In just over 18 months, Black Box has gone from being a totally new imprint to one of the most recognizable and reliable brands in dubstep. Following the recent success of the Kryptic Minds album Can't Sleep on Black Box, and with increased interest in the label, it seemed an appropriate time to ask DJ Madd to compile a studio mix of new, old and unreleased tracks from the label, and to package this mix as a low-cost product to appeal to casual shoppers and would-be listeners. Madd's mix takes in many past highlights of the label as well as fresh material and dubplates, giving a fantastic overview of the depth and quality of the label's music direction. "N Type's label comes correct each and every time. Budapest-born but now Bristol-based producer DJ Madd has carved himself a pretty unique trench within his contemporaries over the space of a handful of singles -- mainly released on the Boka and Black Box imprints. Going in just as hard as producers like Benga and Caspa, Madd -- known to his parents as Peter Simon -- manages to retain a lot of space and atmosphere in his productions, fleshing his tracks out with heavy sine wave pulses rather than those mid range frequencies that seem to get included expressly to make you lose your shit on the dancefloor. Flirting with the funk in a similar way to someone like Joker, Madd has a great command of aerated bass lines, tweaking the best force out of his low end and complimenting that speaker pressure with vibrancy and these little flickers of synth colour that lodge themselves deep in your brain for days."
