Title: Bear Traces: Nuggets From Bob's Barn (Second Paw)
Label: SUB ROSA (BELGIUM)
Format: LP
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SR 325.2LP
Sub Rosa presents part two in a two-part vinyl version of the Bear Traces compilation culled from the legendary collection of Bob Hite, founding member and singer of Canned Heat. Compiled by DJ Dr. Boogie. "Although it stems from the same artistic process as Volume One in the Dr. Boogie Presents series, this is not Volume Two of a series devoted to Bob Hite. The process WAS different in that here I focused on much more obscure tracks taken from the very small portion of what remains of the collection of 78rpms owned by the late and legendary Bob Hite. The collection of this boogie music ogre reached 20,000 78rpms in 1968. However, toward the end of his life, Hite was forced to sell chunks of his treasure to pay off debts, and the leftovers were literally pillaged after his death. Canned Heat's drummer Fito de la Para managed to salvage a tiny slice of this collection. The first compilation album devoted to Bob Hite's records focused on a handful of blues giants, including six titles from Elmore James' repertoire. Here, since there will be no sequel, I decided to pack as much music as I could on 2 LPs vinyl (first one/Paw 1 has already been released and this is the second, Paw 2). I didn't want to alter the dynamics of these fabulous 78rpms, so I opted for only a very light mastering, keeping the inevitable audio defects, artifacts and surface noise occasionally heard on the tracks that were more damaged. Bob "The Bear" Hite was a crucial part of the West Coast blues revival of the late '60s. Along with fellow musicologist Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson, he helped formed the first incarnation of the legendary Canned Heat as a jug band. Their performances at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and the 1969 Woodstock Festival put them on the map as true bluesmen seeking to revitalize an art form. Hite toured nonstop with Canned Heat and performed as the group's barrel-housing lead singer until his death of a heart attack on April 5, 1981. He helped revitalize the careers of John Lee Hooker, Sunnyland Slim and Albert Collins, and produced the now-legendary Hooker 'N Heat double album in 1971. Hite is most remembered for his endless on-stage boogie jams. Enjoy this burning selection and most of all... don't forget to boogie!" --Dr. Boogie

Artist: DR. BOOGIE
Title: Shim Sham Shimmy
Label: SUB ROSA (BELGIUM)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SR 279CD
This is the third volume in Sub Rosa's collection devoted to rare and lost recordings from the '20s to the '60s, following Dr. Boogie Presents Rarities from the Bob Hite Vaults and Oh, Run Into Me, But Don't Hurt Me! Female Blues Singers -- Rarities 1923-1930. Shim Sham Shimmy has been assembled by Belgian radio personality, musicologist, and Canned Heat devotee, Walter De Paduwa aka Dr. Boogie. Is it really possible to imagine what modern music would sound like if a few pioneering geniuses had not had the idea of electrifying their instruments, especially guitar and harmonica, between 1945 and 1950? Some purists pan this evolution, but, in the '50s, the new sound was heard and embraced at all the studios and night clubs in the United States; it would become a staple on the radio, and in pop culture in general, radically transforming the blues, boogie and country into acts of rebellion. This collection pays tribute to about thirty artists, some of whom later became known, like "Master of the Telecaster" Albert Collins, boogie-woogie and blues pianist Champion Jack Dupree, slide guitar innovator Homesick James, harmonica and blues singer, Sammy Myers, "The Boogie Disease" author Doctor Ross, and one-man band wild-man, Joe Hill Louis. However, the real treat is having an opportunity to hear fabulous unknowns who all, one day, had the chance to be recorded, either in a studio, on the street, or on a back porch, before returning to anonymity shortly after. Almost all of the artists presented here hailed from the Southern states; some of them stayed there their whole life, others emigrated up North, moving up the Mississippi, or toward the West to settle in California. The music included here is part of the foundations of all the modern music that would take the world by storm up to our present time. Other artists include: Charles Sheffield, Ramblin Hi Harris, Bobo Jenkins, Clarence Lockley, B. Brown & McVouts, Wright Holmes, Gunter Lee Carr (aka Cecil Gant), Moses Williams, Haskel Sadler, Larry Dale, Baby Boy Warren, Eddie Snow, Guitar Slim Green, Slim Gaillard, Blue Charlie Morris, Willie Egan, W. Harris, Jake Jackson, Morris Pejoe, Papa George Lightfoot, Pat Hare, Big John & The Dallas Playboys, Lonnie Johnson, and Bob Kelly.

