"One of the greatest and most adventurous pianists of the blues scene since the Thirties, when as a young man he began travelling the United States in search of his soul, William Dupree was initially more known for using his hands in another manner. Lured to professional boxing by the mythic Joe Louis whom he had met in Chicago, Dupree with the self-explanatory nickname of 'Champion' Jack Dupree was more known for his KO skills than musical skills throughout the thirties. He later resumed his early passion and began playing his straight, in-your-face blues tunes, often singing about life's hardships, addiction and drug use. After serving in World War II, he became a major source of inspiration to the blues revival scene in the UK in the early Sixties, when this album - originally released in 1958 - began fitting exactly the raunchy blues attitude of the young beatniks of the fast growing British cities."
