Artist: FLOWER TRAVELLIN' BAND
Title: Satori
Label: PHOENIX RECORDS (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: ASH 3002CD
2013 repress. The Flower Travellin' Band's first musical outing, Challenge, was released in 1970 and was essentially a series of covers of Cream, Hendrix, Big Brother and Jefferson Airplane material. However, Satori appeared a year later and forever changed the way the group would be perceived, both in Japan and in the musical world at large. Possessing the vision to select Akira "Joe" Yamanaka as their vocalist, the Flower Travellin' boys elevated themselves above other Japanese bands of the time, whose efforts were largely confined to imitating British and American bands of the era. Satori, which was released in 1971, is a conceptual hard rock/psych album driven by Hideki Ishima's furious guitar licks which erupt and explode over the harmonic heart beat of the drums and bass and Yamanaka's banshee-like vocal style which was turning him into an occidental Iggy Pop or Robert Plant while the band itself was rapidly becoming Japan's answer to Led Zeppelin. Satori is a huge album in every way. From power chords to Eastern-tinged North African six-string freak-outs and crashing tom-toms, the band flexes its collective muscle from start to finish. In short, this is a real rock classic of the type they simply don't make any more. Housed in a limited-edition card wallet.

Title: Make Up
Label: PHOENIX RECORDS (UK)
Format: 2CD
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: ASH 3033CD
When released in 1973, Make Up, with its incredible faux-leather imitation attaché case outer bag, looked every bit the last word in over-the-top packaging and now originals, complete and in good condition, fetch hundreds of dollars in the collectors' market. However, despite the lavish packaging, Make Up did little to enhance the group's already considerable reputation and the various band members went their separate ways immediately after the album's release. Although the album has been described as "inconsistent," there are some definite stand-out tracks, and generally Make Up reflects the varied influences that the band drew on throughout their sadly short career. This double album consists of both live and studio recordings and features keyboardist Nobuhiko Shinohara. 2CD housed in a replica outer slip-case and deluxe gatefold sleeve, including the original LP insert. Numbered, limited edition.

Title: Made In Japan
Label: PHOENIX RECORDS (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: ASH 3047CD
Following critical acclaim but meager record sales in their native Japan after their superb debut album, Satori (ASH 3002CD/LP), Yuya Utchida and his Flower Travellin' Band decamped to Canada following an invitation to open for local jazz-rock outfit Lighthouse. While there, Lighthouse leader and keyboard player Paul Hoffert offered to produce the band's next studio album, the ironically-titled Made In Japan, originally released in 1972, although it must be said, Hoffert's musical vision didn't always reflect the band's. However, Utchida was particularly happy with the results; although again, critical acclaim didn't translate into significant record sales and the band duly parted company following their half-live/half-studio release, Make Up (ASH 3033CD). Numbered, limited edition collector's edition, housed in a gatefold sleeve with slip case and original LP artwork. Digitally remastered.

Title: Anywhere
Label: PHOENIX RECORDS (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: ASH 3054CD
First album from the legendary Japanese rockers fronted by Yuya Uchida. Although an album consisting mainly of cover versions, 1970's Anywhere still exhibited many of the musical traits that were to come to the fore on the band's next release, the classic Satori, an album of original material delivered with panache by the increasingly confident Uchida. An album made memorable by its risqué cover as well as its ground-breaking approach to Western rock music. Digitally remastered. Includes the original Japanese insert.

Title: Satori
Label: WARNER BROS (JAPAN)
Format: CD
Price: $22.00
Catalog #: WPC6 8425
Restock of this 1998 remastered version of the 2nd album by this early 70s Japanese underground rock legend. Flower Travellin' Band were a Japanese psych/hard rock quartet from the 70s. Their pants flared most excellently, vocalist "Joe" had a shreik to match his Atlantic label counterpart across the ocean, and there was a certain Zep-edge to their sound that nobody wants to admit to today. Satori was their 2nd album from 1971, a heavy-rock concept album in the grand tradition, and is generally acknowledged as their masterpiece. This version features somewhat more extensive graphic detail, with a fold out booklet.