Title: Dr. Boogie Presents 26 Deranged And Smokin' Cool Cats
Label: SUB ROSA (BELGIUM)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SR 286CD
This is the fourth volume in Sub Rosa's collection devoted to rare and lost recordings from the '20s to the '60s, following Dr. Boogie Presents Rarities from the Bob Hite Vaults (SR 271CD/LP), Oh, Run Into Me, But Don't Hurt Me! Female Blues Singers -- Rarities 1923-1930 (SR 268CD/LP), and Shim Sham Shimmy (SR 279CD/LP). This time around, musicologist and radio personality Walter De Paduwa aka Dr. Boogie focuses on the rocketing rise and fast decline of rockabilly (1954-1959), whose name derives from a combination of "rock 'n' roll" and "hillbilly," which may be a reference to the country music that contributed to this genre's development. Dr. Boogie explains, "This form of musical expression can be summed up as a white, typically southern, and rural kind of rock and roll born in Memphis in 1954. The lyrics are often about recurring themes in '50s American pop culture, like cars and teenage love. Young people identified with rockabilly in large numbers, forming gangs that could terrorize a neighborhood by facing other gangs. Leather, Brylcreem, and motorcycles were the signs by which they defined themselves. As a trend, rockabilly lasted only a few years, but it generated a near-unmatched number of recordings from hundreds of studios from as many American cities and small towns. Back then, you could very easily improvise yourself a record producer or label owner: all it took was a little bit of equipment and a small garage, basement, or backstore space. You started by pressing a hundred-copy run for the artist's family and friends. Sometimes, the product reached the ears of bigger label owners who would ensure its wider distribution." Rockabilly almost completely vanished in the late '50s, being replaced by other forms of rock 'n' roll. There was a rockabilly revival in the '70s, spawned by pop culture's nostalgic interest in '50s culture, and rockabilly bands of all stripes and sub-genres keep this important piece of early rock history alive today. The energy, boldness, wildness, and talent of these young pioneers can all be found on this compilation, which rediscovers 26 of these rock adventurers. Artists include: Johnny Jay, Jimmy Edwards, Curly Coldiron, Danny Verne, Eddie Cash, Chuck Dallis, The Cals, Al Urban, Bill Logsdon & The Royal Notes, John Friis & The Valiants, Ronnie Haig, Jimmy Evans, Jimmie Dee, Johnny Knight, Harvey Hunt, Wayne Haas, Bill Moss, Ronnie Allen, Jay Brown & The Jets, Gary Hodge, Charles Senns, Charles Page, T.K.Hulin, Gene Maltais, Bing Day, and The Trashers.

Title: Dr. Boogie Presents Heavy Jelly: Essential Instrumentals
Label: SUB ROSA (BELGIUM)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SR 292CD
This is the fifth volume in Sub Rosa's collection devoted to rare and lost recordings from the '20s to the '60s, following Dr. Boogie Presents Rarities from the Bob Hite Vaults (SR 271CD/LP), Oh, Run Into Me, But Don't Hurt Me! Female Blues Singers -- Rarities 1923-1930 (SR 268CD/LP), Shim Sham Shimmy (SR 279CD/LP), and Dr. Boogie Presents 26 Deranged And Smokin' Cool Cats (SR 286CD/LP). This time around, musicologist and radio personality Walter De Paduwa aka Dr. Boogie has assembled a collection of hot-shot instrumentals culled from the original 45s -- tunes mainly dominated by a sax and organ, and always backed by a strong rhythm section. The first half of the '60s was a perfect test ground for whoever wanted to make a record for a fistful of dollars. The 45 rpm was king, and among the other genres of the day, instrumentals occupied a sizeable chunk of production. The best-known instrumentals came from California in the late '50s, thanks to the surfers who quickly adopted a new guitar sound from Texas. Simultaneously, all over the United States bands started recording lots of diverse and surprising instrumental tracks. They did so for various reasons: lack of a good singer, as filler for a B-side, or for a shot at the charts with a different, jukebox-ready mix of an already-released song. The mark of a good instrumental was often a gimmick, i.e. that little something -- a riff, an intro, a repetitive chord -- that would act as the piece's signature item. The tracks here were shamelessly designed for no other reason than to fill up the dancefloor, to great effect.

Label: SUB ROSA (BELGIUM)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SR 307CD
Subtitled: Fabulous Rhythm'n'Blues Shakers On The Dancefloor! 1952-1968. This is volume seven in Sub Rosa's series of rare and lost recordings from the '20s to the '60s, following Dr. Boogie Presents Rarities from the Bob Hite Vaults (SR 271CD/LP), Oh, Run Into Me, But Don't Hurt Me! Female Blues Singers -- Rarities 1923-1930 (SR 268CD/LP), Shim Sham Shimmy (SR 279CD/LP), Dr. Boogie Presents 26 Deranged And Smokin' Cool Cats (SR 286CD/LP), I'm Going Where The Water Drinks Like Wine (SR 287CD/LP) and Dr. Boogie Presents Heavy Jelly: Essential Instrumentals (SR 292CD/LP) -- assembled by Belgian radio personality, musicologist, and Canned Heat devotee, Walter De Paduwa aka Dr. Boogie. "Wasa Wasa" means "what's up?" and invites you to put on your dancing shoes. A fine opportunity to remind everyone that what was called rhythm and blues in the late '50s and came from "race music" was the marriage of the word "rhythm," which designated a fast tempo, and the word "blues," which brought to mind the unmovable 12-bar rule. Rhythm'n'blues would become the vector that would let black music infiltrate white popular music and pave the way for the emergence of rock'n'roll. All tracks are taken from the original, authentic 45 rpms.
