Title: Balance 020
Label: EQ RECORDINGS/BALANCE MUSIC (AUSTRALIA)
Format: 2CD
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: BAL 004CD
Swiss melodic techno bastion Deetron has chosen to embrace both the past and present of mixing disciplines on Balance 20. CD1 was mixed digitally, with additional production and editing in Cubase and Wavelab, and CD2 was recorded with three turntables and an Allen & Heath mixer -- and some very special dubplates. Deetron's mix takes in seminal classics, exclusives, rare cuts, lesser-known gems, and a healthy blend of big names and underground heroes. CD1 sees the blissful tones of "Nine" from Autechre and a tease of Model 500's twinkling "Infoworld." Detroit-style beauty comes from Unabombers' take on Shit Robot's "Losing My Patience," arpeggiated proto-trance lushness from Todd Terje's "Bonysh" and hypnotic magic from DJ Koze's "The Geklöppel Continues." Move D is drafted in for some jazzy piano action on "Your Personal Healer," leading into Carl Craig's re-rub of System 7. There's a collaboration between Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Four Tet and Burial, and a little funk colors the mix via Maceo Plex. Caribou's remix of Virgo Four's "It's A Crime" ups the ante, Mr. Beatnick's "Synthetes" takes us in a different direction, and Cavalier's "Kaimanawa" brings deep house flavor to the table. Ratcliffe's take on Throbbing Gristle's "Hot On The Heels Of Love" lays its emotion-drenched chords under loops of Nicolas Jaar's detached voice, before LV, Message To Bears and Zaki Ibrahim's "Explode." A dubbed-out closing section gives way to an eccentric finale, in the form of Savage Progress' bugged-out and vampy "Heart Begin To Beat." CD2 is focused on straight-up house and techno grooves, keeping the momentum and energy high. Ripperton's "Swept Illusions" leads up to Âme's stunning reworking of Osunlade's "Envision" and the effervescent charm of Deetron's "Croque." Super Flu, Sneaker and Wbeeza enter in old skool jack mode while Reggie Dokes' piano beauty "Haiti" flies effortlessly over the top of a mysterious, snappy old skool tech house white label (Shed) -- and then Romanthony joins the party. Simon Garcia's "Tears In Vain" takes the mix to a higher plane, sublime Dutch techno leads into another Four Tet gem, and Deetron's edit of Radio Slave's "Let It Rain" ups the tension. Lone leads into actual retro techno from Derrick May, then an epic slice of Carl Craig magic -- and what better way to finish than with an exclusive dubplate from our faithful curator? Other artists include: Reno Wurzbacher, Julischkaa, Julio Bashmore, BNJM, Wishmountain, System 7, Resonance, Lawrence, Dave Aju, Avus, Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto, Andy Stott, I:Cube, Roots Panorama, Mampo Village, Mathew Jonson, Mike Dehnert, Redshape, Johanna Knutsson, Minilogue, Surgeon, Cosmin TRG, Rhythm Is Rhythm, Ronny & Renzo and C2 Cinema.

Title: Collide
Label: GREEN (NETHERLANDS)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: GR 011EP
This is Deetron's debut release for Green. Whether it's creating the deepest and most soulful of house, or the grandest of emotional techno, Deetron's ability to craft exquisite, timeless pieces is second-to-none. On "Collide," Deetron's Detroit spirit is evident through the power held in its euphoric synth arpeggio, which builds constantly to its climax. "Dark Matter" is a bass-heavy, almost steppin' affair, with a darker atmosphere that is brightened temporarily by the lush pads in the break.

