and exciting about underground techno in 2011. Artists include:
Jazzler aka Dixie Yure
,
No Regular Play
,
Maceo Plex
,
Footprintz
,
Guy Gerber
,
Maayan Nidam
, dOP,
Le Loup

Title:
Sexy Dancer
Label:
WOLF AND LAMB
Format:
12"
Price:
$13.00
Catalog #:
WLM 001EP
"Hot on the heels of his
Smut
release for Dumb Unit in the early summer, Lee's uniquely avant-backwoods brand of dance music has been collecting accolades steadily over the last year or so. Opener 'Sexy Dancer' is as deep and provocative as its title suggests. Fueled by punching kick and smeared with slick synth melodies, a grimey bass passage submerges the mix into sweaty and sticky territories. An intermittent Yello-esque vocal shames us as we descend unreservedly to the early hours. On the flip, 'Heavy Petting' opens with a tired and resonant vocal passage. Reverberated percussion shuffles amidst howling synth pulses and a stuttering bass line. Backing you into a corner with only one thing on its mind, this is an uneasy but wholly cathartic deep electro experience. B2 'And Counting' features haunting French children and stabbed house keys, encircled by reverberant live re percussion. A moment of warm, melodic calm relieves before diving to the depths in one last push to close. Absolutely filthy."
