A technoid album for the dub and reggae freaks. This is the long-awaited debut album from Berlin-based Lars Fenin, the man who symbiotically fuses techno and dub for Shitkatapult. After founding his own reggae band in Berlin called Tribal Notes, he quickly became familiarized and directly involved with the early burgeoning electronic music from Berlin's expanding club and music scene. His first 12" titled Herr Pitzelberger appeared in 2000 on Shitkatapult, and since then he has been at the core of the label. He followed with releases on Echochord, Meteosound, and Textone. Fenin's productions have little to do with what is generally understood to be dub-techno or techno dub: rather than minimal techno tracks overloaded with effects, Fenin crafts old school, grounded productions that emerge from studio handiwork involving classic overdub techniques created live on a mixing board. The term "dub" thus derives from a much earlier incarnation and understanding of reggae. On Grounded, the musical spectrum is set pretty wide from technoid pieces like the deep "South" to the old school dub piece "Interlude"all the way to pure reggae songs like "No C.I.A." or "Thrill." The strength of the album is located where techno, dub, and reggae are brought closer together successfully.

Breakin'/A Try Mixes showcases all of Fenin's class and quality seen from a remixer's perspective. "Breakin'" is a dancefloor piece with a popcorn melody line upon a grooving funk techno beat. The remix version by Der Dritte Raum is a fat production. "A Try" features Gorbi on vocals and is remixed by Daniel Meteo & Max Loderbauer/Tom Thiel aka Sun Electric. Meteo's house remix is pure deep funk, while Sun Electric produce an arty ragga track with splattered vocals.

This is the second full-length release from Berlin's Lars Fenin for the Shitkatapult label. From his start in the late-'90s up until now, Fenin has crafted a unique dub techno trademark sound. However, Been Through steps out of the dub techno circus to involve much more. Rhythm-wise, you can recognize that the dubstep era influenced the Berlin producer: 4-to-the-floor beats have been replaced by strong broken patterns that evoke a dancefloor feeling but with their subtle breaks and moves, develop into a unique approach to electronic dancehall. Fenin is also accompanied by fantastic guests -- Gorbi, a Berlin-based singer from Ghana, lends his unique voice to four tracks on this record. Far away from being a wanna-be Jamaican reggae toaster, Gorbi showcases a real African singer spirit in his work. If you are looking for the original reggae tip of Been Through, you might prefer Jamaican toaster Scorcha with whom Fenin created "Complain," which is a first-class digital riddim. To make it a classic Fenin album, you can also still taste the dub techno beat on tracks like "Miles and More" and the first single track "Breakin." "Breakin" is a little machine -- it merges the dub techno and dubstep fever with a taste of electronic pop. Abstract fun and deep grooves. To complete the album, there are three ambient tracks: the heavenly "So Weit So Gut," "Years Ago" and the opener track, "Dub Eraldo," which was made together with Eraldo Bernocchi, an Italian avant garde jazz guitarist and electronic producer who has worked with people such as Thomas Fehlmann and Bill Laswell.

"None Of Them" by Lars Fenin is an outstanding track originally from his 2005 album Grounded, and it assembles the best of two music worlds: reggae and techno. The songwriting by Fenin combined with the voice of Gorbi will give you goosebumps. Here now, we have the 12" featuring "None Of Them" in a floor killer remix by Robag Wruhme, featured on Fenin's Mixes & Maxis CD (STRIKE 117CD), and a dub remix version, exclusive to this release, on the flip side.

Some people call it the renaissance of dub techno -- the deep, the twisted and the reverberant are returning to the dancefloor. Lars Fenin, born in Hamburg and living in Berlin, has been known for that kind of sound for more than ten years already, releasing ingenious stuff on Shitkatapult, Hör Zu, Echocord/Colour, Meteosound and his own label called Dock. Mixes & Maxis is a roundhouse kick of his current work: nine magical dub techno tracks, some of which have already been published on 12"s, but are now available on CD for the first time. Besides blueprint tracks like the brilliant "Done" or "Driven," and more current releases like "Romeo Kalimba" (great Echocord split maxi with "Deadbeat") as well as Fenin's dubstep hit "Seems Like," there are quite a few new treasures to be found here. "Adeto," for example, an incredibly deep ambient track, creating a musical ocean of black and dark blue waves. Just like the extremely funky "Division El Norte" and "Sound And Power" featuring renowned vocalist Gorbi, all tracks stand for quality and a certain groove as well as a natural connection between electronic music, techno and dub. The album's magical moment is an old friend in a new suit: "None Of Them," Fenin's evergreen also featuring Gorbi, has been remixed by Robag Wruhme. When he was still a part of Wighnomy Brothers, Robag had played "None Of Them" over and over again and had placed the track at the top of his DJ charts, so of course he was thrilled to remix the track. And what a remix it turned out to be -- a killer on the dancefloor and still a soulful techno track. The album in general is characterized by a certain timelessness, a constancy of music beyond the borders of electronic, dub or techno. It's depth and soul turning sound into music instead of a fleeting moment of hype. It is the renaissance of longevity, of the soul of music, which drives us all.
