Title: Halcyon Days
Label: HUX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: HUX 092CD
"Dr Strangely Strange originally formed in Dublin in 1967. After signing with Island Records, they released their debut LP, Kip of the Serenes, in 1969. Eventually the group became a springboard for a new generation of Irish rock, helping to launch the careers of Phil Lynott & Gary Moore. Hux is now proud to announce news of this previously unreleased album by Dr Strangely Strange, dating from their classic period, 1969/70. Halcyon Days contains ten archive tracks (mostly produced by Joe Boyd) which were recently discovered in the Island vaults. As bonus tracks, the CD includes 3 new songs, recorded last year in Kip of the Serenes acoustic style. The album is presented in a limited edition digi-pack, with a 32 page booklet, featuring extensive liner notes & band history, rare photographs and full song lyrics to every track. "

Title: Kip Of The Serenes
Label: HUX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: HUX 104CD
"Hux Records is proud to announce the re-release of this classic slice of psychedelic folk. Based in Dublin, the Strangelys were friends and contemporaries of the Incredible String Band, whose producer Joe Boyd signed them to his Witchseason management and production company in 1969. This first album originally came out in mid 1969 on Island Records. Over the years, Kip has acquired a considerable cult status; in 2007, Record Collector Magazine proclaimed it one of the UK's hundred most collectable progressive rock records. Previous CD reissues of Kip have been of variable quality, but we have now set matters right with this special collectors edition. Using the tape restoration skills of the Audio Archiving Company, we have re-mastered the album directly from the original stereo mixes and added four previously unheard bonus tracks, taken from the original studio sessions. Belying the age of the tapes, the sound quality is sparkling. Music historian Adrian Whittaker, responsible for our well-received archive Strangely's release Halcyon Days, has put together a lavish accompanying booklet including a history of the band, new interviews with the band members, Joe Boyd and writer Iain Sinclair, full lyrics to the songs and many previously unseen photographs." Includes 32-page booklet.

Title: Heavy Petting
Label: REPERTOIRE (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: REP 1045CD
Reissue of the 2nd Dr. Strangely Strange album from 1970, packaged in elaborate die-cut digipak cover (mimicking the original LP packaging, w/ fairly memorable Roger Dean artwork). "This band were one of many Incredible String Band inspired groups during the late '60s who wove together folk music with psychedelia. Their first album Kip of the Serenes is a minor classic and was well known at the time due to tracks from it appearing on low price compilations. Upon the 1970 release of Heavy Petting, the band's sound had progressed. The early songs on the album still have that whimsical, slightly surreal ISB-inspired sound but as the album progresses it introduces Celtic pipes and a driving folk rock edge. Interestingly this mixture of strummed acoustics and electrics with harmonising vocals sounds very similar to the Velvet Underground's final album of the same year Loaded which went on to become a rock classic. With a very young Gary Moore who went onto fame with Thin Lizzy as well as his own blues and rock solo career the guitar work is marvellous with searing folk-rock lead soloing. In 'Jove Is At Home' they find a delicacy that is similar to Synantheseia or Dulcimer with gentle vibes shimmering in the background. Overall an excellent album with some classic moments and one that has been overlooked unfairly." -- Mark Coyle, The Unbroken Circle