Title: Twisted
Label: MUSIC MAN (BELGIUM)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: MM 027CD
Swiss-born Deetron aka Sam Geiser unveils his debut full-length album Twisted on Belgium's esteemed Music Man imprint. As proven by his constantly expanding catalog of productions, Deetron is capable of creating tracks that sit happily within the context of a DJ set, while avoiding landing in the often throwaway category of "DJ tools." As with many of the more dynamic turntablist-styled techno and house DJs, Deetron took his early cues from hip-hop, before being won-over by the early sounds of Chicago and Detroit. His DJing -- then still in its infancy -- followed this influence, steering his career in a more 4/4 direction. Early work for labels such as Phont and Intec through the late '90s and 2000, saw Deetron finding his audience (including a string of International club jocks) and developing his own sound. Born in Bern, Switzerland, Sam's father's activities as a jazz musician ensured that he was surrounded by music from a very early age, sewing the seeds of his own musical interests. But it was hip-hop that inspired him the most: Sam soaked up the music of Gangstarr, A Tribe Called Quest and Prince Paul like a sponge and was quick to realize the role of the turntable within this context, taking up DJing in 1992. Early hip-house producers, such as Todd Terry, also captured his attention and Sam began to make the transition to more 4/4 orientated sounds -- picking up on the now-classic output of Chicago and Detroit-based electronic musicians and introducing this into the sets he was, by now, playing around his home town, and in Switzerland. His first single as Soulmate was released on the Phont label in 1997 before releasing a string of 12"s on Music Man as well as a superb mix CD that acts as ample testament to Sam's skills behind the turntables. Combining Sam's love of house, classic techno, electro, Latin and jazz influences, Twisted is a beautiful journey through an electronic landscape littered with orchestral sweeps, delicate pads, sublime Robert Owens-esque vocals, dancefloor beats and heart tugging strings. Featuring guest appearances from Subject Detroit's DJ Bone, L.A.-based singer Ovasoul7, vocalist and guitarist Justin Chapman, who is also one-half of the Atlanta-based DJ/production duo KemeticJust, and the one and only Paris The Black Fu from the Detroit Grand Pubahs. Twisted is a dancefloor journey from beginning to end. From the opening bass rumble of "Twisted Memories" to the old-school Chicago vox stylings of "Life Soundtrack" and the Drexciyan wiggle of "Isotope" to the demented refrains of "The Afterlife," Deetron shows us that techno can still conjure moments of beauty while still keeping us on the dancefloor.

Title: Fuse Presents Deetron
Label: MUSIC MAN (BELGIUM)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: MM 033CD
Joining the ranks of Dave Clarke, DJ Hell, Joris Voorn, Steve Bug, Shinedoe, Adam Beyer and Technasia, who have all been firm favorites at Belgium's illustrious techno mecca, Fuse, Deetron (aka Sam Geiser) now provides us all with a new live mix to add some Swiss spice to the series, including some unreleased and exclusive tracks. Splicing the likes of Fingers Inc., Marcel Dettman, Shackleton, Redshape, Henrik Schwarz, Âme, Kenneth Bager and Radio Slave, Deetron takes us on a journey as old and new, house and techno all collide in one glorious party. His first single -- as Soulmate -- was released on Phont in 1997, but possibly the most fruitful partnership of his career so far is with Belgium's Music Man label. Beginning with the Dolls For A Diva 12" in 2001, and including several more 12"s and a full-length album, Deetron now flexes his DJ muscles for the esteemed Fuse series. Fuse remains Belgium's premier techno club, and has been so since its opening in 1994. It started off as a haven for high quality techno with a reputation for bringing in the best and most innovative DJs on the scene. Alongside residents Pierre and Deg, DJs such as Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Dave Clarke, Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos and lots of others seem to enjoy playing here as much as the crowd enjoys partying to their sets. Deetron joins the illustrious ranks and takes us from the deeper-edged sides of techno and the driving rhythms of house to a place where Carl Craig does battle with Spacetime Continuum, Efdemin takes on Jacopo Carreras, Henrik Schwarz joins forces with Âme and Dixon, Matthew Styles rubs shoulders with DXR and Radio Slave segues into the 1990 "lost" classic "Future" by Mr. Monday. The Fuse party machine is once again in safe hands. Other artists include: Mossa, Swayzak, Salvatore Freda & Volta, Jean Luc Ponty & Nikolaj Grandjean, Jackie Idjut, Iron Curtis, Dop, Baaz, Gene Hunt, Abicah Soul, Jerome Derradji, Adam Marshall, Todd Sines, Trus'me, Dettmann & Klock, Vengeance Tenfold, Michel Cleis & Salvatore Freda, The Lost Men and Herb Martin.
